Thank you so much for the very thorough test results! I ordered a Watch 6 Classic, mainly to control apps, but also for heart and sleep monitoring. I hope they can improve with updates...but if not it is probably still okay for me. They really need to step it up, though...

I just ordered mine.I hope they can fix it and make it more accurate 😅

    • @justinkase1360
      @justinkase1360 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@@RicstasTech I think it does an okay job for comparing one night to the next, generally. I have honestly stopped wearing the watch to bed. I slept fine with it, using the Samsung fabric band, but it just wasn't ideal.
Ultimately, I don't think sleep tracking, even if accurate, really does much for me. I know when I SHOULD go to sleep and I know that magnesium supplement personally helps me sleep better. What more do I need to know? I'm more interested in BP monitoring...which isn't allowed unless you do something with the software. Supposedly it's real easy to do, but I haven't done it yet.

@justinkase1360 thank you so much! I am stoked to get mine, I got the sports band and the fabric band as well, looking to see what us more comfortable when sleeping, or if it will be chilling on my bedside table charging.

@@RicstasTech I also received those two bands. Fabric is more comfortable and actually looks good, IMHO. I had the Watch 5 and never wore it, but I'm really liking this Watch 6. Great analysis. Thank you! As many others here, I am also curious about Huawei Watch 4 PRO performance, since it has sensors from Watch GT 3 PRO which tops your HR accuracy chart along with Apple Watch. Huawei also claimed they improved sleep detection, which was not that good. Another "true smartwatch" alternative to Samsung Watch 5 PRO what would be great to see is Ticwatch PRO 5. It is missing eSIM version right now, but that may not be deal breaker for many.

I have been in touch with Samsung and have had my watch since the 6th so 5 days before release. All of the inaccuracies seen in this video I have also noticed. However I believe the physical hardware is probably not the issue. I was assured by multiple support associates that the watch was designed with the new updates in mind that are coming to android. I would hope that after an update or two these issues will be fixed. Please repost comparisons afterwards to see if there is actual improvement.

I wouldnt take this video as guide.
The sampling on the HR polar 10 is extremely low on the Apple watches compared to the Samsung watches in the spinng, biking, weight lifting. The sampling of the HR polar 10 should be constant in every review, but i see that it is lower on the graphs of the apple devices vs the samsung ones.

I don't want to be samsung biased but I have the watch as well as the huawei one and both the heart rate and the sleep tracking appear to be almost exactly the same when I tested the two during a workout sessions and in the morning for sleep. Maybe it depends on the person but for me I get very very similar results. For example the heart rate on the samsung now(when writing this comment) is 76, while the huawei is 77, the lowest and highest heartrates of the day are 44:140 and 44:139 and the sleep is 8h11m to 8h01. The max difference between steps at the end of the day is 200-250 with over 15,000 total steps. In conclusion during my testings the results are both mainly the same.

Thanks for the in-depth analysis. 👍I've used the Smartwatch 6 to track overall sleep time, the last couple of nights and to me it seems pretty accurate. I also fell asleep during the day yesterday, and it picked that up. I'm not so concerned about REM or light sleep, at the moment. Glad to see HR at rest, is overall accurate enough and blood-oxygen as well. When I exercise, I cycle outdoors and will not be wearing my watch for that. Don't want a tan line 😃, and don't need it. I would like to see a number for the percentage of overall sleep stage agreement, not just a graph of the single (worst) and aveage percentage. Perhaps this could be added as a column in the agreement chart. Maybe, also, if your going to plot the worst, plot the best...
Also, mixing measurements from different references on the same chart would me much more useful if that chart included measurements from (at least) 1 reference device for every watch. Yes, this would mean multiple measurements (for a single watch) on the graph, but at least the data would have more relevance.
For me, the issue of accuracy isn't just relevant to the best available measurements but also relevant to other devices. When the graph plots points from different reference measuring devices, the relevance of the plot points can be lost (between some devices).
That said, I really appreciate your approach and testing. I find it extremely valuable even as is.

      Good.
I've decided to skip the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic ... I do want to see improvements on the health tracking front.
      Improving sensors is not easy,
and there are tons of patents around it
and also around the algorithms that make sense of the signals those components deliver.
It is really costly, takes a lot of investments and payment of fees and royalties to third parties.
Samsung - from my perspective - stuck with what they already have and refrained from any investments re the health tracker functions.
They just added some cosmetic bells & whistles around the Smart Watch functionalities but left the core health tracking functions untouched.
That way Samsung ticked off some good old marketing check boxes at zero cost.
If Samsung continues this path (for cost reasons) it will continue to deliver a nice Smart Watch combined with stale health functions.
I am a Samsung fan but here I will part ways.

Samsung Galaxy Watch has some additional features that the competitors lack, for example, blood pressure and body composition measurements. You could test and include these metrics as well in the full review Rob. Anyway, it is a good review and we don't see much of an improvement on Samsung side with respect to previous generations. PS : Rob, you always say the heart rate measurements when biking outdoor are difficult due to the bumps in the roads. While it is true, do you ensure a firm contact of the watch with the skin during the entire trip ? I do it by tightening the watch strap and whenever it gets loose, I stop and readjust it.

