    Today I’m going to compare the Sony a6400 and the Canon EOS RP for both photography and video. We have an outstanding Sony APS-C mirrorless camera going head to head against a Canon Full Frame mirrorless camera.
    There are some similarities and some significant differences, so I will cover the strengths and weaknesses of the #a6400 and the #canon EOS RP for both photography and video, and compare everything from body type, sensor size, framerate and resolution, slow motion, auto focus, lens options, audio features, and ergonomics.
    I will also look at the #sony a6400 and the Canon EOS RP in terms of battery life, timelapse, viewfinder and streaming options and recording limit.

    What's up everyone?! I hope this comparison of the Sony A6400 and the Canon EOS RP with sample footage and images is helpful. Do you think the RP is worth the extra $? Or would you go with the a6400?
    Would love to know what you think, good or bad. I am grateful in advance 🙏

      Hi TGT or anyone, please help me understand. On APS-C I understand how you have to calculate the crop factor into the focal length and aperture ratings. And I understand how this will affect perceptual mega pixels as opposed to FF.
      My question is when the EOS RP crops when in 4K video. I understand on the EOS RP it will affect focal length, but does it also affect aperture like in APS-C cameras?

      Wow! So my wife is brand new to the world of photography and equipment. So new in fact, I am currently doing research to buy her first camera and gear setup.
      First, where do you store all this information?! Super impressive and I appreciate your time and effort of providing these thorough reviews. Based on all your reviews, I am leaning Sony A6400.
      1. Would you have a better suggestion?
      Mainly buying to capture memories of the kids, take high quality photos for our portrait wall, capture video memories, and every now and then capture some beautiful landscapes.
      2. How does the Sony photo editing software compare to other manufacturers? (Ease of use, capabilities, compatibility with other formats or software/printing agencies, etc)
      Thank you again for putting your review together!!!

    The RP with the 35mm RF is a great lightweight FF combo. I think the digital IS is handy as well - plus I find it much easier to hold a FF camera steady for video as opposed to a cropped sensor.

      That makes sense. It's so hard to switch once you're using to something. I was at a Panasonic even a week ago, and it was the first time I picked up a Panasonic camera, I felt like I didn't know how to use a camera.

    i have both, a6400 much faster camera overall, quick and reliable af, very sharp with good glass like sigma, 4K result is outstanding.RP is slower obviously, better grip, way better screen quality, IMO better color and more pleasing IQ sooc and really good high ISO performance as well. Never use 4K on it since no dual pixel af but 1080p quality is really good.

    The only problem of the 6400 is getting wide FOV unfortunately like any crop sensor. It’s kind of important for a lot of youtubers. It’s kind of impossible to get wide and blurred on crop sensors.

    • @TechGearTalk
      @TechGearTalk  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Interesting. Every video I've made in the past 3 years was shot on a crop sensor. I've never felt that it's a limiting factor. Of course I understand the FF could offer a shallower DOF but with the proper lenses and technique - a crop sensor has worked well for me. Even with inexpensive lenses like: th-cam.com/video/uORT1dfeS0M/w-d-xo.html thought?

    Always enjoy your reviews. They are clear and informative. The review is not 3 year old but still worth watching. I use my RP with the EF-EFS adapter so that I can use my Canon DSLR lenses. I did purchase the 24-195 kit lens and the 16mm lens. When using EFS lenses I get a vignette but if i use the crop setting in the RP it goes away. The one critique I have of the video is when you and many others use the profile shot and do not look at the camera! I have heard that it is to avoid viewer fatique. But in my view it is rude and I call it the rude profile. I think it is rude because if me and you were talking you would not look away. I know, it is some kind of filming technique but that does not make it right. I would presume a really progressive videographer would include a shoot of the back of the head! Why not? Aside from that vent, good video.

I have a question about the ability of using the a6400 as a streaming camera and it being powered while in use and not relying on battery life. I still use my A6000 with a couple of Sigma primes. I don't go above ISO 1600 on the A6000. Lot of noise and reduction in sharpness. I crop a lot before posting on social media. Is the A6400 a decent upgrade over the A6000? Is it usable at ISO 3200? Thanks.

    Hey, awesome content man, best in depth out there. I have a kinda complicated question, im looking for a camera for shooting almost only stills (like 90%), of my family (1 yr old kid) and maybe some vacations. Since a lot of that is going to be indoors, i kinda need good low light, and also love a full frame camera. I’ve had the Canon eos R + 24-105 rf befor and i loved it. And i have also had the a6300 + sigma 1.4 primes, which i didnt think i could get the quality i wanted out of sometimes. Now, do i get the eos rp + 24-105 OR the a6400 with 2 sigma primes (16mm & 56mm). It’s about the same price, but is the rp that much worse than the R when only taking stills (taking new firmware into account aswell, which i didnt have on my Old R)? And will i even feel a difference with the a6400 over the a6300 i had and wasnt impressed with all the time? Woa long one, sorry 😅

    • @TechGearTalk
      @TechGearTalk  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So first, what happened to the R? I think if you're used to Canon, just grab the RP with an adapter and either use RF lenses, or less expensive EF lenses. I'm happy with the a6400 but I love the Canon color for jpegs.

