Grandfather was a Medal of Honor recipient, Marine Corps during WW2. I did not discover this fact until I was 11 years old, reading a book on WW2 in the school library. Grandfathers name is very unique so when I read it my heart stopped mouth got dry then I had a tiny moment of doubt “surely I would have heard about this in the family!?”. I checked out the book and brought it home to my father, also a Marine Officer, cracked it open and read the passage to him like I just solved a huge mystery. Dad was very cool about it and just left breadcrumbs, “if you read other books, you will find out more” and left it there. So I took up the challenge I read more, low and behold Grandfather was in A LOT of books about the war with Japan. Thankfully Grandfather was still alive at the time and I could ask direct questions, he told me about his service during the war but admonished me “the fact I was awarded this honor, will never be bragged about, you will never bring it up to anyone outside the family while I am alive”. I understood it but man did I keep reading and studying.
The entire family didn't learn until after his death that my grandfather was a Marine Raider in the 4th Battalion. It was only after the Raider association listed his obituary that we figured it out. Family lore is that he walked from California back to New Jersey when he was discharged. Took him over a year to get back. He was on Okinawa, the Philippines, Guam etc.

Title is misleading. You'll remember Kyle Carpenter as well. he is a living MOH recipient. there are quite a few of them. This man is the first living Delta Operator to get it.

I think it’s first recorded evidence of the recipient.
Carpenters actions weren’t recorded.
No the first one recorded was an air force jtac in Afghanistan in 2002 at Robert's Ridge.
My wife’s cousin Sal Giunta was the first living recipient since Vietnam he received his serving in Afghanistan in 2007. Yes there were several after. God bless them all.

There are currently 65 living recipients of the Medal of Honor, the US military's highest decoration. Of the living recipients, one was awarded in the Korean War, 48 in the Vietnam War, 14 in the War in Afghanistan, and two in the War in Iraq.
Amazing what these men do. And much of what they do we will never hear of. Thomas Payne, what a name for an American hero.
First living Delta Force member to receive it. He's not the first living recipient.
There's an official video that Payne narrated himself that describes all what went on during that operation.
Also, if you're interested, the movie "Black Hawk Down" shows the actions of Delta snipers Shugart and Gordon that earned them the Medal of Honor. Excellent movie.
You should do a movie revue about the most decorated American soldier in WW2. He received every medal including the medal of honor ( at age 19 ) , plus medals from France and Belgium. Audie Murphy. The movie is "To Hell and Back" (1955) He played himself in the movie. How bad a** is that.
The Medal of Honor is for all In military service that have shown great courage in the face of impossible odds. While most are dead a few survived. A machine gun team got it during the Saipan campaign when a enemy grenade blinded the gunner and destroyed the hands of the spotter yet they still fought on despite being completely outmatched. They fought the entire night and survived and were evaced in the morning. They both received the Medal of Honor for their heroism and defending their fellow soldiers who were injured or dead.
The captain who fought single handedly against the Japanese on tarawa who earned the medal for taking down entire squads of Japanese soldiers when he was the only one left. He fought all night and emerged from the forest beaten and bloody but alive and asking for food after returning to friendly ground. This is why we fight so others don’t have to.
My wife’s cousin Salvatore Giunta was actually the first living Medal of Honor recipient since the Vietnam conflict. He received his while serving in Afghanistan 2007. There is a book written about him and you can google him to hear his story. Every MOH recipient deserves all the respects and honors they get. God bless them all.
Title is misleading guys. Although it’s true most who are are heroic enough to earn the MoH do so posthumously, some do live on. I know it’s not your title, just be aware. They really could have titled it more clearly to make it obvious they are only talking about the first living Delta recipient.
Just off the top of my head I can think of Captain James Burt, an armor officer who earned his for his actions at the Battle of Aachen. He lived a full life until 2006.

There are /were numerous Military Members who recieved the Medal of Honor while STILL, ALIVE
I am super Patriotic and have huge respect for those that have the Medal.

I Remember the Living Soldier That Died like 3 times in vietnam or something (a Native American..) .

The Medal of Honor is a military award, not just an Army award. There were Medal’s of Honor awarded to Navy Seals, Air Force elite combat troops, as in the first MOH ever recorded on video. It’s an American military award, not exclusively an Army award.

for anyone in the comments the title is referring to fact that Thomas is the first living Delta Force member to recieve the medal, as the video says the first 2 were given to Randy Shugart and Gary Gordon for what they did during mogadishu. "Black Hawk Down" depicts their actions
This definitely isn’t the first living recipient lol hell in 1900 Dan Daly recieved 2 medals of homer before almost getting a 3rd in WW1
There are many Medal of Honor recipients who were alive when they received our nation's highest award. You don't have to die to be eligible for one, you just have to be officially recognized for an act of "uncommon valor" during battle. There are many soldiers who exhibited these acts of valor but not all of these acts were observed or reported to superiors. Peace.🕊
I think they were saying that he was the only person on Delta Force that got one while alive. I was confused at first about that 😅
@@Trenchcoat3 Actually, he is currently the "youngest living Medal of Honor" recipient to have ever received the award, but what a convoluted way to make a distinction, as if there are age categories/restrictions for "uncommon valor". Also, I know his story and I've never heard of him being a member of the elite "Delta Force".😉
The best part to this for me is they don’t acknowledge him in delta they said he was in 3rd ranger battalion still trying to keep the secrecy of the unit but we all know they exist

Delta Force is the Army's equivalent to the Navy Seals. Both are Special Forces and you don't want to mess with either.
Delta recruits from the SEALs. Delta is more or less more like DEVGRU (aka seal team six) but only one person has ever moved form DEVGRU to Delta.
@@glad777 yes, a DEVGRU member has moved to Delta but there’s never been a Delta member that’s moved to DEVGRU. It’s looked at like a demotion within JSOC. It’s also difficult considering you’ve gotta leave the Army and then join the Navy and start the BUD/S pipeline and there’s still no guarantee.
@@georgefloydsinhellwbreonna5330 I know I am a writer/researcher/editor for science fiction novels. I had to research the special ops community for a novel. That is where I heard about the guy going form DEVGRU to Delta.
You guys should find a video about Delta Force. They are modeled after the British SAS.

This is Delta only reason this video even is a thing is that they wanted it to be.. Delta or CAG (Command Advisory Group) is the most secretive military unit in the US