Others have tested the bioimpedance and compared it to DEXA. It was off about 20%, and varied between users. The variation within a user didn't seem that big. On me the variation isn't big, so it seems to track me well enough. What I do is take at least 5 measurements, remove the top and bottom one, and average the rest. That said, I'm very lean and I can track visually as well, and it seems to correspond well.

Just got my Watch 6 Classic, swapped my Watch 4 which was quite reliable, love the Classic watch 6 appearance. I've done a few exercises wearing both the 6 & 4, they give very similar readings. The watch 6 is good only because it's a newer device that's all, nothing else beyond that.
In terms of accuracy, I've come to accept that for watches acceptable accuracy is all that's needed, the GW is acceptable.

I think that your tests are missing one very key test and that is a calorie count test. One that counts your whole day and one that counts only your workout. This is very important for me and for many people that workout and count calories.
In my testing done loong ago, Gear S3 from samsung failed horribly. They were basically making those numbers up and did not use the heart rate data to compute the calorie count, even during workouts. However, second gen of apple watch were already amazing at this, calculating quite accurately the amount of calories burned.
Please consider this as a new addition to your metrics.
    Thanks.

Hey Rob, just wondering if you wear watches for a couple of weeks prior to doing the tests to allow it to "get to know" your body? I have read a lot of smart watches require this learning period before they start giving accurate data. Thank you so much for your videos, you are providing a public service!!

I have a Galaxy 5 Pro, I am 56, a bit overweight, and have sleep apnea. I have worn this watch during three separate sleep studies, and for me it is far more accurate than what your test shows. My doctor was amazed how close it was around 85-90 percent for O2 and around 80% for sleep stages. That is the problem with this review, you really only have one data point. It is possible that companies like Apple calibrate their watch for younger fit individuals whereas companies like Samsung calibrate their devices for folks like me, I.E. the people that really need this type of data.
It would be far more valuable (and conclusive) if these devices could be tested on a wider range of individuals. How difficult would it be to partner up with a sleep study center and get people wear these watches at the same time? This good information, but it would be far more interesting than just testing on yourself.

I'm so gutted by these results! As a Samsung phone user, I so desperately want this watch for the eco system, all the apps and cool features...But what's the point if all the health and fitness tracking is so abysmally inaccurate?! (Which is the primary purpose of a watch for me). Bitter disappointment! Epic fail Samsung!

    Hi Rob,
    nice review as always!
    I have a question.
It seems to me that the video shows the performance of the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic 43mm. Wouldn't the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic 47mm be worth trying too? Having a larger battery perhaps the algorithms could be slightly different. This would also explain the better performance of the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro. Thank you

  • @martalli
    @martalli ปีที่แล้ว +1

Heavier watches seem to have worse HR measurement, and I wonder if the regular GW6 would measure HR more reliably than the GW6 Classic. However, spotty HR measurement is easily remedied by the ability to connect with a separate HR monitor, like the chest strap. I wish the GW's could do that natively. The ability to access other monitoring devices is a huge benefit of Garmins, for example.

Not sure if the size would impact the contact of the sensor with the skin? Also, the band type/material may also impact the way the watch "slides" on the wrist.

Great video, thanks! Maybe it would be helpful to compare chest straps at some point. I have a PowrLabs that seems pretty accurate compared to my pulse oximeter. I decided to get a Garmin HRM Pro Plus to go with my Garmin watch and get extra walking /running info but had a lot of trouble with HR accuracy compared to the pulse oximeter. The conductive electrodes on the Garmin didn't seem to get a reliable signal from my skin and would put out readings that were off. I finally returned it. Maybe I'll try the Polar strap next.

That's a great video. There's one thing though, that makes me wonder. Watch 4/5/6 normal/pro/classic all have the same(!) main sensors. So why do they differ so much. In at least one graph same goes to Apple Watch Ultra compared to other sensorwise similar Apple watches.
I guess it's either statistics, differenzt wear positions at wrist or newer software. Would be interesting to verify that by choosing an older watch again if it reacts differently now I.e. similar to the latest model.

I'm not surprised that there are some discrepancies in sleep stage tracking. I wonder if these smart watches are using PAT to produce an estimate. The doctor, who provided the research for home sleep tests for OSA was the former CEO of the company that pioneered the devices. He then sold his company to ResMed, who happens to be a diamond donor to the organization who published the scholarly journal. Home PAT tests were classified as "Technically acceptable." While they achieved diagnostic congruence with a PSG for severe OSA about 67% of the time, mild or moderate congruence was significantly less. Bottom line, if even a medical device misses almost a third of the time, consumer devices are at best giving you a ball park estimate and is best used to measure trend data over time instead of trying to use it as a medical device.
