Such a cool game, replicating the terms and feeling of chess with basically none of the same mechanics!
I picked up chess last year. As White, I like to play the Stonewall and the Ponziani; as Black, I like to play the Caro Kann and the Scandinavian -- all four opening are putting pawns toward the center.

Another fabulous design by Paolo Mori! His two-player series are so much fun and so concise! Blitzkrieg, Caesar, Dogfight and now Match of the Century. Such great designs. Thank you for showcasing this one!

      He did not design Dogfight

Great play through, it was fun watching you guys go through each round. Just got this game and you guys are much faster than me at deciding what card to play, there's so much to think about from the card effects that you want to use or save for later, whether you want to win or lose an exchange in order to influence who takes initiative for the remaining unresolved areas. Very engaging 2p game.

Watergate is one of my favourite games of all time so I've been waiting to find out more about this "spiritual sequel". Thanks.

I'm old enough to remember this match. It was real news, US vs USSR during the cold war. Looks like a fun game.

At around 37:45, when did Monique gain the ability to place pawns again? Was that the 'losing' ability of the 1 white 4 black point card? Great game with a unique thematic. Would love to see expansions based around different classic chess matches.

Watergate had a baby with Battle Line. Looks fairly abstract, like both of those, but engaging.
I usually start with 1. d4 as white, and as black I often start 1. … e6 or 1. … d5, depending on what white does. In other words, I move one of the center pawns forward for my opening move.

Real fun video cool looking game
(FYI Monique at 40min you should have actually had another pawn you forgot to take your pawn income that round you could have tied it)

this was great, thanks! I only wish the cards were worded as "your opponent" just to future-proof any potential expansions to play as other chessmasters

    • @bearhustler
      @bearhustler ปีที่แล้ว +2

I can't imagine expansions, this feels like a one and done like Watergate. Also it's not about chess but one particular game of chess.

38:30 Monique should have gained a pawn.

Great video! I think you both put too much emphasis on the value of the cards because the abilities are really strong. For example at 23:55 when Monique opened with value of 6, this is just a golden oppotunity for Naveen to activate a really strong ability. Playing a pawn there is not ideal. Also don't underestimate the power of resigning a game with the king, getting +3 mental endurance can be huge ;)

I wonder if anyone knows where to buy this game within the EU. In English. I found it in Germany but that was a German version.
Great video BTW. Initially, I said to myself that the game wasn't for me but after watching the whole game I felt that it looked really fun. :)

Seems like tanking hard early is probably a good strat for this game.

I play a rush game in chess. My opening moves are always to move my knights forcing my opening to reciprocate on theirs. So I set the pace.
