    to me ed's biggest wizardry was seeing mel in the opening and saying "the thing behind her looks kinda like a target" in like, episode 3

      @@psyculturists i love how you broke that opening down to its atoms man, i never noticed how many symbolisms were there before i binge watched your analysis videos. also may i ask, have you read a song of ice and fire, the book series by george r. r. martin that was adapted to the game of thrones tv show? i'm not much of a reader and i think you don't make book analyzes(i didn't check your other videos yet, i definitely will) but it's my favorite as in character writing and handling heavy themes. i would love to see your opinion on it, maybe, someday. you are loved

      Thanks for watching ❤️ Same Im still blown away at all the symbolism just stacked in the opening and in the show. Can we also say how amazing everyone did for this show wether it was the writing, acting, graphics you name it the killed it!! I am so excited for Season 2. With that Ive been thinking of doing small chapter analysis but am still trying to figure out how that would work. Also love Game of Thrones im sure there'd be tons to analyze in it as well ✨

      @@psyculturists definitely! i'm not sure if i can find the sources but there are some clips of animators recording themselves and people close to them to use as a reference while animating and as a person who's into art it blows my mind how devoted they are to their passion, job, their art. also arcane was made in about 6 years and it shows with enough time and resources how people can come up with wonderful stuff.
      back to asoiaf/GoT, i and a lot of people who read the books think(expectedly) the books are better at explaining the morals of the characters, presenting the inside of their mind and soul and "why's" of their actions. so i'm sure you like the show you will like the books as well.
      if you're thinking about doing chapter(i assume you were talking about book chapters) analysis maybe you can get a pdf or something and stream it while you're explaining so we can see the exact text you're talking about? but i don't know if you want to do a blind reaction to a book or an analysis after reading, i have very little idea how the first one would work lol, never seen such thing before.

    the thing people miss with Arcane, is everyone is saying" Jinx" lived to her name! causing the worst luck ever in everything she participates in:
    - the heist was going perfectly, till Powder found and dropped the blue crystals
    - Vander and the kids were just finally secured their safe escape, till Powder blew everything with her bomb
    - council for the first time agrees on something good and allow peace, just at the moment that Jinx nuke them
    BUT, actually in reality, VI with her hotheadedness and acting without thinking IS the one that started all these tragedies!
    - going for a very risky heist, with little kids.. starting the whole thing
    - deciding to give herself up without counseling anyone.. which led to Silco's trap
    - telling the council about Jinx!! while no one knew about her, making Jayce thinking she can be the name to hang all crimes on and the price for peace! which started the final nuking sequence!
    .
    at the end both were little girls product of war tragedy.. and just exist to make us cry :'D

    Jinx is giving Vi a false choice about "you can have Powder back." Look at the chairs. Jinx's chair is pulled out, ready to be seated at and the chair of an adult. Powder's chair is tucked in and the chair of a child. Jinx can *never* go back to being Powder. She might believe she can in the moment but it's a lie. Possibly a self-lie but a lie nonetheless.
    It's about forcing Vi to pick sides. You are right about Vi blaming *everything* on Silco. It is absolutely a mistake. Vi's inability to see beyond that is a major shortcoming and a huge part of what divides her from Jinx now. The tragedy was always going to happen, the only question was just how bad. Silco dying might be good for Piltover's and Zaun's future ultimately but the immediate results are tragic on multiple levels.

  • @YoungClarke
    @YoungClarke 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +20

    It's interesting to see how many people think of Jinx the exact same way Vi does, that she's Powder and she's just been trapped/tricked by Silco. The fact is, even with her deep emotional scars and mental health issues, she has her own agency in what she is doing. Even before Vander died, Powder was making bombs and had a deep hatred for the Enforcers and Top Side. She had severe issues with abandonment and a desire to feel useful. Several of the pieces that make up Jinx were already there, they just grew over time and Vi wasn't there to see it. Because Vi is the hero, people just accept that how she sees the world is correct even when visually you can see that isn't true for Jinx at several moments.
    It would be really interesting to see how it would go if Vi and Jinx had left together. Because Vi would keep trying to treat her like she was still Powder and everything that doesn't match that idealized image of her little sister is just something Silco did that needs to be undone. Or, maybe she would learn to accept to Jinx is. But we'll never know, that chance went with Silco's death.
    Loved watching your take on the series, this has been great.

