@@Megan.Reeves I used iPad Pro as it is with iPadOS. It was ok for the most part. I had a work laptop that I could use for rare occasions but I used the iPad Pro 99% of the time.
I completely transitioned from MBP and Mac Pro to my M1 iPad Pro after 20+ of using desktop. As professional Audio Engineer and Media company Founder/Director, I was able to do ALL my professional work for all my clients (big and small) on my iPad and I haven’t looked back, without any compromise in quality. None of my clients could tell the difference. It’s definitely changed my life and how I work day-to-day.

Audio I can see working out on the iPad since the files are small. But what about video editing big projects like documentaries? Thx in advance! I’d love to hear your thoughts!
My laptop gave way about 1 month after I purchased my iPad 11 M2 pro. While taking my time to decide, I gradually started doing everything on the iPad. Some things are easier than others but with Logitech Slim Folio Pro, a multi-connection hub, external SSD and other peripherals, I don’t miss the laptop at all. It’s been 8 months.
i'm a video game artist, & i use my iPad Pro as my main "computer" too. I use it for work, & it's simply the device that i carry with myself everywhere i go, next to my phone. I do my work & personal things 95% there. I do own a powerful gaming laptop too that i leave at home & only turn on for gaming purpose.
I think multitasking on the iPad is fantastic, for me it's the best. It's the most modern operating system I know. It does not load the legacy that MacOS carries. It's light and powerful.
I use my iPad Pro (12.9 M1) for 95% of my daily use. I’m a writer and painter, mostly. But there are a few apps that I need my MacBook Pro for: database development and web development. Neither app is available for iPad. As soon as those projects end, it will be ipad all the way. Thanks for the great iPad coverage through the years-I’ve been following you (silently) since long before 9to5. Looking forward to your future videos.
@@anthonyanthony2783 I’ll have to agree with Rory on this one. In English, while yes, prepositional phrases often have a determiner such as “the” or “a/an” before a noun, brand names or product names often do not require “the” before then. For example, “Available on iPhone” or “Compatible with Windows 10”.
I got my 2018 iPad Pro back in May 2019, just before I started college. At first I used it a lot as my main computer, and I enjoyed it a lot. However, as my needs for a computer changed to become more demanding, the limitations of iPadOS began to bother me. To make things worse for the iPad Pro, the iPhone and Mac improved quite a lot over the past four years in both hardware and software. As a result, I use my iPad less and less, especially after going into content creation and graduated college. Overall, the iPad Pro for me is a great device. But it just hasn't improved fast enough for me to keep up with my changing demands for a computer while the Mac and iPhone did. I still have my iPad Pro, but only for when I need to occasionally doodle something which is rather rare because I'm not much of a drawer, even though it is something I'd like to learn.
I’ve had my 2018 iPad Pro since July 2020. It won’t replace my laptop because I use it for travel, FaceTime, taking notes, signing and filling in documents, checking emails, watching movies and TH-cam, reading books and comic books, and some light gaming. It’s perfect for travelling since it’s lightweight. I use my M1 MBP for the heavy lifting.
I started out with an 2013 MacBook Pro and I loved it. Still have it. But with my hobbies, interest and work flow, I didn’t need another MacBook Pro but also the one i have was too old and clunky to use, so i went with an 11 inch m2 iPad. I loveeeeee it. No regrets. From TH-cam, to taking notes, to surfing the web and even a little gaming it runs so smoothly it’s crazy. I sometimes wonder how such a powerful computer is really just a tablet. I think i will eventually get a MacBook Air if my workflow changes a bit but im super happy with this purchase right now .
As someone (student) with both, I prefer using the ipad pro for the display and 120hz, lightness, comfort, but sometimes I gotta go with m2 mb air 1. Battery on mb air is better and My pro Usually dies before the end of the day (so I usually use it more for handwritten notes and less as a computer) 2. The ipad can be.. finnicky? Google docs screen can glitch out, the buttons can be unresponsive. MS office is even worse. Sometimes mouse inputs wont work as intended and you need to use the touchscreen (excel) which can be annoying 3. Gaming, I love me some emulators and its a lot easier on mac
I think it’s come a long way. My biggest issues right now are when working on web apps on Safari. For example copy pasting is a pain, the text input box some times goes under keyboard settings widget, the auto correct doesn’t work on web apps. But when in the apple notes app or even MS word app these work fine, the mouse cursor changes shape when you want to highlight text for copy paste and the rest work very well.
Hi can I ask for advise? I have been using excel format for my invoice using my windows based laptop. I can’t find the best way without paying for more subscriptions… I am so fed up using my laptop turning them on restart etc just to make an invoice to client.
I bought an M1 iPad Pro back when they came out. Got the Apple Pencil and a folio case to go with it. I'm in my 40s and thought about how much I missed drawing back in my school days. Ended up getting Procreate and a few other apps, but honestly, I'm too overwhelmed to dive into them. So many brush options. I used to be a pencil and paper drawer. Jumping into the digital art world is very intimidating, but I still want to do it. Just having a hard time actually trying to do it. So instead, I use my iPad as a big iPhone, basically. I much rather watch videos on it, rather than my phone, if not my 2014 MacBook Pro, which I should have replaced instead of buying the iPad. The MacBook though is for my work. Lots of spreadsheets, Slack, Zoom, and websites. Thought about trying to use the iPad for work instead of the MacBook, but I multitask so much with the MacBook + a 2nd display, I don't think I could make the iPad my go-to for work.
