    It’s wild to me that my vet did not warn us about this BEFORE our visit. Our cats loved each other dearly before the visit. Now (almost two weeks later), they can’t be in the same room without AGGRESSIVE fighting. We’re feeling really disheartened here.

      I had this happen after I brought my sweet cat home from the vet. She was given a terminal cancer diagnosis, so it was just insult added to injury. Her best friend of 15 years was growling and hissing at her for a long while. It broke my heart, but it did pass. I hope your situation has improved.

      Hi everyone. Bad news and good news. The bad news is that it took us about two months to to bring our cats back to their love for each other. Good news, we finally got them back.
      Patience was key. I'll try to be brief. While keeping them separate for the entire two months, we did four things that seemed to help:
      1. We switched them between captivity three times throughout the day. We wanted them to become with each other's smells in different parts of our house.
      2. We had them meet through a cracked door every time we switched them. When they seemed to progress, we would open the door a bit more each time, eventually opening the door all the way and doing supervised visits (i.e., my partner and I would each hold a cat and have them meet each other relatively close).
      3. Along with #2, we fed them on opposite sides of the door so they could smell each other and eat. Eventually, we opened the door enough to have them eat right across from each other with their heads practically butting up against each other.
      4. (As per our vet's recommendation and guided dosage) We gave the aggressor cat prozak. After about two weeks of this, the aggressor started calming down, which allowed the other cat to feel less stressed out around her. After the two cats finally rekindled their relationship for about a week or two, we weeded the aggressor cat off of the prozak (e.g., a pill every other day vs. every day) until taking her off it completely.
      Again, I can't stress how important patience is. There were several times when we got antsy and allowed them to meet too early, which would lead to a bad fight and sort of felt like restarting the clock (not entirely). If your cats fight during this process, it's not the end of the world. It happens. Be kind to yourself during this process and take solace in knowing you're not the only ones navigating this challenge. Also, remember, things WILL get better. Wishing you all the best of luck!

      Thank you. My 2 cats, brother and sister, are nearing 2yrs old. I tried placing a harness on the brother and he started behaving goofy. That was enough to trigger the sister and now I and the vet thinks she thinks he’s someone else. I too am fearful this will never get better and it was very sudden, violent, and traumatic. I came home today to pee and poo and stains all over the house. Horrible situation and this video is the first solace I’ve found. Even the vet was confused as to why this got so serious.

    This is a really important thing to know about and pretty common thing, probably. I had it with my late cats, who were litter mates and already adult girls then. We usually had a "comfort blankie" with the cats to a vet, so that probably transferred the scent. That one time, however, the kitty who went had been ill for some time (a day or two, which for a cat is a long time - she didn't show her symptoms that easily) and was taken in for a thorough examination and then had a long course of antibiotics. She was sedated at the vet's and came back a bit drowsy, so of course we were cautious when letting the other cats come near her. All went fine with the older cat (he had plenty of experience, I suppose) but her sister was shocked. She had been trying to find her sister whole day when she'd been taken to the vet's and now didn't seem to recognise her. Well, that was to be expected, so we just separated the cats and thought nothing of it. Then, the next day the scene repeated - the sister was hissing and spitting at the ill "stranger" she apparently thought had replaced her previously healthy and fun sibling. And the cat who was feeling poorly took offense, not understanding why her sister was behaving this way. We tried separating the cats but with limited space it was difficult (and we didn't realise it was going to be that much of a problem, frankly). The hissing and skulking lasted for the duration of the antibiotic and when it had left the cat's system (I suppose her scent and behaviour was back to normal) the sister came one day happily greeting her, as if seeing her the first time for a long, long time. And was met with a paw full of claws to the face ( of course, since she had been hissing and spitting for a better part of two weeks at her). So, now we had two cats who had been mortally offended and unable to forgive one another (pick any soap opera about sisters carrying a grudge and they pale in comparison with two cats who have one). Eventually they did come into terms enough that there wouldn't be actual fur flying, but even ten years after that I'd sometimes wake up to the all too common feeling of two cats deciding to settle the score in my bed 3am, under my comforter, on my bare legs.

He was gone for 4 days, and it seemed like there was an initial moment of confusion that escalated, a lot like the description here. Going on day3 now and not getting much sleep. This is why I always try to schedule general checkups for both cats at the same time. I had a couple of instances where I only took one, and the other would hiss when at them when they came home. It's easier to have them both be traumatized together.

