I know that Ichigo is usually criticized in the internet that: "Ichigo boring and uninteresting protagonist. Luffy, Naruto even Eren is better", but I completely disagree. I know that many people really like Naruto, Luffy, Asta and other eternally cheerful and positive heroes, but with Ichigo the situation is different. I like the fact that Ichigo is more down-to-earth and does not seek some lofty goal. He has one desire in life - to protect his friends because of what he himself went through and couldn't protect his mother. I understand that few people like this, but I think this is what makes him stand out. That is, you can empathize with him more and understand his problems. He is essentially an ordinary human boy with his own problems, traumas and experiences, which brings the reader/viewer closer when he reads manga or watches anime and understands who Ichigo is and why he behaves this way. I myself recently got acquainted with Bleach and I was surprised how diametrically opposed the opinion was from what I heard on the Internet and what was said about Bleach and in particular about the main character. Therefore, Bleach stands out for me in the big three and is one of my favorite shonen, and Ichigo is one of my favorite shonen protagonists. Tbh Ichigo can be a bit bland in comparison to other MCs. He is mostly the straight man to other weird people he know. He doesn't have some weird traits like eating so much or being dumb. So I can see people having less interest in the character. But I do agree he is well written. 2 underrated things I will always give Kubo flowers for, are Ichigo's character journey and cohesive themes and narrative from start to finish(even if they aren't super grand).
He has weird quicks tho, he is thugish, he doesn't care about other ppl opinion or authority and he is just as much of a sadist as hollow!ichigo/true!zangetsu, as it can be seen by how in the first chapter he break the pavement with some irrespectful dude's face. He can be rather petty as well, usually in fights when he is "humiliated" he does the same to the opponent later on. For example, Aizen blocked zangetsu with no injury, Ichigo proceeded to do the same thing later on. He is rather mean spirited at the best of times.
@diablo.the.cheater this is what makes him a good written character and relatable. He has flaws😂 kinda dont see the reason you commented this tho.. as if your trying really really hard to make ichigo seem like a bad written character.
You're right. Videos like these are, in fact, my thing 😁 Love this analysis mate. Bleach always seemed the more mature series from the get-go out of the Big 3, and that was apparent in the way Ichigo behaved compared to Naruto and Luffy in each one's early seasons.
I’m glad you enjoyed it, and Absolutely! I know people who never even got into Bleach, but were captivated by how unique of a character Ichigo actually is when compared to a lot of other MCs out there. He’s like everyone’s older brother! 😁
Yeah I mean he self actualized as a character and that gave him access to all his power but he isn't even remotely close to reaching his peak combat power. Like in his fight against Yhwach he had to use his attacks to give his abilities a jump start. And that isn't even considering all the other avenues for power he still has left to learn. Like he still can learn kido to supplement his rather straightforward abilities, he may or may not be able to do the equivalent of a resurreccion though that is rather unlikely since that is probably the hollow equivalent of shikai and bankai so might already have it technically, and his quincy abilities are entirely untapped, like he does perform some during combat but its more so an instinctive use of the basics rather than an actual mastery and who knows what he might be able to do if he could actually pull on reishi like a quincy consciously to further boost his power. And finally his fullbring abilities are basically not developed at all and training those would allow him to be a formidable foe even in his human body. And that is just what I can immediately think of as relatively low hanging fruit.
Great video. One cool fact is Ichigo maybe unconscious takes white moveset without the ferocity. Swinging the blade by the cloth, black getsuga white did it first, using two getsuga to trap opponent by sending one and getting behind to send another point blank.
Don't think it is unconsciously. It is White/Zangetsu teaching Ichigo how to use his powers so of course he'll pick up on them and imitate them when he sees a way to further boost his combat capabilities.
Not sure if it was mostly for its edginess but it’s FS the most dunked on of the 3. It’s generally considered the bronze medal and people often try to remove it from “Big 3” status and replace it with another title (blasphemy of the highest order).
