  • I did a podcast episode on Magnetic Park and The Fountain House in Cherokee, Iowa - covering the story of the discovery of an artisian well - and magnetic spring - that brought thousands to Cherokee for the use of the magnetic water (which they felt brought healing qualities for those who drank or bathed in it.
The video shows me following up from the podcast, and walking the actual grounds where the historic area would have been located. There is a trail system there today celebrating the history of Magnetic Park and the Fountain House.
The footage of the circus was not direct circus footage from Cherokee. However, it was the actual circus that did come to town in 1900 - which the Cherokee Historical Society has a picture of on Main Street. This was the Adam Forepaugh & Sells Bros. Circus. This footage was taken in 1901, and would have been the same circus that came down Fountain, on their way to perform under the big top in Magnetic Park.
The video footage can be found with the Library of Congress - public domain with year - and under use for educational purposes - and was gifted to the Library by Thomas A. Edison. Below is the reference.
