In Hong Kong and China fish market fish sell out really fast, so maybe in the day the fish are so compact together in a small tank(they still can move but not much space) but in the end of the day most of them already sold out already.
Most fish store owner really do care about their fish quality so they care about the fish way far more than you expected. When I was small I use to go to fish market in HK and I love to look at all those beta fish they hv, even though they are in a small places but they move a lot! Not like those in petsmart and petco which only sit in the cup and wait to die.
The fish my family had bought from the fish market when I was in HK lives so long and healthy. I think we had some of them before I was born to almost elementary school gradations! But those from Petco, less than a year!

Most chinese (and asian) pet stores are owned by individuals, so unlike our US chain pet stores like petsmart and walmart, they care about their fish and have a lot more variety they obtain by themselves. A petstore I went in Taiwan had many great things... sharks, flying squirrels, minature pigs, axolotls, jellyfish, you get my point.

Same thing here with other Asian countries: been to Thailand/the Philippines and China- almost all fishes are aimed to be sold within the day/week so despite the the overcrowding, most fishes end up sold and exported as well. Some of them get bought wholesale. It's a given that some of them are really expensive species so demand is high for specific traders.

Just know crystal clear water usually comes from sponge filtration and doesn't show much of anything else. Their stocks constantly sell so they don't have to worry about ammonia too much, with a combination of doing heavy water changes. An environment like that wouldn't sustain unless maintenance was at a peak (which it is).

I saw this video when I was at the lowest point in my life. I've kept fish since childhood and had no idea about the TH-cam fish community until I saw this. It was early days of the pandemic, I'd be laid off from a plant nursery position which i studied and worked incredibly hard for,, to get into a small community which was mainly male dominated in far north, Aus.
This video blew my mind, the only thing I've seen in comparison is a general open market in Melbourne, with an amazing pet store across the road, but we have nothing like this in Australia, especially in the far north.
Continued watching your fish farm tours, how to videos, slowly catching up on the old podcasts while keeping updating with the new stuff around my own busy lifestyle.
Thankyou for opening my eyes to the TH-cam side of things, it's taken my 4 tanks I've owned to proudly being an owner of ponds, indoor display tanks, a rack setup for breeding in the carport. Multi-tank-syndrome? Haha. I've been able to combine my love of plants and fish with the base/solid knowledge you've provided. I've learnt so much and I can't wait to continue learning from you! #nerm

For everyone that is concerned about the wellbeing of the fish, it depends.
I live in China, and I visit markets like these to buy fish, hard scape and plants often. I suppose every market is different, and in each market there are different stores which take care of fish in different ways. Some have fish which live bad lives, some live good lives. I have seen stores that have goldfish in filthy tubs or tanks, black ghost knife fish kept in stressful high light conditions, and bettas in cups whose conditions that rival those in Walmart. On the other hand, there are also many fish who live in good, very clean conditions, like those barbs at 1:13. It depends on how each individual store owner/owners treats their fish and what they think about the animal’s rights. This is why we all need to be responsible keepers and buy only from responsible stores, and maybe even tell the “bad” stores what they are doing wrong.
Sick music in the video btw.
