There's something I feel a lot of people miss at the first reveal of post-timeskip Powder/Jinx - I see a LOT of reactors say that her regard for life has dropped, and that she now shows no remorse. But in episode one, in the brawl, the *only reason* Powder doesn't blast a guy with a nail bomb is because it doesn't work. She says they never do, so it can be assumed the reason she tried running at first was because they've failed her in the past, rather than any kind of *moral* reservations about using them. Later, she remarks with *absolute glee* that she's made nail bombs for the Enforcers. Powder *always* had a concerningly low bar for inflicting violence on people not part of her in-group: She can just act on it now.

Exactly! I think people really underestimate how violent life is for the kids in the first three episodes. Sure they have relative safety because of Vander, but it’s alluded to that they consistently get into fights and tough situations. None of them probably had a very high regard for others lives, as they’ve more than likely seen friends and trusted adults die in random street fights and muggings. This is also shown later in the difference of reaction to the child’s death in episode 8 between Jayce and Vi. Vi, while probably still uncomfortable with the death of a child, is very willing to move right past it and continue on her path, despite knowing it could cause more harm to innocents.

@@Blacktoothoneil it’s not even that. When Deckard pulls the knife during that fight, everyone gets serious. They don’t want to kill anyone, and they know once the knife enters the fight, someone has to die. Powder doesn’t have that at all, meeting violence (just a beating) with murder.
That’s also why she is so much better with Silco. She always felt useless, because her talents were either unrefined (gadgets) or usused (her marksmanship, since Vi’s group weren’t killing). Silco gave her training and resources for her gadgets and explosives (she got actual gunpowder/TNT instead of her homemade stuff), and allowed her to kill. Both of these made her feel useful for once.

This is also part of her role as tinker, as someone who creates and uses tools, instead of doing everything with her own hands. Compare that to people like Vi and Vander, who fight with their fists. They show more restraint, because they feel the power they are using, all the the destructive power they have available requires quite literally hand labor. It's hard to fight someone with your own hands. But Jinx uses explosives, that pack a punch independently of her hands. She doesn't need to exercise her own physical power to destroy something, she just throws a grenade or pulls the trigger - this is far easier to do, that punch. She doesn't feel naturally the scale of power she uses. And therefore - no restraints.

An interesting thought: Silco defends Powder when she can see it. When Milo used to bully her, Vi would never tell him off. She only did that when she didn't know Powder was there, she was just frustrated with Milo.

The one thing I would add to your analysis is that Jinx appears to be empowered specifically by *violence*, during which she goes into a kind of dissociative state. Like, her default mode is to ruminate and wallow in self-criticism and paranoia, but when she engages in violence it's a release, like scratching an itch or indulging an addiction. In terms of neurochemistry, when her PTSD floods her with cortisol, she has a powerful need to counteract it with the dopamine hit she gets from being violent and in control.

Silco looking at Jinx is deeper than you think.
Jinx just gave him the thing that will allow him to fulfill his dream, the thing he's been after for so many years, to rival Piltover and be able to demand freedom for the lanes by force.
And yet, in that moment, as he tears his eyes off that object of his desire, he finds himself realizing that he cares about Jinx more than he does the hextech crystal

Get jinxed is what started riot into making more audio visual stuff that characteriized the characters, so in a way it's the first thing that made arcane possible, then there's the sad mummy, made by the person that would latter make arcane happens, and then there's KDA popstars, that proved to the executives that the idea of arcane could work.

    • @hinnyu7748
      @hinnyu7748 ปีที่แล้ว +11

Not really, K/DA was made in the time when they “suspended” the whole project. They didn't want to fire all the artists they just hired (literally they will lose their jobs) for Arcane project so they asked the Music department if they have any project in mind so they can have an excuse to keep those employees by hiring them to do the MVs.. while they are still trying to find ways to persuade the higher ups to continue Arcane.

I think Jinx has BPD, not DID, and the Jinx persona is less an alter and more a role she's trying to fit herself into, because she has no definite sense of self.
She only ever acts like a child, her development was stunted, but she's also still trying to prove herself and be indespensable so Silco won't abandon her. I don't want to mention spoilers, but I'd like to say that later on we see pretty concretely that one of her biggest struggles is trying to decide who she wants to be as a person.

