My take on this:
I think that Mark and his ex-girlfriend were dating, very in love, but he slowly started to drift away from her because of her psychosis and her light sensitivity "drove her to be more mentally unstable". Because of her psychosis, she most likely became extremely obsessive over Mark and began harassing his friends and family because she thought that they were "taking him away" from her. When they finally broke it up, her mental health had completely deteriorated and she deluded herself into thinking that it wasn't completely Mark's decision but his close one's. She stalked and tracked him down to finally be with him, thinking they could be together forever until she saw that Mark was dating Joyce. Because of the lies she told herself, she felt betrayed that Mark "cheated" on her, so she wanted to take him back AND spend Christmas with him.
Don't forget the demonic ritual stuff she most likely got into to gain the power to bend reality to get Mark back xD
Just a reminder that you should NEVER accept this kind of behavior from ANYONE. You deserve way better than a untrusting and abusive partner, no matter your gender or the gender of your abuser, you dont deserve to suffer like that, you are valid and deserve the best of the best. Be strong, i know you can push forward ❤️.

Seeing Jay's reactions at the jumpscares are really funny :) but aside from that, I do have a working theory about the Ex girlfriend and Mark. The line of "dont make me hurt you" the Ex girlfriend says could indicate that she was not just harrassing/threatening Mark's family and friends, she may could have been physically harming Mark when her health started to deteriorate. Probably due to increase in agression, she could have been suffering from a disorder that made her unable to fully control her emotions nor even differentiate what's right or wrong, as seen in the letter where Mark was breaking up with her but she only underlined the "i love you" which could indicate that she does only wants to see/hear what she wants but does not care in return what the others feel around her. I could perhaps guess that Mark could have been in a stockholm syndrome situation with his Ex, feeling obligated to stay besides her despite the abuse he underwent- but then again, I could be wrong.

The more you think about her she is more and more creepy, she knew he had a ring as well as decorating like all of the house, plus she had a literal wedding dress, and y'know throwing an officer to a window that was on the second floor, I'm assuming there was like 3 cops too. It's also sad considering how he left and told her that he didn't tell anyone where he went. But considering how she is, she didn't accept that and went after his parents and probably his friends, since the other note of her suspecting anyone he could have left with and the body bags. Imagine leaving to protect your loved ones only for it to not to work.

I think that her psychosis began to affect her perspective and feelings in a way that she only hears what she wants (hence the scribbles on the post cards and the "he loves me" underneath the letter of mark telling her she's crazy). she's obsessed with mark so much that she sees Joyce as 'the other woman' and thinks what she's doing is a completely normal thing. because of her light sensitivity she stayed inside and kept getting crazier and crazier so that might explain the contortionist act but that seems farfetched? maybe it's to add to the horror game aspect.
I feel like this 'analysis' is very much no shit sherlock-y but what do I know. I just hope Joyce said yes after all this ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
It’s sad because this is a very REAL THING that happens. I mean, maybe to not this game’s extent (obviously) but it portrays grief in a very unhealthy way. And to be honest, it’s not even grief. It’s unhealthy obsession.

I love it when a game doesn't explain itself. Just pure game logic. I don't need a scientific explanation like it's Resident Evil. Sometimes it's just scary for being scary.
But resident Evil foucs on science and a big organisation that turns people into zombies or creatures which can be scary but it's more of an rpg that foucs on the storyline more honselty you can't really compare it to this game this game is just a horror vampire story
@@sweetchocolate7113 Yeah but a lot of horror centered games (like Poppy Playtime, Hello Neighbor, and Bendy and the Ink Machine) love shoving too much lore into their game in hopes of getting traction via MatPat and theory channels. When your game is riding on the hopes your fans will keep talking about the lore and not the gameplay or story of the game you're doing something wrong. Lore isn't bad, it's when the game for the most part leaves all of the exposition as papers and books that you have to read every now and then. Taking the player out of the horror to learn about an extra bit of story that you wouldn't otherwise know is kind of weird. Do we need to know why Pokémon exist to enjoy it? Do we need to know why Waddle Dees serve King Dedede? Is there a reason we need to know why Bowser has an army of sentient mushrooms?
I'm not saying Resident Evil is doing a bad thing. It's not horror centered nowadays, but when it is, it doesn't drag you out of it to read an essay split between multiple notes across multiple secret rooms. It's when other games try to copy it and put either too much mystery or too much lore bits in hidden rooms with lots of reading. A lot of legendary games often leave a lot of lore as trivia, or something you learn across your journey naturally without having to go out of your way to find it.

While reading the note Mark says "how did she get my address?" so he atleast THINKS she's still alive, so I think Mark just left her because of her mental illness, and I think the mental illness is something supernatural.
She didn’t die, it was confirmed that she was very much alive but couldn’t handle mark being with another woman, only reason she says “he cheated” is because she thinks he cheated on her with Joyce after they broke up. The reason for her powers stems from a ritual that summoned the devil which gave her supernatural powers.

So basically what Mark’s ex girlfriend was showing possibly showed the fact she couldn’t handle the break up would do anything to lure Mark into being with her again, being the person of “you lay your hands on him and you’re next, he’s mine” type of thing and was most likely even abusive towards Mark which we now understand why Mark has serious social anxiety as he fears that his ex girlfriend will be behind him at any moment and possibly kill him (which she nearly does in the game) or Joyce, his new girlfriend.
Mark did follow the exact correct direction that Joyce was leading him towards. Could it have been a possibility that he was transported into another dimension somewhere along tracking through the snowstorm? And now Joyce is a paranormal demonic version of herself in this dimension
I've never seen another youtuber like Jay, with his sense of humor and personality. He genuinely makes me laugh. Love you, Jay. Never stop doing what you're doing

This game hurt my throat, honestly. Usually, I just laugh at you being scared, but this got me good lmao. I think the ex stalked Mark to this place. She trapped you in the house of the people she killed, which is why there is a picture of an old couple he doesn't recognise. She sacrificed them for demonic powers hence the ritual circle and candles in the basement

This game was so well done start to finish. The gameplay was solid, the ex girlfriend was super creepy with the amazing voice acting and design (especially when she's chasing after you with the dress on and has that smile on her face), Joyce and Mark's relationship felt very organic and loving, Joyce's voice actress also did a great job with her lines, and the story was very well put together with how Mark left and while he couldn't do much for his friends and family at least something good came of it in Joyce, and the demonic spooky stuff that happened throughout, while a little bit random, didn't completely derail the main story by taking over as the focus.
Also, I'm happy Mark and Joyce actually got to be happy. No, "But then suddenly the monster is back and one of you dies" nonsense. The game felt like a horror love story and let it end happy like it deserved to.

I think the ex died a due to hypothermia, Inside the house, and her spirit haunted that house. But because her dream went unfulfilled she couldn't pass on properly and stayed, thinking she was alive she stayed in that house plotting for a way to keep Mark as hers. All the notes that were around were actually pieces of her thoughts, documents, letters, those were all memories and her thoughts. I genuinely wonder what would've happened had you not have put the fireworks around. Would she pass on, happily or would she kill Mark?
