I run an absolute black oval, I ride rocky tech with punchy climbs, lots o power moves. I noticed a difference on my first climb and subsequent climbs after that. Basically giving me an extra half crank which makes a difference when needed. I also thought spinning on flat sections would feel weird but it actually feels smoother. Knowing that it made a slight difference on my climbing ability means I'd purchase one for my next bike. I still fail at climb attempts all the time and I ride with guys that don't have ovals that make those same climbs so... I guess I'll take what I can get!
Swapped mine last year to oval, and love it ... subtle changes but well worth it. I went for a Superstar Components ring, and so far its been great - ride almost exclusively in the Valley, so it gets some stick, both up & down.
Totally, for a similar price point I find it so worth it. Anything to make the climbs a bit easier is good!

Laura, had one on a mtb years ago think it was suntour. It was good, it's funny how some things go full circle😂

They aren’t the same mate. The suntour (oval tech) ones are the same shape as shimano biopace, which are the opposite of a modern oval relative to crank position.
I noticed knee pain after 6 months of use.. swapped it bk to round pain gone?? 😮
Did you shorten your chain? I had to shorten the chain on my pivot when I switched
I didn’t need to on mine - fitted the same as the previous round 32t

Hi 👋 not changed apart from knowing for sure I will stay on ovals. Not had any negatives and still finding it smoother on the climbs 👍 had the chain guide off for the last couple of months too and not had any chain drop so it seems pretty solid

Hi yep until about a month ago as it was time to replace it and had an old round one lying about. Will be back to oval soon tho. I much prefer the oval. Noticed a difference going back to round - not as smooth and consistent. Just feels a bit more effort than the oval. Lasted me well too!

If your running a Shimano rear mech you need grease your clutch

I’ve heard that oval chainrings ware out the pivots in the rear mech is that true?
I actually watched an interesting gmbn video which covered that as there are lots of varying opinions on it. Conclusion seemed to be barely any difference but people will argue both ways 🤷♀️ one of these ones! Certainly friends who have them haven’t had any unusual wear running them for ages
