My favorite too. I loved how when everyone else was trying to grapple with some arcane topic and Dietrich would just stroll up to them and spill a complete encyclopedic explanation of it.
My favorite one on there too, Even though I like all of them Real, Well, He just cracks, you up, By knowing all about anything They are talking, about,
@@michaelbarry5933 I wonder if the character of Dietrich influenced Wright in any way. Watching this, I was also thinking that Steven Wright kind of reminded me of Landesberg.
The show always was thinking man's humor before he got there but his style and particularly analytical and quirky intellectual wit was a brilliant addition.
Best Dietrich-ism. The squad recovered a device that the bomb disposal officer didn't recognize. The bomb squad guy thought it might be a stereo. The kid who made it revealed it was an atomic bomb. Barney looks at the bomb squad guy in disbelief. The bomb squad dismissively shrugs his shoulders and gives a "Nahhh!" not believing the kid. Dietrich comes in takes one look at the device and casually, in a deadpan tone, says, "Where the hell did you get an atomic bomb?" Brilliant.
@@Madbandit77 That's an interesting comparison. Egon definitely had a great deadpan delivery, but I never got the sense that he himself was ever in on the joke. Indeed Egon not infrequently appeared to be the butt of the joke as was evidenced by the playful ribbing he stoically endured from Venkman. Dietrich on the other hand clearly seemed to enjoy being the only one who was in on his own dry and relatively esoteric wit. To show that he meant well and no doubt to keep the audience in on it as well, Dietrich was usually more than happy to explain things to anyone he may have caught off guard with his odd manner. This to me is more like Mulder's dynamic with Scully and to a similar but lesser extent with those with whom Mulder interacts from episode to episode. Granted, Egon never shirks from a chance to info dump on anyone who gets him going. Again though I always got the impression that he was doing it without a sense of irony because his apparent lack of humor was always meant to be the running gag.
Nah, you missed the best line (although the setup would have been too long), when a supposed time traveler from the future is introduced to Dietrich, and says, "Wait! ARTHUR Dietrich? It's an honor to meet you, sir!"
my favorite scene was when he was talking about aliens already living among un and everyone starts looking at him funny since if anyone was an alien it was obviously dietrich. later he told them when and where he was born, said it was necessary for the cops to know so they knew he wasnt an alien.
The only thing when you sit here and Watch old Barney Miller clips is you realized. They had a bunch of Special guest appearance by some really famous people now.
My favorite Dietrich line was when that guy giving everybody a lie detector test asked him where he came from and he said "From a galaxy far far away."
The show really improved when old DD showed up! huhh!? am i right?! reminds me of ol' brownie and foster and klein. I tell you, the things those guys used to pull!
These clips are swell, but Dietrich explaining the etymology of the word “honkey” is his best scene, and the person’s response the best reaction to a Dietrich monologue.
I JUST LOVE MARTY! HE IS SO APPRECIATIVE OF THE ARTS. ...... HE ADDS GREAT HOMOUR TO THIS SHOW. SUCH A GREAT ACTOR , IN SO MANY VERSATILE EPISODE'S OF " BARNEY MILLER 🌝🌕🎇💎🔱♥️🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 THANK YOU, MARTY FOR YOUR GENIUS ON THIS SHOW ! ♥️🔱🌺🍂🌱🌻🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌝.
Barney was the core figure, but Harris , Dietrich and Wojo were the essential cast members. Chano ,from the first couple of seasons, livened up the show, too..
An interesting note about the Barney Miller series. It was so popular that police department across the nation would submit real stories to the producers . Lots of the episodes were real incidents.
When he asked Yemana if he ever wished to go to where he came from, Nick said: "I was born in Omaha". Dietrich said "Really? We have a city in Nebraska with the same name."
I loved Yemana (Mushi, Mushi), but this entire show was fantastic. You missed a really good scene where Wojo was dressed as a woman for a stakeout and Dietrich made a sterling comment about his appearance. I think about it every time I see Bruce/Kaitlyn Jenner.
Need the best of himana jack so not sure if I spelled it right especially when he’s making bets on the horses from the precinct thats funny all his lines about the horses were funny
Luger takes Filipina fiancé into Barney’s office and say hold my calls. Harris: I got 10 bucks that says she is on a plane to Manila tonight. Dietrich: 20 says he doesn’t get any calls
Ooooooohhhh, Enki, I love Det. Sgt. Arthur Dietrich! His dry humor and deadpan is fantastic!! Not hysterical, because that would be loony. Extremely funny. My Favorite character. I wonder if Steven Right could have played him. Hmm..remove the Standup and perhaps.
Dead. Pan. So much of that could not be done now. Moreover, the piece when Harris (the late Ron Glass) was in drag- the way drag is meant to be- would surely provoke arguments over whatever replaced the water cooler.
Unusual but seemingly cool guy. After "Miller" ended in 1982, he virtually disappeared for the rest of the decade, for no real reason I could find. Popped up again in the 90s in terrible movies. 2000s, the same, though I see the last thing he did was "Everybody Hates Chris" on TV, so that might have been something, had he lived. Died 2010, forgotten by all except those who remembered the 70s.
The one thing I didn't like about "Barney Miller" was the cast's attitude toward Dietrich---as if being knowledgeable is a crime in America (which it is). Every time they needed his input they all put out big sighs and eye-rolls, despising him instead of realizing their own ignorance.
My favourite character of the whole cast. His dry deadpan delivery is hysterical.
Dietruch was the best.
My favorite too.
I loved how when everyone else was trying to grapple with some arcane topic and Dietrich would just stroll up to them and spill a complete encyclopedic explanation of it.

