- This is the full 40 minute classic freestyle session by Canibus, DMX & N.O.R.E. on Funkmaster Flex in 1998. I'm glad I kept the tape going at the end because you get to hear DMX give Canibus props, discuss working together, and then you get to hear who they chose to shout out 20 years ago, who was calling in, etc. I miss this era.

But then X mightve pulled out his best rhymes and put on that crazy energy and flow, and honestly it wouldn't matter that Pun was being more lyrical. X is severely underrated
I felt the same way when they had this session. I literally had to throw my bullshit raps in the garbage and start over when Canibus dropped these verses. Truth be told though, he wasn't goin off the top. None of 'em did. It was all verses from their first albums, mixtape freestyles, featured verses, etc. At the time, most of it was new/unreleased material, but they were all writtens. The first few bars Bis spit were off the top, but that's about it. He's technical though, no question.
Yeah, that's how it usually is. People think freestyles are all totally improvised and they're usually not. I think Proof was particularly good at doing everything off the top. But it's not that common.

Donald Mokgale when it was live, the majority was the first time Canibus ever spit it. No one heard that heat before. This is also when X sold me and made me say I'm definitely gonna cop his album now. Canibus shined the hardest by far though.

Bis was on a level on his own. Had he been seen as the victor vs. LL, he never ends up going crazy, depressed, joining the military, beefing with Eminem. He didn't have enough clout yet to even get at LL... Had they put those same bars down in the golden era 10 years earlier, Bis would be a cultural icon. But the legend of LL was too big, even though Bis had one of the best diss songs of all time. But, all that aside, everyone was scared of Canibus. Dude says I can run full speed without bending my knees lol.

I'll let everyone else pass, but K Rino is more diverse, and uses his vocabulary to tell stories with complex out of this world wordplay and schemes. Canibus even said that K Rino made him work harder to keep up with him in the booth. I may come off as biased, and I apologize for that but you can point to any Canibus joint, and I can point to a K joint that is lyrically equal or better than that Bis track.

Canibus first verse was fire for me. The DJ mixing the first beat needs major props. That's not the natural flow of the track and the DJ's timing in scratching it to the break was perfect each time did it. Really allowed them flow on it.

DMX had swizz n dame grease and ruff ryders NORE had Pharrell and the Neptunes before any rapper then so he thought he was the shit on this cause he had hits at the time..
dmx had more of a superstar appeal and related more to the people