Cait was 15 in the first act when Jayce was 24. And Jayce has probably known her since she was even younger. Their relationship is that of friends or that of siblings. Otherwise it would be creepy

3:04:45: If the wizard hadn't saved Jayce's mom, Jayce wouldn't have had the crystals so Powder wouldn't have made the bomb and Clagger's original success of opening the hole out would've allowed Vander and his family to escape. Even before that, the lack of blowing up Jayce's apartment would've limited the pressure on Piltover which would've meant that Silco wouldn't have been able to make his move at that moment and kill Grayson. And the Piltover side would be obvious.
There'd probably be a Vander-Silco civil war with Silco's side fueled by shimmer, but that's a completely different story

"Is Jinx as an individual going to be an agent of change for the city"
Well let's take a look at the trends so far...
Powder accidentally blows up a building as a kid:
Council discovers Jayce, leading to Viktor learning about Hextech, leading to them teaming up, leading to the creation and perfection of Hextech gemstones and major changes in Piltover
Powder intentionally blows up a building as a kid:
Vander dies, giving Silco power over the undercity, but he also loses the majority of his stock of Shimmer and his Chemtech manufacturing facility, setting him back greatly in his plans for a complete takeover
Jinx blows up a building as a teen/adult and steals a Hextech gemstone:
Draws the attention of Piltover toward the undercity and makes them take note of and fear the weapons potential the undercity has been developing, leading to them making policy changes that move toward further separation and encourage Piltover's council into a mindset that views the undercity as their "enemies" rather than their "citizens".
    She's practically there already...

RE 1:55:00 Vander protected "The Lanes", like a borough in NYC. Its a section of but not all of the undercity, but it was what he could do. Silco's (and used to be Vander's) vision was a full independence of the entire undercity, the Nation of Zaun. Not just The Lanes. At this point Silco has united the "bad" parts of the undercity with the formerly 'protected' Lanes.

It's interesting the chat that someone gave, "it's sad that her best keeps killing more and more people", because that is what mental illness does. It takes your range of best to worst, and is drags it down, whether through emotions, understanding, or self perception, it forces you into a position where the best perceived actions are lower than the worst of your mentally healthy counter parts. What really breaks my heart is that people will only see the actions without understanding the person behind it. It's another reason I get so angry when people say Jinx and/or Silco are just evil, or bad people. It's also why I hate the idea of a "bad person", because you are assigning an entire idea that connotationally means bad, not welcome, but kost importantly: get rid of it. You are looking at an entire person that has experiences and saying, we don't want you to experience anymore, you DON'T get that, we need to get RID of you. Sure, that might not be what you mean, but this is what you communicate whether you like it or not.

Jinx is a very captivating character and I enjoy the analysis on her but could you also give us a bit more on the other characters as well? Jayce, Viktor and Mel's arc ramps up in the third act and I would love some insight on the psychology of these character and what you think of their actions and the rationales behind it, not just their situations. Even the minor characters like Sevika and Marcus are interesting in their own right and deserve something.
Cait's parents heavily control her life, Jayce is "allowed" to be friends with Cait because her family are his patrons. In ep.2 Cait mentioned that his dad would not allow their friendship to continue due to his illegal experimentations. Her parents aren't the only obstacle, if you remember Marcus, the sheriff, was actively trying to keep her away from investigating earlier, so the boring desk job really is "the best he could do".
In ep.2 Sevika mentions it was Vander who built the underground, when Vander refused to fight she leads several people out of The Last Drop, these people then show up fighting for Silco in ep.3. Also in ep.3 Vander and Silco refer one another as brothers, he then says Silco once "had my respect, the Lanes' respect". We can safely infer that Silco was once a high ranking member of the Lanes, so it would follow that he believes he should be in charge once Vander was gone. Vander's betrayal is a large part of Silco's character and I hope you keep that in mind when you talk about him in the future.
If you care about what the writers say on twitter there's a post where they said Vander and Silco founded the Lanes together to build a life away from the mines they used to work in.
You say the mention of her sister triggers this amnesiac barrier which is the reason Jinx is shown with the glitchy switching transitions. This is accurate twice in this episode, but in the scene where Silco is shouting her name she is switching while in a normal state. Later on you may see more inconsistencies with your theory, it seems to me the switching has no correlation with her triggers.
At the council meeting after Jinx's attack one of the councilors mention Noxians. In the lore Noxus is a militaristic, expansionist nation. The councilor is implying that delaying goods is unwise as it may hurt their relations. The other councilor who mentions thousands losing their income also has a point, their situation is akin to a worldwide internet outage in our world.
Arcane has a habit of giving you partial information to make you think a certain way then fill in the details at a later time making it difficult to see the whole picture the first time, it gets more convoluted and hard to follow especially when the episodes are a week apart. The chat is dropping some important (and not important) details you missed that may help you get a better understanding of the situation.

