Yes tips on all fingers! One polished. Make sure you wash your hands and mannequin before every service during the 10 min set ups and clearly dispose of items in the correct bags. They constantly looked in my trash bags during clean ups.
Thank you so much for uploading this video! I will be taking my test in march! How hard is the Theory test? Im super intimidated by it as im not the best test taker and am struggling with the diseases & disorders.
You can take a practice test for around $25 on PSI Testing website. Look for Michigan Theory Practice Test. It will give you an idea of how the questions are asked on the exam. Good luck!
Hey im just curious each time you serviced the client, why didn't you take the whole setup down and wipe the entire desk with your disinfectant? and set up your towels agaub This is what they taught us in school so i was kinda wondering if we had to do that each time?
@sigilmarks I recommend you do as your school taught you. This video is getting old, and things can change over time. We have removed all towels from our services and use only paper towel now. Initially, when the exam was designed, they said to pretend that all the services were going to be on same person. This was to save time. They have changed it since. This video was to give instructors an idea of how the new exam could be done, but there is no "one" correct way. Good luck testing!
I'm sorry I don't have a list of supplies. The State doesn't recognize one specific way to do a service, so the supplies are not as important as sanitation and disinfection.
Taking my practical this Wednesday at Southfield location. Is the barbicide in cup required? And did anyone pass without having to use their soaking bowl during manicure?
I took my test in Southfield basically followed all these instructions but I failed. I called left emails everything trying to figure out why I failed and still haven’t gotten a response I tested in January in the Southfield location.
I'm very sorry to hear that. I also had a student fail at that location but pass in Grand Rapids. I was told that both locations are not testing the same way, and PSI was looking into it. You should definitely try Grand Rapids if you're up for the drive.
My school said don't go to Southfield. A whole esthetics class failed but I think passed at a different location. Southfield is on bullshit and needs to be checked into immediately.
Hi! I was able to find the Michigan guide when I printed out a few months ago. So I should be good but still am attempting to get ahold of PSI to let them know the guide is not accessible on their website. Also wanted to reach out and ask can we just label the remover, cuticle remover, lotion, etc with our own labels? I see yours are in small bottles and wanted something similar.
Question…. Do they require us to wear gloves for every service now? I took this test in 2007 and now going back to retest as I let my license lapse 🤦🏼♀️
If you choose to wear them, then definitely change them with each service. You must change them with every client, and that's what you are showing them at state board. You are basically showing them that you wouldn't wear one pair of gloves with multiple clients/services.
@Melissa Samuelson No specific brand, it just needs to be an odorless product. Tammy Taylor makes one, and I believe OPI does too. We just use a cheap off brand because we only use it for testing.
If you use barbicide wipes instead of spray, how do you handle implements that I see you putting in the barbicide jar (tip cutter & nail brush). Can those be used just once then placed in the multi-use trash bag?
@@joellezebarah9597 so I brought wipes instead of spray/paper towel roll. Ran into a glitch because the testing room has NO paper towels! So after washing my hands each time, I had no way to dry them! SMH!
Any inexpensive product will be fine. Just make sure to practice with it so you have good control of your product. We use "All Season's," an off brand from Marianna.
We got items out because we packed our hand sanitizer in our setup bag, and you have to wash and sanitize hands before setting up the table. We place a piece of paper towel down because we haven't disinfected table top yet and need to keep those supplies sanitary. You can do it however you prefer. We just find this way more simple.
I did that and the footer says 2009? I know in the past I have seen one with a different date. The link on the PSI website does not work. I emailed them and they didn’t help. I appreciate your help.
Im supposed to text at Southfield this Monday. Im very nervous reading these comments on how they are failing people. Any updates on this ? Im very nervous now.
I can't say if it has gotten any better. I haven't had a student test there in a while. The main thing to remember is that you must abide by all state laws and rules to maintain safety and sanitation.
Hello! Next week i have my practical manicurist.Thank you for this vidio is really helpfull for me.I want to know -Whats the Rsts sheets?Where do you find?
Everything chemical that you use during testing, has a Safety Data Sheet (SDS), usually online or you may have to call the manufacturer to have it emailed. My students have never been asked for them, and PSI representative said it wasn't necessary.
I take mine on Monday at the Southfield location! There’s some differences here than what I was told. Do you have to have the EPA spray? My school gave me labeled wipes. Do we have to have the wet sanitizer jar? I was told that wasn’t required. I was also told polishing during the manicure is not required, do you know if this is accurate? I’m taking the test for the 3rd time on Monday and I feel so misguided.
I suggest doing it the way your school taught you. Every school can train differently. I'm not sure about the barbicide jar or polish, I've never been told either way. Wipes are ok.
Im a little unsure if i want to test again due to letting my license lapse. I graduated from my nail tech program back in 2001, but I really want my license back activated. It seems like alot to retake. Any advice?