    You've done it again! This is the second time the video you posted applied to my cats that week. Both our cats went to the vets 6 weeks ago one for a booster and the other who's only 12 weeks for 1st jabs both where fine when we got home. Then last week rogue (kitten) went for her 2nd jab and Draco was hissing at her when we got home when usually you cannot part them. She was actually oblivious to him and just bulldozed right back to cuddling with him and he's soft so he let her fortunately but it did surprise us. She's due to be spayed in the next few months so I will definitely be following these tips. Thank you!

    I had a cat who went to the vet & went under anesthesia. She was held for 24 hours for recovery & monitoring. When we picked her up, her personality was completely different. She was like a little psychopathic light switch. She would act fine for awhile, & then she would suddenly viciously attack our dog. They had grown up together & never had any issues prior. She viciously attacked him, like latched on with claws & teeth. He luckily didn't retaliate (he was not a small dog he could have easily killed her), he was actually terrified. This happened multiple times to the point that my mom thought it was a hopeless situation & said she was considering having her put to sleep! I was so distraught over that because she was always such a wonderful cat & she was just going through some severe issues & needed help.
    We have no idea what happened or why her vet visit changed her whole personality. We took her back to the vet & the vet didnt know either. The vet was obviously not able to witness the behavior, so she had to take our word for it. She prescribed our cat kitty prozac & it ended up helping. After a few weeks she was back to her sweet normal self. Just for reference this cat had never even hissed at anyone before, not strangers, the vet, or any of our family. She was the sweetest loving, purring cat you could ever find. It is still a mystery to me what happened to her at the vet that triggered her to act in such a violent way for that period of time. We only had the cat & the dog at that time, no other animals.

    PLEASE HELP ME!
    I have two males.. litter mates that are over a year old and have been inseparable best friends since day one. Neither of them have ever been aggressive with me or each other.. anyone that’s been over has expressed how they are the sweetest cats they’ve ever been around. I didn’t know about this issue and I bathed both boys to treat for fleas.
    It would be heartbreaking to see them acting like strangers ..but it is FAR worse than that. Not 10 minutes after the second bath, they were in a brutal fight trying to kill each other. Blood drawn, hair flying everywhere, horrible screams from both of them, and one left with a leg injury.
    I was horrified but managed to get them apart. My only option is to lock one of them in my bathroom. I have been switching them a couple times daily, doing their feedings through the door, and getting their scent on a t-shirt and switching that out.
    So far there has been no sign of progress..it’s still so bad that they hiss and growl through the door. One of them(the initial aggressor) hisses and growls AT ME if his brother makes any noise even from three rooms over.
    Will they ever be able to work this out after such a horrible fight?? I am lost and don’t know how to fix this. Its the most severe case i’ve heard of, and no one even went to the vet. I would love some guidance on this situation 😢

    Hoping to get through it safely and quickly.
    Since we didn't do any prevet scent transfer, I've used a t-shirt of mine that I sent with Wade in our other kitty's(Harleykins) area in hopes of helping. While he's healing I've added a baby gate to keep his activity limited. Harleykins is just set on hissing and growling. Fortunately Mr Wilson is passive and just appears to not understand why his friend isn't been friendly.

    This is such a small but wonderful tip. My senior cat has been going to vets more often as he ages. Every time he would come home, our younger cat would immediately bristle up and yowl and stalk him. We would constantly say “Floyd Floyd that’s Henry. That’s your brother. Don’t you see him.” I didn’t realize he couldn’t see him because his scent was no longer Henry. We would feel so bad cause Floyd would try to attack him and Henry who is not a fighter would just let him attack and run away. Once Henry settled onto his cat bed and his scent would return from now I’m learning, Floyd would finally see his brother. This tip is gonna become the standard for vet visits from now on! Thank you Jackson

    Wow, I wish I had known this literally 10 years ago. One of my cats came home from the vet to find her littermate brother hissing at her. Two cats that were totally loving with each other before. Thankfully my girl just sat there and did not react aggressively at all. Eventually my boy either decided that yes, this was his sister, or a totally new cat, so “ok, we’re cool”. But it took over a week. I had no idea until now that there was an actual term for this. They’re both gone to the rainbow bridge now, but I have another set of kittens now and I’ll keep this in mind if they ever go to the vet separately. Thanks, Jackson!

    I have this problem with my 10 year old littermates, it took a full week before the tension released and they could walk past each other again.
    Last time I had a day-long procedure to avoid it (went straight to the bathroom with the cat that had been away and put him there, put the carrier in the living room and the blanket from the carrier on the bed where the other cat sleeps. Then hung out with the cat that had been away in the bathroom the entire evening and gave him a bath before letting him out) and there still was some tension for a day or so.
    Whenever I can I bring both cats to the vet, but I sure will try this next time!