    • @pugisherpug4366
      @pugisherpug4366 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think the best way to avoid having people fall in line with Vi's hero lensing was to just remove it and frame her actions and all with a little more critique and uncertainty. I think it was one of the weaker aspects of the show since so many people couldn't see past it and the show never really explores it. I think a lot of people miss that the undercity was always violent and subsequently made Powder/Jinx and Vi violent. Honestly I just don't like the hero factor in morally grey stories.

    That's how you know that Silco is a fantastic character. He played the role of the "villain" perfectly, even hitting all the notes of being hella intimidating and ruthless and whatnot. But then he was also just a man with noble goals, a man who wanted equality, a man who loved his daughter. He's the only villain I've ever wept for when he died. RIP.

    3:22:40 I get the sense that to Jinx it's literally "Enforcer"="people who killed my parents" so having Cait in uniform to Jinx is dehumanizing her,.

  • @abbiem5357
    @abbiem5357 ปีที่แล้ว +57

    This episode could also be considered "the base violence necessary for change." (Ep 3). There are so many clever callbacks - this series is a masterpiece in tragedy! Silco and Jinx in particular just killed me. Their character development is so fascinating. The way Silco comes to understand Vander after resenting him for it, how he is literally and figuratively "undone" by his daughter like Vander was...chef's kiss!

  • @Ace-du7vw
    @Ace-du7vw 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    Jayce chose violence over peace the second he named Jinx. I know he doesn't know she's Silco's daughter but he decided he wanted a scapegoat, and then he doesn't even mention to the counsel that his negotiation for peace was conditional upon Silco sacrificing one of his own.
    Silco wanted a peaceful resolution if he could get it, hence agreeing to meet on the bridge and offering himself for prison, but he was prepared to go to war if necessary. He'd go to war for Jinx. He was never going to give her to them. He knew in ep 3 he wouldn't win a war against Piltover, but he'd rather die trying than stay under their heel. He'd rather risk killing Zaun in a war than betray his daughter. So the counsel voting for peace means nothing in the end, empty symbolism on their part. It's too little too late.
    They'll probably be looked at like martyrs, like heroes who only wanted peace, when they've been carrying out institutionalized violence so brutally for centuries. In the beginning of the show it sounded like they'd barely even thought about the undercity for years. To them it becomes such a huge problem in such a short amount of time and they're not sure what's caused all this unrest.

    The biggest thing I learned from this was definitely the actual definition of empathy. I was told since I was little that it was putting youself in someone else's shoes, so having this new information makes SO many things make more sense and I really appreciate that knowledge, it makes me feel more confident, like I have more solid footing on how to be a good friend and partner and just person overall. My favorite character is... Idk I feel like it has to be Jinx, but maybe Silco or Viktor... Silco really touches something deep inside of my heart that Jinx does as well, but in a very different way. Like maybe it's the daddy/mommy issues in me (my dad gave me both daddy and mommy issues, he had to have both), but he loves Jinx in a way that no one has loved me before, but a way that I have loved before (yeah I been toxic, we all been knew), and it strikes something. So idk, Jinx or Silco.

    What impresses me most about their animation of fighting techniques, are the scenes in Enemy where Vi, Jinx, and Ekko each throw series of techniques. And you can see their differences in skill level not in the techniques themselves but the animation of the efficiency of the mechanics they use to throw them. It's mind-bogglingly good animation.

