      Oh wow, I never really made that connection, you're totally right. I picked up guitar back in 1990 and both Vernon and Marty were part of the reason I did. I think Marty gets more heat for the technique as Vernon was known to be super wild and kinda sloppy on his leads seemingly on purpose, while Marty is fluid and controlled.

    Marty proves here that even if you have all the technique in the world without being able to play melodically over chord changes all that technique will be pretty much inconsequential, i find this tutorial way, way more meaningful and useful than most of the other shredder vids, fantastic stuff :)

    • @rustyshackleford4743
      @rustyshackleford4743 10 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      yeah you're right. There are enough videos on technique out there, so this was really useful. However, it seems best to have most of your techniques down and then learn theory type stuff, because you'll be able to play a lot more examples of each theory you learn. If you start learning theory on day one, you'll only be able to apply one note at a time.

      @@rustyshackleford4743 yeah, but in my opinion, it doesn't matter how fast or clean you can play or how many notes you can play in one bar if you don't really know what is going on with them. I think both things are important, but learning music theory is learning how music works and discovering exactly what you want to play. Then, the technique will help, but it should not be the first thing when learning imo

    This video is the reason Kirk Hammett decided to pick up the wah and James Hetfield became a table.

    • @donharrold1375
      @donharrold1375 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Kirk doesn’t really think the same way Marti does. Marti is very methodical and thinks and carefully plans his way through his solos. Kirk is a lot more basic - a note jammer basically. However, I’d never say Kirk isn’t capable of playing more or less the same things Marti does. I just don’t see him doing it.

    • @donharrold1375
      @donharrold1375 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Tushar Sharma Solos are really about creativity and being able to translate what you hear into reality. I’m not trying to knock Kirk when I say this, but I’m not a massive fan of his playing, particularly the over use of the wah which gets a bit tiring after a while. Marty’s solos are works of art by comparison.

    • @BonuxCouleur
      @BonuxCouleur 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@donharrold1375 you clearly have not watched that video where James Hetfield is trying desperately to teach Hammett how to get one little riff right and gets frustrated because it is just not working. There is absolutely no way Hammett would be able to play like Friedman. To me it is not a Metallica vs Megadeth thing it is just that Hammett is more of a guitarist than he is a musician and he is not an original guitarist with that I would say. Mustaine and Friedman regularly trust the top 10 of "all time heavy metal" guitarists, interestingly Hetfield is far behind in the top 50 usually but still way ahead of Hammett who simply does not seem to be regarded as either great guitarist or musician. Hammett's solos for me are cringe worthy, they have a lot of cosmetics in them and musically... they just never sound right to me, they never surprise me. With Friedman the solo takes directions I don't expect but it is still intensely melodic so it never feel awkward. Friedman has developed his own style. Hammett may have developed his own tone but he does not have a style of his own. That's what separates a descent guitarist from a great musician. And technically speaking, there is no contest either. Could Hammett play one of Friedman's solo? Yes, after weeks of practice certainly without the nuances. Could he come up with solos as original, heavy and melodic? Absolutely no way and there is a trail of uninspired and uninspiring Metallica albums to prove it. I rarely enjoy one of James Hetfield riffs these days because it is deja vu most of the time, but the rare time I do, the solos just ruin it all plain and simple. It is not just the wah which is only one of the cosmetics, it is just that KH solos are not tight, they are not melodic, they don't really know where they are going, and they always feel like they are not part of the actual song. The timing is off at times and the solos always end the same way. They are an annoying disruption. In fact I suspect KH is at his best when playing something less metal and more groovy. When he plays slow Hammett sounds better because when he plays slow he has to be more careful of his basic technics like bending. Load was probably the style of slow groovy soloing that fit him the most but still when you see Hetfield or even Trujillo give Hammett a guitar lesson he just cannot replicate... ok he is better than the average guitarist maybe but next to a pro guitarist like Friedman, I just think there is no comparison possible. I don't know how many lessons KH took with the Satch but it does not seem to have stuck with him. Friedman still surprises me and he ventures in progression styles that are not very common. In Rust In Peace, you could hear arabic progressions or whatever it is called and it fit the melody and song so well. The very best solos of KH were in the first Garage Days and for a good reason: he has not wrote them.

