Both are good. I like this one a bit more then that sequel because the story and action is so contained. It keeps the intensity at such a high level it doesn't matter how many time you watch it, it still keeps you on the edge of your seat. The sequel is almost like The Godfather in terms of a sweeping family drama with a lot of great fight scenes. I just sometimes don't have the time to invest in such a movie.

Raid was very refeshing to see at the first time, it just stood out from every other action movie I've seen.. The action is quick paced but still easy to follow. No crazy quick cuts but a lot of excellent camerawork. And it's brutal as heck, and even though I'm not a huge fan of gory violence I still think it's better to portray it like that over the "lip cut after 15 hits in the face" which I mostly grew up with. Haven't seen Raid 2 but I want to. Another one to consider is The Night Comes For Us, though that one is REALLY GORY. Some of the same actors involved.
If you want to see something different from Gareth Evans, the director, I would happily recommend Apostle, a horror movie.
Excellent actors.. Very beautifully shot, very gloomy, very dark.

@@JamesVSCinema I'm just starting it now but I can already anticipate your appreciation for their directing choices as well. Because not only is the fight-choreography great, the film-makers do a beautiful job of portraying the action. It has very few of those annoying '10-cuts in 5 seconds' type of action scenes that are in a lot of Hollywood movies. Though yes, this does inspire a lot of movie and TV directors in recent years to capture fights much more clearly.

    • @JamesVSCinema

I think about the shot where the camera falls through the hole in the floor at least once a week. @@JamesVSCinema The 2nd one is quite a bit different in terms of setting/lot to this one. Where in this it's a very simple plot and one setting, the second film massively expands on the scope to the point where it's pretty much a crime epic in the vein of The Departed, except with AMAZING fight scenes thrown in throughout. The story basically goes the director wrote the second film first, but didn't have the budget to make it at the time, so wrote and made the first film, with its much smaller scope/budget, as a way to hopefully get the budget to make the sequel.

Loving your reviews. Glad you picked up on the camerawork, which stands back and lets the action sequences shine, no quick cuts, close-ups or flashy editing. This was raw, you see every hit. The story is basically a video game scenario...the protagonist has to work his way up the various levels. You definitely should watch the sequel. Its more epic, longer, but with some standout sequences. The similarity to the Karl Urban Judge Dredd is also noticable, also taking place in a tower block with Dredd having to work his way to the top, and thats also highly recommended.

6:20 the camera following the character fell through that hole, or the part when the main character smashing the bad guy's head to the wall and the camera following it, it makes the movie even more immersive and makes the audience feels like they're actually there involved in the action, and I think that what makes the whole thing works.

@@JamesVSCinema I appreciate your words man! Watching this video I actually got thinking if you're interested in other foreign films? Because one of my countries' (Denmark) most revered films is "The Hunt (2012) " with Mads Mikkelsen, and I'd love to see you react to that sometime in the future if you're interested. It's a hauntingly realistic drama, with great writing, and some of our best danish actors in it.
No one on TH-cam has reacted to it yet, and if I know one thing about Danish people, it's that we grow strangely patriotic when non-danish people react to something danish, so I'm sure it would bring some Danish people to the channel as well! I've always been interested in seeing what a non-danish person thinks about our films :)
We also have an interesting film movement called "Dogme 95" (there's a great Wikipedia article on it), with 10 strict rules that challenge the filmmaker to think outside the box regarding the aspect of film production. Something to look into if you're interested in a unique take on filmmaking.

Hey dude, really glad you highlighted the fact that it 100% excels at what the director was aiming for, even if that lets down some of the more usual tentpoles of "good cinema". I've seen this movie get a bit of derision from some people for lackluster character development/plot/whatever, and I really don't get the problem. Sometimes you just want a cheeseburger (or action movie), not a 13 course Michelin star dinner. Not everything has to be Oscar bait, and that doesn't make it a bad movie

Your photographic skills are exotic and unique, with images that pop right out of the frame. That picture of the angel falling out the sky is one for the ages. Likewise, your videography is equally interesting, even if at this point it resembles your still photography. The midpoint reversal of motion, or mirroring effect(s), is really all you need to make little movies, and here you've done so effectively. I wonder, though, have you given any thought to threading them together into a longer piece? In it, Bresson attempts to isolate the qualities that set cinema apart from all other mediums, in effect what makes cinema-cinema, and the barest essential elements which makes this so. By turn, he goes on to argue that every filmmaker has a responsibility to look inside themselves and find those things which only each individual can provide.
