  • This Weller WLC100 soldering iron station review shows the benefits of the budget friendly unit. This is not the best soldering iron available, but it has all of the features that I need to get the job done without the extra cost. Check out the website for links and more info. Thanks!

    You can't go wrong with Weller! I was considering this station and you may have tipped the scales for me. The breadboard tip is an added bonus in this video. It's an obvious fix that we all know may not seem as obvious in the moment. You earned a new sub :) Very helpful video!

    Wait till you try out a good, modern temperature-controlled (not power-controlled) soldering station. You'll never want to go back. (Better stations also have better selections of tips, including the drag soldering tips that I also find very useful for other things.)
    Also, you should invest in some thinner solder. On those headers, nearly every joint has too much solder, which is incredibly easy to do with thicker solder and the ridiculously thin solder pads on so many Chinese PCBs. (I remain baffled at why they do that, when there's plenty of space for larger pads.)

      do you have any suggestions for a grounded soldering iron with temp control under $100?

    • @tookitogo
      @tookitogo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@jaketwilcox13 In terms of name brands, that leaves pretty much only the Hakko FX-888D, which is a perfectly fine basic soldering station. IMHO, though, the sweet spot for value is the roughly $250 Pace ADS200.

    I will agree, I’ve had this particular soldering iron for about a year now and it works really well. It’s a soldering iron. My only complaint is where the soldering iron holder, the hot coiled steel thing, that attaches to the plastic base loves to pop out and fall in my lap and burn my crotch. Is there a secret to getting that soldering iron holder in there a little more securely? What am I doing wrong?

    Is there any temperature reference for each setting it has? (i.e. When it is set to 3 = is it around 300 degrees??) Does it come with a chart or anything to help you figure that out? Thanks for any help. New to soldering and I would like to upgrade my iron, this is just the only confusing thing about this iron to me.

    Hey there. Very helpful video. I'm curious about the temp control knob. Can you explain when you might use the "1" setting verses the "5" setting, when it comes to various projects and applications?

    I've got one and I love it. My stem is discolored though. The first job I did with it, I had it set on 40 watts. Has anyone else had this happen?

      When is new the iron tip you cover it with solder to tin the nose that process you need to do it each time you solder when you start also when you finish because iron tip will oxidize if its hasnt got solder.

    Thanks for this review, very helpful. I wonder, if I had 2x the budget of this WLC-100, what would you suggest as being of good value?

    Does setting the temp at 3.5 on the station essentially make it a 25w iron?

  • @SDsailor7

    What I would like to know is what are the actual temperatures on the different settings? That is important to know.
    Does anyone know the temperatures?
    Thank you

    I have the same Weller unit but mine refuses to heat up when connected to the rheostat. The soldering iron works fine by itself...any idea what is wrong?

  • @JeffLewistennis

    Do you have to “tin” the tip of the iron before you use it?

  • @dodgydruid

    It seems this was made for different brands as its the same as my Katsu and a friend has this under the Vastar brand, exact same save a couple cosmetic differences on the dial plate.

    • @randomaxe662
      @randomaxe662 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Vastar and many more stations are similar, but have at least one huge difference - those irons are wired into the station. The Weller soldering iron plugs into the station via electric outlet. So the soldering iron can be used independent of the station, and likewise, a different soldering iron can be used with the station.

    Cool. I've bought a new soldering station, my new other favorite tool (the other is my General digital caliper), an upgrade when it comes to soldering from my butane powered Iroda (I've been using it for almost 30 years but have run through 3 of the same model, essentially, the basic one, the affordable one) which I will use for portable jobs (on the roof, outdoors, etc.) to solder (the basic tip is just conical and the bevel tip is expensive) but less of soldering and more on using its blowtorch, hot knife and heat gun, all as a portable tool.
    God bless, Rev. 21:4

    • @DoctorThe113
      @DoctorThe113 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It happened to me once. Prolly the nichrome wire broke due to oxidation. Maybe rust?
      You should check the resistance of the heating element. Don't worry it's quite normal for older style irons.
      That's I will buy a quicko or ksger station sooner or later.

    • @tookitogo
      @tookitogo 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is not. The tip isn't grounded. The iron is just a regular iron that plugs into the side with a regular 2-prong US AC plug/

    If you don't have the money for a good modern temperature-controlled soldering station, this is great. Unfortunately, Weller has discontinued it In its place is the WLSK30 and WLSK80. These do 5-30 watts and 20-80 watts respectively. The irons are chunky and the holder is backwards from just about every other holder that anyone else makes. In other words, safety hazard.
    If you're lucky, you may be able to find one as new-old-stock. They also can be found used at places like eBay.
    For a station that costs less than $100, the WLC-100 is perfect. Weller! Please bring back this design!!!

  • @konstantinNeo

    Gosh I am triggered with Weller website.
    Cant believe they cannot update their web pages with full information about which tips fit what irons. If you do not know before hand you will have hard time figuring out. Hey Weller? How hard is it to put full info in your web page? "Related products" tab in the bottom, what is it for? Jeez.
    The ET(a,b,c,d) tips page, wont say no info about were they fit.
    I have an older blue handle 25w iron with bad tip, its still works just need a tip.

    weller are total crap...bought an expensive 1 a long time ago and it died after a week....bought another it didnt get hot enough.....many years later bought thier 40 watt
    " heavy duty" and it only worked if you pulled the trigger ( annoying) , and between trigger pulls it would cool off again.....never buy a weller...never...nissan cars also, warranties hassle