    POTENTIAL TRIGGERS
The falling grenades in her little lair… Later, when she first tries to use the hex tech, we’re shown “flashbacks” to memories she doesn’t actually have, but her traumatized mind filled in the blanks, an unfortunate result of her attempts to understand how her first real success with an explosive had such disastrous results. All she really remembers is falling to the ground while her whole world fell to pieces-she saw the blue light and the fire, she heard the boom, and she heard things shattering and crumbling. Powder can’t stop going back to that moment, trying to fix it. Jinx knows there is no fixing it. Jinx knows everyone she cared for died that night, Powder also dying in some ways. Powder sometimes thinks the explosion should have killed her too. Jinx drops a grenade down that shaft, killing everyone again-Clagger, Milo, Vander, Powder, Vi-only survivors grieve. “There you go,” Jinx tells Powder, “you’re all dead.” Powder/Jinx hears Milo’s voice mocking her and Jinx drops another grenade. “Stay dead.” In the end, when Jinx has everyone at that table in the warehouse she blew apart, she actually says, “I thought I buried this place.” She says, “Nothing stays dead.” After Powder takes control at a critical moment, opening herself up to another devastating blow, Jinx decides she has to do something Powder never would, deliberately causing a level of destruction Powder caused by accident. No more guilt. No more free-fall. When she does this, no one will remember who she once was. Powder won’t suffer anymore. This explosion will kill her. Powder hears the call of the void, and Jinx keeps trying to launch her into it.

'GET JINXED' was - and still is - one of the most impactful music/visual presentations done by RIOT!
It served as the trailer to the character release of Jinx into League of Legends!
The character lore wasn't anything as elaborate as it appears to be these days, but still sufficient to give an understanding of the character in that particular season of the lore (yes, the lore changes from time to time 😢)..!

Idk if you still read comments on these videos, but an interesting theory I really appreciate is Jinx's tattoos. I would like to hear your thoughts on this. You mentioned her potentially punishing herself. In this season, her tattoos are not finished. Amongst the blue puffs of smoke, there will be pink bullets. Blue smoke for the monkey bomb that killed her friends and pink bullets for when she shot Silco to save Vi. It's almost like a "greatest hits" of her biggest failures. Like she needs to remind herself that she is a jinx.

Dam not even 20 minutes in and immediately a deep question lmao
"What legacy do you wanna leave behind?"
...Is it weird my answer would probably be 'nothing much'? Like.. i dont mind leaving some form of legacy.. but i'm also perfectly content to have lived a small happy life and die a small happy death.. as long as i made people smile or happy during my life and i'll leave my friends or family thinking of me fondly thats enough.. do we have to leave behind something big? Or something at all? Being an obscure background character that made even a few ppl happy sounds great enough to me😌❤
But maybe i'm just weird for thinking that😂😅
Anyhow i love how deep you're getting right off the bat XD its cool to hear this is becoming more mainstream!
(Welp imma continue with the video now hehe)

(Also great analysis once again on this eposode! They are getting longer and longer but also deeper each time. Love the diagrams you keep pulling up alongside some psychological standpoints. Really cool to see. Especially as i was in therapy once for a few years, and noticed that i had a lot of those 15 (or 7 shown) thinking patterns previously and my therapist also questioned me out of the circle thinking in the same way you were doing for an imaginary jinx. Its so weird and yet so cool seeing that my therapist used those tactics and i am now seeing what they might habe been for or that they were used in the first place.. good soup. Thank you for another great reaction(uωu 人)💕💕 now lets see you react to the music vid hehe
(P.s sorry for the many edits.. i normally try and only comment after watching.. but with these being so long my short term memory cannot keep up haha)
Edit 3: ok can i just say that i loved how you see silco as a father? Many reactors find their relationship creepy or sexual but no. Its more a father with a child thats mentally 12 year old. They are clingy and have less boundaries.
Loved your reaction to the 2 videos! Great insights! Thank you for this reaction~ see you in the next episode :)

35:00 I disagree with this. People feel too many emotions during any given period to describe them all succinctly and social awareness informs us that most situations are not a truly safe appropriate time for full exposition. Good, Fine, Meh, Okay, Not Great. These are all short-hand explanations that give a full overview of you mental state and your ability to engage in both conversation and activity. Think of it more of a rough plot of where you are on the Maslow's Hierarchy.
The question is essentially: "How emotionally, mentally, and physically capable are you of engaging in conversation, activity, or social events right now, and are you in particular need of some support or attention?
The answers, if truthful, are: Great=actualized, Meh/Okay=Safe but vulnerable, bad/awful/terrible=in danger/need of attention and help.
It's a super convenient, and I think extraordinarily helpful way of determining what roles and relationships we need to play together at this moment.

