  • Bridge cameras feature a high end "all in one" zoom lens. big image sensor, multiple recording options and compact size. The Lumix FZ1000 and Sony RX100 M3 (sometimes called Mark 3) are the top of the game for each company in this market. Although similar in many ways from 20 MP images, 1" sensor and price, the Lumix carries a 16X f2.8 zoom lens and 4K video, while the Sony has super fast f1.8 3x lens and excellent photo/video capture in a pocket size camera. Which is best for you? Check out real comparisons in demanding shots with these two great units.

I went for the FZ1000 and I am really stunned about the quality this camera produces straight out of the camera. It's also very good for zoomed in pictures/video. Glad it has a mic in and I don't find it a problem that this camera does not have a headphone -out really.

Hello, really enjoyed your comparison review of these two cameras. I'm leaning towards the Lumix for the optical focal length performance in low light (photos and video). However part 2 of your review gave me pause. Is that dome viewed from the FZ1000 at 400mm full optical range or is the digital zoom applied? Thanks in advance!

Both cameras are actually in their wide angle mode, but its cropped down tightly to exaggerate any imperfections. So no digital zoom. The larger Lumix size helps low light stabilization too.I don't get into a lot of the ergonomics and handling of these cameras as that is fairly subjective, but I find the layout on the Sony isn't as logical or easy to access. The physically larger Lumix has more places to put dedicated buttons, and there is less menu diving for normal settings.

Man...the time, dedication and skills need for this video are enormous.Hats off, sir.Now...if only I could decide what to do, as I am selling my Sony Nex C3 with 18-55 to a friend...it is a great casual camera, for street photography, occasional landscape quick point and shoots when cycling - I stop, point and shoot and go on.I still wonder how much of photo quality and specially high iso am I sacrificing, if I get the Panasonic...or the Nex 6, or A6000.Normally, I auto-tone photos in lightroom, apply sharpness to the limit ( when not shot in high ISO )...I am still a beginner in lightroom.

Just came across this video. Thanks for posting it. Great work. I own and enjoy using the excellent FZ1000. I have used it under all manner of conditions - including media calls in dark theaters. Some of the images I have taken with this camera have been published and exhibited in galleries.

Thanks for your comments. I have travelled a lot with the FZ1000 and love its image quality. But I have had occasions where the focus wouldn't work and the zoom function sounded like it had skipped a cog. Thank goodness for iPhone cameras to do a quick sub. That problem has passed but now I get occasional back display shut off with no display in the eyepiece. What's with that? Maybe a bit of QC issues creeping in when they tried to keep the price down.

+NorthOlbo Thanks for the reply and for your comments. I, too, experienced a complete shut down of the camera one afternoon while shooting. I pulled out the battery, re-inserted it, and all was well. I continue in vain to pray for the perfect camera. Alas. I have been recently using Nikon's Coolpix P7800 and have obtained excellent results with it. It's small, fits in a shoulder bag, and has great output with its 28-200 f2.0 lens. If I do come across the "perfect" camera, I will let you know. Take care.

Hello there. The lack of consistent focusing in the FZ1000... can´t have that when filming rugby matches, Have any of you experienced same thing with FZ300? I really don´t want a interchangeable lens camera but one with fixed lens with zoom of at least 16x which I think is the FZ1000 but that problem with focusing during video...not the 1st time I see this ... don´t want it for that... that´s like my number 1 priority, I think it´s called continous auto focus. And if it also shuts down, oh no. Thanks you guys, for the vid and the comments. I wonder what am I gonna end up with ...

Hi, thanks for taking the time to prepare this very useful comparison between the RX100 M3 and the FZ1000.
I own the RX100 M1 and it has been a great camera. I use it on a spotting scope for bird photography and for landscape photography when hill walking.
I have recently purchased a 4K laptop and 4K TV. This has taken the RX100 photos into a new dimension.
I have been waiting for a 4K compact camera to replace the RX100 but nothing has come onto the market. I feel that the FZ1000 will be a good complimentary camera for the RX100 and the zoom with image grabbing from 4K footage is the way to go.
Just one point, I have seen mention that the zoom of the FZ1000 is not smooth, your footage of the FZ1000 in zoom mode seems smooth enough, is this an issue ?
Again, many thanks for the effort you have put into this superb review. I think the FZ1000 will be my next step.
4K has transformed the way to view photographs and video......astonishing technology.

Thanks for the feedback. The ring on the zoom lens on the FZ1000 can be set for zoom control instead of the thumb switch by the shutter button. I don't do this as I like to use the ring for manual focus control instead. However, if it is in zoom mode it can be set to "stop" at several preset zoom distances. This may make the zoom not feel smooth. One thing the RX100M3 does is slow the zoom speed down in video mode, it seems much smoother this way, a nice feature. I would use the FZ1000 in conventional video in 1080p mode and switch to 4K for scenes that I may want to pull photos out, like high speed action or long distance shots that may be cropped down. 4K are such huge files that using them for everything will require multi TB storage and recent model computers to edit them. That said, they are outstanding visually and look amazing on the new 4K Tvs.
