@@coolkid9967 Yes, it’s in German. But the focus is on US and UK artists, so more or less the same new albums as in US or UK publications are being reviewed. If there is notable music with German lyrics, these artists are featured as welll, naturally. But let‘s face it, there is not that much German pop music worth mentioning. Exceptions are artists such as Tocotronic, Blumfeld, Element Of Crime or Tom Liwa.
I’ve told my daughter that in 20 years, IF there is classic rock radio, they will still be playing Beatles, Stones, Sabbath, Rush, Pink Floyd, etc.-NOT rap, hip-hop, autotuned bullshit, or Bon Iver...

"Seven Nation Army" will stand the test of time. Maybe "Take me out" will, too. (Those are the only two tunes off that list that I know, and I happen to like them. So I might be a little biased.)

Come on Pete! I’m 57 and know most of these songs. You can’t criticise stuff you haven’t heard. You actually criticise people for doing just that when you have a go at people not listening to new stuff from old groups.

The album Fever to Tell by the Yeah Yeah Yeah is a really good album. You should check it out if you haven't heard it.
Maps was the stand out track but I preferred their earlier 5 track EP.
I bought that album just on the strength of "Maps" alone, but initially the rest of it I was kinda lukewarm on.Eventually, it started to grow on me, and I'm particularly fond of Brian Chase's drumming,& Karen O has an amazing presence as a front person/lead singer.The next one they did was pretty good too ("Show Your Bones" IIRC),but after that I kinda lost interest in them when they started going into more electronica- type stuff.
Pete won't coz he won't like Karen O's vocal and there won't be any mellotron or Hammond for him 😂

Rolling Stone magazine hasn't been relevant in a long time. Their "top lists" are absolute crap.
Not saying the list is great, but I’m 48 and I know almost all these songs. Turn on your radio once in a while and you might hear something you actually like.
I'm only 24 and I like 60s 70s 80s rock/ metal so I only know 3 songs on the whole list
Me too. And im even 17 years old. Im into this for like a year and the music from these years is just nothing compared to this.

Why don’t you take this list as an opportunity to broaden your horizon a bit? That’s what I usually do with these lists. Doesn’t mean I have to agree with it 100%, but there are definitely some very fine songs in this one.
I have a mate who's an unknown musician. He's done some great stuff. But even the weaker songs he's recorded are better than 95% of this list.
Long rant ahead . . .
I'm 54 (an old fart to most I guess), so imagine all the music I've lived with of different genres since 1963 (including Latin musics and Country because of my late-Father/Family heritage), and grew up with classics from before the 60's.
The "One hit wonders" throughout the 60's and 70's and R&B, Soul and Funk BEFORE the 80's. And then, the AOR FM songs that became HUGE classics! Many also I didn't like, just as anyone who thought songs were overplayed or bands/artists that we may have thought were overrated, but music is subjective to everyone's taste. I began to turn off the radio in 1997, AOR stations became repetitious and "Rock" became stale. "New Wave"/Alternative music I was VERY picky with, but it was much later I appreciated more of it. The bands that people mentioned in the 90's and early 2000's that claimed kept Rock alive sounded weak to me, no edge, no punch, just languid and limp, it all became too "easy listening" for me. I mean, if people like those musics, that's cool, no problem. But for me, I had to find music that was different, challenging and featured the musician, just as much as a focused melodic song. Sometimes, I needed much more than that.
I became a "Progressive Rocker" late in life, 1977 with Kansas "Point of Know Return" started it all for me. It was one of 5 records as gifts that were exclusively mine, but this one stood the test of time. But it wouldn't be until 3-5 years when I really started to explore the genre and became engulfed with as many bands as I could find.
I became a "Metalhead" circa 79-81 (again, a bit late from the Hard/Heavy Rock era) - in both genres, I got be witnessed to ALL the "subgenres" created/invented. Pretty much all subgenres of Prog I followed, Metal, maybe 3 to 4 subgenres I didn't care for. But I went from the classics, extreme, avant-garde and almost everything in-between. These 2 genres of music got me into; Classical, Jazz/Fusion, Soundtrack Scores, early New Age, World/Folk, and went back to discover the roots of Blues (which I'm slowly still learning). I have so much music playing in my head, and I listen to music just about everyday, or reading about it, watching Docs and listening to guys like you Pete, discussing, reacting to and sharing music. And I make music compilations, once on Cassette, then burned CD's, and have made "Themed" Playlists on my Yt channel since joining many years ago.
Modern Top 40 (and most modern Country) makes me sick (sorry folks). Sure, a song or 2 (or 5) will make its way to my ears and sure, I like it. But not many have gravitas. The rest to me is just "stimulus" for those that need "background noise". I always likened it to a machine with a needle that tapped an exposed part of the brain, and the persons stimuli would "twitch" and that was the sum of their enjoyment. Music became almost sacred to me. I can't stand eating some place and that _muzak_ is coming out of their speakers when I eat. It actually makes for an unpleasant experience to try to enjoy my food. I mean, I don't really have to have music on 24/7, I want to hear crowd noise, the birds, the wind, life in realtime. Time to "think" and have the brain uncluttered (I actually don't own a cellphone or ipod - I know, I'm weird).
But "popular" music (imo) of the past 30 years has been getting worse. Does anyone remember one hit wonders and R&B pre-80's, where "most" (not all) had lyrics with meaning and real "soul"? Now, its words that are like sounds effects, or baby chatter, its really weird that people gobble this crap up. And the gimmicky hooks, with annoying samples, and "Whoa oh Woahs, Ohh Oh OH's" and chorus's that are the ENTIRE song sung over and over and over and over (and OVER).

