I have an idea for your landscape fabric. If you end up taking it out of the beds for the winter to keep it out of the elements, make a tag of what you planted in the fabric and staple it to the end of the fabric. When you go to plant next year you don’t have to try and figure out what you planted in it last year. That way the size of the holes correspond with what you want to
    Plant in them.

I germinate most of my seeds in a wet paper towel in a plastic container. Once they sprout, i put them in red solo cups with soil. Then when they are ready to plant outside, they go into larger pots/ containers outside. The garden is looking awesome.

Just a question because it's only my second year gardening. I had really poor germination rates with my beans this year. I just sow them into the ground. Would you also germinate them first on a wet paper towel?

    • @debbiepaquin8842
      @debbiepaquin8842 ปีที่แล้ว +9

@@sarahr.1076 beans like alot of moisture but while germinating in the ground if its to cool and to wet the seeds will mold and rot.
If we're supposed to get rain I just plant in a furrow and water before I cover. If its to be dry for days or a week I don't water unless I'm going to water until the rain comes.
Some like to soak seeds before planting and others don't

Make into a powder for storing…..comes winter you can have the taste of fresh cukes in whatever….I do all my extra greens, squashes, pumpkin etc etc….I did petite tomato pieces and when dried it made a yummy salad topping and mixed in Mayo made a great add to my husbands Sammie and hamburger topping.

One suggestion. When planting big areas of stuff like your corn, set seeds on surface and don't cover them until all seeds are spaced out. Then, if you have to respace them, you can just move the seed around. When covering or pushing into dirt, it goes very quickly. Great blessings everyone.

NO germination from my cucumbers, which is weird, as they are brand new seeds. So yesterday, I set the rest of my beans, some cucs and some cilantro to soak, and I will plant today. I am hopeful for increased success!! Love watching your garden grow! BTW... I have tried and tried to get a good corn stand in a raised bed.. and ended up with nice plants.. and TEENY tiny little corn cobs.. He places some sort of poles around the edges of his raised beds, to attach the panels to, so they’re sturdy enough to support all that corn. It works!

Hi Becky , I am 64 years old and have a couple of things for you. when planting corn my gramps taught us 3 seeds per hole and of course it was in the field so it was about a foot apart. That being said i do mine in a raised bed and I do 2 seeds per hole and about 8 inches apart and it seems to do well for me . Now as far as the cloth I am on year 3 of mine and it is as good as the day we put it down. We did have some fraying this year due to a big storm but we just reburned it and it's fine. Make sure you use plenty of staples we put ours about 2 foot apart and we found that with the wind and such it has helped tons. for your melons you will need what I call a melon bra so be thinking what you want to make and or use for that. my gramps literally used grams old bras to hold the melons. that being said there are many things you can make and or use.

I think the tool you showed was a hori hori knife--not sure about the spelling. Also, I planted corn in a raised bed as close as yours and it had almost 100% germination and grew like crazy. I didn't get it planted until July 1 and it was taller than my husband in six weeks. I thought the stalks were actually holding each other up. Oh, the variety was Silver Queen.

Good luck with your corn. I have planted it for the joy of gardening but corn farmers in our area sell it for about the same price as I can raise it. Don't feel bad about buying fresh corn. I am glad you have those beds at walking level on one side so you won't have to climb into the raised beds to harvest the corn.

I am so excited to see your garden coming together! My husband has been helping me expand our raised bed gardens, and we put in 2 lower framed in ground areas for corn, beans, and peas with trellis for the pea/bean bed. I have everything but the corn, beans, peas, and melons planted and hoping to get them in tomorrow! Plus we have a wine crisp apple tree, a hosui pear, and a fignominal dwarf tree we are adding this year! Then, we plan on adding a whole bunch of raised beds to the front yard for a pollinator/herb garden that will hopefully be finished before next year's planting season. Your channel has been such an inspiration and motivation for me to get mine done and ive finally stepped out of my comfort zone and am trying new things to grow in the garden for canning and sharing with friends and family. Thank you for sharing all you do with us. It is truly a blessing to be able to watch and be inspired by you 💜

I’m not sure if anyone has recommended this to you but you might want to consider getting a yard wagon to move your plants, soil products, harvest etc around. It was a game changer for me! So many less steps and no need carry items. The large wheels make it easy to pull on uneven ground, over lawn, gravel etc

I noticed you have cement blocks in the raised area that the previous owner put in. Consider planting flowers inside those blocks to promote pollination and prevent pests. A good first choice would be heirloom marigold…plus you can save the seeds to plant next year.

My daughter and i just planted out our pumpkin seeds we already germinated. Then we did some parsley, sunflowers and cat grass for the kitties. Next is another round of sugar peas, so we have some come on later than the ones we have coming up now. Cant wait...had to take a break from this heat quick. But heading back out in a few.

I have grown corn in a small plastic kiddie pool and I did get small ears of corn but they were good. I would suggest putting a t-post in each corner of your bed and when the stalks get taller start tying twine from post to post to help keep stalks from blowing over and breaking. Then as they grow more add higher strings of twine

I watched your video yesterday, I wanted to assure you corn grows great in raised beds. I raised corn last year in a 4ft. X 8ft bed . I was able to have corn on the cob plus corn to freeze. You’ll do great. Since the silks need wind for germination I would shake the stalks a bit and noticed birds flitting around among the silks. They were also helping pollinate. 😊

Agreed. I haven't watched many of her recent videos because I can't tell from the title/thumbnail what subject they are on. I think she's attempting to do clickbait style titles (which the algorithm favors), but they don't work when you have no idea what the subject is.

Yep you can totally grow corn in raised beds - no problem. Just as long as the bed is big enough. I've grown them in a 4x4 bed. Corn can even be grown in grow bags - you just need to plant a bunch of bags and put them in a block or a circle.

Hi Becky, for the past 3 years I've been growing corn. My biggest struggle is the wind and looking at your open garden, I'm guessing this will be a problem for you too. This year we made a barrier to prevent them from falling and breaking. It's made so the light can pass but solid enough to keep the corn up. Just wanted to tell you so you can maybe think about it. Ps you are my inspiration!! Love your channel

Hi Becky, Your garden is already looking so gorgeous!
My first start of Zinnia's is doing great. The second one is horrible. And I did the same thing: I start them in a mini green house in individual soil pots.
This year, I've also started Tanacetum, and they are doing so well.
Becky, think you need a wheelbarrow to get all your plants and later on your harvest from your garden to your home. So you don't have to walk numerous times up and down with everything.
I hope you have a wonderful weekend filled with joy, happiness, and of course; gardening!
Big hug from the Netherlands. ❤
