Random useless fact about Irn Bru - Coca Cola Enterprises use planograms to tell vendors how to stock their fridges (number of cokes, diet cokes, sprites and in what order etc) and in Scotland Irn Bru is front and centre and in the UK it's somewhere down the bottom.
The Tesco meal deal saved my life in London. I'm a Yorkshireman so I'm incapable of paying London prices so I went about 14 hours without food until I stumbled across a Tesco with universal prices.
The best way to look at roundabouts is as a one way road, which it is. So you're either trying to join or leaving a busy one way road. One of the reasons they are not popular state side is because when they had them in the 1920, but they put traffic lights on them, which caused a lot of accidents and that is where the distrust of them comes from.
So a perfect time for Alanna is staying over night in a historical pub, having fish and chips for dinner. Then in the morning having a full English. She then uses the underground to visit the British Museum (which is free but a £5 donation is fair) then hungry she goes to a M&S foodhall and buys a sausage roll.
What surprised me about what you ‘missed’? The History, around the place. The BBC. That it’s dark by 4pm in winter, and light until nearly 11pm in summer - from 4am.
15:02 Massive curveball as you inadvertently reveal you're talking about restaurant or pub style fish and chips (the shock lemon wedge and garden peas bombshell!), and not what any good Northener assumed you were talking about! Have you had fish and chips from a good northern seaside chippy? Best in the world.
I mean "garden peas" rather than mushy peas with lots of vinegar. She has been softened up by the southerners. When she returns she needs to be rescued from Kent.
Fish and chips from a proper traditional chippie. With either mushy peas, gravy or curry sauce. What about scollops or battered sausages. Has she tried those. We have here in the Midlands lightly battered chips. Orange chips.
The real question when it comes to mushy peas is "vinegar or not?" Marco Pierre White, the award winning chef born and bred in Yorkshire, has suggested that one should taste the peas as they come, then add the vinegar to take them to another dimension. He also likes to assemble a chip butty with any bread and butter that comes on the side, though he admits that this always feels like a mistake afterwards, because you end up feeling so full that you cannot manage all the fish.
The British pub is an.... i almost want to say a religion but i'll settle for institution. You chose well but its made me want to go and get fish and chips for tea . even corona virus couldn't stop those being sold :)
Best pub I (a londoner) ever went to was a pub in Widdicombe Devon. It was a real licensed pub, but it was literally someone's front room. We followed this hulking guy who had obviously just come from plowing a field or something, and drank cider in front of a fire, listening to a small bunch of locals talking with deep Devonshire accents we could barely understand a single word of. It could not possibly have been any more authentic; it felt like we were back in the 13th century or something.
I feel you gave roundabouts a raw deal. You can alleviate your anxiety by bearing in mind as you approach a roundabout that every turnoff you choose leads to a pub at some point.
Once again you've brought a big smile to my face. Regardless of however you rank these British things, the good news is that they are all here waiting for you to come back and enjoy them. Good luck with getting your visa renewed and come back soon. Right, I must be off, cheerio.

You can create all these things at home in Ontario. Example for the underground would be standing squashed up against a family member who hasn't showered and is hot and sweaty and you have your face stuck an inch from their armpit.
"It's a 32 Team single Elimination, so I've written eight things on one side and another eight things on the other side" In the UK, 8+8 equals 16. Clearly Maths is different in Canada.....
Javine : Schiphol Airport has a food stand called BROT with the best sausage rolls I have ever had and I used to work for Trust House Forte and had fresh, out of the massive oven, sausage rolls but Schiphol is now the best!
Americans get confused if you use the word "sausage". To them it means 'sausage meat' not an actual sausage. And their sausage meat isnt what you'd expect to find inside the casing in a good British sausage. I dont know what it is, but it's not the same. Americans call sausages, "links"
I went into M&S today (Manchester for anyone who might care) and when did it turn into a subsidiary of Whole Foods? It looks like a hispster's bedroom and stuff I can get in Aldi in a different wrapper is there for double the price.