@@RecoveringElitistTrying to remove Bleach from the Big 3 is impossible why can't people understand that The Big 3 will always be Naruto Bleach and One Piece trying to discard Bleach is straight up impossible
I'd suggest giving the manga a go, its a lot more concise and clear than the filler plagued anime and I think the format also helps with noticing those details, especially since Kubo doesn't really draw much in the way of details unless it is important making the focus automatically shift to what is important
If there's one thing I always appreciated about Bleach, it was Ichigo. I had a hard time getting through some of the later stuff in Bleach, but I feel like my biggest issue with a lot of the later fights was the big bads of every arc. Feels like Ichigo always got the "Immortal god-like enemy" that required almost killing himself to beat or the "paper skin and glass bones enemy" that he wiped the floor with 2 seconds into every fight.
I get what you mean. I feel like a lot of older shonen like DBZ do this and it’s definitely not the most interesting direction to take.. That said, i was able to enjoy a good amount of them as well like the Grimjow encounters. TYBW is doing a lot better with the fights as well i think.
My favorite thing about Ichigo (and bleach) is that Ichigo is “the strongest” from the very beginning; when looked at with current hindsight. He could’ve always been true Shikai level from the beginning if he accepted himself and learned self actualization. It’s just peak man Edit: This is his perfect parallel to Kenpachi too. Since both of them reach their actual strength and potential they had the entire series once they learn about themselves in TYBW. Even more peak.
@ that is so insane… wait. Is Ywach the release command for his sword? I know it’s always released but would that be the way to have it go from a released to the current state
The ending of TYBW is hazy to me so i can't remember exactly how it goes, but i think something similar happens towards the end 🤔 Definitely gonna have to check that out.
I really only began to understand how deep Bleach is when I started looking into Buddhism. Once I started making the connections between them, the story of Bleach took on entirely new dimensions for me. The way that the names of the bankai were basically the Buddhist true names of their wielders, similar to how Sun Wukong’s Buddhist name was The Victorious Fighting Buddha, I started trying to find the translations of the bankai’s names to understand the characters better. Now if only I could find translations for the light novels…
Also even without the connection to Buddhism you can see the meaning of Shikai and Bankai in most characters. Shikai is a reflection of how the perceive themselves/want to be and how they present themselves to others. Bankai on the other hand is who they really are. The most obvious example is Soifon, her Shikai is a silent and sneaky two hit kill weapon like the assassin she is/wants to be, her Bankai is a one hit kill but it is flashy and loud attracting attention showing how she wants Yoruichis attention and acknowledgement Another easy one is Ichigo, his false Shikai and Bankai simply represent his straightforward nature by being simple power increases. What you see is what you get, he doesn't really put on appearances. When he gets his true Shikai it still is a very straightforward weapon but now representing Ichigos understanding of his split origins, with one sword being the sheath to the other and unleashing the most power when used in tandem with each other (Getsuga Jujisho). We sadly don't know much about his Bankai but the few things we do know all fit with the theme of being straightforward and his origins. It is a blade in a white sheath which when it was shattered by Yhwach got absorbed into the blade symbolizing the fusion and understanding of his origins giving him the power to strike down his foe. And the shape of said blade is the very first false Shikai he had when he first set out to regain his powers in order to protect his friends showing how his core never changed and also that it has been laid bare for all to see from the very beginning.
Much respect, I’m glad you appreciated the video! I’m definitely going to come back around for more Bleach content soon. With the Blood War still airing there’s going to be a lot of new info I’m excited for on the Soul King… 👀
Before I watch the video - yes!! He is realistically written. Who in their right mind would want the kind of burden he has, yet he does what he does to protect the people he loves, which would be a realistic motivation for most people. In the mean time he realizes he actually enjoys fighting, but tries to supress this because how can you enjoy fighting someone who is trying to hurt your loved ones? And the depressive periods, when he shuts out are written so well. I didn't watch One Piece, but I love Naruto. I love his hope and kindess even though he did not get any growing up, but he a little exagerated. Ichigo is just a good guy - well-mannered, well-raised, traumatized but still a good guy. Very emotionally inteligent, willing to step up but knowing when to back down. Also fear, he feals fear! He basically feels the full scope of human emotions and that makes him relatable. Love him!
