I somehow convinced my dad to watch this film a few weeks ago by just randomly recommending it. He’s in his 70’s so has a very specific old person sense of humour. When I asked him the next day if he enjoyed it he said he had tears streaming down his face as it was “the funniest shit” he’d ever seen in his life.
My dad randomly started watching it on TV one night, and was ecstatic to tell me about it the next day. I humoured him by letting him tell me acting like I didn't know. Now it's one of his favourite films.
It's funny because back in the day when the karate craze was going on back in the 80's after all the martial arts movies started coming out Detroit actually did have some of the best martial artists around. Flint Michigan too can still drive through that ghost town area of Flint and drive by a bunch of shuttered martial arts dojo's. My dad has all kinds of stories about them from back when he was a young man.
I had an older cousin that took as many dates as he could to watch this movie in the theaters while it was out to see if the girl had the same sense of humor as he did. Struck out on every one of them.
It's a bit a sequel to Thunderbirds , puppet series from 1965 - 66 . 32 episodes each 50 min long , they solved slow productions filming on several set at same time .
Aside from the fact that because it was puppets, this was the longest and hardest Trey and Matt had ever worked on a production and caused them more stress than anything else they had ever done. It also nearly cost them their friendship and they swore to never do another project like this ever again.
I saw this in the cinema back in the day. I have never seen a cinema laugh anywhere near as much - people screaming with laughter, tears running down their face, gasping for breath. It was completely contagious.
I actually hated that scene, it might be because I am not into musicals, even if they are actually good like in the south park movie. I wish it wasn't a musical 😅
Matt and Trey have said that filming this was the worst period in their lives if that helps in understanding how difficult it was. There were nearly 300 individual marionettes and around 1000 costumes. The film had to be constantly rewritten to accommodate the limited movement of the marionettes. Since they were all used to a different degree the batteries that controlled the facial movement would die at different times with no warning so that would often ruin takes and they got in it with the MPAA who kept trying to give the film an NC-17 rating. They couldn't even screen the film for review even by the producers because it was still being shot and scored right up till it's release in cinemas so critics were just given a 20 minute sizzle reel of whatever footage they had ready to go. I'm honestly amazed they even wanted to keep doing South Park after that. During the final season of Stargate SG-1 there's a segment in the 200th episode where they use the same company that made the marionettes for Team America and do a comedic recreation of an early scene from the first episode. It's genius. Even for that small segment it took quite awhile to film.
They didn't not want to work with puppets again, they didn't want to make movies of any kind anymore. This is still the last film they've done, nearly 20 years ago now - they have since done several episodic trilogies, musicals, and video games.
Allegedly according to the behind the scenes stuff, when they screened a part of the movie to studio execs they showed the very first part with the shhty ass marionettes and one of them yelled out "THEY FKKED US". Thinking they'd taken the money and wasted it.
Ray Harryhausen used action figures (or dolls if you will) in his work. He'd pose them, take a snapshot, move them one millimeter, take a shot, and so on for days and days until he put it all together into a scene. He was a true innovator. Look at his figures in the different Sinbad movies. The skeleton fight scene, the Cyclops, and the Hydra are just a few samples of his multi-decade work.
Fun fact: Bill Pope was the director of photography of the Matrix trilogy. He agreed to do this movie, to the surprise of Trey and Matt, because he was sick and tired of filming with green screen. This project had zero green screen; everything was in camera. He was thrilled he had the opportunity to film actual real-life stuff for a change.

The Matt Damon joke wasn't in the original story, but when Matt and Trey saw just how derpy the puppet looked they just couldn't resist. Also about the walking, they actually had to get the puppeteers to intentionally make the walking more clumsy.

Germany here: I died in the theater back in the days. Still a classic from my opinion and full of iconic lines! 😆 "Maaatt Daamoon" is still a thing for my friends and me! ^^
It's filmed in Supermarionation. A term coined by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson. who created British T.V. series in the '60's like THUNDERBIRDS, JOE 90, STINGRAY, and FIREBALL XL5 all using these style puppets.