    • @martinjrgensen8377
      @martinjrgensen8377 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I sold the R, which i kinda regret, just thought i had a bit more invested in a Camera than i maybe needed to have. So thought the rp were a good choice if it’s not so tuned down on the photography side as the video is. The plan were to get the 24-105 for versatility, but i dont know if the a6400 with a few primes would be the better option. It’s the same price, so guess im leaning towards the rp 🤔
      Also, it’s absolutely awesome you take the time and effort to answer these comments! 100% a new sub here 👌

    • @TechGearTalk
      @TechGearTalk  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad I can be of any help. I would honestly stick with the RP. 2 lenses instead of 1 already means you need to carry an extra lens. Sure, they open wider than the Canon which would be helpful in low light - but I don't know if that will be significant. Best gear is the gear you have with you!

    Full frame is full frame. There are looks on the full frame that can't be replicated on an APS-C sensor no matter how good that cropped sensor is. As a photography camera, the RP is great. I wouldn't get it for video (because of how it doesn't have DPAF in 4K). I have the EOS R and love it so much for both photography and video. My secondary camera is the 6D2 and the RP wasn't enough of a change to consider switching my secondary.

    • @TechGearTalk
      @TechGearTalk  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I really liked the R. A lot of people gave it a really tough time when it first came out and I'm not sure why. I address that in my first impressions video of the EOS R.

      Do you use RF lenses or adapter EF?

    • @onlysublime
      @onlysublime 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm strictly using the control ring EF adapter with EF and EF-S lenses. Such a nice ability to use both EF and EF-S lenses. The 10-18 mm EF-S has image stabilization and all EF-S lenses are budget friendly. The control ring is amazing, and I can't imagine not having the control ring anymore. I haven't purchased any RF lenses yet because they're so expensive. I did try them out and they're beautiful. But out of budget for now. My next lenses are 70-200 (which will be RF), a 35 mm 1.4 (which will hopefully be RF), and a macro lens (mostly likely the 100 mm EF one). I do want to get the ND filter adapter as well. However, it's disappointing to know that I will be losing the control ring when using the ND filter adapter. The other disappointment is knowing that the ND filter adapter doesn't come with a clear filter so the idea of having to swap adapters is pretty bad.

      "Full frame is full frame" Your comment which is completely true is also a little misleading as obviously there is a point where a Full Frame camera will be able to get a shallower DOF that the APS-C cannot match unless you can find a lens with a super small f-stop but in general if you calculate the crop factor you can get the same image, both field of view and DOF in a APS-C camera.
      i.e. FF 75mm @ f2.8 produces the the same image as APS-C (1.5x crop) 50mm @ f1.8 - you would also have different ISO settings to match exposure.

      @@TravelDigitalNomad but 6600 is a little bit expensive😂

    Thank you for the informative and detailed comparison. I honestly think this would be helpful for someone starting out with their first dive in. I only say that because me for instance, I have $4000 in Sony lenses and that's not much considering how much Sony lenses cost. Meaning if you are invested, you would have to keep or sell and start all over again. However always remember that you don't need either of these cameras but the one you own to take great photos and make great videos.

      Totally agree. I also believe in investing in an ecosystem more than a body. Appreciate your thoughtful contribution to the community 🙏🏻

    Firstly, great video as always. Thank you for taking the time to do this.
    Im pretty new. I was under the impression a full frame camera would do better in low light and have greater dynamic range. But in this case it seems like the APS-c is better in low light. I really want to focus more on artistic low light portrait photography. Am I right in thinking the Sony a6400 would be the better option?

      Thank you for the kind words. A lot of this depends on how people use the term "low light". As an advice, I would always say "adding light is your best option" (see this video: th-cam.com/video/q2hs8BOTXb4/w-d-xo.html ) What is the use case you are planning for when you say "low light portrait photography". Is it truly where there isn't enough light, or where you use light creatively to light a portion of the subject?

    I currently have a Canon 6D, which is really showing it's age. Having a REALLY hard time between these 2 cameras. The only lense I have for Canon, is the nifty fifty, so not super invested. I primarily shoot my family, and getting tired of out of focus shots while playing games with my kids. I'm nervous about going crop sensor after having full-frame, but good pictures is most important to me... any suggestions on which would be better here? Thanks - your videos are oustanding!

      Thanks for the kind words. Both will work really well for you. Check out this camera if you’re not locked on canon or Sony, it’s one of my favorites th-cam.com/video/nVLe9FPUV7s/w-d-xo.html

    Hello I’m a new subscriber, would the RP be a good camera for vlogging and streaming? I like the wide angle look on TH-cam videos and for photography I like landscape shoots from my hikes

    Hey sir can i ask which is better for a portrait, fashion and wedding photography. So sony a6400, sony a7ii or the canon rp ? Thank you so much and btw your vid is the only one who talks honestly and give that much info about both of camera.

      All three would do a great job. I like the handling on the RP the best. You sure you want to spend $ on full frame glass?