    Jinx is a character I've always resonated with, even before Arcane was a show. I was always compared to her by friends, because of the way I behaved and the past I've had. To me, she is a character that perfectly represents all of the malice and misunderstandings the world has raised for me. Even as a child I was misunderstood and abandoned, time and time again. I hated people, because all they did was judge me and ostracize me. I hated liars, because there was never anyone around me that was willing to be honest and give me the truth. Instead, I felt either neglected or controlled, and I become destructive, erratic, and learned to rely on myself.
    I pushed others away, because no matter how hard I tried to appease them, I was never seen. My efforts were invisible, or twisted, and I learned not to need people, nor rely on them, because they always let me down. This included my older sister, of course, who I once looked up to. But when I needed her, she was never there, and when I cried out for her, she never understood. So, for a long time, I learned to push others away. I was already the odd person out, and I knew from my experiences that people just disappointed and hurt me. I still don't speak to the family I have left, and to this day it's incredibly hard for me to connect with others or to trust them.
    But watching your analysis of this show has been an incredible comfort, and I want to thank you for that. So often, I watch people's reactions to Arcane and I find that many people lean towards blaming Jinx, or simply writing off her behaviors as 'crazy' and nothing more. And it hurts, it angers, because that is exactly the same treatment I've received throughout life for my mental illnesses and my own person. You are one of the few people I've watched to see her for who she is, and understand that sometimes the life we are given shapes us in ways that are out of our control. So.. Thanks. It meant a lot to me, I appreciate what you do.

    I know you don't normally do animated movies, but I would highly suggest an analysis/watch of Nimona. It is one of a very small number of media that I think even approaches the depth and emotion of Arcane, but with a much more kid-friendly tone.
    Also, if you've got an eye for anime that's surprisingly deep and not widely known in the States, there's one called Symphogear that's not only full of cool fight scenes and hype music, but also touches on some fairly heavy trauma and interpersonal dynamics for what is essentially a magical girl/idol anime with all the flair and style of a shonen/mecha anime. I'd go so far as to consider it my favorite anime (not *best*, there are many I'd rank as artistically more developed, but *favorite*) just because of how thoroughly self-aware it is without stepping into self-mockery. It knows what limitations and expectations it's set for itself and it's just like "Okay, I'm going to do that, but I'm going to commit to it so thoroughly it will somehow become serious while still being kind of ridiculous."

    18:45: So what I've heard about Arcane is that Season 2 is supposed to finish the story of Vi and Jinx and the rest and basically set them up for LOL. Arcane, though, would continue with exploring the broader universe. There's over 150 champions and only 8 of them are positively identified in this season with suspicions for a few others (one of which is strongly foreshadowed) so there's a lot of ground that they can cover if they so wish.
    That might be where the other disks might come in....

    I relate a lot to the line "in the pursuit of great, we failed to do good." It hits a really personal core because I feel this often. I get so carried away with trying to show people how their actions and words hurt others, that I end up hurting them, making them feel like I do (needing to watch every single word they say without break). And so I find that every day I struggle with this happening, I have been working on it, but breaking habits take time and I still get into arguments trying to help them see how what they are saying is harmful that I forget that I'm trying fight an idea, not a person. It's so hard to find the balance of fighting the idea without fighting the people, and in trying to find that balance I have hurt a lot of people. Just today a friend was complaining about people not understanding "basic common sense math" and I couldn't help but feel like I needed to call them out. But in doing so I made my other friends go silent in discomfort, and my one friend go silent in probably hurt and embarrassment (it was on a server, so I don't know exactly how it affected them). I tried to be kind but firm, I told them they are being an ass, but that I love them and I by no means think they are a bad person just because I think they are being harmful. But I still can't tell if I'm doing more harm for good, or if in the pursuit of great I'm failing to do good. Should I have kept silent? Should I have tried to steer the thought process in a less direct way? Where is the line between confrontation and persecution? It's something I think about whenever I hear this line.

    26:00 This is a progression Jayce has been going through since the beginning. At first it he was completely helpless, then he learned that there was power in the world to affect change, but he did not have that power and was disconnected from it except for being aware that it existed. Then his research which to him is disconnected from everything but himself, then he expands his sphere to Victor, then he's pulled into the council, then he makes blind idealistic changes, knowing they affect people, but in a simplistic manner, then he learns that his actions as a councilor have complex repercussions, on and on until this point, where he finally admits that he's part of this. Not some grand scheme or country. But part of the death of this one child. The reality is that his actions have always had these personal consequences, he's just been insulted from them until now.

