I used to think that owning a 6620, then we got a 9500...NO turning back after running that.

My Uncle owned a 7720 Turbo and I rode many laps up and down the field in that machine. We had a 6 row corn header with our. He harvested corn, beans, and wheat. I also enjoyed riding with him because I got to operate the swinging of the auger as well as pulling the handle up to unload the corn since they where located right by the door. I have also taken many naps while sitting on the floor and resting my head on the seat. I was sad to see that combine go but really enjoyed the upgrade to a 9500 which came with a buddy seat for me to sit on, so no more floor for me.

Yep, but now they're kind of small by modern standards 30+ years later, and 2.2 bushels/second is a very slow unloading rate

It's odd to me seeing older combines like these using their straw choppers on corn. The old Gleaner combines we had when I cut my teeth learning how to operate harvesting equipment had choppers that could be slid forward past the straw walkers and disconnected to prevent wear on the components. Still awesome to see older machines out in the field getting the job done!

Was only around a few of these. One neighbor had one, his cousin , had a 7720. Both machines were considered the big rigs in the county. Both required a lot of maintenance yearly, but they did cover a lot of acres annually. There's still a 6620 next farm over. The family bought it new, on a smaller acreage. A big farmer I worked for back in the mid 90s, had a late 8820 and a 9600 while I worked for them. That 8820 was traded for a 9610 the last year I put up with the jerk that ran the place. I would have loved to get it from the dealer, but they wanted way too much. I guess they had too much in it to make the original trade. All those walker type machines had serious issues with breakage in there, and bent cranks. The reason I went to a Axial Flow for my operation.

It made a lower center of gravity, not really an issue on the 8820's but it did on the 6600's and smaller. They wanted to maintain the same configuration through the whole family so they did it on the larger ones also. Here on the hills of central Pa, the Massey Ferguson's with the front engine, or earlier, having the engine mounted down behind the front axle, ruled the field until JD moved the engine up beside the cab. Once JD brought out the sidehill's, Massey's days were over around here.
