Kpop does this as well and it creates literal stalkers that follow their every move and fans get SO genuinely hurt when the K-pop artists (male or female) date or do anything they don’t agree with.

      The comparison is wrong.
Asian idol industry is a whole other category. Always was and always will be.
Also: stalkers are not more likely produced this way. At least there is no proof for that. Every person can get a stalker. It‘s not the persons fault. Sometimes even a little chat with your work colleague is enough

@@and.me_7390 they literally do boyfriend simulated videos for fans lol and tons of fan service. I’m not blaming the idols themselves bc at the end of the day a lot of them are just doing what they’re asked to do by their companies. Back in the day they’d even accept extravagant gifts from fansites, who then feel like they have a right towards knowing every single detail about these idols. So yes, a lot of what the K-pop industry does breeds stalkers and extreme parasocial relationships between idols and fans. If an idol falls out of line at all with what fans think they deserve from them (time, content, transparency) they send literal Jumbotrons demanding companies fire said idols lol they literally call for their careers to be destroyed. That’s how much control they feel they have over these performers. It’s actually probably worse than what Taylor has done, actually

I don't think it's the artists themselves doing this so much as it is their managing companies (I forget what they're called) because they prioritize profits over their own employees.

since around 8 years old, i was a huge taylor swift fan. in my early teens, i had a tumblr dedicated to her, where i made friends with other fans. one of my friends was 'befriended' by taylor, and convinced taylor to also follow me (and others) on tumblr. she reblogged a few of my posts. later, at a concert, my friend was invited to meet taylor but a bunch of us werent, and it caused many issues. that friend grew a huge, inflated ego, and considered herself much better than us because she 'won' the affection of taylor. as for me, i grew sour about the fact that i was rejected by that online friend, and seemingly rejected by taylor despite my efforts to be friendly with her. i was only 13 or 14. looking back, it was incredibly unhealthy and a very competitive environment. even though now as an adult, i can look back and realise that this attitude of taylors was very weird and almost grooming, but the way that it affected me at such a young age lives with me to this day.

The tumblr era of taylor was when she HERSELF was a teenager-young adult. Please check me if I'm wrong. She didn't have many friends when she was young which is why she decided to look for some in fans.
She didn't reject you or choose you, that was all literally in your head. She was literally a teenager too. The fact that you brought up "grooming" and threw that word around so lightly, shows how reliable you as a person are.

The things about Taylor Swift inviting a group of fans into her mansion is also a marketing genius because the fans she picked are also very active on social media and build fans sites for her. They aren't just any fans but super fans as well. And it encourages the super Fandom to go crazy for her and promote her like crazy.
She is also not inexperience in her tactics. She always tries to portray herself as relatable but she is beyond relatable even as a child. A lot of her persona is mostly fabricated over the years. Her childhood upbringing also doesn't line up with many stories she tells her fans. Like she said she wasn't popular and was bullied. Well in a old teenage Vogue interview she said she was actually pretty popular and was part of a popular girl group in Junior high.
She was also the most popular girl in her high school because she was already famous and had fans in school as well.
Also her mom was marketing expert who used to work for an advertisement firm. Taylor's mom pretty much wanted Taylor to be famous since she was little and used to manage all her social media pages and websites. Even til today her mom makes decision on who gets to be near Taylor including fans and security guards.

This cannot be said enough. I like Taylor Swift and love her music but her backstory is very fabricated and outright wrong. The story she sells of growing up on a Christmas tree farm, with kitchen table bills paints a different narrative than the wealthy girl from Pennsylvania whose stock broker father at Merrill Lynch bought her a whole record label so his little girl could become famous and break into country music bc it was an easy pigeonhole, a wide audience at the time and she looks-wise she fit the Carrie Underwood look at the time, like all country singers of the mid 2000s.
All respect to her, she carried this past decade and earned all the stripes she has based off sheer talent and hard work. Just pointing out the facts. It's financially beneficial to appeal to everyone if you say you started off just like everyone else but in fact, she started off way ahead. 🤷‍♀️

Everyone knows it's a joke but it's still funny because if you haven't heard, Scooter Braun (her former manager that stole the masters of her first 6 albums, hence the reason why she's rerecording them as Taylor's Version) is being dropped by his other clients one by one. Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, Demi Lovato, Idina Menzel, Carly Rae Jepsen, and more are all dropping him.
Of course this isn't because of any "tayvoodoo" but something must've happened. Braun must have done something really crazy to the point where all these artists had to drop him. It's clear that these well-known celebrities no longer want to be associated with him, but we don't know why. These things don't just happen to anyone.