This movie is also an homage to the Gerry Anderson television shows of the late 1960s, such as Captain Scarlett and The Thunderbirds, which main characters were marionettes. I loved both shows as a kid and Team America is one of those movies I watch once a year. It's a total scream.
They even have a character which looks like Brains dressed as Parker shaking Martinis in the party scene. And I always wondered what kind of a freak Lady Penelope would be in the bedroom. We all got to see when this came out, in full colour S U P E R M A R I O N A T I O N!
Fireball XL5 ,Supercar , Stingray , Thunderbirds , Joe 90 & Captain Scarlett . terrific throughout my childhood with their super optimistic vision of the future .All through the seventies , I love this anarchic take on Gerry Anderson and the World of today and very funny .
The British TV shows this is based on were my childhood. You should get yourselves some 'Thunderbirds' 'Captain Scarlet' and 'Stingray' for your youngsters. Joe 90 was also a good un.
@dmt Handmade I do remember those THUNDERBIRDS ARE GO !!😃 this was very much a tribute to those supermarionation classics and yet sooo politically incorrect 😆 this was almost painfully funny ! there was also a DIRE STRAITS video for Calling Elvis that done in the same style by the original creator Gerry Anderson . you check that out keep quality comedy alive Have a good one CHEERS .🙏
Apparently the film-makers were big fans when they were kids but thought it was all a bit silly. They developed huge respect for Gerry Anderson when making this film, frequently wondering how he managed to do some of the things they were attempting to do.There's a fair few subtle references to Anderson stuff scattered through this one.
Check out 21 Century Films on TH-cam. They did a couple new Thunderbird episodes for the 50th anniversary using audio from a vinyl release. They also produce a new show called Nebula-75
-This film is in a three-way tie for first place, in my ranking of the Greatest Comedies Of All Time. (The other two are: Airplane! and Monty Python and the Holy Grail.). An EXCELLENT choice for July 4th! -I have the unrated version. It was interesting to notice a few differences between that version, and the version you watched. There were a couple of points where the audio in the two versions is different. (Unless you intentionally dubbed different music in that section of your reaction). For instance, in the unrated version, during the puppet sex, Gary/Trey Parker sings, “Only A Woman” (worth listening to - it fits the scene better than the more generic music I heard during this screening.). -By the way, Trey and Matt intentionally filmed more graphic, more repulsive acts of puppet sex for the film. I believe this was a deliberate strategy on their part: They could screen the NC-17 version for the MPAA on round one, then remove the most offensive/repulsive puppet sex graphic shots, then go back for a second round with the MPAA, with a big studio (Paramount) behind them, making the case, "Hey - they really did remove the NC-17 stuff from this new cut of the film - so you can recognize that and help us out by giving us the 'R' rating that it should get." (I'm not absolutely sure of this point, but I strongly suspect that this was part of their approach.) -I believe that there’s a cameo of George W. Bush and Laura Bush in the film (the film was released in 2004) - puppets that look like them, appear briefly as part of the audience in Gary’s play, at the beginning. -The closing credits let you hear the full version of “America, Fuck Yeah.” which continues the film’s theme of criticizing things about America that really do deserve criticism: In case you missed it: “…McDonald’s fuck yeah! Wal-Mart fuck yeah! The Gap fuck yeah! Baseball fuck yeah! NFL, fuck yeah! Rock ’n’Roll fuck yeah! The Internet fuck yeah! Slavery fuck yeah! ……” So the song, while also hilarious, criticizes the mindless jingoism and wild ignorance that huge numbers of the American public have about their own country. (Yes, Slavery WAS an important part of America… but why would anyone include that, with an affirming, “Fuck yeah!” with all the other positives of modern American life - unless you were going for the brain-dead view of: “If it is or was present in America, it MUST be good, BECAUSE it was or is part of America!” ) This is one of hundreds of things in the film that go by so fast that you’re likely to miss them, unless you slow down to appreciate them.
