Thanks for sharing, I too make Cane's. It's always nice too see someone else's perspective on making and carving wood. I am 65, and have been a woodworker and artist for over 51 years. Something I enjoy very much. Keep up the good work. Take care. GF1 😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁👍👍👍👍👍👍
Lynda I was just browsing through looking at videos and ran across this one. I love kind, talented people and Mountain Man certainly seems to be genuine as both. I pray he is well , as this was put out 3 years ago, but I know he is ok either way. God bless him and you for putting out this video.
I wish I could have a video chat, or to simply be right there where you're at and work side-by-side with you to learn everything that you are willing to teach me about making those types of wooden staff that beautiful. I live in Alaska and I am a staff maker at the age of 34 I just started with staffs and I have quite a bit of tools. I'm not great but I've made a couple very beautiful ones, right now I'm starting to try to learn how to carve and etch wood, but to learn how to make diamond willow be as beautiful as the ones in your thumbnail, I need more training please! Sensai!
God bless you mountain man! From one to another. I appreciate you sharing your talent with the world.after all that's what we are here to do.i hope you got your new scooter Sir.
Excellent video. My youngest son crafted for me a beautiful staff as a gift. It has my name, a turquoise inlay, deerskin wraps, and a hawk's talon on the top. It started me collecting walking sticks. Sincerest best wishes Mountain Man. In prayer.
I took a valuable lesson from this. "If you need a tool, Buy it don't borrow it." Hope all is well with the mountain man and if not hopefully he found some peace.
Mr Wayne thank you for sharing your beautiful craft. Yesterday someone while doing yard work for me cut down a beloved dogwood that my dear mother planted yrs ago. I've been so heartbroken over it. I wanna make a walking cane from it to remember her by. Your video has given me much hope. Thank you sir and much blessings to you. ❤
I wish you could too. I'm sure it won't be as beautiful as your works of art. However I'm very thankful I came across your video. Thanks for the advice! I didn't know. See you already saved me from ruining it. 😃 Can you suggest what type of finish and sealant would work best for dog wood?
Watch oil is my favorit finish stick with 200 sand paper and apply the Watco oil with a clean rage let stand for 10 min's they wipe it down with a white rag every couple of hr.'s till no color is on the white cloth, let dry a couple of days and presto your cane is finish. if you want to varnish later use varathane ( not nessary)
That my friend is an excellent video, I know it is an older video, and I have read your pinned comment, I hope he was able to sale enough to get his scooter he wanted prior to getting sick. Bless his heart I hope he is better. Thanks for sharing this bit if information and history with us. Great story. Dale
I enjoyed your video sir. I'm 72 years old and use two canes myself. I hope you were able to make and sell enough canes and walking sticks to buy your new scooter. Good luck sir, and keep up the good work on your canes.
Hey Wayne! It's the guy who came and serviced your house from pest control yesterday. It was awesome meeting you. Great video as well. Hope to come back and see the progress on the snake cane in a few months.
I'm sorry to say that there isn't a website to order from because Mountain Man hand crafts each walking stick by hand and each one is by custom design. Since posting this video Mountain Man's health hasn't been so good and he's almost went to be home with the Lord a few times. Please keep him in prayer. Thanks!
I just saw this video for the first time. I see you posted about the decline in "Mountain Man's" health a year ago. Of course I am so sorry that he and the one's close to him were struggling, and of course however things turned out I only hope that you all are at peace, hoping he recovered from his sickness, or if his time was finished on this side of his journey I only hope that he is peaceful now with no suffering. He appeared to be the type of fella that everyone would benefit from knowing, I think I would have been honored if I could have known this wise gentleman, I know he could have taught me a lot, not only with his such beautiful walking sticks that I too so enjoy creating, but I am quite sure he could have taught me a lot more just about life with his unique, yet simple and comfortable wisdom of words and conversation. Thank You Mr. Mountain Man for allowing me the pleasure of a glimpse into your world , if only for a brief moment that made such a feeling of goodness in my heart, that feels like much more than a moment. I hope where ever you are at you are at peace , and know you have left a impression that is priceless, and to me it does not get any better than that.
Lynda, thank you for creating this video and making a permanent record of the wonderful heart of Mountain Man and his beautiful works of art and utility.
I've got a twisted vine walking stick. It was rough when I got it. I cleaned it thoroughly and clear coated it with a rattle can. It sealed up nicely. I've got a crutch tip on the bottom and I'm waiting to receive my cue ball in the mail. I'm gonna dremel the cue ball until it fits over the top, then 2 part epoxy the cane into it. I think a cue ball will make a comfortable handle.
@@waynemathias5413 it's a white cue ball. Sorry to disappoint. It's off white like the rubber tip. All earth tones. I'm afraid an 8ball, as cool as they are, would look gaudy. I ordered it on Amazon.
How (if it can be done) would you make a stick in sections taking it apart to hold in the rucksack. Made my first , walking in the woods With my pen knife great if I could make into sections ?
i am planning to make a cane for hiking from hemp, and i know cross borderss, you need wood to be varnished or sealed so not to instroduce invasive species, I have a collections of old wood sticks... old timers would love to work on , or new generation
What was the name of the thing he sat on to shave off the bark? Did he say stencil bunk? I'm trying to make something similar and wanted to find some plans for one.
A Schnitzelbunk or Shaving Horse was a tool used for hundreds of years to help shape wood. The shaving horse is a simple foot-operated vice that allows you to hold a piece while having both hands free to work.
schnitzel bunk a German name for a carving bench, In my home town Of German decent we had a bar and they called it the Schnitzel bunk because the old people would set out I front of it carving
To most people, the words “walking cane” and “walking stick” mean the same thing. In some ways they are right. But, the truth is that there are a subtle differences between the two. Most of these differences are based on their functionality. Canes are designed primarily for support and are generally built to take on more body weight. However, walking sticks are mainly used for maintaining a good balance while walking or hiking. Some people use these words to mean two different things. Some believe they mean the same thing. But, it is more important that you know there are different types of canes and sticks available on the market. You also need to know which is the right type for you, should you need one.

I thought it would be nice to make a walking cane or some type of staff from a vine. Which has a nature curvature to it. Well, turns out i made a big mistake picking a vine that has hairs growing on it, turns out that it is some form of poison ivy. After i got the vine to its wood status, after many hours came to pass i started feeling a bit itchy and started looking up poison vines, and sure enough it was Toxicodendron radicans. I hope my time wasn't all wasted on making a staff out of this vine. i'm thinking that the hairy roots are the poisonous portions and not the wood portion it self. So i'm hoping once its dyed and stained with linseed oil it be okay, That is if the wood it self isn't also poisonous. I think my next step in learning bushcraft is too learn all types of plants. It all started with making rope from monkey grass. lol
