An inexpensive lcr meter would allow you to target the coil’s inductance from the calculations if the whip is fully extended. An lcr meter is worth it for building coils…although you won’t likely cover 7mhz on the meter.
Pretty good. Decades ago the hot thing was vertical dipoles. That's what I currently run with center load coils on each side. I haven't done any comparisons against regular verticals, I need to do that.
Yeah. Conditions on 40m last weekend weren't that great. I contacted a nearby station on 40 and then the two guys that were having a QSO in the Bay Area (400mi away). W6LW being one of them (as shown in video). He could hear me but the other couldn't. Maybe this weekend conditions will be better. ;)
Good job for tryin Dan,the easiest way to make a coil is say if the whip is 5M fully extended make the coil for 4.5M or 4M so then the tuning is just done by sliding sections in and out,btw for that length of a whip a 34uH coil will get ya on 80M but when ya dont use the coil I wrote on the side how many sections it is for eachband for 20-6M
Yeah. as you saw in the video my first measurement with NanoVNA (at this point it was 28 turns of wire) I was getting a reading of about 4.5 MHz. That gave me a "hint" that if I went for a few more turns I could hit the 80m band (~3.5 MHz) . I may make an 80m coil in the near future. ;)
I bought the MFJ1979 in July of 2023 and made this video about the same time. ALI-EXPRESS has a bunch that you can find. Just look for 5.2m whip antenna. They will have 10mm thread at the bottom, thats easy cuz the make a simple adapter for 10mm thread to 3/8-24 thread.
Screw the 17ft whip with the 3/8th thread, direct into an ampro 40 whip, where the amro has a sliding up & down wip, remove that, and screw your 3/8th thread 17ft whip in there, then run your ground counter poise off that.
Good build. Doesn't look like you were getting the full power out of the G90... likely the mic gain wasn't up high enough? You'd want to see the peaks of your voice having all of the bars filled, up to +60.
Where does the "pop" come from at the end of transmit? Every time I hear the speaker 'pop'. If you dont mind me asking, cuz that would be a dealbreaker for me when looking for a new radio, but I think I dont hear it on other reviews.
I took a rough guess. But better to visit M0UKD website. He has a bunch of calculators on the left side. Scroll down page til you get to 'loaded quarter wave'. I would use that one next time to do a build
the hub or puck is from W0AEZ.COM he has a lot of cool stuff like the Poly Puck V2. which is what youre seeing. he also make custom LiPo Battery Packs for radios.
Great job Dan... just what i was looking for seeing the WRC sporty forty is always out of stock... Dan is that a DIY tripod with a ???? puck..hockey puck?
that tripod was made with a puck from W0AEZ. his website sells them. W0AEZ.com Then I bought 24" sections of 10mm AL. tubing from McMaster-Carr. but you could try 3/8 tubing from like Home Depot. Just be aware that 3/8 is just the tiniest bit smaller that 10mm. and therefore the legs made with 3/8 could be looser inside the puck as the puck was made to have a snug fit.
The tripod was two parts, first is the "hub" made from a guy W0AEZ, His website is W0AEZ.COM. The hub is called a Poly Puck V2. Then separately I ordered 24" lengths of 10mm diameter aluminum round tube to be used as "legs" from a site called McMaster-Carr. More detail on the tripod in this vid: th-cam.com/video/sF6XfhQ2_50/w-d-xo.html
What is the max power rating on these telescoping antennas? No info anywhere. Mfj, chameleon ss17, etc. Nobody is printing power rating. 100w at least i hope, i wanna get one
what a great job you did on that coil, it looks like you bought it in a Ham Radio Store!

so how do i figure what length i need for a 17' whip... to get me 40 meter?
is there a formula i can use , so i can know also what the uH should be?
@@radioman3229 yep go to M0UKD website. on on the left is several calculators. theres one called Loaded 1/4 Wave Antenna

nice! if you're gonna be portable, that's the way to do it, close to the A/C and the fridge. Good work!
I thought the 1979 was out of stock?

Sweet Project!
Thanks! Cant wait to try to make more contacts on 40m with it. Hopefully this weekend the conditions are better.
Awesome video! D’oh! I got 1.5” pvc 😂
Lol. I found 1 - 1/4 pieces at Home Depot. they were 2ft. I think they have them for small projects.
Nice experience, thank you!

Nice job Dan.
Excelente. Lo voy a intentar. Muchas Gracias. LU1FK
Nice homebrew. You know mfj makes a coil that goes with the whip in a kit that includes radials and a mount? Mfj-2286
Yeah, but i wouldn't have learned anything. ;)
Nice video, however, you left out how you calculated the coil size and number of turns to start with.

@@dan_in_sdDo the legs screw in or pressure fit into the puck?
@@kylefreemason the legs are a pressure fit into puck, but puck also has rubber O-Rings in the openings which give added resistance
Is your coiled wire touching?
Nice...How much power does the amplifier give you ? Great idea and Good Work ! 73's KC3ZDW
Its just a 50W amp. the company is 60dbm.com www.60dbm.com/
looks like they now have a 100W model for use with QRP radios, 1 - 3Watts
I asume the groundplane (Counterpoise) is more important than your coil. It might even be directional.
Where did you source the Kaptan tape?
You can get Kapton Tape at Amazon, Digi-Key, or Mouser Electronics. also search for Polyimide Tape as I think Kapton may be a brand name
