When I was 8 years old, my father a very frugal man, purchased a record player...I was pretty shocked. My father was not very educated and worked minimum wage making pallets at a local lumber yard. He also purchased a few records, the first one he put on, and the first record I ever heard was Glenn Campbell's Greatest Hits (I think was the title). I had never been interested in Country Music, but Glenn's music was different, it was like nothing I had ever heard before. At 13 I picked up a guitar and learned to play Glenn Campbell songs for my Dad...he enjoyed it so much. Today, when I hear a Glenn Campbell song, it brings back those great memories. No matter what anyone says, I believe Glenn Campbell was the first serious country/pop cross-over star.. paving the way for others to follow. There would be no Garth Brooks, without Glenn Campbell. There is a video here on TH-cam of Glenn showing his guitar skills, look for it.. it is just amazing.

I am 63 and I was a rock and roller in my youth, as a listener. I never thought much of Glenn Campbell. Then, I went to his last tour with his kids. An even addled by disease he could still play the guitar. I searched for more songs from Glenn and boy was I wrong about Glenn Campbell. He is LEGEND. Besides all the other session work he did, which is enough for the hall of fame, his solos on Gentle on my Mind brought tears to my eyes. God bless Glenn and may he rest in peace.

Very true. When I inherited my late sister's record collection a Crystal's album had Glen as a credit. Never knew he did so much session work until years later as when I got those records there was no internet. He is one of my all time favorites, be it a singer, or guitarist, and to not read music, he was brilliant

Glen Campbell is one of th best guitar players from the 1960's and 1970's. Not many people know of his studio work, playing guitar Rock and Roll bands as well as his writing songs and his velvet vocals. He was a true artist of his time!!!!

When you hear a natural musician like Glenn it’s amazing. They can play anything. Immediately.
    You can tell the difference.
Some musicians have to practice an practice to get it. People like Glen do it in one or two takes.
That’s the way of a studio player.

To me, the true Christianity was always there deeply buried inside him from being raised that way, just celebrity lifestyles, money, alcohol, drugs, fame being on the road all the time...got in the way. He got back on top as nd is singing in heaven now. So Loved and Missed. Play his music all the time. Thank you for this.

Glen's cousin, Joe Erwin, went to my church in Long Beach, CA and would tell stories about singing with Glen and the extended family on Sundays, in Delight, Arkansas. Joe himself had the most incredible voice you never heard. If he wanted to he could’ve been a professional singer. The extent of his “career“ was entering many singing competitions, at bars and clubs, winning every time. He had the deepest, richest, warmest voice I’ve ever heard. RIP Joe.

Glen Campbell...truly a nice guy. I was 8 years old the first time I heard 'Rhinestone Cowboy', and that song to this day...brings back all those childhood memories I have of growing up in rural Texas. It wasn't however, until my teens, that I re-discovered his earlier hit, 'Gentle On My Mind'. My fav-o-rite Glen Campbell track. What a masterpiece. And his guitar picking...is simply off the charts. What a performer. 👍😎👍

He went through a "Kenny Stabler" phase... right? Man, I miss the 70's .. Born in 1963, Glen Campbell was my firs memory of music... I use to sit in front of my parents big o'l console stereo system with vacuum tubes i could see glowing through the cabinetry... It was bigger than a sofa bed (and just as heavy) I'd sit Indian style, playing a ping-pong paddle, then badminton racquet then a tennis racquet ... Finally, when I was 13 I got a Yamaha acoustic guitar for Christmas.... Been playing professionally for 35 years now... ALWAYS play at least one Glen Campbell song ... He was my hero (and my dad) ... Now I dedicate "Gentle On MY Mind" to my dad who went on to be with our Lord in 2014 after a life of victory. Last year I started recording a tribute memorial record to Glen... I live in Saint Augustine, Florida, so I'm giving a bit of Spaniard's flare with a dash of Latin Percussion... Thank you Glen Campbell for ALL the many years of great music and great performance, and thank you for you bold witness and testimony of our King and precious Lord and savior Jesus Christ! ~Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all the earth: Make a loud noise and rejoice and sing praise.~