    the only “””flaw””” arcane has is that there’s only ONE scene of jinx and vander interacting and that’s a personal opinion lmao. this show is so good but that detail does make me think from time to time.
    And the fact that you pointed out how she didn’t react to her parents dead in front of her, but only to vi’s breakdown - which is good i guess? at least she didn’t dwell on that horrible scenario in front of her for too long. but then she does that again on vander’s death…
    i get that it just shows how Vander was able to connect with vi much more than he was able to with powder, but I’d love a scene showcasing that. Vander barely ever addresses or looks at her, except for that short scene when he pours her juice and notices something is off. and his last words, which is cute ig, but also oof that puts a whole lot of weight on vi’s conscience, considering everything that happened.
    my guess is she wasn’t as open to connecting with him as much as violet had to in order to adapt to their new surroundings, always clinging to vi as her support and main attachment.
    but the fact that she indirectly caused vander’s death and that’s never a source of hallucination or paranoia for her… definitely a trauma for sure, maybe she just buried it, too overwhelmed by everything that came before to resurface that cause it would be too much. ugh i really don’t know. it just intrigues me how vander or her biological parents never cross her mind again, as opposed to vi. really attached to vi in every family setting they’ve been in.
    ALSO - this was a blast! thank you for this. I’ve cried like 3 times I think when you start talking to us about your stuff or reassuring that this is a safe space, thank you, really. can’t wait to watch your reactions to season 2 :))

    The Creators said that in Season 2 will characters will become they're opposites and they also said One word to describe Season 2 One said "Forgiveness" another said "War". So I am betting the Heroes of Season 1 will go to a dark place, Caitlyn for sure, revenge changes people, While Jinx will end up doing some saving, The fact Warwick will be thrown into the mix. Jinx will not be the big bad villain, Forgiveness will be a theme I think.

    Vi's monster is Jinx. (She always pushed her forward, to become strong and inventive like Jinx is).
    Jinx's monster is Caitlyn. (That's how she sees her on the bridge in episode 7).
    Jayce's monster is hextech. (He created hextech and now his biggest hear is happening : hextech is used to make weapons).
    Viktor's monster is the hexcore. (The hexcore killed Skye and now he's dependent on it).

The character that was meant as a Harley x Tank Girl stereotype initially they actually gave her a story that explains how someone gets there and wrote her so well that the psychologist could predict where she ended up from episode 1? This is just nuts.

    I personally dont fit the polyvagal theory. I am a fighter when it comes to panic and fear, especially when it comes to the safety of others. When I was little brother who was a toddler at the time fell in the shower while I was in there with him and hit his head, and I immediately got to work calming him down (he wasn't crying for long when I acted as if it/he was okay), drying the wound and stopping the bleeding, getting him wrapped up so I could give him to our nanny to take him to the hospital if needed. As soon as I handed him to her, I immediately broke down. I was terrified that entire time, I wasn't angry or irritated or anything, I was absolutely terrified, but my brain set it aside to make sure my brother was/felt safe. In terrifying situations that involve others, I am a calm thinker and fighter.

The gun was the fastest way to stop the trigger in his mind, he couldn’t stand Jinx there suffering and do nothing.

    2:56:36 I am dying at the irony of this response from Ed. DYING.
    3:17:56 This line, honestly, is more the show writers than it is Jinx. It's almost a fourth wall break. The writers know they have us by the balls. Just watch every reaction video out there and see the abject horror and panic as viewers realize the subtext, only to have the scene say just kidding, we're here to mess with your emotions but we won't cross THAT line.
    3:39:57 you know how someone said earlier that "it can be true and manipulative at the same time"? Yup. Right here. Silco is terrified of losing her and he's twisting the dagger. This is toxic codependency between two damaged people with abandonment issues.
    3:47:39 this moment right here cements every time she's ever been called a Jinx. There's no convincing her otherwise now.
    4:45:00 (ish) Yeah. This episode, this whole show, is just phenomenal. But especially this episode and episode 3. Episode 3 because of how raw and real the emotion is. This episode because of the unbelievably tense dinner scene and the flawlessly executed ending with the gorgeous Sting song and everything. It's hands-down some of the best TV I have ever seen.