Comprehensive info, ta! Saved me time. Also if you haven't seen it the Black Dynamite movie would be a worthy contender for your top five comedy movies.
Sadly ... comedy always makes people forget the serious topic and that they SHOULD DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. Just look at all the people who go to a comedy club ... get criticised for their lifestyle/behaviour ... and then never do anything to change. Personally I dont think "top 3 lists" are a good thing, because people have different moods and thus different styles of comedy are "top" at the moment.
They nail Garofalo! She was all over the news back then and that's EXACTLY what she would do! I was screaming at my TV about it long before this movie came out
George Clooney is actually a South Park fan and he's done voice work for them. You would never recognize him though, since they make him do sounds like dog barks lol.
The music while Gary pukes is so damn epic. I love how it gets loud and intense then chills out while he catches his breath only to get epic again. Pure brilliance👌
A non-stop laughing experience. This is a great movie. Brings back the British TV shows Thunderbird, Captain scarlett , from the 1960's super maranation.

It comes up in this documentary called This Film Is Not Yet Rated, but the cut stuff from the unrated sex scene wasn’t stuff they ever wanted in the movie, they just did it so the MPAA had something to cut they didn’t care about as opposed to cut suggestions of things they did want in.
@@catsandalcohol99 I've listened to a lot of their commentary, they seem to have fewer bad memories about 1999. Probably because they were still riding their first wind, had plenty of ideas, and it was all animation. Come Season 8 in 2004 they seemed to not know what to do with the show and making a movie with marionettes is something that needs your complete devotion.
Right off the bat she asked how hard was it to produce. Apparently the making of this film was excruciatingly hard. Many of the puppeteers were some of the best in the world and knew they wouldnt get an opportunity very often to have a film show off their skill.
This movie is without question the most accurate and true depiction and representation of the US military government and culture 💯✅😂 and I was Lucky enough to see this in theaters when it came out 🤣

Made me remember how much I absolutely loved this movie. I never laughed so hard in the movie theatre ever. Literally almost passed out, especially during the puking scene
there is a behind the scenes or making of on the DVD for this. they talk about the troubles they had filming it, mostly that it looked too good. the puppeteers they hired were really good and some of the movements were just too good, so Matt and Trey had them ugly it up. they also thickened the strings so they were more visible, but then they went and had Kim Jong's glasses specially made, the lenses are made like real eye glasses rather than just plain flat glass. also, Trey wasn't getting what he wanted out of the sex scene so he just grabbed them by hand and just ducked out of the shot and did most of that himself. all of the foreign cities are parodies of themselves, like all the attractions from the Paris scene surrounding the Eifel Tower rather than spread around the city more. and the shacks in North Korea are made from Chinese takeout cartons.

Trivia: Back when the movie was in production Parker & Stone did a joke on the movie executives. They showed the opening scene w the cheesy puppet and crudely drawn background. They were worried until the scene continued and showed the real puppets and scenery. Haha

Saw this in theaters as a 14 year old with a couple friends. Loved the movie but I remember the ushers not letting us back into the theater after we went to get our seats then left to buy snacks in the lobby. My friend's dad (who bought our tickets) was planning on doing some work on his laptop in the Starbucks next door but he ended up having to buy a ticket as well so we could watch the movie.
I first saw this movie when deployed to Kuwait in 2004 or 2005 for Operation Iraqi Freedom II in a US Army base theater. The audience was all soldiers, and the movie was well-received. Thanks for sharing your reactions. It was as if I was watching a new movie because of your viewpoint.

There’s a feature on the disc of the making of this movie. Matt and Trey were miserable and wish they never thought of the puppet idea. It’s a throwback to the Thunderbirds show from way back. There are also interviews with them on talk shows talking about how they’ll never make a puppet movie again 🤣 Happy 4th of July guys!