By the time you get back home, the pubs will be selling mulled cider! Hopefully the Dickens festival will be on at Rochester Castle....some great mulled wine and cider there 😉
Oh dear, I should have seen it coming - Alanna, in a pub garden drinking cider, eating fish and chips and dreaming of an early morning sausage roll washed down with prosecco.
Fried bread! ‘Right’ was a surprise v. the meal deal, knowing how you are with food 🤣 Back on form with the sausage roll, though (v. Right). Great final round!💕 Yeah, our pubs are good. You need to get to know real ale... and yes, a pub is like a room from home... but not at home.
I was about to type how I've been watching these videos for too long as I can guess the correct answer instantly aftering hearing the two 'teams'... But then Iron Bru just won a round & I'm sat in shock!
Okay, Tea being knocked out made me scowl. Roast Dinners being knocked out by Fish and Chips made me shake with rage but Football being knocked out by an M&S Foodhall?! Thanks Alanna, my laptop is now in a million pieces on the floor! M&S is for Toffs! The average working class British person isn't even aware they exist! I need a cup of tea to calm down.
I'm about to nap. I'm in that blissful pre-nap period where you know the nap is about to start. There is no risk of the nap not taking place, it's a certainty. The sun is waning in the sky, its last shafts of light are kissing the ground nearby, I'm sure of it. Every subtle movement I make as I I lay here sends cuddlesome vibes pulsing through my synapses. I'm seconds away from closing the lid on my laptop..
Another terrific video Alanna...... Roundabouts are an essential for safety, to keep the traffic flowing, and with no mandatory stop lines. If you ever see an overhead video of one, and with heavy traffic, it's really impressive to see the movement, and almost like it's been choreographed! If you want to practice with roundabouts, there are one hundred an thirty of them in Milton Keynes....lol Any chance of a hint as to your favourite pub?
I'll raise a glass to you at the pub tomorrow. All our pubs restaurants shops and everything else are/is open here in the isle of man where we have had no covid for well over a month and feeling very lucky. Hope you make it back to a kent beer garden soon.
No.1 drinking tea in a Que No.2 fish n chips for lunch then a roast for dinner No.3 if you haven't had breakfast in a British pub you haven't lived No.4 you can get the tube to the British museum No.5 a chip butty is the perfect accompaniment to a sausage roll THE BEST BRITISH THING IS YOU CAN HAVE IT ALL YOU DONT HAVE TO CHOOSE
I think you like this pub it's got character, if you get to do it. Go to the Duke of Northumberland which is in erith Kent on bexley road I think you may like that pub when you get back
I'm happy that the pub won. Now, there's fish 'n' chips and fish and chips! The first one is what we Yorkshire folk eat - with vinegar (it's a must, otherwise it's like a roast without the gravy) and MUSHY peas, not garden peas. The fish should be haddock, comes without the skin on and boned. An additional accompaniment would be wi' bits on (also called scraps). All other fish and chips from around the UK cannot hold a candle to the Yorkshire variety.
I knew that the pub would win from the start but watched it through anyway as very entertaining. You are absolutely right of course. The pubs are still shut so you aren't missing out right now. Hopefully the pub gardens will be open soon. It's been too long!
The Pub v. The Tube - I have to agree with you 100% : As good as the tube is, to get the full advantage of it, i.e. to get to ANYWHERE in London, there's a lot of changing trains and walking between platforms to be done. Pubs on the other hand, are EVERYWHERE in Britain, (that's LONDON as well as the REAL UK,) and once there, you can just sit down, and get happily inebriated: you don't have to walk anywhere, (save to the toilets two or three times.) If it's the walking you're into, there's such a thing as a 'pub crawl' which is a lot more fun than getting lost at Baker Street.

@@shadowheart8279 America has a few, in some cases they have used British road signs because they don't have a sign of their own! I also failed my first driving test because of a roundabout that I didn't slow down for. EVEN THOUGH THERE WAS NOTHING COMING! Chief examiner, you're an idiot...
