Its all true, during hurricane milton last year there was a chart of which waffle houses were open in Florida. And if that one was closed, you know you better evacuate right now.

McDonald’s was started in the early to late 50s. Henry Bell who started Del Taco started off with burgers and hot dogs but didn’t want to compete with McDonalds switched to Tacos. Eventually he and 4 NBA players started Taco Bell.
Being able to see the food being cooked does something else. My family down south learned that they liked the way a particular cook made the bacon - and learned what days he worked. They made sure to visit when that cook was working.
I was in Panama City FL, during Hurricane Michael. A cat 5 that DESTROYED everything. Downtown was gone. There were literal sailing boats in the street. Over a mile from the shoreline. We're talking BIG boys. They still flew that far. The Waffle House building as it was got damaged. Enough so that it wasn't feasible to stay open. Within 6 hours there was a Semi truck with all of the equipment and giant tents. They were technically closed for 6 hours. They served all of the lineman and rescue workers as well as countless victims of the storm. Such as myself. You have no idea what it feels like to have a hot cooked meal after going through that. The Batman edit hits especially hard for me. They were saviors. After the hurricane, the entire county was put on lockdown. You could leave, but once you crossed the line you couldn't come back. Waffle House was literally being shipped in along with the lineman trucks as the only ones allowed in. Period. You best believe that bright yellow truck sailed past the security checkpoint with a wave. Because they were literally the ONLY thing open for at least a week.

I was stationed in Norfolk, VA from '00-'04, and there is a Waffle House off the freeway heading toward Virginia Beach. Me and my friends used to eat there after benders at 3am. Pretty much free entertainment every night.
When he said that thing about them staying open even when a car goes through the waffle house... That has happened before where a guy had heart palpitations and ended up ramming into a waffle house...they stayed open cooking...even made the guy waffles
There goal of staying open was first for the first responders. If they were laying it on the line for the community then WH was damn sure to stay open to have coffee and a hot meal for them. Secondly it was for the community that would be hit hard from the disaster and would need to eat. When they set up these operations for disasters they usually lose money due to logistics costs but they do not care about that.

Sizzler isn't gone. Not what it once was quality wise. But there are still quite a few locations.