Seeing movies like this, Beavis and Butt-Head Do America and Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film For Theaters in the movie theater in front of a live audience really hits differently. Where everyone around you is like "I don't know what the HELL i'm watching, but the 40% of us left that didn't walk out in the first 15 minutes are just having the best time" It's like.... if you're in a theater and you're one of the ones who stay around while most of the people are just walking out of the movie, you look around at the people left and you just think "These are my kinda people. They get me."
You need to see the making of documentary. It's brilliant how they made it. They pretty much had to reinvent a dying art. They developed breakthrough software to make the puppets lips synch with the dialogue etc. Really worth the watch. Makes you appreciate the movie that bit more.

This movie has a special place as the last one I saw in theaters with my friend before he passed.
fuck yeah
They actually hired amazing puppeteers for this, Trey and Matt felt pretty bad when they told them to make all of the movements and walking more and more awkward.
Matt Stone and Trey Parker are satirical geniuses.
You really learn a lot about a person from how they react to this movie... 🤣 Happy 4th of July!
Yeah, you find out whether they're a dick, a pussy, or an asshole.

@@Gnossiene369 You missed the point lol
Germany here: I died in the theater back in the days. Still a classic from my opinion and full of iconic lines! 😆
"Maaatt Daamoon" is still a thing for my friends and me! ^^
The off center finger to the lips as foreshadowing was an unexpected and hilarious touch.
The movie craftmanship is really impressive. I had the same reaction watching for the first time, "how did they even do this" aways crossed my mind.
This is my favorite Matt Damon performance.
"It was exactly what I thought it would be"
Claymation? 🤣
'shhhhhhh, it's not claymation"
I spat my beer out 🤣
It's filmed in Supermarionation.
A term coined by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson. who created British T.V. series in the '60's like THUNDERBIRDS, JOE 90, STINGRAY, and FIREBALL XL5 all using these style puppets.
Haven't seen Mrs. Movie smile and laugh this much since Naked Gun! This was fun!
I watched a lot of Thunderbirds in college when the now defunct channel TechTV played it every evening.
Check out 21 Century Films on TH-cam. They did a couple new Thunderbird episodes for the 50th anniversary using audio from a vinyl release. They also produce a new show called Nebula-75
I'm still upset that the fight choreography in this film was snubbed at the Oscars. So underrated.
I believe this was a deliberate strategy on their part: They could screen the NC-17 version for the MPAA on round one, then remove the most offensive/repulsive puppet sex graphic shots, then go back for a second round with the MPAA, with a big studio (Paramount) behind them, making the case, "Hey - they really did remove the NC-17 stuff from this new cut of the film - so you can recognize that and help us out by giving us the 'R' rating that it should get." (I'm not absolutely sure of this point, but I strongly suspect that this was part of their approach.)
-I believe that there’s a cameo of George W. Bush and Laura Bush in the film (the film was released in 2004) - puppets that look like them, appear briefly as part of the audience in Gary’s play, at the beginning.
-The closing credits let you hear the full version of “America, Fuck Yeah.” which continues the film’s theme of criticizing things about America that really do deserve criticism:
In case you missed it:
“…McDonald’s fuck yeah!
Wal-Mart fuck yeah!
The Gap fuck yeah!
Baseball fuck yeah!
NFL, fuck yeah!
Rock ’n’Roll fuck yeah!
The Internet fuck yeah!
Slavery fuck yeah!
……”
So the song, while also hilarious, criticizes the mindless jingoism and wild ignorance that huge numbers of the American public have about their own country. (Yes, Slavery WAS an important part of America… but why would anyone include that, with an affirming, “Fuck yeah!” with all the other positives of modern American life - unless you were going for the brain-dead view of: “If it is or was present in America, it MUST be good, BECAUSE it was or is part of America!” )
This is one of hundreds of things in the film that go by so fast that you’re likely to miss them, unless you slow down to appreciate them.
Comprehensive info, ta! Saved me time. Also if you haven't seen it the Black Dynamite movie would be a worthy contender for your top five comedy movies.