The simplicity of most Top 40 is just a turn off, if there are more cool songs within it, they are lost in a sea of mediocrity, trends and philosophies that are not my own. As you said Pete, most of these songs will be forgotten, or at the VERY least, will be looked upon as "nostalgia", not because of their musical merits and longevity, just; "Ohhhhhh, I remember that song! It brings me back when...".
I was never a Rap/Hip-hop fan, I didn't mind it augmenting other musics, but didn't care for "NU Metal" at all, but years before followed "Funk Metal" bands since it had more to do with its Thrash elements. And "Alternative" musics these days (or for the past 20 years) played on their respective radio stations are _generic_ compared to music programs I've heard from a local College radio station. A lot of music is missed in the mainstream.
I can go to many groups on social media, sites that feature Metal (and Hard/Heavy Rock), Progressive Rock, and Prog Metal, and anyone you talk to (or your face to face friends/family) no matter what part of the world, many will mention or feature obscure underground bands throughout the past years, and you'll be talking about; the musicianship, the lyrics, the mechanics, instruments and members of the bands (even about the recording/engineering and producers), and whatever era. Even though the outside world (and even some Metalheads and Proggers) have never heard of these groups or knew these musics existed, everyone talks about bands and tracks as if they were the most popular rock bands of yesteryears. That is what I'm a part of, for me it never ever is boring. I'm always finding a band I missed from the past and present, and sharing the bands I know with people that are interested and visa-versa.
OUR music has longevity, but without billion selling hits, no radio support, extravagant shows/tv exposure and hyped up press. And no rules, maybe a certain parameter in a "genre", but many still go outside the lines, the box, and many others break rules from time to time. Some work, some don't, some knock our socks off and challenge our heartbeat, brains, and the musicians themselves :).

This is around the 10th video of yours I've watched over the last 3 days, I just found your channel the other night. We're about the same age, and I have been in almost total agreement with a lot of your top lists and rants but this is NOT one of them. You just sound old, grouchy and out of touch here. I don't know all of these songs either but you've dissed a few really good artists while you were at it. I'm constantly open to hearing new acts, and am always chiding my old friends for listening to the same old classic rock albums year after year, never taking a chance to find anything new. A few years ago I discovered NPRs show All Songs Considered and their video series Tiny Desk Concert. Both have opened my ears to a slew of new artists I have come to like and respect. Not all of it is my cup of tea, but plenty of times I'm surprised I like something. It's one thing to say you aren't familiar with some of these songs but WITHOUT EVEN HEARING THEM you're taking swipes at them. Really? Not cool! You just complained in another video about the "hardcore" fans that go to concerts but don't give any of their new music a chance (Uriah Heep group from DC or the Carolinas you were talking to). You're doing the same thing! Man up and at least LISTEN to something before bashing it. You don't have to like it, but give something a chance at the very least first. That's my only gripe here; that you've judged an act based on their appearance on a RS list that you've never even heard. Rant over, carry on sir.
Totally agree! Most of the songs on the list aren't too my taste but I can say that having heard them. I cannot believe that he hasn't heard Crazy in Love by Beyonce. One of the most played songs of the 21st century!
I just found his channel too,,and he has introduced me to a TON of good music. But yes, he should have at least listened to them!! I'm sure he wont like the majority of them but he may like some of those!!!