    • @donharrold1375
      @donharrold1375 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      BonuxCouleur I'm wondering if you play? The Hammett - Hetfield exchange isn't that unusual when people are learning new material? All songs need to be learned and rehearsed. No matter how capable a guitarist is, it takes time to get things right. Rhythm parts can take a lot more effort particularly if they are syncopated and involve a lot of idiosyncratic elements. Most competent guitarists who were prepared to practise hard, including Kirk, could make a fair representation of one of Marti’s solos. That's not really the point though. Marti’s real talent is coming up with great solos in the first place.

    • @BonuxCouleur
      @BonuxCouleur 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@donharrold1375 Yeah it was not an exchange, it was Hetfield getting annoyed at Hammett's inability to reproduce a riff when even Trujillo got it spot on just by ear. Metallica is THE band with the longest periods of inaction between albums and KH is still talking about "one day I will make a solo album and it will have nothing to do with heavy metal". Don't hold your breathe on that one, I don't think KH has the right motivations for that. He has been in Metallica's full resting mode for too long. If you have to wait 8 years between album, you expect a masterpiece, not a reuse of all the bits and pieces they have rejected from the previous albums. That's the problem with KH, Hetfield has been the freight train carrying all the load and to a point where he ran out of ideas, but the other guys never really put their stride. Friedman hit the mark spot on in his very first album with Megadeth where his arabic scale et al were put to good use. Mustaine has been better at picking band members than Hetfield and Ullrich. It is not that KH is a bad guitarist, he is not but he was far from the greatest and he never seem to come up with fresh material. So I am taking he either does not have the work ethic or he has not been into heavy metal for a long time and is just happy to surf on the financial success that is Metallica. I think if he had some new interesting materials, we would have heard it by now, so I don't buy there will ever be a solo album from KH for that matter.

      Marty has never,ever been underrated.he is renowned to be incredible melodic,unique and out of the box thinking by anyone who plays guitar
      and has appreciation for brilliance and can understand what he is actually talking about.he is a very highly rated guitar player,NEVER UNDERRATED.
      on the same token,marty has an issue/misconception were he says dont learn modes . dont believe him,he knows modes but MAYBE he doesn't know the names of them.(i find it highly unlikely though)for example,and its funny as hell,
      he plays a phyrgian scale then says he invented it which is ridiculous as its a 2000 year old scale pattern and he just doesn't know the name of it.
      definitely learn modes then you will know what actually fits with other notes,scales chord patterns etc. and you'll allow yourself more freedom to move from different sounds,scales progressions etc.

    I'm a firm believer that CONTROL is really an illusion (deep down). You can try to control things (or say you're going to control things) but nobody knows what's going to happen from one day to the next (maybe even 1 hour or 1 minute to the next). Choosing notes that go with the chords is a great tip. I would say it gives you "direction," not control. But this guy is a virtuoso and I've only been playing for 7 months. What the fuck do I know?

    He offers one hell of a lot of information in this hour lesson. He's giving me enough in this one hour to keep me busy for months if not years. Everyone's goal is different. I want to be able to get up there during open mic and play something that really sounds amazing on electric guitar. I love distortion, but I haven't started with the chords yet. Just knowing the five Pentatonic and seven Diatonic shapes, I could spend days (or weeks or months) just varying those. I guess I've been avoiding chords. I've got to put the pedal to the metal - - no pun intended.

      I was talking to an instructor ar Guitar Center. He was telling me to keep my thumb behind the neck between the 3rd and 4th fingers. It feels So unnatural to me.
      I kind of associate playing guitar with martial arts. Bruce Lee respected tradition but he was not a slave to it. He developed his own style. He didn't necessarily follow any models or formulas. I'm not sure about Marty but a lot of these guys have really long fingers. Hendricks, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Pete Townshend. Those fretboards look like toys with guys who have big hands. Still, look at Prince. I'm not his biggest fan but he was not a tall man so his hands couldn't have been that big. But he could play.

    Legend. I always compare Friedman to Chopin in the sense that he writes the craziest unconventional melodies and does so intentionally to avoiding being predictable. Chopin’s music is exactly the same way as he will use the wildest passing tones, appogituras or other non harmonic chromaticism and somehow it always sounds smooth af. Just like Friedman.
