He was devestated by the assassinations of MLK and Bobby Kennedy. This song was so emotional for him he never performed this song after this show. This song is sadly still so relevant today. I love to see that after all of these years his music is touching a new generation. It's so hard to pick a favorite. You will pick one then you hear the next. Great reaction thank you for sharing.

Sarah, at the tender age of 14 or 15, Elvis went to a black Baptist church in Mississippi. Think about the horribly racist environment he grew up in ! They recognized a soul brother, he sang in the choir. Love. When Martin Luther King was so atrociously murdered, it hit Elvis HARD! i think he cowrote this. a man can redeem his soul and fly. MLK flew. And again, from whereever you are, Elvis made us sisters in love. You are so beautifully expressive in your reaction, you brought ME to tears. Love to you, sis, from Toronto!

@@bwana-ma-coo-bah425 in my opinion, he did a lot. I remember a movie that he starred in that spoke up about and against segregation. He wouldn't perform unless his back up singers could be on stage also. Several shows wanted them out of sight and Elvis refused. He showed that mixing between blacks and whites at work and play was good, healthy and young people especially saw what he was doing. I feel like he was a voice of reason to a huge audience. A world wide audience.

@@123bgmiller I did not ask you for your opinion. just in case you missed the question, I will type it again slowly just for you.
"really? tell me what Elvis did to bring so much awareness about civil rights"
starring in a movie is has nothing to do with what he did. You might find this a little hard to believe but some one wrote that movie if it even does exist, which I highly doubt..
The black singers incident was a one of.
      Now, you wrote,
"He showed that mixing between blacks and whites at work and play was good, healthy and young people especially saw what he was doing."
How did he do this and when did he do this?
And finally Bethany Miller. Elvis's career started in 1953, right?
Tell me this, when did he start using black artists? Now, Bethany Miller, be very careful when you answer that, not that you will, because it is clear you have no fn idea what you are talking about.

1968, I was going on 13 but even as a youngster I could see, hear and read about the horrible things happening in the USA; I now understood about JFK's assasination and was hit in the face with the assassinations of RFK & Dr. King. This is why Elvis sang "If I Can Dream" to preserve the ideals of Dr. King's "Dream" and, perhaps to give us all hope that we can surmount the horrors and tragedies brought upon us by out of control governments and foul, evil entities who used racism and vile, untrue rhetoric to promote their self-serving, evil ideas.
We need to fulfill that dream now more than ever before.

I have heard many performers...but, nobody can and NEVER will have the stage presence, beautiful voice, or fantastic looks that ELVIS PRESLEY had! He was truly blessed by GOD with that SPECTACULAR voice and CHARISMA that he had!!! I have been a fan for my entire life; and I am very close to the same age ELVIS would been, if he had lived, (you know a woman NEVER tells her age)!!! I am happy to say that MISSISSIPPI is my homestate as it was his! I LOVED HIM!!! I loved the way that he loved and had so much enthusiasm for his craft! By the way, he never seemed to lose his enthusiasm, either, especially in Gospel music! He recorded almost 800 songs, made 31 movies, received numerous accolades and awards, including 1to 3, I'm really not certain, Grammys, and had at least 35 number 1 songs!!! He was very poor and grew up in the black section of Tupelo, Mississippi! His Mama shopped in all black stores and because of this, he remained humble and saw NO COLOR in society! He was a WONDERFUL human being and FANTASTIC HUMANITARIAN; which many people NEVER knew about! He gave homes to the homeless, paid medical bills for the young and old alike, when they were unable to, he bought cars for many people, and even wheelchairs and medicine for some! I can confidently say that ELVIS left the world a better place than he found it!!! ELVIS PRESLEY was, is, and always will be THE KING OF ROCK and ROLL...and HE TRULY DESERVES THE TITLE that was given to him by his fans! THANK YOU for a spectacular reaction!

    Hey Sarah
Thank you for the amazing reaction
I have listened to this song a million times and I still get emotional everytime
It's Elvis's voice and his emotions. He pours into the song. Did you know this song was recorded for Martin Luther King as a tribute song. After Elvis heard Martin Luther King was assininated
Elvis felt he had to do something to bring awareness to the situation.
That is why the song is called If I Can Dream
    After the famous speech.
    I have a dream
Elvis just wanted to bring black and whites together. Like Elvis said on stage once
The same God that made you
    Made him to
    In other words
    We are all the same
Doesn't matter what color you are
    We are all one
That's is why Elvis will always live on
    He loved everyone
Doesn't matter what the color of your skin was
    Elvis was color blind
    Thank you again

First time commenting here though I've been watching- and loving- your Elvis reactions for about a month or so now.
This is the song- and the singer- that broke me when I first discovered it about a year and several months ago.
Never before had a singer ever made me cry. But Elvis got me in a place I didn't even know existed inside of me.
He touched something within me I was not previously aware of.
By the end of the song, I'm not gonna lie, I had tears running down my face.
Elvis is the only singer that can do that to me.
He made himself into this human conduit of music and emotions that made- and still makes- people feel connected to him in some way and on some level.
You don't have to be an Elvis fan to feel connected to him in this moment. I've read the comments and even those who admit they're not an Elvis fan have commented that this was/ is the most powerful performance they've ever witnessed.
Thank you so much for continuing your Elvis journey!

Elvis was a lover not a hater. When he was told to leave his black backup singers home when he was about to perform in the astrodome, he said that he was staying home to because if his girls weren't welcomed he wasn't welcomed. Ask any black person who worked with him and they will say that he treated them like they were his brothers and sisters.

Just came across this. I know I've seen this performance dozens of times and very many reactions to it. But yeah, I love your laid-back thoughtful approach to it. Once again, near the end of it, I got goosebumps. I'm nearly 60 and I never saw this when I was a kid. I only saw it for the first time about a year ago. I mean I liked him as a kid mostly his earlier crazy rockabilly stuff I didn't like the older stuff. But now I love it all. It's amazing. What a powerful song.

Thank you again. You mentioned his powerful voice & how he sang w-such emotion -- this is one of the things that made him so unique -- & of course his deep, soothing voice -- so much about him that is lacking in singers generally. I did recommend his 1972 Hampton Roads concert with his energetic, powerful performances at your July 16th How Great Thou Art site including he url addresses -- hope you get to see it; it's certainly worth the time.

Elvis Presley was a great person and signer. I do not know, from what he died. Could you remind me? Just for curiosity. Thank you.