As an IT Exec at a major global company, I personally made the switch to an iPad Pro M1 11” with the Brydge Keyboard then switched to an Apple Magic Keyboard. Day 1 - iOS 16 w/ stage manager made the switch possible. Don’t think I could’ve done it using normal app switching. 400 days later, I’m on iOS 17 and using Azure Remote Desktop for a few apps (ie Excel Pivots, Data manipulation options, etc. ). I’m using a wide angle Dell monitor with native USB-C and USB-A charging. Once the remote Logitech camera is supported, it’ll be a professional laptop replacement game changer. Would be nice if the computer continued to run whilst closed. I’ll never go back to 100% PC - in fact, I’m working on moving our company to mixed iPad / thin client VDI mode to have the greatest agility. Big thanks to this channel for helping convince me to make the switch - it’s been an amazing experience that has made my worklife beyond productive.
@@mrlang125 i also added a really good ipad to my main laptop, and it is a mega game changer.. but i could not go 100% desktop free or 100% laptop free i have tried both, and now i have both desktop, laptop, ipad, iphone, and would never go back to being a cave man. they are all staples in the IT man arsenal!
@user-dt6pk3zp9m ahh thank! Yes for sure I dont think I can fully just do ipad alone I'm a tech whore. I already have a macbook pro, lenovo laptop, pc, and two phones 😂. But they're all workhorses I want something I can take on the go or on the bed.
🐬 I had yo resort to only using my iPad Air for work when my MacBook was broken, and I can honestly say that it was challenging at first but you adapt quite fast and it ended up being a great experience getting everything that you would normally do on your Mac now having to do it on your iPad. I would easily go and do it again especially with Final Cut Pro on iPad. Makes life so much easier.
I use my M2 Pro as an art tool and a supplemental device for my M1 Air; I am in graduate school for education and do a lot of multi-tasking, and I will take just the iPad with me if I'm traveling, working outside of my house, or working in a school. I also do digital art on it, so for me it is the perfect device. I also consume content and whatnot on it like everyone else.
@@DarenLee If you are in the Apple ecosystem you wouldn’t use any Microsoft products… you would use the free native Apple app “Pages”, which is the exact same thing as word. They also have “Keynote” which is the exact same thing as PowerPoint. And “Numbers” which is the exact same as spreadsheets. 👍 all native apps free on apple that work directly with the native files app on system and iCloud.
I couldn't agree with you more. I went to the iPad Pro 12.9 in late 2021 and it is my primary. All OEM accessories inc. pen and keyboard. I never used anything as fast and powerful. Good overview.
The fact that the 12.9" base line, with the Magic Keyboard and the Apple Pencil, is short of 2100 in Italy means it absolutely makes ZERO sense whatsoever buying one if you are not loaded or an artist. I own an 11" M1 Pro with those two accessories and it is a beauty, but it's not a computer and it will never be, it's just too small. The 12.9", on the other hand, could replace a laptop if it were, say, 500 euros cheaper (more like the US price). I don't regret buying the iPad, nor the Pencil, but I do regret investing in the Magic Keyboard and trying to use the iPad as my sole device. I ended up buying and M1 air a few months later and I'm getting a MacBook Pro at the end of this year. Btw, the fun fact is I'm a damn student, I'm literally the target for that device, and it is absolutely insane how inaccessible it is. For 2k I can get a MacBook Pro refurbished or just upgrade to a new one for a little bit of money, like 15% increase in price. That price tag is okay in the US because you have an education system built around debt, so you can easily invest that kind of money if you are confident enough you will be able to pay back you tuition (I think is't called, not sure tho). In EU you either come from a rich family or you just can't afford an iPad Pro. I had two jobs for a year to be able to buy myself the 11" and the full combo was like 1.5k. Let's be real, iPads are only good for students (and a very small group of grown-ups that don't even make a market altogether) and students can't afford them... recommending an iPad Pro 12.9" is cool, I mean if I had one I'd be mad in love with it, but you have to be realistic guys... it's one of the worst value for money there is in the tech world by a mile, or at least it is outside the cozy bubble Apple keeps alive around the US.
Have watched a lot of your "iPad Pro as laptop replacement" videos (and many others), and I have tried hard, really hard to get any normal workflow on the iPad as my main driver. But I can only see this work if you are a student or a person that doesn't need a laptop for normal web-based content management systems or workflows that uses docs and files for which you need "preview" by pressing the spacebar on the mac. Content creators who write scripts, edit photos and videos and use the device as a media consumption device can supposedly get everything done on an iPad. But, even though I am by no means a serious heavy user who needs coding or working with heavy spreadsheets, I work mainly on websites that I own from a management POV, so I rely fully on a web browser where I have generally 20+ tabs open (chrome on the mac), email with 10+ email accounts and allot of meeting apps such as Whatsapp, Zoom, Slack etc (Whatsapp sucks in the web browser). The main thing I don't understand is how people are using the iPad even with only the limited web browser capabilities. Chrome on the iPad totally sucks, it's way slower than on a macbook and doesn't support 50% of the features but also Safari doesn't load the admin portals that I need to work in. All in all, I wish Apple made the iPad run a version of MacOSx because until then it will still be only a light media consumption device.
