  • Oatman is a small former gold mining town east of Mojave Valley, AZ. It is known for the resident donkeys that have their way thru the town...greeting visitors. Town named in honor of Indian captive Olive Oatman...her family attacked (all killed except her, a sister and a brother) by Apaches or Mojaves (undetermined) in southern AZ. U.S. Route 66 passes thru (good motorcycle route). Of note for those pulling campers or driving motor homes, the route...though quite scenic... from Kingman over the pass... is quiet treacherous...winding, 15 mph curves, no guardrails with remains of vehicles who past by and passed over. From Kingman, we stayed on I-40...came around across the Colorado... into Needles and to our RV park nearby.
