You an me both, although i am a year or two younger (hey, it counts at our age). Doing my A-levels and listening to this on a recording off the radio on my walkman, hoping the tape wouldnt implode. Kids these days, never having to untangle a c90 hoping to not have lost some treasured tunes that might not be recoverable.
      Dont know they are born!

I've lived through many decades of music: every one of them had music that I didn't get, couldn't understand but there has always been music I could appreciate and some call me back to hear again.
This is an amazing example of it's era, one that calls me back time and time again. Old now, disabled too but still dancing in my dreams.

      Rave on.
It was a time where time stood still.
I remember going to a 'club' and spending a hour or two with someone who was a couple of decades older than me.
He said this moment is what the 70's generation tried to create and failed.
It wasn't until the 90's that it came true.
The summer of love in 92-94 was amazing. If you missed it you missed something glorious. It wasn't just the music, it was the openness of the time. Everyone was welcome, age colour or creed. We were just one Unity. If that doesn't mean something to you. You weren't there.....

born '79 and in the 1990 I got my hands on The Clash London Calling.
I was listening to it over and over again, and there there was this song out of nowhere. Teenage me: "wait a minute I know this base line, this is Paul Simons from Guns of Brixton".
Later on I found out that lyrics or at least parts of it are from The S O S Band "Just Be Good To Me" 1983
Still this song is nicely put together has a nice vibe to it, nice vocals. Even though it is not my preferred genre it is still a very good song, and in comparison of you hear on the radio these days it (arguably) might be called a masterpiece. ;)

  • @Rapscallion2009
    @Rapscallion2009 ปีที่แล้ว +15

The thing is - this kind of music was pretty revolutionary at this point. It's essentially a stepping stone between rock and hip hop. Whilst a LOT of 80's pop relied heavily on electronic instruments & was very heavily produced, this song took it a bit further than most. Sampling was commonly seen in many musical genres by this point, but this was also flirting with rock, pop, dance and hip-hop. It was paving the way for the eurobeat to come a few years later. A lot of music stations were putting away the leather jackets and big hair and instead getting bright parachute pants and shiny things & didn't really know what to make of what "young people" were suddenly in to. Somehow it sounded both familiar and revolutionarily fresh at the same time.
It was popular with DJs. You could put this on, or Back to life by Soul 2 Soul and instantly get the floor shaking from the bassline and everyone moving. A lot of dance music that would only really happen in a dance club - but everyone felt the groove with these.

The Summer of 1990 was actually a very hot one - setting records in July and August.
But I think everyone imagines that time of their life - magically suspended between the carefree childhood and the responsible adult worlds - was somehow brighter and longer than it actually was. I rode around on my 125cc motorcycle and dreamed of a wild, fulfilling life and enjoyed the hot weather. The bike was only worth a few hundred quid but I had a lot of fun on it and never stopped to think "is this impressing anyone" - I enjoyed it the way a 5 year old enjoys a new toy that catches their imagination and won't stop to look at the price tag. Life was good before it went bad.
Life is less fun as we get older and I do wonder to what extent we do it to ourselves. You need to get a mortgage, you need to have a newish car, you need to be responsible and compliant with everything everyone from the boss to your spouse expects of you. Don't tinker with that car, it'll effect the residuals. Don't paint your house as you'd like it - it's no longer your home buy an investment vehicle for the future you're only looking after. Don't dress like that - it's too young for you and don't listen to that music - aren't you getting a bit old for that hobby or interest, why not take up gardening instead? Why can't you be more like Mike?
The monologue at the beginning of trainspotting had a point - even if the conclusions it reached were all wrong.

Lindy Layton is the vocalist. She also appeared on the band's follow-up UK Top 10 hit ''Won't Talk About It'' (so they aren't a one-hit wonder). Additionally, she then went on to secure a major solo record deal with Arista records, releasing several singles and an album. She then continued to record with many other artists and was at one stage in the 1990s signed to Pete Waterman's PWL record label!
