  • Hi, 5 of us ride from Auckland to the Coromandel. We get to our campsite (Fletchers Bay) but find a lack of shade, too far from the (stoney) beach and not much privacy.
Instead we head back 7kms to Port Jackson where there is tons of shade, a sandy beach right on our door step and very quiet.
We enjoy our environment with swims and a few refreshments at night. What could be better, just chilling out?

You are not wrong. Just log on to DOC website and book it. $10 a night per person.
Cold showers and long drop dunnies.
Recommend Port Jackson over Fletcher Bay.
Better shelter/ shade, closer to (sandy) beach and long and narrow site so a bit more quieter.👍🏍️🏕️

Great video once again! How long is the gravel section? Will 80/20 tyres cut it, it looks like the tourer had road tyres on?

About 30kms from Coville to Port Jackson (add another 7 kms to Fletcher Bay) is compact gravel. Most bikes could do it. However there are some narrow sections along the cliff tops that require your full attention should another vehicle be coming the other way. Most vehicle drivers were very thoughtful and stopped to let us pass because it was a bit tricky.
You shouldn't have any issues with the 80/20 tyres.👍🏍️

Yes I have on past rides. Road is quite challenging though (heavy gravel) but worth it. Very isolated 👍