Lmao did you just give my vid a preview summary? You seriously hit basically all the major points i touched on. 👏🏿 Thank you for sharing your thoughts, it's really cool seeing so many ppl resonate with what Bleach brought to the table. I Hope you found the vid entertaining! 😁
My goat is fullbring arc. Its that's my favorite I think it's much better than social Society Arc. But what I don't understand is everyone loves soul Society Arc but will then call everything at that and ass pulls. But within thia fight ita sets up EVERY PLOT POINT!!!
@@RecoveringElitist I'm 31 yrs old and late to the game of anime/manga. So ichigo being an older brother like I am and wants to protect his family and friends..and on top of that ichigo has a traumatic past and carried it around everywhere..until he realized who, what, how and where he comes from and by doing this is free from the past. Like I did. So Fullbring had that and so I fell in love with it. So that'd why I connect with it more then SS.
You are not lying! Now that I’m in my personal development arc i see so much more of myself in Ichigo. Fullbring arc had a lot to do with processing grief and finding a way forward, a common theme amongst all the fullbringers. The difference is that Ichigo chose to make peace with the choices that brought him to where he was in life, but Ginjo and the rest were basically stuck in arrested development because they couldn’t achieve that level of acceptance. Tsukishima being able to overwrite ppl’s memories is a HUGE example of this.
Little foreshadowing he says. There is so much. For example in the fight you just discussed he wasn't just saved by his hollow, OMZ also helped save him, he used the shadows to pull Ichigo into his inner world and used Blut Vene to stop Ichigos bleeding to stop him from dying and let him keep fighting. Also it is false that Ichigo never uses Whites techniques. He does the spinny thing with his sword when saving Rukia and also only uses Getsuga Tensho with his Bankai after White showed him how to do so and I'm pretty sure there are more examples that I can't think of right now.
8:35 - But White was the first to use Getsuga while in Bankai. Ichigo would use this in almost every fight he uses his Bankai after White used this combo against Byakuya. White even taunts him a few times, saying that he only imitated his technique.
I appreciate how chill you guys have all been with pointing out anything i may have gotten wrong/inaccurate. Someone else also pointed out a different technique he learned from White as well, but the way I've always understood it was that the Getsuga was an Old Man Zangetsu technique, not White's. I think it was in his Byakuya fight where he says Zangetsu only taught him the Getsuga. It's worth a double check though so I'll look into it 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿
A few things here. I never thought about Ichigo and Kenpachi being so close ( Like Brothers) But it does kinda make sense because in reality Kenpachi has the same issue as Ichigo does. He has suppressed himself and his greatest enemy is always himself. Also, something else interesting to note is that saying Kenpachi and Ichigo are similar is not cap... remember what Grimmjow said to Ichigo? In the end he never JUST wanted to save inoue... he also craved battle. The only error in this video is when it is stated that Ichigo never learns any techniques from white. He definitely learned a move and a combo from him. Charging a getsuga and firing it point blank is something he learned from White
A video on Julius and Lucius would be pretty cool tbh! I do want to see more of his (their?) backstory to fill in some gaps first though. I feel like there’s still more info for Tabata to drop on ALL the Zogratis siblings and I’m thinking it’ll be a bombshell 👀. Im also hoping the other 3 make a reappearance during the final battle as well to help bring it all together. The Christmas chapter was great so I’m expecting nothing but heat from now on! 🔥🔥🔥

@@RecoveringElitist there’s a theory that is basically confirmed atp that throughout the Lucifer fight Lucius was rewinding time. The clock tower in the Spade kingdom kept fluctuating. And also when Asta and Liebe are sitting on the clock it starts moving
@@RecoveringElitist I also especially like the part that Julius said that time magic has an open grimoire but that’s not true, and when Lucius appears his grimoire closes. Because the spell is done. Tabata is one of the best writers in new gen anime I fully believe.