I agree with your top 3
Kung Pow: Enter the Fist is the funniest movie of all time. But, nice try.
Sadly ... comedy always makes people forget the serious topic and that they SHOULD DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. Just look at all the people who go to a comedy club ... get criticised for their lifestyle/behaviour ... and then never do anything to change.
Personally I dont think "top 3 lists" are a good thing, because people have different moods and thus different styles of comedy are "top" at the moment.
Uh, Blazing Saddles?
"Those weren't blanks" is the most underrated part of this whole video.
You had me in tears at the puke scene... thank you... brightened my morning :)
They nail Garofalo!
She was all over the news back then and that's EXACTLY what she would do!
I was screaming at my TV about it long before this movie came out
Lots of parents thought this was for kids when it first came out, Not my Dad tho, he intentionally showed me this knowing fully what it was.
25:26 "That sound. . . Is from Frozen."
She says with the tone of having horrific flashbacks, amd I die laughing.
George Clooney is actually a South Park fan and he's done voice work for them. You would never recognize him though, since they make him do sounds like dog barks lol.
😂 I think the only one you can recognise his voice on is the doctor at the beginning of the South Park movie
Still one of my favourite movies of all time. Rumour has it we're finally getting a sequel.
Absolute hilarious movie. Hadn't seen it in years so was great to watch it again with you guys
I love the part where they are standing in the wreckage that was Paris and they are saying “You’re welcome” Lol.
21:27 - the best “do you have a sense of humor test” out there😂😂😂😂🤦🏻♂️
Going to see this really was an unforgettable thing. You dont always realise at the time that youre going to see something so legendary. Movies like this brinf smile to my face just remembering those days
Trey and Matt are comedic geniuses. Fun to watch this and pick out all the real world items used as props like the basket full of "Goldfish" crackers on a native's head.
My favorite thing in life is to watch someone enjoy something and I don't have anyone to do that with anymore so thank y'all for helping me fill that void with this channel.
Mrs Movies laugh is contagious! 🤣 This movie is so funny! And Mr Movie is right, the unrated version is so hilarious and the sex scene is hilarious.
It comes up in this documentary called This Film Is Not Yet Rated, but the cut stuff from the unrated sex scene wasn’t stuff they ever wanted in the movie, they just did it so the MPAA had something to cut they didn’t care about as opposed to cut suggestions of things they did want in.
2004 was a brutal year for Matt and Trey, because on top of South Park they also had to make a difficult puppet movie.
1999 was absolute hell as well
@@catsandalcohol99 I've listened to a lot of their commentary, they seem to have fewer bad memories about 1999.
And they never did. They were too good so Matt and trey told them to ugly it up
This movie is without question the most accurate and true depiction and representation of the US military government and culture 💯✅😂 and I was Lucky enough to see this in theaters when it came out 🤣
That's like the saying the Mickey Rooney portrayal of an asian guy in Breakfast at Tiffany's is "the most accurate and true depiction of asian culture." Such an absolutely brainless comment.
Culture? Lol
@@boofert.washington2499 ???
That's a stupid comment.
Matt Damon's puppet looks just like the kid from the original Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie.
Holy crap you're right...just like Charlie!
@@MrsMovies And Ben Afleck is his everlasting cockblocker!
The cockroach nod to "Men In Black" classic and definitely cracked a rib for the Film Actors Guild which was 💯 % on point.

You both had me rolling 😂, thanks for another fun reaction and Happy 4th!
I stumbled upon this channel (see algorithm) and what a joy. You two are love and friendship. Cheers!
Thanks Tony! Appreciate the kind words. Glad the algorithm threw you our direction, glad to have you watching with us.
