  • Did you know that it is possible to receive image data over radio directly from a weather satellite? This is an introductory video to a series that will show you how you can do the same, and on a budget.

Something is terribly wrong here on the frequency scale ... there are no sat signals below 137MHz, they are above! Did you accidentally cross the IQ channels and this is the mirrored image beside the oscillator frequency?

It's an "issue" with the RTL-SDR, strong signals like this get aliased 1 MHz above and below their real frequency. Unfortunately I didn't notice that while recording, the follow-up video (where most of the important information actually is) has this problem fixed.
You can hear some satellites in the 136 - 137 MHz band but none of the currently active APT ones

Very thorough and well explained Derek. Looking forward to future videos in this series!

Great video. I have an SDR and I'm a ham living in Vancouver BC. Would love to try this. Will check part 2.

I have bought a fantastic SAW filter that is very narrow and will let 136.7 until 139 MHz pass with almost no insertion loss while having a very steep cut on the lower end where you need it. I am trying to run an multi connect TCP server and hope to be able to have one computer take the sat signals from that receiver, while the other one takes the VDL2 packets to be decoded.
Anyway thanks for sharing ... will hopefully try this out today

where did you find those images (not weather ones)? I'm trying to find "Historical hardware for weather satellite reception used by the CHMI" in Google but I find nothing.
