    AS AN OLDER ADULT WHO REMEMBERS KIM VERY WELL,LET ME JUST SAY SHE WAS THE REAL DEAL,THO UNDERRATED AS ANY FEMALE SINGER FROM THE 1960'S.AND I HAVE TO GIVE HER A HUGE SHOUT SINCE AS OF TODAY,12-2-22,SHE IS ALIVE AND WELL AT AGE 82 NOW.IN FACT,IF SHE LIVES TO SEE DEC.20TH OF 2022,KIM WILL TURN 83.MAY GOD CONTINUE TO BLESS HER WITH LIFE AND LIVING.

    Just Loving You was my favorite song by Kim Weston. Powerful song. If you listen to the live Motown Revue album from 1964 brings down the house. Along with the Andantes backing her up

      They did the same thing to Phyllis Hyman and Miki Howard too. It's absolutely ridiculous how they got away with so much deceit. But one day...they will have to answer for it all.

    Thanks Chancellor! Great episode & I always think of this great lady's appearance in WattStax singing my favorite version of "Lift Every Voice And Sing". I always learn something not known previous on these great music biographies. Like I didn't know that Kim Weston recorded a version of the great songwriter Tony Hester's " Beautiful People" as a B-side 45. A radio disc jock should have flipped that 45 over as some did back then. I've only heard the Dramatics excellent version - who Hester wrote it for.

    • @Musicradio77Network
      @Musicradio77Network 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The original version of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” was done by the Manhattan Harmony Four in 1923, and then it was remade by so many people over the years including the Southern Sons from the 1940’s where they did in a cappella. That was where doo-wop never existed in 1923.

    • @MrNewktrane
      @MrNewktrane 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Musicradio77Network The music family chain of influence of doo wop & beyond goes back to the mix of gospel quartets & early jazz/r& b/pop groups starting to emerge in the 20s & 30s like the under recorded Heavenly Gospel Singers & the Mills Brothers. But also to the early sounds that influenced those sounds of the 20s & 30s as well- in the form of the various Black University singing choirs such as Fisk, which gave us the influential Fisk Jubilee Singers back in the 1870s. The Mills Brothers had a huge influence on the next waves of r&b vocal groups like the Ravens who in turn would have a huge influence on future doo wop vocal groups as they made the unique decision to record the great Jimmy Rick's bass voice as lead instead of backing vocal. Mr. Rick's set the standard for all future great bass voices such as the Dell's Chuck Barksdale, the Temptations Melvin Franklin, the Persuasions Jimmy Hayes and solo voices like Lou Rawls, Issac Hayes & Barry White.

    • @Musicradio77Network
      @Musicradio77Network 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MrNewktrane That’s because the Manhattan Harmony Four was the first black vocal group to record the original “Lift Every Voice And Sing” as a gospel song from 1923. It was written during the Civil War in 1861. The song was covered by so many people over the years and it became a staple of the black community.
      As I was saying, 1923 was way too early for doo-wop music, and it started to come in as a spiritual song. It has four guys and a piano with no orchestra.

    Kim Weston was, without any doubt, the strongest female voice ever affiliated with the Motown label. In a fair & just world (one where Gordy wasn't mainly focused on Diana bc he was screwing her), Kim would have been their premiere female superstar. What a voice.

      Most of our musician's did not know or understand the business side of the music world, which can be very nasty and vicious...in the past with older musicians would record with companies and work with crooked promoters that would only pay them a nickel on the dollar, give big cars and homes then lie to them ABT the real money....
      their contracts would be written so bad & not in their behalf , a lot of them did not understand they were selling their soul to the devil. They would not even own their catalogs😱

    I think in the book by Mickey Stevenson, Holland-Dozier-Holland, wrote "Love Makes Me Do Foolish Things", and it was supposed to go to her but Martha and the Vandellas ended up with the hit. They then wrote "Take Me In Your Arms", for Kim Weston which was a great song. But I like her on ballads. Very powerful voice

I couldn't think of who it was until I saw your comment. Their voices are better than many of the more popular female artists at Motown.

    In case you are missing out, earlier in this episode, Kim Weston’s “Take Me In Your Arms” became a #4 R&B hit, and it was later covered by the Isley Brothers where it reached #22 in 1968.
    th-cam.com/video/5lfHasTCx9k/w-d-xo.html
    And then, Jermaine Jackson also covered his classic and it was on the B-side to “Daddy’s Home” in 1972.
    th-cam.com/video/Ofx_TbwPP7c/w-d-xo.html
    And finally, the Doobie Brothers with their version of “Take Me In Yours Arms” and it reached #11 pop in 1975.
    th-cam.com/video/eNxVozAO41Q/w-d-xo.html
    According to what he mentioned that Kim Weston was going to do showtimes, but Berry Gordy said that t "Motown is a record label, and they don't do showtunes". And they did. Marvin Gaye was the first to do standards for his debut album "The Soulful Moods of Marvin Gaye" in 1961, and did some showtunes, and then, the Four Tops did some standards and showtunes for their album "Four Tops On Broadway" in 1966, and "On Top" in 1965 where they did some standards, Billy Eckstine when he was at Motown did three albums of standards and showtunes, and the Temptations once did standards and showtunes for the album "The Temptations in the Mellow Mood" in 1967, and Diana Ross & Supremes did showtunes for the album "Diana Ross and the Supremes Sings and Performs 'Funny Girl'" in 1968 around the same time, the movie "Funny Girl" came out with Barbra Streisand in her film debut. Prior to their “Funny Girl” album, the Supremes did a handful of show tunes and some Disney songs, and these were recorded around 1966 or 1967, but it stayed in the can until 1985 when it was featured on the compilation album “25th Anniversary”, and on the “Never Before Release Masters” album in 1986.

    Shame that you didn't mention Kim's double CD 'Motown Anthology' which was released in 2005. It includes many previously vaulted tracks including her version of 'Stop! In The Name of Love'. All Kim's best work was with Motown buy Gordy held her back along with Brenda Holloway & Blinky Williams! She should have been a big star but her post Motown material was too MOR!