My Dad Ronnie McKinney met Glen when he was 15 or 16. My dad needed a guitar player for a gig in Kemah, Texas . My dad went to pick him up never having met him and told him during the car ride to the gig to try to keep up. If you get lost in a song just stop playing and come in when you can. When they got on stage Glen plugged in his guitar and started warming up playing more than they were going to play all night! My dad knew he had found his guitar player! Glen said himself on the Chris Issack Hour Interview that it was the first time he got paid for playing. My dad, Ronnie McKinney and Glen lived together for several years while playing around the Houston area. They remained life long friends until Glens passing. My Dad passed in Dec. 2016. I know they are picking with uncle Boo in Heaven!

I think GC was in the movie "True Grit," with the Ovation, right? First time I ever saw Glen C (on TV) I was a over-confident Jr. High kid and thought he was a hick for about 30 seconds. My opinion changed real fast. What an amazing talent and so sad to see him in his last years.

Not long after the Beatles were on Ed Sullivan....CBS bought out Leo Fender's Company and started a policy to have any Artist on a CBS TV show use a Fender product to assure exposure by the old style Product placement when Companies sponsored the commercial free Shows .
Mason Williams was an Executive and share-holder of CBS , he composed Classical Gas and
got on the 1968 Smother's brothers TV show to play it. Glen managed to Host the show for the Summer break and was given his show in 1969 on CBS with the support of Tommy and Dick.
The Fender Company had also owned ' Ovation ' guitars and had Glen use it to prompt sales while Mason Williams ( CBS ) got Glen to also do Classica Gas on his Ovation guitar.
Not sure if the Beatles came back to the Sullivan because I don't thing Paul would have kept his 4001S Rikenbacker in the case while handed a Fender , or that Ringo would play Drums made by a Company also owned by CBS.
Check out the Sullivan shows after 1965 and watch for Fender products even if the singer Lipsync while the band plugs into dead Fender amps .

I love this show helps me to understand him a little better. He will be missed. I would like to send my condolences to his family especially his wife Kim. I am sorry that after you went through all those years when he was ill, then when he passes family members stir up problems for you. So sorry. I pray for you.

Always liked Glen's music. Bought his greatest hits album a few years ago. I'm glad I found this documentary but sorry to see what fame and fortune can do to even the most down to earth people. His faith brought him through at the end and that's what really counts.

Remember his show in the late 60s early 70s. Country and families were so divided. Yet the whole family sat to watch his show. He had a good cross section of music

I was a lineman. I drove main and country roads. This wonderful song was the National Anthem of all of we linesmen because it described the weather in which we worked--the snow, the ice loading and the sag in the wires, and the cold wind in those wires--

I got to “do sound” for this man who was playing for his church’s Ladies group in the early nineties.
I set up the board, amplifiers, microphone, etc.
He came over to the off stage area, reached over, twisted a knob, maybe adjusted a fader and nicely said, “Just leave it right there.”
I left it right there and put my hands in my lap.
    He sounded great!

Glen Campbell it was your song Gentle On My Mind. That was in Roy Clarks big note song book, that was the first song I ever learned on the guitar. I chose that song because it only had two chords (the only two chords) I had learned at that time. That is what sent me off on my musical journey. And I just wanted to thank you. So thank you so much and thanks to Roy Clark foe his big note songbook. Thats where I learned how to tune my guitar . Im 57 years old now. And been playing and singing since I was17years

I had a huge crush on Glen growing up in the 60's Gentle on my mind was one of my favorites. When I hear his songs it takes me right back to the days of playing bike tag and walnut fights on streets till dark with the other kids on my block. Now watching both of my parents struggling with dementia, I wonder where all the time went, and think about what happy times those were. Anyway he sure was a cutie, will be missed.