The common "Ichigo has no goals." He does, they just have nothing to do with the story. It's like watching a horror movie and complaining about a lack of the protagonist's marital problems or some random shit.
Ichigo to me was more relatable so everyone trying find themselves. I did like he don't have a goal like Naruto and Luffy made me don't like them as much. When my friend made me watch Bleach that only anime I watch 5 times over. The main cast and side was best to my eyes. So to me Bleach was my favorite show of the big 3. One piece and Naruto were good. I was a big Naruto fan boy but now I am Bleach fan boy. Anyways BAN KAI!
It’s so obvious but i never put that together for myself before. You’re completely right. I’m very introspective and out of the 3, Ichigo is the only one i can relate to on that level. Maybe that’s what really drew me in
@RecoveringElitist Yeah that why a lot of people like Coyote Starrk it like same reason. And other amazing side cast. Hopefully we get a hell arc and maybe see returing characters maybe espadas and Sternritter's joining forces duo how we got Grimmjow in TYBW.
Getting the Hell arc animated would be my dream come true. I also have extremely hogh hopes for Burn The Witch since he’s supposedly giving us a full series if I’m remembering correctly
You know one piece was not that popular in the early 2000s outside of Japan. It was really just bleach and Naruto people talked about until the 2010s happened. I kind of wish we could go back to that. On the fact that bleaches popularity on adult swim was monumental wasn’t until TH-camrs like super eyepatch Will and a bunch of people who tried to copy came along that bleach it never stopped being popular, especially in Japan.
Lmao I’ll stand on it! 😤 Luffy IS amazingly written in his own right, but i feel that the thematic tie-ins between Ichigo and the world of Bleach make it unique across the three series. Oda’s always playing the long game though so who knows what I’ll think by the end of the series 🤷🏿♂️
@@Fw_VergilPlenty of people have already done analysis videos on Luffy's character. You could just go do that instead of asking me to detail 1000 chapters worth of character writing here in the comment section. lul.
It’s crazy how ichigo gets slander for stuff other main characters get praised, like not being the stereotypical loud big dreams archetype, he’s more quiet reserve get the job done guy has a present family he’s good at school he’s not a outcast, and struggles a lot with mental battles, but somehow his character gets reduce to ah he’s just boring, I guess the average shonen brain struggles with thinner details and subtle development, fly over their heads.
The reason why Bleach is not so well written is because Kubo focuses too much on making Ichigo a great character. Unlike one piece and Naruto, where too many characters (sasuke, zoro, sanji) get a lot of shine as well. By focusing on writing one great, memorable character, you tend to neglect the story and other characters.
I mean Kubo wrote other great characters: Rukia, Renji, Zaraki, Byakuya, Grimmjow, Ulquiorra, Nnoitra, Uryu, Jugram, Aizen, Gin. Ichigo might be the best written but Kubo didn't simply gave no focus to other characters. You used Naruto as an example when jalf the characters we are introduced to be ome irrelevant after the first part of the story is complete and they have a barely meaningful character arc. Bleach has reasons for not being greatly written, but character focus is not one of them
Ichigo literally just wants to save everyone. He has one goal throughout the entire show. " I gotta save my friends" It's not that deep. Humans have been writing stories for thousands of years, his character motivations are mediocre, at best.
I would prefer to say grounded rather than mediocre, personally. The death of Ichigo's mother had a huge impact on him. She died because of him, no way around it. Because of that, he wants to be able to protect those around him with his own two hands. His goals are to keep his friends and family safe. I'd hardly call that mediocre. Less exciting or ambitious, fair but but it's equally as inspiring to tons of Bleach fans :)
The only thing this video misses is his inner monologue before Mugetsu. That is where he actually accepts White as his own power hence no hollow mask past that point as they were one to begin with. The mask was just an extension of Ichigo's aversion towards his inner instincts.
