As weird as it sounds, that accident probably saved my life as it brought that relationship to an end.*

This was my husband and me 15 years ago. Frustrating and terrifying because it seems like one person seems to “want” it more or helplessly watch one person bring the other one down. It’s easy to vilify one because surely the other would be sober and healthy if not for the other. If only it were that simple. I have no idea why, but my husband and I beat the odds and are 1.) still married lol and 2.) haven’t used drugs or alcohol since 10/2010.
For whatever it’s worth, I was the Brett, and the more people told me to leave my husband, the sicker and more isolated we became.

It's the truth. My hubby was put away for 2.5 years for selling the stuff. When he came home he was done w the lifestyle and wasn't going to put up w it in any form. He stuck it out for a yr as I continued using and lying about it (like he ever didn't know). While he was away, I had lost my baby sister to an overdose in my own house and after already losing both my parents, I lost it. She died from my stash and I found her. Absolute nightmare. After about a year, he said enough was enough. He gave me the opportunity to make a choice and helped get me to an Ayahuasca ceremony, and bless his heart, it absolutely transformed my life and freed me from my past traumas. No rehabs, no programs, not even maintenance drugs... simply the most challenging and productive wknd of my life! Sending so much love to all those still in the struggle! There's so much more to live for. 🤍

This one made me cry. I’m not one to comment on TH-cam videos, but this one really got me. Bret- go back to your family. They love you. Your son needs you and you need him. Kayla-Take an honest look in the mirror. You’re a smart woman. Instead of living in the fantasy you’ve created in your mind, be real with yourself. Be real with Bret. He deserves that. You deserve that. My partner and I have been in recovery for 20 years now. You CAN get clean and stable- but you have to want it. It sounds like Bret truly wants it. Don’t be the thing that holds him back- you both have endless potential to THRIVE! Just jump and do it. Get into treatment. We DO recover.
Damn… this one really got to me. I want to grab Kayla and take her somewhere safe, so Bret won’t feel obligated to protect her and he can keep moving forward.
There is SO MUCH TO LIVE FOR! I promise- anyone out there who is struggling- there are resources available for you when you’re ready. There are people who give a shit. I’m here, if you need to talk.
Thank you, SWU, for these beautiful glimpses into peoples lives. What you’re doing is incredible and I’m sure it requires a ton of strength and heart. What you’re doing is so important, in so many ways. You’re needed, and appreciated.

She seems to look back very fondly on her using days which isn't good in recovery. I hope they can get better and that she can finally (unfortunately) reach her rock bottom so she'll be ready to take recovery seriously. It was sad to hear her say too "as crazy as brett sounds, he is actually one of my better boyfriends", he doesn't sound crazy? He sounds like he has it really together given the circumstances. When I see addicts it’s upsetting to me, I’m not judging..I feel sorry for them but recently I ended a relationship that was abusive and for 2.5 years he bully’s me and people don’t understand that I can call the police but if he denies he slashes my tires they can’t do anything. When I have proof I got a restraining order. When I get stressed a few people have accused me of being an addict. I passed SEVEN drug tests..if one more person that claims to be my family/friend and still doesn’t believe me then I don’t want those people in my life. I’m 44 and I do not look my age. People ask me if my son is my brother. People on drugs usually look like they are on drugs. People stressed from being bullied, alienated from their child, stolen from, strangled, thrown around like a rag doll, held against my will and yea sometimes I go back anyway because my son lives there, he got a partial scholarship to a college close by his fathers house. His father pays the rest. Used my name to run a business and didn’t pay the taxes and the constant fighting and lawyers it’s stressful. It hurts my feelings because I feel like nobody wants to acknowledge that I’m stuck with this bully stalker asshole that nobody can control so they pretend it’s not happening and I must be on drugs. I don’t even like drugs. I’m old. I take Xanax a prescription I get from my doctor who rarely prescribes Xanax. I have extreme anxiety. I have since I was a child, when my life is calm, and I have my sleep and diet right I don’t need it. I was off anti depressants and Xanax for years. I think learning to live sober would be hard after being an addict..I have sympathy..I understand, but nobody seems to understand my situation. People think if my face isn’t beat and I have money then everything is fine. I’ll go poor buying tired, I put a camera and it disappeared..some shadowing figure..one of his stupid friends I’m sure. It’s stressful for a mother to have know that she has to leave her life and son and go hide just for peace. All by myself. A few years ago I looked so healthy and stress free but I wasn’t..I had been hiding it, I felt like I was drowning. Stress takes a toll but it is a completely different look. I hope these interviews reach a lot of people to give them understanding of addiction, abuse and mental illness. We need more mental health clinics available.

The dynamic of this pair is stereotypical and kinda funny. She’s ultra chatty and he can be when he can get a word in edgewise. I was in Hazelden rehab for three months and they strictly forbid us from even talking to the opposite sex. But there was one group I was in where I was the only male amongst ten or so women. At the start of every group (not just this mixed group I was in) we’d go around the room from patient to patient and had to tell the group how we were feeling. In a group of thirty men, this took maybe three minutes and we’d actually pass around a sheet as it came our turn that contained a bunch of “feeling” words. Angry, confused, melancholy, etc. We’d read off a word and pass it on. In the mixed group, I remember one day looking at my watch realizing we were fifteen minutes in and only three women had finished saying how they were feeling. 😂

Mark I feel like your interviews with couples can tend to be a bit awkward, as one will typically dominate the conversation and the other barely says a word. This interview on the other hand had an excellent flow, pace, it seemed Bret and Kayla were giving each other the floor when appropriate!

I’ve noticed this also. I’m curious if it’s a bit of a reflection of the dynamic the couple has in their regular lives outside of the interview. They have respect for each other ❤️

I think that that is a consequence from this style of interviewing. Mark has chosen to take a step back and let the interview subjects take the lead. The dynamic between the couple is part of their story.

This is super codependent and sad. Bret PLEASE get out of this situation. PLEASE get better for YOU!!!! She does not love you!!!! You were sick and left to get yourself better and she couldn’t stay faithful to you while you were getting better or be there for you??? She will have another man supporting her habits by tomorrow morning!!!!

Dynamics are so nuanced, problematic and complex in drug relationships. It's always in the back of one another's minds, if you would even know one another without the drugs. The physical and emotional need for drugs overshadows and slowly tarnishes the most real and beautiful of love stories. I genuinely wish them both all the best. I've been in their exact situations... and it's so incredibly torturous, cyclic and hard. There IS a way out.. and you are best making that 'way out' recovery.. or it will 100% be institutions, prison or death 💔💔

Everybody has their own journey to go on in life and especially in recovery.
If people are not 1010% on the same page in their recovery.....it just, well, doesn't work.
Someone once told me that every person in our life has a season. Maybe it's many seasons, most will come and at some point...go.
I have my own experience with addiction and recovery. I have had many people come and almost always go....in my lifetime.
I see a disconnect between these two that definitely jumps through their individual perceptions and through the camera in a very short amount of time.
I hope these two find a way to live the rest of their lives happy and healthy. Whatever that looks like for each of them.
As always, these videos are hauntingly beautiful in their cautionary tales. Soft White Underbelly has some of the best content on this platform!
Much light and love to each life you touch by allowing them to tell their stories through your lense.
    ❤❤ from Alaska-- Danielle