Like you said, the hardware is just perfect. My iPad Pro 12” M2 1TB SSD is doing great. But… iPadOS is just so limiting. As a developer, I really, really, would love to use my iPad as my main computer. But Apple makes it so hard to love this device. The reason for purchasing my iPad Pro M2 was it to be my main computer. But until this day after a year and a lot of retries to like it again, I would not buy it again. I would go for a Macbook. I mostly use my iPad Pro to watch video’s, my email and writing documents by hand or by keyboard. But at the price I paid for this device and Apple keeps limiting it via iPadOS, it is too much and too high. And the price, for the Magic Keyboard which is a great piece of hardware but with _no_ function keys, is also completely insane. Period. For that price alone I bought a Logitech MX Keys Mini, a Magic Trackpad and a solid metal magnetic stand.
I'll think about buying the iPad the day Apple allows installation of 3rd Party Softwares in it ‼ Without it it's just a limited restricted form of potentially powerful hardware ‼ It has a very powerful and capable Hardware that could have been an awesome touch screen and pencil compatibile 2-in-1 MacBook! Or "MacPad" ‼ I really miss Steve Jobs, he would have fixed this dilemma for Apple, the way Apple got rid of iPod as iPhone become capable of being an iPod and much more by itself ‼
Unfortunately that is the key. Yeah your big name apps will have iPadOS apps, but a lot of "creatives" will need access to apps that aren't available on the iPad. I actually decided to just get my wife the Asus ROG Flow Z13 even though she is all about Mac and Apple. First of all you can get the 2022 version for $1199, second of all you can install any application you want. After seeing that the new iPad Pro uses the M2 I even asked my wife if she wanted one for a "mobile computer", unfortunately I saw it still used a stupid OS, so it was a no go.
I agree, if you only have one computing device the Mac Book Air is the better option. I have a maxed out 2012 i7 Mac Mini and use a 12.9 M2 iPad Pro as my “Laptop”. I love it, very versatile and very powerful and still have a cheap Mac solution for when I need to do a little more.
Been using my ipad pro 2018 as my ONLY computer (replaced my macbook pro with it and took a leap of faith). I am primarily an artist and a writer, and it can accomplish most tasks for me. I am currently in the market for a macbook pro, however. I love my ipad pro, and think that it’s a capable laptop replacement for SOME people, myself included. The biggest issue with the ipad is that, while it can do most things, it can’t do EVERYTHING, and I would still like to have access to a more robust file management system, full service software, and the versatility of a laptop. For most of my primary use cases, I’ll still use my ipad pro for most of my workflow, and will eventually upgrade it (the 2018 is still plenty capable) but I just feel that having a proper laptop to act as an anchor still brings a lot of value.
I’ve tried to use my iPad Air 4 as my main computer but couldn’t. What put it in for me was scrivener being limited and buggy, the iPad’s storage options. Also no apps came close to adobe audition and sucky apps for 3d animation. I switched to my custom build pc. Only use my iPad for drawing.
My first computer was a four-color CGA 8088 PC. it didn't have 1% of power or capacity of my M2 iPad Pro 12.9". I am amazed at how far we've come and can't imagine complaining about any of the features (or lack thereof) that modern computers have. We live in an amazing time.
I switched my iPad Pro for a Galaxy S9 Ultra and haven't looked back as of yet. Having a larger OLED screen, the camera being in the right place for video conference calls and Samsung Dex mode have completely resolved all the issues I used to have with the iPad Pro. The iPad is still a great device, just didn't work for my use case. I will say that the App Store is definitely superior to the Google Play store and with app optimization though. Great vid!
Have an Alienware X-15 laptop for gaming. A Dell i5 laptop for journalism. A 13 Pro Max for photos/video. But my fav device (prob 55%-60% of all digital use) is my 5th Gen M1 IPad Pro 12.9 w/Smart Keyboard.
I have the M1 11inch Pro and absolutely love it. I use it as my main machine when paired to the Magic Keyboard. Find it powerful and portable. Having the cellular version allows me to use it out and about in coffee shops etc. Use my MacBook only at home, mainly for video rendering. Find the IPad and Magic Keyboard compact and portable and easy to fit into bag. Find Stage manager useful and the machine powerful.
I'm using an 2021 iPad Pro 12.9 as my main productive device as engineering student and it's just perfect for me because it's able to do roughly everything a MacBook Air can do, with the versatility of a tablet (with the Apple Pencil). I can't recommand something else for a scientific student
I finally upgraded my 2nd gen 12.9 iPad Pro to the M2 12.9 inch pro with 1 TB of storage. I get that most of the commentary is for people that like the idea of the device replacing their laptop but the killer app is Procreate! I can’t draw on a MacBook Air directly on the screen no matter the configuration! Since that’s my main use case, when I have to answer emails, edit photos or videos it’s just more convenient to do it on the device that I spend the most time on. Love your stuff!🔥💪🏽👍🏾
I absolutely love my iPad. Mine is a 2021 11” iPad Pro with the magic keyboard and the apple pencil 2. I had a 2016 11” MacBook Air before, and for the last 2 and half years Ive been using the iPad daily for work. I am a private English teacher and I teach both in person and remotely. I am also a photographer and I simply love editing photos with the iPad. Recently I bought a 15” MacBook Air, but I still prefer the iPad. I want to upgrade to a 12.9” with 1Tb of storage, and I hope the next generation comes with an OLED screen!