@BeadnWithNicoleB so sorry, I just saw this message. Many places will train you to pass the exam for a fee. I definitely think it's worth it if you plan to work in the industry for an extended period of time. Milady has an exam review book you can purchase. I often see them sold used. I would see what's available to you in your area. Definitely reach out to local cosmetology schools. Good luck
@TheMoGiselle This video was created mainly for my students and other instructors who already have an idea of how to take the exam. There are no exact steps in the procedures. Instructors, apprenticeships, and schools can choose to train differently. The most important thing I wanted to convey in this video was the importance of sanitation, disinfection, and safety in the workplace. I really should make a new video because you weren't the only person who would like to see a table view. If you send me your email, I can send you my procedures and steps handouts 😉
@@joellezebarah9597 Oh idk if u know but my school says that they changed the requirements for the state board. It's just like the video but we need a blood spill kit now. We haven't went over that yet but I'd still like to be prepared as I'm struggling really bad. Did you hear anything about that?
Yes, I briefly talk about the blood spill kit in the beginning of the video. We don't pull it out unless asked for it. It is just a baggie labeled Blood Spill Kit and has Band-aids, Gauze, Antiseptic wipes, Neosporin, and a Bio-hazard bag for bloody items in it. We just keep Barbicide on our desk for bloodborne pathogens. This video is for the newest State Board Exam.
You don't have to do the steps in the exact order we do, it is just how we train our students. If washing your hands first works better for you, then you can do that. My students put out trash bins first so that they do not touch bins with clean hands.
I followed the exact steps and failed by 1 point. I’m sick. I’m going to have to go Grand Rapids. The beginning and ending is where I keep scoring the lowest.
@NM-iv7wv So sorry to hear that. Unfortunately, they don't tell you why you lose points. I know that both locations are not consistently testing the same way.
I transferred my license from a different state to Mi, and they required me to take a test . Now, I need help if anyone know where can I fine a book to study.
@@ilikepho. We use Milady Nail Technology with Foundations. You can order both books on Amazon.com together. Some cosmetology schools are willing to prep individuals for testing. You can also look up test prep material online PSI Testing website. Make sure to look for Michigan's exam.
It is not necessary because we showed the Proctor that we will be disinfecting the table during setup. We swap paper towel out between every service to show that we will clean and disinfect in between every client.
Thanks for that information. I will definitely pass that on if I speak with any other representative from the company. As far as I know, they were supposed to take points away for not washing during every setup.
Yes. It is supposed to be pre prepped with a foundation. We use acrylic to mimic short natural looking nails. Mechanical hands with interchangeable fingertips are not allowed.

All products must have the original labels. I still haven't been able to get the test guide. The one you have should be fine. Good luck.
Question…. Do they require us to wear gloves for every service now? I took this test in 2007 and now going back to retest as I let my license lapse 🤦🏼♀️
You don't have to wear gloves at all. We just choose to wear them.
If you choose to wear them, then definitely change them with each service. You must change them with every client, and that's what you are showing them at state board. You are basically showing them that you wouldn't wear one pair of gloves with multiple clients/services.
What kind of oderless acrylic did you use. I'm a little confused about that
We use All Seasons brand from Marianna. It's not very fun to work with, but they only practice state board with it.
@@joellezebarah9597 do you know if there is a specific brand you have to use for state board? Or just any no scented?
@Melissa Samuelson No specific brand, it just needs to be an odorless product. Tammy Taylor makes one, and I believe OPI does too. We just use a cheap off brand because we only use it for testing.
@@joellezebarah9597 thank you so much for your help
@@melissasamuelson3523 you're welcome 😊
Hi! I’m about to take my practical! My only question is, is it okay to not change your towels between each service and just the paper towel?
Thanks!!
Yes. We only use the same two towels for the entire exam.
Can we put together and seal our own kit, or do we need to purchase sealed kits? Thanks!!
The only item that has to be sealed is your odorless monomer liquid. You can absolutely put your own kit together.
Hey can we get an overhead view of this exam please to see what’s being pulled out 😊❤❤❤
I'm working on an updated version. I will definitely get an overview on the next one.
will you have this completed soon? Taking my test in 1 month. @@joellezebarah9597
Hi, Can I use disinfectant wipes instead of the spay one?
Absolutely. I apologize for the delayed message. I haven't checked them in a few days.
If you use barbicide wipes instead of spray, how do you handle implements that I see you putting in the barbicide jar (tip cutter & nail brush). Can those be used just once then placed in the multi-use trash bag?
Absolutely
@@joellezebarah9597 so I brought wipes instead of spray/paper towel roll. Ran into a glitch because the testing room has NO paper towels! So after washing my hands each time, I had no way to dry them! SMH!
do we not have tape the multi use and single use containers to the table?
I'm very sorry that I missed your question!
Hi! What kind of brand do you recommend to use on the test for odorless monomer liquid and polymer powder product?