My mom asked me a question and its one I think more people should discuss. She asked who around from this decade, 2000s, will be around in twenty years? People still pay to see bands from 60s, 70s that may have one original member but they are still loved. Today's music is crap and its like people's attention span, short. We get a new artist and critics say it's the second coming of Elvis or the Beatles even breaking their records. However within a year most those artist disappear. I'd love to know your thoughts on this.
There’s plenty of good music released each year. You just have to look for it.

Either you get hip-hop or you don't... The list is ridiculous of course, but I think it says a lot about where money is being made in the music industry these days.

My mom is famous for saying about the Beetles “ you won’t be singing to these in 10 years “ her favourite song became “yesterday” and then moved into heavier stuff as she became a Phil Collins fan. She was dismayed to be reminded that he was the drummer with her once most hated band , !
Sad that most of those songs don't involve anyone even playing an instrument nor are they even the best songs from any of the last 18 years or even the best songs from those artists. Mid 40's here, Dad of 2 teen daughters, I know all of those artists and songs. Raised our girls with a complete music education 50s-00's, plenty of rock.

The problem with this list and frankly anything in popular culture now is the lack of diversity in music styles. Rock and roll and more importantly to me is the lack of Metal on this list. I do believe that Lady Gaga and Adele are good representatives of pop music and belong on the list. As far as rap, Eminem and Outkast belong. With that said, where are songs that represent rock, metal, and country. I am open to all forms of musical expression but find it difficult to give Rolling Stone magazine any validity when they crap on anything other than rap and pop

Good points. Given how HUGE modern country is the last bunch of years, I was shocked to find no songs represented in their Top 25. Lady Gaga and Adele certainly warrant being there, as they've both had huge hits. You can keep the rap stuff! Plenty of great rock & metal tracks by old and newer bands that are nowhere to be found here.
Rolling Stone magazine hates hard rock and metal. They always have. It's just a corporate rag.
The times have changed, Pete. It's hard for many of these modern pop artists to be original. That's why half of what's on the radio is covers. Not to mention how people listen to music is very different. What sells is essentially digital singles and remixes. Most people are not music fans, Pete.
They like whatever's around, whatever is playing in the background, whether it's at the grocery store or on the radio.
Rock music fans know what they like and know where to find it and don't lament that all of its sub-genres have been allocated far away from top-charting music. The first 50 years of rock music will always be the most historical era for artists and bands. That's good enough for me, because there is sooo fucking much I still haven't heard. That's what is awesome about youtube. TH-cam is my record store. Not that there isn't great new music being made. Sure a lot of the living legends have retired, but it doesn't take much to do a little digging and you'll find plenty of great new stuff. I could give two shits if it's ever played on the radio. The radio sucks anyway. I don't need tons of people to pay attention to what I think is great. I like to make recommendations to rock fans, though.

I remember way back in the I think 1998 I had this friend , female of course, who hated everything about classic rock as we know it and especially Rush,,,who thought that Marcy Playground was a great band and I remember telling her that no one would remember that band in 18 months. I was wrong. No one remembered that band in 6 months.

I agree with your viewpoint on Rolling Stone Mag's list of the top 25 songs of the 21st century. 7 Nation Army might have staying power only because of its adaptability for crowd chants at football games. The real issue to me is the source of the poll. Rolling Stone has proven itself clueless when it comes to identifying great Rock music (particularly if it's Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, or Progressive Rock. RS likes Pop Music and trendy stuff they think is cool. Oh, and they love lyrics more than anything. Bottom line (and it's absolutely true) if RS gave something I never heard of a great review, I would steer clear and give it a wide berth. On the other hand, if they really hated something new in hardrock or metal I would get interested in checking it out. Their esthetic is the one that prevails in the RnR HOF and is why there are SO many mistakes. Sorry for my rant, but RS is coasting on Laurels that (if they ever had any) were lost a LONG time ago.