Have been a iPad Pro+Magic Keyboard+Pencil user, since 2020. Trust me, I sold my laptop off after experiencing the iPad setup. You want to type, reply to emails? Do that with the Magic Keyboard. You want to sign documents? Apple Pencil is the answer. I have never thought that this little setup of mine would be so beneficial to me that I will completely ditch my MacBook. Can’t be more satisfied with the versatility this bring to the table.
I have not used an iPad since 2014. I stopped using it because it was to cumbersome to try and have it as my daily driver. Now that ten years has passed and the os has changed a lot since I last used it I am looking forward to getting my iPad delivered to me this week to make the transition to having a iPad as a main computer. I went through cheap route of the iPad 10th gen to ease into it. I have a M1 MBA as my main computer for photo editing so we will see how it goes.
I still feel like the 12.9 model isn’t really a device you hold while using. I had a 2018 12.9 12z and never got comfortable with the size for a portable device. Fast forward to today I have an 11 inch iPad Pro with 2 TB storage and 16 gigs of ram and I think it’s the perfect size. I can hold it with one hand easily without fatigue and it also works well with the keyboard. The only things I want changed is the position of the camera, and to get an OLED screen as I prefer that to even mini LED on the 12.9.
Just got my very first iPad Pro today really excited to utilize it to its full potential, I do work in IT in a healthcare setting we regularly use iPads but looking forward to use for IT infrastructure
Im sure youve heard this before or similar but I think if the iPad functioned as just that in “tablet mode” and then when connected to the magic keyboard it turned more into a MacOS experience as in a full blown file system, having a REAL desktop and the option to download real full blown computer programs. Something kinda like Samsungs DexOS on their phones/tablets. IDK man to mean its a no brainer because this then can truly replace the laptop for most people.
I very much prefer the iPad Pro for day to day use not only for the fluidity of the tablet but also the touch screen operating system. The combination of the SIM card for internet access and phone, near computer capability, the touch screen and the iPadOS App Store is worth the premium price of the Ipad vs a MacBook. I choose to use less expensive peripherals rather than apple products and find them adequate without the extra expense. The ability to use cellular data anywhere I go instead of depending on Wi-Fi is a huge advantage as well. I use T Mobile Digits which also allows me to use the tablet to receive and send calls and texts seamlessly (even to people who don’t have iPhones). My iPad is a combination 12.9” computer/iPhone. I use a messenger bag and heavy duty case with a handle to carry the tablet everywhere I go. As an older person with less than perfect eyesight the tablet is used 95% of the time the phone 4% and a computer as needed.
@@raygold1 Something to also consider is that the cellular iPad has GPS. In my use case, I check transit times via the Transit app and look up directions in Google and Apple Maps without having to retrieve my phone while commuting via public transit and doing work on my iPad. I have also used my iPad for GPS while driving when I rented a van. It was a nice experience. I can also receive notifications on my iPad at any point of the day, which means I can choose which notifications to appear on my iPhone and which ones to appear on my iPad. Another plus. Using my phone to hotspot has proven to be annoying for me. I’m not always accessing data when working on my iPad. So, if there is no activity detected, the iPhone will timeout and disconnect the hotspot. The amount of times I have had to reconnect my iPad to my iPhone, because I took too long to use internet data, has had me vow to never buy a WiFi only iPad again for as long as I intend to work with it out of the house. It’s so much easier to use a cellular iPad. No need to worry about finding a place with public WiFi, either. I went to my favourite cafe one time when their internet was down. Didn’t even realize that happened until I saw they had a sign saying it’ll be back up the next day.
I'm a business user through and through, so no music and video editing needs for me. I'm using an ipad Air 4 since the last 2 years and I've never missed my old macbook air. Instead of the magic keyboard, I've gotten the Logitech one and the Tukzer pen instead of the apple pencil and my setup was less than $400. The biggest addition for me was getting a 1 TB external hard drive where I backup my large files and pictures off and on
I have the newest Air model, and I really love it! I primarily use it to read books, some light gaming, digital art, and note-taking (I work remotely). I know there are a ton of things I can do with it, and I haven't even scratched the surface, but so far it does what I want it to do and in the future I plan on using it for video editing once I get back into consistent uploads. I will also use it for FaceTime video - I like the bigger screen compared to my iPhone, and I don't like using FaceTime on my Mac.
I’m an engineer and I solely use the iPad Pro for work and leisure. I love it. Don’t really use it to edit any video, but if I had to, the iMovie app will surely suffice for my needs.
I have an M2 iPad Pro for my illustration work. Started a full time in house illustration job last month which supplied me with a M1 iPad Pro, so though it’s older, it’s now my main device for work purposes. Though the M2 iPad Pro is my personal device, I’m debating about selling it, because now it’s collecting dust since all my work is done on the other iPad Pro
I use my iPad Pro for everything except when I’m working with exchange admin. Office products are still janky, but the work around is the online versions of those apps. iPadOS 17 will help. I have an old dell xps for when I absolutely cannot use my iPad.
Yea I find my sysadmin stuff for O365 and some linux administration suffers when using the iPad pro. I can usually just RDP to a VM to get something done, but that isn't the best experience either (especially OOB interfaces like DRAC and ILO). I enjoy using for communication and calls\meetings though.
I have the 2021 12.9 M1iPad Pro with a DOQO 2022 Keyboard Case and it is now my main computer for most everything I do. When I need something with a little more power I will go to my M2 15 inch MacBook Air. But 99% of what I do I am on the iPd Pro for it. My Video editing I use DaVinci Resolve since I have on the Mac and Photomator For my photo editing I do it all on the iPad Pro and with the case I am using I can be anywhere in the room working. I really do not miss being on a Mac anymore and with iPadOS 17 it make the iPad Pro even better.