I think she's really good at monetizing this parasocial relationship as well. Probably the clearest example is the multiple versions of one album that are released on a time limit. As in the vinyl changes color and there's different packaging but it's relatively the same album. Since it's only available for 24 hours theres a sense of urgency so you dont miss out. She drops like 4 of those for every album and then target gets special versions and then she dropped cds with like a special song in one concert venue or something. Enough people will buy it all because of the collector mentality. Do that for multiple albums and millions of fans. I think its not great that she does it for re-released albums too cause she already profited off of the cycle once. At this point she could sell anything and people would buy it. She's already got a multi million dollar tour happening so she doesn't need the extra income but does it anyway

She is actively creating a feeling of closeness with her fans and through creating a lore for her music (and her career as Well!); she cannot be surprised when she’s causing havoc around her. Also by laying down all hwr feelings in her songs, she created the illusion of absolute honesty which gives her the “can’t do wrong” aura through her relatibility (great example is the Joe Alwyn situation - there was a rumor that one of them cheated; Joe got so much hate while Taylor got a pass from many of her fans, because “If she cheated, she probably didn’t feel loved enough”). Thank you for making this. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about Taylor Swift’s curated public image. She gives what seems like a lot of personal information and, as you said, encourages fans to believe they’re basically her friends, but ‘Taylor Swift’ is a product. What she chooses to share is carefully selected based on how it’s anticipated that the fans will respond; the Miss Americana special on Netflix is basically Taylor Swift propaganda. I also understand, though, that this kind of propaganda isn’t unique to her, it’s just impressive public relations. I recently had to recognize how much I was buying into the product she’s selling.

  • @starsINSPACE
    @starsINSPACE ปีที่แล้ว +226

I think this boundary crossing is a common marketing gimmick. Teen stars are molded into this friendly gimmick very dramatically.
Teen media wants to make teen stars seem available as actual peers (or dates) for their fans. But also the marketing wants the teen idols to be role models. So the teen idols have to be very obliging to their fans. They must be nice to their fan's projections because it is "disrespectful" or "rude" to not pretend they could friends with their fans. The teen idols just have to be happy to be admired. They can't talk about invasions of privacy. They can't have the boundaries they might want.
I think Taylor Swift stands out because she continues to be so overly chummy as a marketing device even as a adult.

The people who get invited to secret sessions are carefully picked and it's not just Taylor. A TH-camr named Swiftologist was invited in 2014 and 2017 and he has a video explaining the process:
For months, Taylor and her team would look at the fan accounts (who shows their real identity and arent toxic stans) and judge their online behavior so after they've chosen the fans, the Taylornation account will send out messages and warn them about confidentiality (if anyone posts private information, they're OUT)
if the fan agrees to the location, they all meet up on a hotel reception room, gets screened, informed about the legalities/rules, and signs a waiver.
After that, they will NEVER tell fans the exact address of Taylor and would proceed to pick up fans in buses and would drive them around in circles before entering.
People invited are all separated into batches and when they arrive another screening will happen before being allowed allowed to enter the house itself.
They're only allowed on some places and would gather around one area to listen to the album. After that, they get meet-and-greets (they're not allowed to take more than one picture) and are sent back to the hotel.

Even her fans complained about the 1989 Taylor Version and want Max back for Reputation. They are so close to self-awareness but so far at the same time.

@@seerpou Respectfully, yes. I came to the conclusion above, and people shouldn't be bashed for living vicariously through others especially those who are richer and more powerful. We have a teenager living in a poor neighborhood with high crime rations and bad parents and friends and having nothing to enrich their life, like learning a language or skill or starting a hobby. What is our hypothetical teenager supposed to do? To live through others they will never meet. Celebrities know that there are poor, depressed, unhappy, ostracized people in the world and promote one sided relationships, like "Are you poor? Can't you buy anything? I'm here to give you hope that you can buy multiple mansions in your country and have a wardrobe full of clothes and shoes".