Alot of those songs are already over ten years old. Hey ya is 15 years or more at this point. That kanye song is ten years old and i hear it and it brings back SOOOO many memories.
The only song from this list that will be timeless is Seven Nation Army.

Pretty much all old people who get pissed off when young people say they don’t like bands like Led Zeppelin or Beatles or acts such as David Bowie don’t even give modern music a chance.
Most of these artists are going to be remembered as legendary in a couple of years.
I don’t want to tell you how to run your channel but I think that if you are going to “review” or at least like talk about new music you should listen to it first.

Pete, you make my day! I totally agree. Rolling Stone has always hated Prog. I have a book at home, The 500 Greatest Albums Ever Made, or something like that. It is 10-20 years old and it does not list any albums by Yes or Genesis.

Pete, you really need to check out a few of the bands on this list. You often rant about how we need to listen to the latest offerings by Uriah Heep and Deep Purple, so you should also stay open to newer artists. The Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs are a really good post punk alternative band. The White Stripes are likely a little too lo-fi for your taste, but they are legit artists. Franz Ferdinand is a band that would likely appeal to you quite a bit.
To mostly now dead fans of Frank Sinatra and his generation, Elvis-Beatles--Zeppelin were equally not relevant.

If you give these a listen, I think you'll agree that they stack up against the pop and rock of the past.
I've can't stand RS. They hated progressive rock. I remember their review of Jethro Tull's Minstrel in the Gallery tearing them down I think that is where they called them Jethro Dull.

I feel like you're showing your age a little here bro - sorry! I respect you loads ofc but as someone a little younger, I can tell you a lot of these are pretty well known modern rock songs - I grew up with half of these!
White stripes and Franz Ferdinand ones are good, you'd generally really like the strokes too I think, they've got a really cool retro sound.
I respect your opinion when you say you don't like the songs you do know, but I think you owe it to people to listen to the songs you don't know and make up your mind on them, because a lot of these songs are hugely popular modern hits, and considering your extensive knowledge of older rock bands (which goes miles beyond of what even 99.9% of classic rock enthusiasts.know) I think brushing up a little on the modern music scene might be an interesting experiment. You could even do some videos on a few bands, and it would be interesting to hear your thoughts on some of them! :)
Like... As an example, you could try my chemical romance, very popular band with some great songs, short discography, and their album the black parade has a strong classic rock influence. There's a lot of pixies and queen in that album, I think you'd really dig it.
I am the same way. This list speaks to how music is made today compared to how it use to be. Real musicians playing musical instruments will stand the test of time compared to auto tuned voices and sampled music.

I don't really understand how you can criticize songs you have never listened to. I don't really agree on much of that list but some of thoose songs you have never heard are undoubtedly good songs or atleast classics for their time. It is a fact popular music is not as good as it used to be but i think you can still appreciate and atleast give modern music a shot.
I give plenty of modern music a shot, just not the media pushed dreck that the majority of this list includes. And, I went and listened to all of them...lets talk in 20 years when nobody remembers the bulk of them.

I'm 50 and I agree I don't know 3/4 of this shit but you know Seven Nation Army by the White Stripes. Listen to all their stuff especially early. Jack White plays a mean guitar. Their first album came out in the late 90's so they've been around for 20+ years at this point....
You should give LCD Soundsystem a chance. It's probably not what you expect it to be. They were on Austin City Limits awhile back and almost didn't watch because I had a preconceived notion. I was wrong. I'm also an old fart.

That says more about you. I don't mean to say that you should know them. We all know what we like regardless of whether it's considered a classic. If I'll ask my colleagues if they know Kashmir from Led Zeppelin I'm sure most will have no clue. It's still widely considered a classic though. I personally think most on the list will stand the test of time whether I like the songs or not.
Bit late on this video so unsure if anyone will see it. But if you haven’t listened to any of these, there’s no need to shit on em. Because I guarantee those OutKast, Eminem, Adele songs WILL stand the test of time just like the classics of the old days. Music is better than its ever been, you want the old music ? It’s there! Anywhere you want it. Along with fantastic new music still coming out today. As someone who enjoys ALL music from the 50s til now, I KNOW for a fact that there are some albums released in the last 20 years much better than albums released back then.