I use it as a supplemental device. The only thing lacking for me is microsoft excel is very limited on ipadOS. So I ended up using teamviewer and remotely use my pc thats in my house. I have a laptop but its heavy and i like how easy it is to hand my clients a single ipad screen for them to browse through my work. Sure i couldve gotten a surface but from my experience, an ipad is more durable than a surface
12:37 In iPadOS 17, go to Control Center, tap the icon that shows the current audio destination (located to the top right of media controls), and tap “iPad” (it should have an iPad icon next to it). I think this also works in iOS 16. I happened to discover this by accident when first exploring my new iPad Pro.
I guess iPad is still for what Jobs had shown us - sitting in front of a computer less. For some, add drawing. If it can be the only computer - great, but for me it can only replace a notebook - Macs share screens nicely. I also appreciate the new desktop like features of iPadOS, but for me the best multitasking on iPad is reaching for another iPad.
I've tried using it as my main computer for years now, but I've given up. Multitasking to this day is still bad. You can't export a video in the background, it just stops. I've tried multiple mice and scrolling is not great if they're not from Apple, also sometimes my cursor would just disappear. MS Office is a kid's version on iPad OS, not useful to anyone who really works with it. Sometimes apps are lacking features available on the web but when you try to use the web version it redirects you to the app and there's not much you can do about it. In some case using incognito mode solves it, but for Apple TV for example, it's impossible to load the web version on the iPad unless you use a third party browser. And if you're wondering why I want the web version, it's cause the Apple TV app displays content in really low brightness even when it's all the way up. On the web it's fine. Also, the battery is not as good as a Mac.
How do you interface the iPad pro to external hard drives....I use them for storing all my daily files for video editing. I also use lumafusion but also use final cut pro on my iMac...and now there's an app for the iPad now for final cut pro.
I got an 11 inch M2 cellular model for school. I know it's overkill but I'm the type of person to use something till it's last breath. So far it's quite useful for classes and other things. I have a windows laptop and android phone, so I use a USB c thumb drive to transfer files from between the devices. And it works well. The ipad gives me enough performance to finish my work. I have to admit that part of the reason why I got it instead of the air was the 120hz display. I'm waiting for the ipados 17 stage manager update so I can use the ipad just like a computer.
yeah same for me. My iPad mini 4 and iPad 7 lasted long enough for me to trust iPads over android tablets even though I have an android phone. I feel like with the M2 and 120hz it could last 5+ years. I only use it for note-taking and entertainment stuff but the jump from iPad 7 to iPad Pro is very huge.
Biggest issue with iPad is Mail. Why oh why are attachments in terms of sending and receiving not the same as outlook on Mac. If you receive a mail with attachments it drops to the bottom of the first mail if there are multiple conversations. So frustrating 😢
As far as devices go I use my Mini 6 as my main device. I have laptops and desktops BUT my Mini 6 is all I use. CAN'T WAIT for Apple to HOPEFULLY bring out a gunned up Mini 7.
My experience is: Laptop = main computer & processing machine, iPad = portable viewer and minor editing of things created on laptop + personal admin (online transactions, planning, writing, reading), Phone = contact & leisure
I like my iPad 12.9 M1, but as someone that enjoys AAA games gaming is non existent on the iPad for me. Work-wise apart from emails and creating simple word documents same case, as office on the iPad is a butchered version of the actual suite same goes for a lot of apps. Which kind of begs the question if apart from artists or amateur video creators why use this aspect ratio as it ruins the experience when consuming media, you essentially have a 10’’ instead of 13’’.The iPad unfortunately is incapable of replacing a computer for someone that expects a computer to operate as a computer even though the limitations of the tablet is not the hardware but the software and that’s by design can't really fully ditch my MacBook or my desktop PC for an iPad.
Since I bought my 2021 M1 11” iPad Pro I haven’t used my MacBook Pro much. It handles all the things I throw at it with ease. Especially when paired with a Smart Folio keyboard and pencil. Using Lightroom for my photo’s and even being able to connect my camera directly to the iPad Pro blows my mind. 🐬
My fingers are crossed for the rumored updated version of the next iPad Pro. I have an M1 12.9” inch pro, and I use it for everything from content consumption, digital artwork, and video editing. I don’t have a computer, and use my ps5 for gaming. For my use case it is 90% of the way there. Just a slightly larger display. The only time it feels a little cramped is when digital painting in Split View, and having a reference photo in procreate. The video editing apps I use are Davinci resolve, and Final Cut. Just get some of the weird kinks worked out with the files, and some weird stuff in resolve and Final Cut, and it will be the perfect device for me. I already don’t feel the need to ever go back to getting an actual Mac or laptop. Here’s hoping that the next one is everything I hope it to be. Thanks for the great videos and reviews.
My M1 Air 5 plugged into an external monitor has been a game changer. External mouse+keyboard too. The only thing that’s annoying is that if I’m watching a movie or episodes and won’t need the iPad’s screen, I can’t turn the screen off like a clam-shell laptop. I have the keep the iPad screen on no matter what to keep my monitor’s screen displaying iPadOS. Potentially leading to screen burn-in. Display tech has improved compared to decade ago but the chances of screen burn-in is never 0% 👀
I am trying to move exclusively to my Pro but some issues like third party apps continue to frustrate. MS Office is not the full version and I continue to remote into a PC to carry on work such as bulk renaming of files and other activities. I love my Pro and hope one day that MS will produce a full-desired version of Office that doesn’t misbehave on the web version. That would really help to make the change.