I think the independent artists do it on way more.....fishing for cheap gifts from fans. ...using them to pump up their self worth....i followed a few independent artists, i was truly disturbed. As a Taylor Swift fan myself, I think a lot of what you said rings true for the loudest and most vocal part of the fandom.
I think one part of the puzzle you missed is how she has weaved pieces of her personal life into her music to the point where people identify which songs/albums are for which ex. I think that plays a big part in building the parasocial relationship especially when you consider the psychological effects of group singing. The way some fans behave at her concerts reminds me of my church-going days.
There’s lots of swifties who proclaim that they want to give Taylor privacy wrt her personal life, yet they speculate about who her songs are about. Even the most reasonable people get sucked in and I’m guilty of it myself. It’s nearly impossible to be a casual fan and not get involved with her personal life. I can’t say I have the same relationship with most other artists’ personal lives.

Taylor doesn't seem to know that public affection is very fragile. I fear that, in light of recent events, 2016 will happen again and this time the Reputation phenomenon will not happen again. As a swiftie, i think shes very calculated and maybe she at first wanted to interact w some cuz she thought it was fun or for just like publicity or just to do something nice in the case of her surprising her young fans. However, her constant fostering of this parasocial relationship may be a personal branding thing as despite her fame shes seen as the girl next door friend type. Rather than superstar compared to other stars of her calibre. She thinks she can handle her fans however, it has been proven time and time again isnt the case, and i think she shld cease enabling borderline delusional tiers of parasocial relationships w her fans even if it makes her legit happy which i think it does seen ger reactions to fans' at concerts. For her own safety. People who keep defending her every move are insane however, she did do problematic things and have to be held accountable for them because of her huge influence. Like her copying a design of a cardigan for her merch from a small brand and her matty healy situation for eg. I think she genuinely like the connection and the joy she brings to people but she needs to stop feeding into her fans' parasocial relationship w her since its gotten so extreme especially given her brand of im just a friend and how relatable her lyrics r its easy to get swept away by the intense one sided relationships fans crafted with her.

Nothing new here. Kids threw themselves at Frank Sinatra in the 40s, Elvis created near insanity at times, Kids used to faint and some got trampled when Beatles and Rolling Stones arrived in 1965-1966. They both paid staffs to answer fan letters for them and kids thought Paul McCarthy or Mick Jagger were writing to them. Then Roadies. Kids that followed bands from town to town happened for years
Some sex parties with underage kids Certainly happened by rockers and hair bands. Sex ,drugs and rock and roll
The Micheal Jackson craze was over the top and pretty nuts. Crowd control Kids visiting his home? , Boy Bands, Spice Girls . One Direction, BTS
I actually think Taylor and Beyonce have been very responsible and kind to their fans
Taylor stopped the fan visits as she’s grown up.
She has friends that are real and I as a senior love her music and her influence on young people. Nothing evil here.

I don't think people are noticing enough how much the same stuff that you're calling out Taylor Swift for right now has been used by countless other celebrities to get people in inappropriate situations. I'm not saying that Taylor Swift specifically is grooming or targeting her fans away that Colleen ballinger did, but as someone who spent my own teams and an inappropriate social media relationship with a singer I admired and listen to I can't help but notice that she's doing the exact same things that my groomer and trafficker did to me, and the same things that Colleen ballinger did to an extent. Drake Bell is another example of a celebrity who gets way too close their fans and then it comes out later that it was because he was trying to get inappropriate services from his fans....
Even if she is doing it for engagement and loyalty rather than sexual favors, it's still fucked up.

she is not just a narcissist, that's just an entry point in stardom. she has covert narcissistic disorder for sure. meaning-she does the break-up thing for fun. she can't handle vulnerability and lows. she always has to be on gas peddle and high in dopamine and adrenalinergic love. she loves intensity, any drop in that and she is turned off and the break up happens. this is because the turning on-ness has made her a lot of money, and got her somewhere. she is deeply attached to people who have hurt her or took her to intense experiences. she hates the narcs who did it to her, yet still craves for toxicity, and she toys with empathetic men because she can't bear the idgaf attitude they have and the peace they have with themselves(money doesn't matter).
her songs are always hate songs for some other human being who either was less powerful than her or maybe an asshole to her. she can't let go. and the modern day swifties allign themselves with such toxic state of fuckedupness in their lives.

    • @San_Deep2501
      @San_Deep2501 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

Very well put. The saddest part is that many of her naive fans would just replicate the same actions as her blindly. They keep chasing the toxicity and her songs validate that behavior. In their heads, the relationship should be high on dopamine and always on the edge. Calm and stable relationships seem boring to them. So, they choose toxicity over stability and hurt others and themselves in the process. But them getting hurt is all that matters to them and not the hurt they caused. They aren't willing to take the accountability for the hurt they would have caused to empathetic men, just like their idol.