    I can't figure a way to say it as well, so here's a comment from another video.
    ReelRai
    Silco blew me away in this series. He's one of the best villains I remember in a looooong time.
    He started out as a hideous villain. Someone who hated Vander for leaving the cause. And throughout the series we're not sure, if his care for Jinx is geniune or if he's just playing her, using her for his needs. I'm sure in the beginning, Silco just wanted to use her, and saw a little bit of himself in her. But by the end... oh damn. Silco is in the same position as Vander was and... he understands. He can't give up Jinx for Zaun. Zaun that he has worked his entire life to achieve, all undone by a daughter.
    Vi loved Powder, and wanted Powder back. But Powder changed, and there was nothing but Jinx left. The only one who unconditionally loved Jinx, was Silco, and I think that's what the end scene is about. Jinx wanted Vi to love her, love what she had become, love Jinx. But after killing Silco she realizes he was the only one who really cared for her, no matter what she had become, and thus Jinx chose to sat on the Jinx chair.
    It's a twisted father-daughter relationship, but goddamn if it isn't well done, and goddamn if I didn't tear up when Silco died

    In the council scene at around 3 hours, 2 mins,, something that they don't really talk about in the show (but hints at) is the fact that Cait's mom owns the company that mines the hexite crystals Jayce uses for Hextech. Now those mines are in another region (Shurima) but they probably use Zaun labor, and she stands to lose a lot of money if Zaun can take over those mines. I know I'm probably saying things that most people know, but tons of the people in chat didn't seem to get it so I'll put it here. Whether or not Vi and Powder had a good chance to talk things out would not matter, because they are currently emotionally incompatible. Vi hates Silco and knowing how much Jinx loves him would just make her hate him more. Jinx hates Caitlyn and the realization that Vi loves her made her hate Vi too. Jinx has killed lots of Firelights and would gladly do it again, Vi has killed or maimed lots of people that work for Silco and she'd gladly do it again. If they got a chance to have a longer conversation, they would come out hating each other even more. They are *incompatible,* and the only reason the two of them and Caitlyn are all alive is *because* Vi said all the "wrong things" and Jinx decided to walk out without hurting them.
    Vi doesn't call her Jinx because 1: She thinks Silco brainwashed her into using it, 2: It reminds her of the biggest mistake in her life, and 3: She associates it with "mass murderer who tried to kill Ekko". Vi would never stop calling her Powder, and if Jinx just decided to turn her back on everything she'd done for the last 7 years, and went back to being called Powder while Vi didn't change in return, it wouldn't be worth the effort. Completely giving up on Silco and her new life just to be with a Piltover apologist that vaguely resembles her sister? That would be actual insanity to her. Vi not calling her Jinx has nothing to do with ignorance, because she's choosing not to based on what she DOES know, and it's indicative of a larger problem with their relationship.
    Whether or not you can say "Vi said all the wrong things" or "Vi should've accepted Jinx" is based entirely based on whether or not you think the sisters should've had a real reunion.

    I gotta say, on the topic of there being good and evil in the show, there absolutely is. You can't have gray without black and white, so gray isn't the absence of good and evil, its simply a state of being somewhere in between. That said, good and evil isn't quite as simple as people seem to think. Generally good people do evil things, and generally evil people do good things. Silco is an example of a pretty evil individual. He's not inhuman, we still see that he's capable of love, but we also see him be a dictator, flood the streets with drugs, we see him put kids in factories and even threaten to kill children. We see him manipulate and blackmail, and we see how little he cares for anyone other than Jinx and himself. He's not a good guy. Maybe not totally black, but definitely a very dark shade of gray.
    On the flip side, Caitlyn is probably the character that is closest to being white. She's probably the kindest, most genuine character in the show, but you still see her do questionable things.

True, of them she has the least trauma but it is a non-negligible fact that she had the opportunity to take the easy road - don't join the Enforcers, guard the tent, not do the investigation, roughly interrogate Silco's goon, leave Vi behind for some enhanced interrogation, not go into the lanes, put on the mask, and on and on and on and on and on she decides to do what's right just about every single time.