Me too, I believe-no small feat in such an amazing cast. But his deadpan dry wit was awesome.
Nobody could have ever played this role but Steve Landesberg. Just fit that role like a glove.
Steven Wright could have given it a go.
@@michaelbarry5933 I wonder if the character of Dietrich influenced Wright in any way. Watching this, I was also thinking that Steven Wright kind of reminded me of Landesberg.
@michaelbarry5933 nah Steven Wright is Steven Wright not Dietrich. Dietrich was pure Landesberg.
Every one of the Barney Miller cast had their moments but Dietrich strung you along and then clobbered you.
Steve Landesberg was a funny guy.
He brought a sort of thinking man's humor to this show.
The show always was thinking man's humor before he got there but his style and particularly analytical and quirky intellectual wit was a brilliant addition.
One of the very best comedy characters in all of television history.
One of my fave moments when Inspector Lugar greets Dietrich with a DD and he responds IL.
“No I had hockey tickets” 😂
My family loved Dietrich's humor. We quoted him all the time.
“Honestly is the best policy, but insanity is a better defense” -Steve Landesberg
3 minutes and change isn't nearly enough time to cover the best of Dietrich.
"Lucy is pregnant."
"Boy, that Charlie Brown...he's a devil, isn't he?"
I love Dietrich's dry, understated humor!
Right it's incredibly funny straight face in all
Arthur Dietrich was the Fox Mulder prototype
More like Egon Spengler.

I'd say he was the prototype for Lenny Briscoe as well. Only Briscoe wasn't analytical or as highly intellectual as Dietrich.
I loved that show and Dietrich was my favorite character.
Abe Vigoda looked like he was 80 his entire life.
So true.
He was only in his 40s and looked twice his age.

Guy played by a terrific Character Actor (and this incredible Show had a bargeload!😂) named Richard Libertini.B.W.

@@scottmcshannon6821 If you look carefully, You can see Hal Lindon start to corpse after he said that!
Underrated. Genius...
Anyone who underrated Dietrich’s contribution to the show needs his/her head examined. 😎
It doesn't get any better than Barney Miller...greatest cast ever assembled!
Landesberg was a comedic genius. The best was when he was singing the praises of the cockroach and punctuated the lecture by stepping on one.
I always aspired to be like Arthur Dietrich, but alas I ended up more like Cliff Clavin.
Love the fact that it wasn't just indesciminanent one-liners but comedy based on the characters.
Loved this show, but with the addition of Steve Landesberg, it made it that much better.
The only thing when you sit here and Watch old Barney Miller clips is you realized. They had a bunch of Special guest appearance by some really famous people now.
I like the clip where Dietrich does a fantastic Gregory Peck impression
Dietrich was one of the best characters on “Barney Miller”. His deadpan delivery was so funny.
Go away, Beverly is busy!!
Next to Barney, I loved Dietrich.
A top 10 all-time sit-com. I need to re-watch this show.
My favorite Dietrich line was when that guy giving everybody a lie detector test asked him where he came from and he said "From a galaxy far far away."
I loved his last line of the show " I was raised by wolves"
another masterpiece, collection of VERY good actors...............
The show really improved when old DD showed up! huhh!? am i right?! reminds me of ol' brownie and foster and klein. I tell you, the things those guys used to pull!

The Atomic Bomb episode was his best moment
Might have been an influence on Steve Wright.
By far he was my favorite character on the show.

Dietrich is the greatest character created for television closely followed by Ignatowski.

No disrespect to the great Tessio but the show took off when Dietrich became a regular.
