Binging different videos on cat and dog introductions in preparation for getting a puppy this spring. It's always so lovely to see dog lovers advocate for the safety and happiness of not only the dogs but also the cats. As much as I'm buzzing to bring home a puppy, I also want to do my level best to make sure that my resident cat still feels safe and content in her haven.

Had one English Mastiff that the cats adored. My rottie mix gets his backside slapped just for breathing to close to the cat. Some dogs got it. Some dogs don't. Good to see you guys teaming up today.

Owned GSD's for 30 years and good to know my method is the recommended one. A tin of tuna and a worn-out pup. The only thing I have found is that all the pups hate that the cat is allowed on the sofa and they are not. The first two months, pups are given a bed on the floor next to the sofa - to manage play and bite control (gs pups are land sharks). Learning that play happens when I am on the floor and not the sofa helps - plus learning on/off command - via using a plastic container, along with the usual sit etc. By the time they are allowed on the sofa - they know it is a place to be quiet and not jump all over. But, boy do I have to manage the fuss over why the cat is okay up there - you can see their little brain ticking over - 'mom that's not fair!'

Omg I’ve got a nervous cat that I need to introduce to a GSP pup who is a velociraptor sometimes (working on this) any tips dear god let me know on how to introduce them! What’s this about Tuna?? She has a stair-gate over the bedroom that’s her realm and she comes out when he’s crated and pads about so nothings agressive (neither are) but would love them to be friends!!

Still working on introductions for our cat and new dog. We haven’t been able to have a dog for the last couple years, and even though the cat spent most of its life so far living with dogs, it hasn’t been in close quarters with one for a couple of years. We keep the dog on a short leash around the cat, and she’s still very curious about the cat. We have an Akita/Collie mix, which makes me slightly anxious because Akita’s have a reputation of going after smaller dogs and cats. But, she’s never lunged or tried to hunt the cat, she just has so much more energy than the cat which freaks the cat out, so the introductions have been minimal. We keep our laundry closet open so the cat has a place to get up and away from the dog, and stay out of sight. They’re getting better with each other, the dog just seems to always think the cat is playing when he runs off, that’s the hardest part for us. The cat has definitely taken a couple of swipes at the dog, and the dog has had some quick movements toward the cat, neither of which we allow to go unnoticed, but they are getting more comfortable around each other.

Our cats have the basement as their area to retreat and regroup. Our dog understands that he is not allowed down the steps without permission. In fact, when the tornado sirens go off, I have to bribe my dog down the basement steps w treats bc he understands so well that this area is off limits to him except under very special circumstances. It can be done and peacefully. We’ve kept our dog from dominating the cats and little by little over time they’ve warmed to him. When we first brought our dog home as a puppy, he was allowed to show curiosity toward our 4 cats, but as soon as we sensed the cats had had enough, we made our dog back off and redirected his attention to something else. There’s sort of that period of time where they need to learn about and figure out how to respect each other’s limits and boundaries. Mostly they just live side by side without too much opinion one way or the other.

We don’t have our puppy home yet but we installed a cat door leading to the basement. We’ve set up a litterbox, bed, and toys, so cats can easily retreat from puppy. But you can install a cat door into any room to create that total feel of safety for them till it’s eventually one big happy family.🙂

We made the mistake of not being active enough in creating encounters between the resident cats and the new puppies, we actually gave the cats too much room (our bedroom) and 18 months later, one the cats hasn't left the room since and the dogs are much bigger now (GSDs). Now we are trying to manage the impulse to chase, whilst there's no aggression it doesn't create a positive interaction. On reflection we probably put too much focus on limiting the puppies movements around the house, from a house training and destruction view point, and not enough on getting the two parties together.

Always let the cat have high ground. Cats will sometimes run and it triggers the prey drive of dogs so try to keep the cat away from the puppy. Some cats will stand and deliver. Be aware that this might happen and you don't want you dog to be afraid of cats or reactionary with them (or hurt).

I have a cat that really doesnt take well to large dogs. She has however spent a lot of her early adult life at my mother’s house in which she had a maltese for a number of years. I just got a mini aussie shepherd that i take delivery of tomorrow afternoon. He is the most docile sweet loving and calm demeanor puppy i have ever encountered. I know my cat will feel like her space is being invaded if i just introduce from the start. Would u suggest that i keep my cat in a separate room and then just have them get used to each other thru smelling of the door Exchanging blankets and such?!?considering how calm he naturally is. I want her calm as possible too

New to the channel. Love the content. My 3 year old GSD came from a home with cats at 9 weeks to us with a 2 year old Bengal who is typically fast and jumps high. The dog has never got used to this and still preys the cat who seems to like winding her up. Is it too late to have them settle as the cat did previously with our other dogs who are since passed away?

My 4 month old GSD chases my cat. I don’t ever leave them together without my supervision and I have now installed a baby gate tall enough so my dog does not jump up, and it also has a small square opening at the bottom for my cat to pass through. I have retreated to leaving them separate for over 2 weeks and am desperate for my dog to get along with her. He almost jumped on top of her when jumping from the couch. Something could have gone horribly wrong if I was not there. I’m watching this video with hopes of any further info to help with my situation. Thank you

I am getting a puppy next month. It is half collie and half staffie. I have an 8yr old cat. I am worried about the two meeting and am worried the cat might hurt the puppy. I deliberately did not get an adult dog as thought that she would be more likely to accept a puppy. I have owned a number of cats but not a dog. I live with a teenager. So we want to get it right. Should I gey a crate?

My concern is that I have a 7 month old Rottweiler/German Shepherd/ lab mix and he is big and full of energy. I also have two cats, one who is just over a year old and one who is about 10 months. Our puppy typically leaves the one year old cat alone because that cat has swiped at the dog a few times, but the puppy loves to try to play with our 10 month old black cat, but the black cat doesn't want to play back ( the dog clombs on top of him and mouths on the cat's legs). We have places for the cats to escape to where the dog is not allowed to go but it keeps happening. Admittedly, our dog is not the most well behaved boy and gets easily excited. When he is distracted, he dies not listen to us. Do you have any advice for us? Thanks