I was thinking of including that as well but i had to start cutting stuff out cuz the video length was starting to get away from me lol, but I'm glad you pointed that out. The journey to Ichigo's acceptance of white could be it's own video topic alone 😂
Y can do 100 more video about this and it will never change a thing ichigo/bleach is worst story/character and everything else than the other tow the only thing bleach comes close to even compar it to the other tow is combat and most people will still give that to naruto
Lol still my favorite of the big 3 growing up 😁🤷🏿♂️ The new TYBW anime only makes me love it even more tbh, but it’s fair that you have that opinion as well.
The bar is low when you compare it to shows like dragon ball z, terrible writing, one dimensional characters, terrible fight choreography, terrible power scaling, tons of continuity errors, boring story
This is probably a big reason why I gravitated to it so strongly when i did. I was ready for a more complex story and Bleach is all that and more. Lol i got more than i bargained for 😂
Ichigo is easily the best protagonist of most series and without question blows the likes of Naruto, Luffy, Eren, etc. out of the water in how well written he is. Hell, Bleach as a series is better written than the other two series in its Big 3, especially compared to the disposable popcorn trash One Piece, that only maintains popularity by being generic enough to have a wide appeal despite its lackluster writing.
I feel like bleach really leans into the main character and getting over their emotional/spiritual struggles compared to the others in the big three or any other story I can think of really.
@@interestingname9275 that's true they did it early in the series I think with his mom. The same with Naruto . Luffy is different 🤣 his character was getting better throughout the series

But I do agree he is well written. 2 underrated things I will always give Kubo flowers for, are Ichigo's character journey and cohesive themes and narrative from start to finish(even if they aren't super grand).
Excellently put! 👏🏿
He has flaws😂 kinda dont see the reason you commented this tho.. as if your trying really really hard to make ichigo seem like a bad written character.
people confuse being loud vs being bland, at least we can know ichigo as a charcter wont get flanderized like goku did like naruto did
@@diablo.the.cheater He even turned around and used the theme music stopping move on Aizen in their rematch
You're right. Videos like these are, in fact, my thing 😁
Love this analysis mate.
@@RecoveringElitist Yep.
And you should make more Bleach videos, i cant wait to hear more from you. 👍
Even after end of tybw ichigo still didn't realize his true power, maybe all of you too.
K 👍🏿
White is Ichigo but uncensored
Don't think it is unconsciously. It is White/Zangetsu teaching Ichigo how to use his powers so of course he'll pick up on them and imitate them when he sees a way to further boost his combat capabilities.
Great video and any love for Bleach gets my support 100%
Much respect my guy! Thanks for the support mi G 👊🏿
Ngl, I never heard anyone dunk on bleach for being edgy. Did people really used to say that?
Not sure if it was mostly for its edginess but it’s FS the most dunked on of the 3. It’s generally considered the bronze medal and people often try to remove it from “Big 3” status and replace it with another title (blasphemy of the highest order).
@@RecoveringElitistTrying to remove Bleach from the Big 3 is impossible why can't people understand that The Big 3 will always be Naruto Bleach and One Piece trying to discard Bleach is straight up impossible
And we will NEVER let it slide 😤😤😤
@@nancylynnpeter8013 exactly, like I don't like Naruto but I'm not gonna say it's not in the big 3 just cos of that lol
BRO... I MISSED SO MUCH!!!!
Hahahaha!! this was the comment I was waiting for most lol.
that second run through of the series hit different frfr..
“White’s” name is also Zangetsu. He even says it to Ichigo in the inner world while he’s training him.
My favorite thing about Ichigo (and bleach) is that Ichigo is “the strongest” from the very beginning; when looked at with current hindsight. He could’ve always been true Shikai level from the beginning if he accepted himself and learned self actualization.
It’s just peak man
Edit:
This is his perfect parallel to Kenpachi too. Since both of them reach their actual strength and potential they had the entire series once they learn about themselves in TYBW.