I think you pretty much nailed it towards the end. You can pay an awful lot for an iPad Pro setup with keyboard and trackpad that JUST ABOUT suffices as a computer, or pay half that for a full-day Mac. It’s a really tough sell, but I suppose that Apple’s answer to that is now the iPad Air, which like the MacBook Air does basically everything that its Pro sibling does, just not quite as well.
Great recommendation. The M1 Macbook Air at $749 is a killer price. I highly recommend it too its such a bargain. You can also shell out another $150 to get a new designed Air. M2 Macbook Air for $899
12:38 you can only route the audio to the Airpods Pro, a bluetooth speaker, or headphones tho. But I agree it’s not that easy/elegant to choose audio output especially if you’re binging TH-cam videos.
I purchased an iPad Pro 11" after the pandemic because I was hooked on digital art which kept me insane and entertained. However I am still using my Macbook Air 11" (2015) while watching videos and online movies.
Had an Ipad Pro for 3 years. Always hated doing anything else than watching netflix. Sold it and bought a MacBookAir M2 (nearly same prize, size and weight) and am so happy with that decision.
My laptop has been collecting dust ever since I got my iPad Pro 11" paired with a Logitech Combo Touch. I use it to take notes, edit photos and videos, watch videos, take video calls on Zoom, make documents using Word and Excel, and also when I play games, I can easily remove the keyboard or rotate it on the back of my iPad while my iPad is still protected by the case.
i have a 2014 mbp that i thought was dying in 2018-2022 ..it is not. its still working just fine. but i did buy a 2018 iPad pro, then the m2 iPad pro that i am planning to use as my main once apple stops making updates for the mbp.🐬
I don’t have an iPad Pro, but I use my 2020 iPad and my iPhone 12 Pro Max for 95% of my computing. Works just fine. I used to have a MacBook Air, but found that I almost never needed it.
I had an iPad since the first Air all those years ago and I was sold ever since, but it wasn’t until my last iPad Pro 12.9 and now my current iPad Pro M2 11” did I use them exclusively for everything other than PC gaming or photo printing. Between the portability and the amazing display, whenever I use my 1440p 60hz display on my windows pc it’s always way more disappointing. I wish that external monitor support was a little better aka clamshell mode and more application compatibility, but it’s getting there.
Good video. I would just say that when you cited the fact that a MacBook Air is cheaper than an iPad Pro, it is important to remember that you are getting 2 devices in 1 when you go iPad Pro. You are getting both a laptop and tablet. So that helps justify the price a little more. Second, ppl can use the iPad Air 13” as their laptop as well and that would be cheaper then going iPad Pro. The M2 chip will for the most part plough through what the m4 can because the software is the same for both
I had the dream to replace a MacBook with an iPad cause i like to have a convertible setup like for consuming TH-cam, Netflix etc an iPad is a great device especially on the go. That’s why i ordered the iPad Pro back in 2018. To be able to get the work done, i got the Magic Keyboard as well. A few years and WWDC with iPadOS updates later, it has improved a lot but i think it is still a way of workarounds. The file management at first, goes along with pro apps usage like Photoshop, LR, FCPX but still working on office stuff (copy, pasting, working on sheets or presentations) it is not as simple as on Mac. I am tired of using workarounds so i started using my Mac more often what wasn’t my real intention. I still want to get rid of a MacBook but i don’t want to go the extra steps only because its an iPad.
Great video. I’m working now with Apple ecosystem and ipad only. Never regret it. My work is complex and difficult and I don’t need windows mess and time killers like notion. Lack of notifications and overcomplication of simple tasks pushed me away from the Macbook. I have a Macstudio for the tasks I cannot do on ipad but I do that in the evening and I’m astonished every day how few they are.
For Me I use my iPad Pro 12.9 M1, I came from a 1st gen iPad Pro 12.9. Saved money by buying a 4th gen. Magnetic keyboard, plus the leather/ web device with two pockets you showed on one of you video when the 5th Generation came out. Great product iPad Pro. I will keep this iPad for 5 year and see what is out there. Thank You for Video.
The worst part is actually the light sensor is on the side so if your just HOLDING it normally horizontally chances are youll block it and the screen goes super dim. They shouldnt have been cheap and have a few across the device to see if its a false reading.
iPad is seriously great because u make comics on the side so using it for a drawing tablet is easy (especially when getting a good screen) and I can also do school notes, work, and all the in between. Really good with small drawbacks. I do recommend getting a laptop tho so you can use some things that iPads can’t do.
Great video. Yeah I have a M1 iPad Air and tbh, honestly what’s so important that a regular person can’t do on a iPad that they would on a Mac. I’m in college, anything with the web browser works amazing, it’s fast, tons of useful apps, great pencil options, it can literally emulate your laptop, phone, and notebook all in one. I don’t even use the Magic Keyboard (I think it’s a gimmick) and I still get a very good faux laptop experience. Get a Logitech k380, get a good case that you like, a mouse, a $30 Apple Pencil off of Amazon, and a paper feel screen protector and your all set.