Made me remember how much I absolutely loved this movie. I never laughed so hard in the movie theatre ever. Literally almost passed out, especially during the puking scene
The camera knocking him over on the motorcycle gets me every damn time..
there is a behind the scenes or making of on the DVD for this. they talk about the troubles they had filming it, mostly that it looked too good. the puppeteers they hired were really good and some of the movements were just too good, so Matt and Trey had them ugly it up. they also thickened the strings so they were more visible, but then they went and had Kim Jong's glasses specially made, the lenses are made like real eye glasses rather than just plain flat glass.
also, Trey wasn't getting what he wanted out of the sex scene so he just grabbed them by hand and just ducked out of the shot and did most of that himself.
all of the foreign cities are parodies of themselves, like all the attractions from the Paris scene surrounding the Eifel Tower rather than spread around the city more. and the shacks in North Korea are made from Chinese takeout cartons.
29:04 The crazy thing is, that head shot is far more realistic than any horror movie ever made.
Oh please
@@Gnossiene369 shit!!! if i could post those kind of links here I'd show you stuff you would never forget... and it looks more like this than whatever horror movie you can name.
I literally cried laughing watching this in the theater when it came out
Give Alec Baldwin & Matt Damon full credit. According to them, at least, the only thing they were mad about is that nobody asked them to provide their own voices--they said they'd have been happy to.
Trivia: Back when the movie was in production Parker & Stone did a joke on the movie executives. They showed the opening scene w the cheesy puppet and crudely drawn background.
They were worried until the scene continued and showed the real puppets and scenery.
Haha
Apparently when they saw the french mini puppets at the beginning a producer yelled "sh#t they f*cked us!" Bc they had spent so much money making the movie lol
Tell you what it was great to see the Missus laughing out loud and really enjoying the movie. Many times I think she's only watching because she has to. Great reaction you guys and the genuine laughter was infectious!! Subbed again
Not the movie reaction I was expecting....but the reaction I never knew I needed 😂
"everything is okay everybody, we stopped the terrorists" is still the funniest line in a movie Ive seen
I literally just got out of watching Thor: Love and Thunder and when Matt came on screen I said “Matt Daaamon.”
"Matt Daaamon"😂😂 I still do the same thing every time I hear his name also.
The puking scene reaction was hilarious :)
One of the greatest if not greatest movie ever made! The choreography of the action scenes is next to none!
3:45 was one of the funniest things I'd ever seen. The whole theater was laughing so hard at it.
I'd forgotten how funny this movie was.
17:12 Puppet Sex !
23:03 I've been that sick before :D
She laughs the most at the walking lol
There’s a feature on the disc of the making of this movie. Matt and Trey were miserable and wish they never thought of the puppet idea. It’s a throwback to the Thunderbirds show from way back. There are also interviews with them on talk shows talking about how they’ll never make a puppet movie again 🤣 Happy 4th of July guys!
You two are the perfect example of the fact that you don't have to crack nuts to enjoy them. Greetings from Belgium.
I haven’t laughed so hard at a reaction ever. I was in tears. God bless you guys
Seeing movies like this, Beavis and Butt-Head Do America and Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film For Theaters in the movie theater in front of a live audience really hits differently. Where everyone around you is like "I don't know what the HELL i'm watching, but the 40% of us left that didn't walk out in the first 15 minutes are just having the best time"
It's like.... if you're in a theater and you're one of the ones who stay around while most of the people are just walking out of the movie, you look around at the people left and you just think "These are my kinda people. They get me."
You need to see the making of documentary. It's brilliant how they made it. They pretty much had to reinvent a dying art. They developed breakthrough software to make the puppets lips synch with the dialogue etc. Really worth the watch. Makes you appreciate the movie that bit more.
So amazing that Trey Parker and Matt Stone made this action-comedy film in the style of Gerry Anderson's supermarionette puppetry, despite them never being into those old shows of his.
When the movie came out, I bought the unrated version, not realizing there was a difference. Oops. Mom was never the same again.
i watched this masterpiece when i was like 5 with my grandma and didn’t understand how funny it was
I'm so glad that you guys showed the we're going to take their lives and our own... We're.... We're gonna what... Line
For such a basic ass line, that was my legit favorite line of the movie. I don't know why it was so fucking funny to me. Just the delivery and how basic it was was hysterical
