I feel like I’m going to get some more comments like this lmao. The developer said he took inspiration from quake and hotline Miami as well as ultra kill
It absolutely makes sense. Movement shooters are fun because *movement* is fun. Who doesn't enjoy flying through the air? I feel like when graphics became capable of being more realistic, we had this intrinsic desire to make our games more realistic as well. And in the process we lost something.
Love this! As an indie developer, I can tell you that coverage around our games whether from massive youtubers or those starting out is such an honor and brings alot of joy. I am happy to see bloodthief getting more recognition
I like watching devlogs. And Blargis is certainly a good at doing them. It is the first devlog where I made two of my friends watch all of them. I'm personally not really a gamer. I enjoy the community aspect of it and I like to watch let's plays, but I rarely play myself. So I won't download the game. But I appreciate you making the game more known. It really deserves it.
I like that you admit to not knowing too much about dev; so many youtubers talk quite authoratively about stuff that they don't seem to know much about I like that you're genuinely really into this; again, there's a lot of fake enthusiasm on YT. Great video
Dev might want to take a look into how Hellblade 2: Senua’s Saga hides their shader compilations. During the user’s first time running the game, it secretly runs the shader compilation process in the background, while the player is distracted by getting their user settings dialed in like difficulty/keybinds. This might feel a bit smoother as player vs a loading screen. Great video and if you like things about game dev/design, you should keep learning! Edit: Engine context.
I find it funny how a lot of people think that old game design automatically gets outdated once a new thing comes out. Sure graphics, interfaces and other stuff might change, but good design is timeless.
Other than the script notes said by others. Good video Man U got a sub from me .. plus this popped in my recommended page so you are doing something right, the algorithm favors you at the moment.
you have a really good natural way of speaking! i agree with making the script a little tighter and more concise but i really enjoyed your approach it makes it feel like talking to a friend
That's called an acrobatic shooter, and is one of those lessons that has been forgotten to time. This is the reason because any serious developer should play classics, you will find a lot of archaic systems that aren't used anymore for a reason, but there is also a lot of things to learn and gameplay loops that feel fresh because everyone overfocuses on the trendy stuff.
This is not 199X game design, it just has a vaguely 199X aesthetic. also, describing it as a "FPS melee game" does not make sense, it is not an "FPS" (first-person shooter) if it doesn't involve shooting as the main mechanic.
The developer described it as such. There is a crossbow you can acquire and shoot, so technically it is an FPS. I’d say given that the developer himself took inspiration from level design of the 90s, it definitely uses things that were popularized back then. I mean he literally described it himself, he has a video called “bringing back the genius level design of the 90s in my game”.
@@wellybawb it may be the developer describing their own game that way but i still question it. i suppose it is probably more like a 199X game than most games but game design is naturally built on ideas from the past so taking some ideas from the past doesn't mean it is not still modern design.
I'm very much sure you should try quake [1, not 2 and definitly not 3 and 4 or champions] at first it won't be fast, but the longer you play the faster it gets, and it has some cool stuff. I'd say, give it a try.
@@brahillms1374 That's not game design, anybody who happens to be limited on resources should do it. In fact, it is commendable to do it for extra speed regardless of whether you are limited or not. Game design is more about the story of the game, and also the mechanics like the blood bar and speed dashing.
>nostalgia bait This is interesting, because while it could be true that nostalgia bait is a thing this particular niche is very hard (since we are mostly old and like what we like) on games claiming to be boomershooters that don't end up delivering. Because if they don't have good gameplay what even is the point?
@@wellybawb wow thats suprisingly late, but i guess still better than never. Welcome to pc gaming fam. Check out the classics as they are infinitely better than most modern shit. 🤪 Good luck

This was so fun to watch. Thanks for playing!
Thank you, Blargis! Good luck in the rest of the game’s development.
You enjoying a game with an aesthetic before your time is just proof that a well designed game, regardless of the aesthetic is timeless.
well said 🤝
Mixture bewteen quake and hotline miami? son in christ, its medival ultrakill

The aesthetic is very quake-like
I actually immediately recognized this game from one of the dev's videos I watched! I'm glad it seems like his game is going well :)

We already passed the realism focused era of gaming.

The Dev documents the game's development on YT, and the game is made in Godot

Exactly
6:48 Interesting, I've only heard of vampire survivors once until just now when you said it, I just thought it was some obscure game.
Just found this channel too. Nice to see some good recommendations.
Carmack would be proud
it looks like Ghostrunner only medieval and graphics like Quake 1

5:40, what i've noticed at game jams is that it doesn't matter AT ALL what your game is, if it has a scoreboard it's going to be grinded until stupor.

I've been saying it for years: the best games are the games that know what they are and stick to it.

the movement reminds me of Titanfall 1 or 2

0:45 I don't really see it, it just looks like a video game, how is that 90s related?
a lot of 90s 3d games had low poly models and had very blocky environments.

hollow knight is made by 2 people
This is a cute video. But you probably should play some 90s games before making a video about a game that shares their design allegedly