🐬 great video! I wanted to ask, do you always take your iPad on the go with the keyboard case? Or do you try to determine what you’ll use it for and switch it up sometimes?
Only thing i think they need to change on the iPad is to move the apple logo orientation so its the same as the macbook, i think most use there iPad in landscape mode anyway.
My use is just for sending emails. Printing to a mobile printer ect. Surf the web. I don’t use it for work ? What do you suggest. An I don’t own a computer or laptop at all.
I have an iPad mini 5 and still try to find a good use for it. Lately I wanted to read a PDF document and browse the web to explain certain words in the PDF and it was really hard to have both side by side in a way that made sense... :/
Its still bizarre to me that A12Z chip is only better in multi core performance a little bit & was able to run stage manager. Yet the A15 Ipad Mini didnt get it, & the A14 Ipads did not get it as well. Its the 1st time apple has truly made a pro decision on a product. Im not sure why sometimes.
It was a standalone, but now lets other other apps. One thing to dislike is how Apple and google are limiting searches to sponsored content and not supporting fire exchanges of information I saw back in 2004 which has degenerated to tik tok and worse TH-cam is full on ads. fb used to offer more than commercial crap movies and cartoons . So much for the www
I have the iPad Pro 12.9 the new one i use it for home and for work I’m a nurse and u love it I’ve been using iPad Pros every since they’ve came out i only pull out my laptop when i have to and since apple has updated its been over a year since I’ve used my laptop
I have a the 12,9 M1 iPad Pro 5G. I enjoy it a versatile travel device. I always have it with me and can leave my work computer at work and my personal laptop at home. I like it for quickly being able to withe emails, sign a contract, sketch up an idea or work in a spreadsheet while one the road and being online without having to tether. It’s not replacing my laptops but somehow it improves my life just enough to justify the steep price point. I am super frustrated with the front facing camera placement thought. It makes it completely useless for video calls.
I moved to an 11’ iPad Pro from 2020 when the newer form factor came out. I was super excited cause I had a way outdated desktop and a laptop from 2007 so I needed a refresh. I was bummed when just a few months after I invested heavily into the 2020 ipad then the newer M1 came out and a thicker Smart Folio case so I was pasted by return, but over all it has done an amazing job for about 2.5 years then I had some more complicated work where I had to get a M1 MacBook Air. I STILL use the iPad MORE than my laptop some days. I would love to upgrade but not unless something comes out that convinces me to upgrade. USB-C and the functionary its a great primary device.
im a (fresh out the oven) MD. I've used a chromebook for the better half of medschool and did everything I needed to do (research, docx, pptx) perfectly fine so I know when i start getting that sweet intern underpayment the ipad will be a definite upgrade as my only computer 🫡
I love my 12.9 iPad Pro as my daily driver for work, but there is no way it replaces my Mac Studio/Macbook Pro for video editing. I like having the flexibility to do what I want where I want. When I travel, I take my iPad with me as I prefer the portability, the touch screen and using my Apple pencil.... :)
I used to own the M1 iPad Pro, but I really hated the overall iPadOS experience. All the desktop-grade computing power, yet bogged down on what is basically a modern repeat of Windows RT and Windows S Mode. I sold it for my current Microsoft Surface Pro 8 and never looked back.
I have only used iPad up till 6 months ago, a 12.9 iPad Pro and iPad minis. I finally was able to get my dream MacBook Pro because I thought it would be so superior to my iPads, boy was I wrong lol. I use my iPad mini 6gen for mostly everything and my M1 12.9 for artistry and photography and I don’t really use my MacBook that often unless I’m using my Wacom drawing tablet.
I've never OWNED a laptop. I've been issued laptops running Microsoft Office from employers but have eschewed using them in favour of my iMac (currently 2020 27" with an Intel chip) when working from home and my 2021 M1 iPad Pro both working from home and when mobile. I'm not a "content creator" in the audio/video sense of the term but I do rely on Microsoft Office suite on my iMac & iPad Pro to create content in the banking/finance industry. So far I'd say I've been well served by all my Apple products in the corporate space and I feel no need to use employer supplied laptops. I'll stick with my iOS/iPadOS & MacOS devices thank you very much! (In a pinch I can also use my iPhone 13/14 Pro Max[es] or my iPad Mini for on-the-run changes to documents and/or emulations of corporate mainframe based programmes! Ya'gotta love those beautiful Apple devices! They just work so damn well; why would anyone want anything else?!?)
Trying to decide between the M2 Air 13in or the M2 iPad Pro 12.9. Found a great deal that makes it about the same to get either. I love digital art but I know pros that create their professional illustrations in the older iPads so the pencil is tempting for the m2 air but not a dealbreaker. Any advice?
I am hoping this year Apple lets external camera support be true external camera support. The iPad Pro is my favorite device I have. It can do so much more than people think.
The iPad is in a way better space than it was even a couple of years ago. Though I'd say, if your are a power user on a desktop, the OS will drive you mad. You'll know there is an easier way but you need to go on a crazy carousel roundabout to do simple things. Well covered problems in this video. I'd still err or suggesting people select the cheapest Macbook Air as suggested, its really a no brainer and you can truly extract every last bit of power from it. That said, nothing compares for viewing graphic novels, annotating PDFs, and the pencil is second to none.