    If it's just a smell thing they get over it after about an hour (I need to start using the method in this video to see if it helps), but it was really bad when my one cat had surgery and needed a cone. It took my other cat about three days to get used to the cone cat. Then I got an inflatable donut thing because he was having a hard time with a cone, and my other cat freaked out all over again and took about two days to get used to the new donut cat.

    Does anyone - or even Jackson - have any tips on moving house? Especially with a rescue cat. I only adopted him last May, and now have to move in 6 to 8 weeks time. He has come so far, and settled really well, bur now I'm going to turn his world upside-down.

    • @Cypresssina
      @Cypresssina 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My cats have moved 3 times. Both were rescued. One is a TNR ( I got him at 3 years old) and the other had been abused (he was 5 years old when he came to live with us). They usually adjust quickly. I get a larger cat carrier that will fit them both comfortably, as they seem better when they can comfort each other. If there is a lot of stuff going on, I put them in the bathroom or a room that's quiet. I can't leave them in the carrier for too long because that was part of the abuse that was brought against the one cat.
      He was left in a carrier for at least a week up to a month and was covered in blood and waste when the shelter got him. I don't want him reliving that trauma.
      They have their blankets and towels with them. I check on them when there isn't too much excitement and let them out to explore when they're ready. I talk to them lots (like usual) and I don't chase after them while they're getting settled. I let them come to me and just try to act calm and normal. They do seem to enjoy exploring new territory in some way. It works for the two I have, but I don't know if any of that helps.
      What were calming things that you to settle your cat in when he first came to live with you? Maybe have some of those ready?

    • @OpheliaNorthland
      @OpheliaNorthland 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just had to do it with my 2 rescues. I only had the one about 3 months before I had to move.
      My advice- get them zooted before moving. I used Feliway on their blankets when I out them in their carriers. This kept them quiet and pretty calm. The kitten was a little resistant to it, and cried occasionally, but otherwise they were too high to really know what was going on. I then kept them in their carriers until *most* of the moving was done. Once my bedroom was more or less setup, I opened their carriers and closed the door for a while, or until the living room was basically done. Just because my bed carries all of our scents, so it's more familiar to them.
      I also had to carry my cats to the litter box the first day or so, and they did hide a lot, for a couple days but they did settle.

    • @TraceyMush
      @TraceyMush 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As soon as you get to new place, provide them with some items that have the scent of home. lf your new place is not set up yet, keep them in an area where they're away from commotion (bathroom or large closet or an unused room) and give them your unwashed bedding from home to lay on. Have their litter box, with used litter preferably (but it doesn't have to have stools or clumps in it), and their food dishes in their area. After the moving of things is finished, l would open the door to where they are a bit so they can choose to come out if they want. Oh, you have a single cat. l would make sure to visit him regularly through the moving day so he knows you're there. Best of luck with the move :~))
      l've moved with a number of cats and only one time when a kitty took hard to the change and continued to hide out for a few months.

    I have had that problem ever since my male cat was at the vet. This happened many months ago (more than a year). Before his appointment both cuddled usually. It completly changed. I even tried to reintroduce them by seperating them two months at first. They were in different households. I tried to make them forget the other's scent (but not mine by visiting my boy frequently) and then, as I have said already, introduce them as you would do it with a new cat. Slowly, over time to minimize their stress levels. But they kept being rough to each other. I still do work on it. I bought cat music that I try to play, when they relax or while giving treats to them. Conditioning both of them. Or using pheromones that you can buy for that very purpopse. It got better but they still are far from how they had been for their first year toghether. They can sleep next to each other again (with a distance of about 50cm) and also accept treats next to eats other. They also play with each other again sometimes. Not as they did in the past but we are progressing forwardly. Honestly, I was very angry at the vet and I promised to myself that I would not go back there again. I haven't since then. But reading the comments here, it doesn't seem to be an uncommon issue. Relieving yet depressing to know that. I did a similar trick with a shirt, Jackson but usually with my scent on it because I thought that would provide a feeling of being at home and safe to both of them.

    I'm just experiencing this now with my two roughly 7-year-old littermates. They have always gotten along well--- a little more independent as adults than when they were kittens always snuggling together, but they clearly were still friends. I had to take Vincent to the emergency clinic for a urinary obstruction--- he ended up being gone for several days, and when he came back, Toulouse started hissing at him, and then after a while he started hissing and growling back. It seemed to escalate much as this video described. Very sad, baffling and stressful when they've been such good friends for their whole lives. He had a similar surgery a few years ago and they didn't have problems, or when she had to go to the emergency for several days when they were still kittens. I'm not sleeping much. Keeping them separated in my 1br apartment is hard, and I feel like my home has become a combat zone.