I love Pete and the channel, but this video is definitely a bit of a low point, lol. It boils down to an old-school rock/metal dude blindly dismissing huge swaths of contemporary pop, rap, and indie-rock music. Which isn't especially interesting or productive.

Pete, you may have heard Paper Planes by M.I.A in the film Slumdog Millionaire (2008) during the scene on the train. I'm not avidly keen on it but, I think it's a pretty fun, catchy tune. Other than that I mostly agree with you. I mean, I too could put together a far better list of top 30 songs of the 21st Century in less than 5mins.

I'll say it this way, last fall (2019) a couple of guys I know who are 21 and 27 years of age went on a road trip to see King Crimson in concert who they absolutely love. They said they can't stand what plays on top 40 radio! Lets see if the current stuff is still known or sells 30 years from now like Pink Floyds DARK SIDE OF THE MOON which still sells about 9 to 12 thousand copies per week 47 years after its release.

This is a kind of funny get off my lawn kind of criticism. In the 50's you had the parents saying rock and roll was just noise and would never last. It doesn't hold up well as a prediction. I'm your age, so there are not a lot of songs on this list that I care for much. (Franz Ferdinand is the one exception and it would not surprise me if you liked at least their first album). Lady Gaga leaves me cold, but then I have only given it a couple of tries and been bored before getting through a song. But that is how tastes go.
But that said, most of this list are songs that are more likely than anything I listen to from the last two decades to remain popular. When I was in college it was possible to think (or hope) that rap was a flash in the pan that would soon disappear. 35 years later it is silly to still be thinking that. Rappers like Jay Z, Kanye, Eminem, and Missy Elliot are as likely as anything to still be listened to in 20 years. Outkast was as clever band (really a duo) and it would be nice, and unsurprising, if they are still listened to.
Beyonce and Adele are already so well established it would be surprising if their music has disappeared in that time.
Kendrick Lamar, one of my son's favorites, makes serious music. I say that despite the fact that I have not gotten to like it. I don't know what the staying power will be of a hipster band like LCD soundsystem. I have not cared for what I have heard from by the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs, but I suspect that is because their influences are bands that based on your commentary you like more than I do. So it would not surprise me if you liked them more than I do.
When Rolling Stone does a list of great rock albums (or equivalently when the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame admits members) and they include albums that are not rock, and exclude progressive and heavy metal albums, then I am with you. A Rock list should include rock and not exclude major subgenres. But this seems to be more a complaint that Rolling Stone thinks that a greatest album list should not be limited to rock, and should not be geared to people over 40.
The outrageously successful 'Crazy In Love' is primarily a sample of 'Are You My Woman' by the Chi-lites. Another massive hit, 'Lola's Theme' by The Shapeshifters samples 'What About My Love' by Johnnie Taylor and so it goes on and on. No originality whatsoever. Employees at Rolling Stone need to do their homework before they lecture their readers with an empty font of knowledge and take time to LISTEN to some Rock and Metal that they seem to have overlooked for decades. You never know, they might actually enjoy it!

The latest Rolling Stone Top 500 Albums list from 2012 actually includes rock and metal albums, e.g. Master of Puppets. Heavy Metal is just not their focus, and that's good. You have your hard rock and metal magazines for that. Having said that, I agree that my list of top songs of this century would probably look different too. Although I have to say that at least Paper Planes, Hey Ya!, 99 Problems, Last Nite, Get Ur Freak On or Blackstar are pretty good songs.

The reason this list is so absurd is due to the fact that the choices in the last several years of quality music has gone down the drain. The only song here I like is Rolling In The Deep and MAYBE Uptown Funk.

One thing I'll say for Eminem, he self criticizes in his songs rather than bragging like most other rappers. I liked his early stuff.

Paper Planes is a classic, and it will be listened to 20 years from now. A lot of these artists are good. Remember this is the 21st century, Pete. Some of these songs are classics.
'Arular' is a shockingly great pop album with a lot of experimental electro flourishes and great arrangements. I like it just as much as 'Larks Tounges in Aspic' or 'Relayer' or any of the prog classics.
