  • In my podcast about Yasuke, I detailed why a sword page like him was not used on the battlefield, only when things were safe. That led to a question about who was responsible for the lord's protection. The answer is the hatamoto, of which only William Adams and Jan Joosten are known to be non-Japanese members. Adams was what the character Blackthorne was based on, if only loosely.

As Shogun the series has had attention recently, what happened to Williams Adams and his family?
Did his family retain their status in Japanese society?
His children would have had a hard time being half Japanese and half English.

Honestly, I don't know what happened to him and his family. Never felt the urge to look that deeply. Sorry.

His son Joseph and daughter Susanna both had samurai status and received stipends but I haven't found any other info on them