Any inexpensive product will be fine. Just make sure to practice with it so you have good control of your product. We use "All Season's," an off brand from Marianna.
I know you left those items on top but should you have sanitized before taking those bags out kit
@@joellezebarah9597 ok I’ll try that I left my sanitizer outside the kit but I failed anyway 😂
I did that and the footer says 2009? I know in the past I have seen one with a different date. The link on the PSI website does not work. I emailed them and they didn’t help. I appreciate your help.
I'm looking into it. I was not able to find it either. I will let you know when I do.
Thank you for making this🤍
@@joellezebarah9597 Thank you!
And one more thing please,I want to know the websid for barbicide?
@orjenasulo search "Barbicide." Go to www.barbicide.com and search "Spray." There will be a label to print and SDS sheets.
@@joellezebarah9597 Thank you very much!
Jar is still used and not the polish
Jar is still used, polished is no longer required
Hi, I have to retake mine. Did you pass? I failed mine doing the virtual testing over zoom.
Good luck
@@joellezebarah9597 I'm in Michigan so I will look for it. Thanks
@@BeadnWithNicoleB If you are close to Lansing, ENL Nail Supply was offering practical exam preparation.
@joellezebarah9597 ok ill check it out.
South field location and I failed. Going to take it virtual tomorrow morning. I know why I failed. Several reasons. But try try again
You can do it’s virtual so you don’t have to be in person
Any luck on virtual? I’m taking mine tomorrow! 🥹
Does it have to be barbacide? Or can we use a hospital grade epa disinfectant?
Any hospital grade Disinfectant is ok. Barbicide is just the most common in our industry.
Do you leave your mutli use , single use bags on the side? Do you tape them?
We use gift bags or paper bags, labeled and lined with a plastic bag.
@@joellezebarah9597 do you tape them to the table or put them on the side/under your desk?
This is nice but why not get closer to the table when you are doing the mock exam? We can’t see 😅
@TheMoGiselle This video was created mainly for my students and other instructors who already have an idea of how to take the exam.
@@joellezebarah9597 can I get the steps and procedure also plz
After the manicuring part what exactly did you pull out? I can't really see it.
I have a service bag for each service including Workstation Preparation. Manicure Service, Tip Application Service, and Sculptured Nail Service.
This video is for the newest State Board Exam.
are the barbicide wipes okay to use?
Hey, since they don’t have paper towel available for us, why not wash your hands before you go in and get the bags?
You don't have to do the steps in the exact order we do, it is just how we train our students. If washing your hands first works better for you, then you can do that. My students put out trash bins first so that they do not touch bins with clean hands.
I followed the exact steps and failed by 1 point. I’m sick. I’m going to have to go Grand Rapids. The beginning and ending is where I keep scoring the lowest.
@NM-iv7wv So sorry to hear that. Unfortunately, they don't tell you why you lose points. I know that both locations are not consistently testing the same way.
@@joellezebarah9597 have any students done zoom?
I transferred my license from a different state to Mi, and they required me to take a test . Now, I need help if anyone know where can I fine a book to study.
@@ilikepho. We use Milady Nail Technology with Foundations. You can order both books on Amazon.com together. Some cosmetology schools are willing to prep individuals for testing. You can also look up test prep material online PSI Testing website. Make sure to look for Michigan's exam.
@joellezebarah9597 thank you. I have been looking, but I am stuck 😪
Hi! I am trying to find the guide. I’ve been on the PSI website and the link does not work. Are you able to help out?
If you google "psi michigan manicure test guide," it should pop up. The header says "cosmetolog," but it should say manicure underneath. Good luck
I go next week to take it again, do we HAVE to wear gloves?
No
Thankyou queen
does the barbercide jar need to have a lid?
No, a lid isn't necessary. Just make sure to remove all tools from the jar during clean-up at the end of each service.
@@joellezebarah9597Do you NEED a jar?
@katez5742 no, we just train our students to use them.
Should we barbicide between each service?
It is not necessary because we showed the Proctor that we will be disinfecting the table during setup. We swap paper towel out between every service to show that we will clean and disinfect in between every client.
Do you also have to wash the mannequin hand before every service as well?
Yes, that is your point for preparing your client during set-up.
In the Southfield location they don’t allow you to wash the hands before every service. You can only wash the hands before the basic mani portion
Thanks for that information. I will definitely pass that on if I speak with any other representative from the company. As far as I know, they were supposed to take points away for not washing during every setup.
Wow 😮. If the Southfield location is so out of date they need to stop testing there that’s so unfair 🤬
@@diaracromwell3906I’m taking my test there this Wednesday, did you still pass ??
I’m a lefty am I allowed to set it up for a lefty?
You may set up however you want. Just make sure to follow laws and rules for sanitation and disinfection.
Can we use a rubber mannequin hand?!
Yes. It is supposed to be pre prepped with a foundation. We use acrylic to mimic short natural looking nails. Mechanical hands with interchangeable fingertips are not allowed.
