So many people today just think you turn on a faucet to get water... That point in time you would have had to locate the spring then have the $$$ it would have taken to build the spring house PLUS the retaining wall!!

There are Scottish games held annually I think in a park near grandfather mountain. But that would be quite a distance from this area, like 2 more hours north on the parkway.

I've been to the overlook and there is the remaining wall and steps of what might have been a cellar in the ground there somewhere as well. However I never noticed the spring house.

Glad you enjoyed the Kilt! That was actually me (my profile photo was taken right there at the remains of the Lodge you were just at, actually). I actually have videos on here on Scottish Highland wear. ;)

I was born and raised at the foot of Mt Pisgah and its a good 30 miles from the Biltmore Estate so very doubtful there was a trail through the woods.

Sorry they show in the records at Biltmore that they had trail cut from the house to the cabin and since George owned all of ti he could cut a trail anywhere he wanted..

It's called the Shut-In Trail, it's 17 miles and runs from the French Broad River(not the Biltmore House) to Mt. Pisgah. George Vanderbilt had the trail cut in 1890, Angel bby.

It was demolished because at that time the National Parks/ Forest Services had a policy of no man-made structures in the parks... they just forgot about the spring house during demolition 😂

Now where did you get on the Blue Ridge Park way to to get to this spot. I have seen the signs off I-40 going from Asheville to Boone for Mt. Pisgah I think. Or maybe I am confused. It looks like there is a good bit of Mountain Laurel up there as well. It is beautiful in the Spring when it blooms and smells so good.

Mary, I go on at the entrance to the parkway which is by The North Carolina Arboretum 100 Frederick Law Olmsted Way Asheville, NC 28806, When I got on the parkway this place was on the right and you keep going up into the mountains..

Nice trivia Spa Guy ! Is the property still in the family or no family to leave everything to ?

Lyn, George Vanderbilt died young and his wife Edith sold much of the 125,000 acres to the Federal Government.. Prior to that The Vanderbilt's started what is known as the forestry service in America on that land.. The Lodge was part was still in the family and was inherited by The Cecil family who owns the Biltmore house but they sold that land the lodge was on to the government so they could build the blue ridge parkway through there.. I also have a video on Spa Guy channel where I visited the mausoleum the majority of the Vanderbilts are in on Staten Island New York... here is that video th-cam.com/video/3loo5GHU_A4/w-d-xo.html