My M2 iPad Pro has been a MacBook replacement for me aka it’s my portable computing device to get things started however I have an M1 iMac for at home to finalize most projects. I require a Mac for development purposes but honestly I use the iPad more than my iMac on most occasions. iPad desperately needs a font book that supports .otf format. I personally can’t use an iPad for everything but for most I have recommended it.
Been using 1,5 years Pro M1, almost forget to use my macbook pro. Because it is so portable and fast. Waiting for ios 17. However some websites can not open properly in Ipad due to much tighter security system. I am using it everyday almost 11-12 jam, need to charge several times, the battery deplete fast.
I used iPad Pro for three years as my main device for day-to-day usage. I used it to apply for jobs and brought it for interviews. It works!!!
Wait why do you need to bring it to an interview?
@@zeyy84 If you have to give a presentation at the interview.
@@nuwannilanka 3 years looking for a job? What line of work are you in?

Do you stream your desktop to your tablet?
My laptop gave way about 1 month after I purchased my iPad 11 M2 pro. While taking my time to decide, I gradually started doing everything on the iPad. Some things are easier than others but with Logitech Slim Folio Pro, a multi-connection hub, external SSD and other peripherals, I don’t miss the laptop at all. It’s been 8 months.
Pls me 6 year old I pad am so sad 😞
@@pedro31871I have 2 year old iPad
When the country locked down for covad i purchased a I-Pad 2020 pro and have never looked back. Love the system and can’t learn enough about it.
i'm a video game artist, & i use my iPad Pro as my main "computer" too. I use it for work, & it's simply the device that i carry with myself everywhere i go, next to my phone. I do my work & personal things 95% there. I do own a powerful gaming laptop too that i leave at home & only turn on for gaming purpose.
This is gold. You can tell why you use it, when others could have the same experience and when not. Really a rare review.
So is that 5% of work worth 1-2k
the iPad is not a person. therefore you should write "available for THE iPad"
@@anthonyanthony2783 wrong: shows an incomplete understanding of how to use “the.”
@@rorydeon nope, you're plain wrong. It's not because Apple talks about their products as if they're people and not objects that that's correct.
As someone (student) with both, I prefer using the ipad pro for the display and 120hz, lightness, comfort, but sometimes I gotta go with m2 mb air
1. Battery on mb air is better and My pro Usually dies before the end of the day (so I usually use it more for handwritten notes and less as a computer)
2. The ipad can be.. finnicky? Google docs screen can glitch out, the buttons can be unresponsive. MS office is even worse. Sometimes mouse inputs wont work as intended and you need to use the touchscreen (excel) which can be annoying
I can’t find the best way without paying for more subscriptions…
I am so fed up using my laptop turning them on restart etc just to make an invoice to client.
Yes it can be overwhelming haha

How troubleshooting networking issues with the iPad ?

I couldn't agree with you more. I went to the iPad Pro 12.9 in late 2021 and it is my primary. All OEM accessories inc. pen and keyboard. I never used anything as fast and powerful. Good overview.
@duelibopsame here. I use windows laptop excel just to issue invoice I have to on the old laptop. I just which I can use my iPhone and iPad.
Period. For that price alone I bought a Logitech MX Keys Mini, a Magic Trackpad and a solid metal magnetic stand.
the only valid reason is they want to seperate thier product 😂😂. I want programming on ipad too 😢
I completely agree with you 💯
I'll think about buying the iPad the day Apple allows installation of 3rd Party Softwares in it ‼ Without it it's just a limited restricted form of potentially powerful hardware ‼
It has a very powerful and capable Hardware that could have been an awesome touch screen and pencil compatibile 2-in-1 MacBook! Or "MacPad" ‼
I really miss Steve Jobs, he would have fixed this dilemma for Apple, the way Apple got rid of iPod as iPhone become capable of being an iPod and much more by itself ‼
@@AJSHOPE I agree
I am curious. Why not use your phone as a hotspot rather than use/pay for a separate plan?
@@raygold1 my hot spot is limited to around 10gb per month. I believe that is kind of standard.
@@completesalvation1755 I have no limit AFAIK with my ATT unlimited plan.
You can always download the beta and back up your device useless you’re worried about the battery life.
@glimmerz3464 It's actually my daily driver, so I can't lose my data just for the sake of using stage manager. I'll wait, it won't be long till then.
yeah same for me.
My experience is: Laptop = main computer & processing machine,
iPad = portable viewer and minor editing of things created on laptop + personal admin (online transactions, planning, writing, reading),
Phone = contact & leisure
I got the iPad Pro 12.9 inch and use it for taking client notes, watching videos, browsing the internet, watching videos
Display tech has improved compared to decade ago but the chances of screen burn-in is never 0% 👀
I use my iPad Pro M2 as my daily driver as well and agree with all your points! I love it as a computer
Mine too is a 2018 12.9” gen 3, still use it everyday and as smooth as day 1, no complaints at all
Great recommendation.
I have been wondering about being able to replace a laptop with a new iPadPro. I have a 2021 iPadPro 11” and want to upgrade to a 13” M3 iPad Pro.
I dont see it as a main machine but its great for on the go. With the logitech keyboard and external mouse i have no issues managing systems.
You can change the audio output device, you just Click the top right of the audio control button in control center
Nice. What about a iPad Pro just for casual use of what a MacBook ?
They just work so damn well; why would anyone want anything else?!?)
some Excel functions limitation is still there on iPad version where Microsoft seems don't really care to fix it
Is it you using two mouses at the same time? Can you making an video showing how to setting up this workflow?