Even more peak.
💯💯💯
This is largely why Ichibei wouldn't let Old Man Zangetsu reveal his true name.
@@RecoveringElitist the absurdity that would’ve been End of Series Ichigo running around Kurokuro town against monster of the week hollows
He woulda had his bankai before his shikai. It'd been utter chaos 💀💀💀
@ that is so insane… wait.
Is Ywach the release command for his sword? I know it’s always released but would that be the way to have it go from a released to the current state
The ending of TYBW is hazy to me so i can't remember exactly how it goes, but i think something similar happens towards the end 🤔
Definitely gonna have to check that out.
Finished video and subscribed hell yea
I really only began to understand how deep Bleach is when I started looking into Buddhism. Once I started making the connections between them, the story of Bleach took on entirely new dimensions for me. The way that the names of the bankai were basically the Buddhist true names of their wielders, similar to how Sun Wukong’s Buddhist name was The Victorious Fighting Buddha, I started trying to find the translations of the bankai’s names to understand the characters better. Now if only I could find translations for the light novels…
That's extremely cool. I knew there was some significance to the names but i had no idea about all this. 😯
Also even without the connection to Buddhism you can see the meaning of Shikai and Bankai in most characters. Shikai is a reflection of how the perceive themselves/want to be and how they present themselves to others. Bankai on the other hand is who they really are.
The most obvious example is Soifon, her Shikai is a silent and sneaky two hit kill weapon like the assassin she is/wants to be, her Bankai is a one hit kill but it is flashy and loud attracting attention showing how she wants Yoruichis attention and acknowledgement
Another easy one is Ichigo, his false Shikai and Bankai simply represent his straightforward nature by being simple power increases.

I cam around to the fullbring arc. i didn't like it when i read it at first but it grew on me a lot

Completely missed that, thanks for pointing it out! Thanks for watching and for the comment, i really appreciate it
I was wondering if you were ever going to do a video on Lucius Zogratis.
By the way a great video. I love Bleach and it’s great to see appreciation for it. I’m also very excited to see your opinion on the Lucius reveal because I feel that foreshadowing with Julius was top class
Thanks a lot for the kind words! Im glad you liked it. I know I haven’t shown BC a lot of love lately but when i do return to it, it’s absolutely going to be worth it. Thanks again for the support, and I hope you enjoy what I’ve got in the interim. 🙏🏿
The simplicity is what draws me to him as an MC. I’ve always found more down-to-earth goals easier to relate to.

@@RecoveringElitist The US justice system in a nutshell.

Ichigo is definitely a well written character. But being better written than Luffy is a stretch.
Lmao I’ll stand on it! 😤
Luffy IS amazingly written in his own right, but i feel that the thematic tie-ins between Ichigo and the world of Bleach make it unique across the three series. Oda’s always playing the long game though so who knows what I’ll think by the end of the series 🤷🏿♂️
Not really a stretch let’s be honest ichigos character is a lot more deeper than luffys he’s just a slightly better written version of goku
@@Fw_VergilThats not actually true but sure thing man. lol.
@@emperorluffy6001 prove me wrong then
@@Fw_VergilPlenty of people have already done analysis videos on Luffy's character. You could just go do that instead of asking me to detail 1000 chapters worth of character writing here in the comment section. lul.
Easily the best of the big 3
This is fair. There are a ton of characters i would have liked to see more. TYBW is addressing what the manga lacked in that regard, but still.
Lol still my favorite of the big 3 growing up 😁🤷🏿♂️
The new TYBW anime only makes me love it even more tbh, but it’s fair that you have that opinion as well.
Fk midchigo he could never compare to yuji GOATadori
Both are great to me! 😊
You're aware that yuji is literally inspired by ichigo, right?
Wait, i love One Piece too 😭
Idk man for me, bleach is the worst in the big 3 in story and writing. Ichigo is ok written for me. That doesn't mean he's a bad Mc tho
That’s fair.