I like how Mel softens the other councilmember's "vinegar" comment. He's venal and only worried about his bottom line, but she's smart enough to realize that there are plenty of other people with jobs dependent on this trade, who would also suffer. Which will have all sorts of other bad consequences for topside and undercity, adding to the desperation that Silco has built much of his movement on. It's consistently smart that way.

FYI since you spoke about it, Netflix didn't create the record player opening for this show. It was a deliberate mcGuffin that Riot created while creating this show, because they had it in their minds 100% they would distribute this show through Netflix. It was literally the ONLY platform that could distribute the show WORLDWIDE (including China simulcast) all at the same time. They wanted everyone watching it at the same time, not divded by time zones.

Caitlyn has ZERO romantic interest in Jayce and the reverse is also likely true (he would have first met her when he was ~20 and she ~10). Her mother was not mad about them being friends / pseudo-siblings, she was mad that they were not 'behaving appropriately' (i.e. Jayce not letting her show him off / Caitlin not being in a proper profession rather than a mere enforcer / both of them 'goofing off').
The Firelights are what rose up out of the destruction of the Vander faction.
You make note of Caitlin's camera as a new thing, but there was a photograph of young Jayce and his dad in episode 3.
For all the things Silco does right with Jinx, there is an inherent problem in their relationship. They both have abandonment issues from the loss of their 'sibling', but they had fundamentally different coping mechanisms. Powder re-attached to Silco, just as she had previously attached to Vi after losing her parents. Silco, on the other hand, responded to his trauma by pushing everyone else away... they'll all betray him, he has to become what they fear. Silco made an exception, letting Jinx in because he could actually still empathize with her, but he's still a cold fish. He has spent years training himself to NOT show emotion... and there's Jinx snuggling up to him like a little girl, looking for a hug, a touch on the cheek. Some shred of PHYSICAL affection, which he just inherently can't give. He sees that she needs to be close to him, so he allows it, but he can't give her the kind of physical comfort that would be vastly more meaningful to her.
In the music video, the scenes of Powder and Violet play fighting with pillows and it evolving into arguing and then Violet walking away when she gets angry mirrors Powder's insecurities and the tragedy in episode 3. Also, the scene of Powder watching while two guys beat up Milo goes a long way towards explaining his animosity towards her ("stick with us, take a punch or two", "we could fill a damned library with all the things you HAVEN'T done").

One thing to notice that to me seems major. Notice Jinx's character model.
There is a distinct left/right split.
    - Her hair on the right side hangs reminiscent of Powder's while the left is radically different.
    - It is a bit hard to see, but Jinx's tattoos of smoke clouds are only on the right half of her body. Splitting the body in half. Not only that but the smoke is blue. Powder's color, and also the color of the smoke from a crystal explosion as seen in both Ep 1&3. It feels to my like she has a tattooed cry for help and forgiveness on her body.
    - Her fingernails are painted in alternating blue and red.
Maybe this is indicating that at least at the start Powder/Jinx are very much both present and battling.

    • @QatunQ
      @QatunQ ปีที่แล้ว

It's my understanding that her tattoos were more representative of the blue flare Vi gave her so she could call for help. So the tattoos are like you said a call for help.

Something I find interesting is that silco is referred to as a "villain." I don't think there are any villains in this show, just people doing what they feel is right. No one is just inherently Evil just people shaped by their environment.

Firstly, the firelight ARE on the side of the lanes, moreso than either the enforcers or silco. Silco's enterprise is clearly too much to be healthy for the lanes.
One of the first things I always notice about episodes 4 and 5 are just how close the writers show us that Jinx and silco's relationship has gotten. When powder was younger she never got that much attention from vander even, most of vander's parenting to me seems was spent on vi with her boxing and everything else. Where vander never fostered powder's innate abilities (her impeccable aim and knowledge of gadgetry), silco encouraged her to shine and it did ultimately allow her to grow in my opinion. I think back to like, vander totally could have had powder helping out benzo's knick knack shop with little man, or even used his connections with grayson in piltover to get powder formal marksmanship training or something.
I think she was overly dependent on vi when she was younger because she didn't have a parent figure really besides vi, and it caused the cut to be wayyy too deep when that relationship was wounded but finally when Silco came around she was able to be as dependent as before, but in a more fatherly relationship like this that kind of dependence is okay?
Edit: I think it's interesting how Vi went from caring for powder more than anything, to attaching to another fine marskman in caitlyn when she's away from powder.
