This is the best film version of the play I know. And it is one of the ten best versions of Shakespeare there is. It is disgracefully neglected and ignored. Anyone who really likes films and literature should praise it at each opportunity they have.
Anastasiya Vertinskaya is an actress of ravishingly beautiful expression. She gives the most fragile and magical performance of Shakespeare's iconic heroine that I have ever seen. Maestro Dmitri Shostakovich composes.
All the music of the film is by Dmitri Shostakovich and you'll easily find the records here or in a good classical music store. The translation, on the other hand, is by Boris Pasternak. The texts of the songs are in the original and what you listen, or read, are Pasternak's translations, Kozintzev has also a very good version of King Lear. You can find both, Hamlet and Lear, in the Lenfilm Video channel of TH-cam, with passable English subtitles.

Susan Wagner I only know that the whole soundtrack for this film was composed by Shostakovich. Maybe it's something he has composed for the film?
Saw this film TWICE and it is, for me, the best version of Shakespeare's play (even superior to Laurence Olivier's)
The whole movie is amazing..
Anastasiya Vertinskaya is divinely beautiful!
Haunting and amazing performance
Лучшая постановка, лучшие актёры
Grigori Kozintsev's Hamlet ...
Otherwordly and unsurpassable!
Δὲν μπορῶ νὰ διανοηθῶ καλλίτερη Ὀφηλία. Ὅλη ἡ ταινία ἄλλωστε εἶναι ἀριστούργημα ἀσύγκριτο.

Can anyone ever find out the music that she dances too, and also the actual song she sings?