They’re called traffic circles in NYC area. NJ used to have a lot, but they are getting replaced.
Perhaps she should visit Swindon when she returns to Blighty and she can have a go on the Magic Roundabout.
Dave F ooohhh that’s cruel!
Brilliant. Just had to say it is always nice to see your happy face pop up and say "let's go!" Puts a big smile on my face. Thanks for that.
😊 thank you
You can create all these things at home in Ontario. Example for the underground would be standing squashed up against a family member who hasn't showered and is hot and sweaty and you have your face stuck an inch from their armpit.
"It's a 32 Team single Elimination, so I've written eight things on one side and another eight things on the other side"
In the UK, 8+8 equals 16. Clearly Maths is different in Canada.....
8+4+2+2+4+8=28
If 'thing' = 'match' does that help? 16+16?
I never knew that other countries didn't have sausage rolls
sucks to be them
Javine : Schiphol Airport has a food stand called BROT with the best sausage rolls I have ever had and I used to work for Trust House Forte and had fresh, out of the massive oven, sausage rolls but Schiphol is now the best!
15:20 - 15:33 I think we nearly lost you there. The realm of waking dreams was calling.
Right, that's me I'm offski, very common in Scotland.
The individual combat rounds were mad to start with! Love it!
I was about to type how I've been watching these videos for too long as I can guess the correct answer instantly aftering hearing the two 'teams'... But then Iron Bru just won a round & I'm sat in shock!
Highlight every Tuesday! True Adventures and Naps viewers knew it was going to be British pubs. Great to see an M and S Foodhall featured too
Fish and chips + 6 pints of lager at 7 am in an airport. We are living in the future people.
Tea out in the first round??!! I'm gonna have to get the kettle on to get over the shock.... 🍵
Yes.....Totally agree with the top 2
Another terrific video Alanna......
Roundabouts are an essential for safety, to keep the traffic flowing, and with no mandatory stop lines.
If you ever see an overhead video of one, and with heavy traffic, it's really impressive to see the movement, and almost like it's been choreographed!
If you want to practice with roundabouts, there are one hundred an thirty of them in Milton Keynes....lol
Any chance of a hint as to your favourite pub?
I'll raise a glass to you at the pub tomorrow. All our pubs restaurants shops and everything else are/is open here in the isle of man where we have had no covid for well over a month and feeling very lucky. Hope you make it back to a kent beer garden soon.
No.1 drinking tea in a Que
No.2 fish n chips for lunch then a roast for dinner
No.3 if you haven't had breakfast in a British pub you haven't lived
No.4 you can get the tube to the British museum
No.5 a chip butty is the perfect accompaniment to a sausage roll
THE BEST BRITISH THING IS YOU CAN HAVE IT ALL YOU DONT
HAVE TO CHOOSE
"Here take this you're going to need it" That's the best kind of friend.
I too went in an M&S food store and found something weird that I had never seen before - I found an Alana!
I think you like this pub it's got character, if you get to do it. Go to the Duke of Northumberland which is in erith Kent on bexley road I think you may like that pub when you get back
just had fish n chips on Worthing pier in the sun...pubs opening soon!!!! thanks for your weekly videos,, cheers to you..
Home Office ! fastrack this lovely Canadian girl please.
OMG, Alanna: writing in your brackets out in real time, and in INK?! There’s no going back...you’re living on the edge.
My husband has allowed me to write this ... agree with you on the pub with lovely fish and chips, salt and vinegar and homemade tartar sauce! Yum!
So funny and proof of integration lol , it really seems harsh to call you a foreigner Alanna 🏴😉👍
Perhaps the "Best Canadian Thing" bracket episode can be done. I vote the CFL (Go Argos!)...❤
From an Englishman's point of view it has to be a Ploughman's lunch with real ale in a traditional English pub garden!!!
I knew that the pub would win from the start but watched it through anyway as very entertaining. You are absolutely right of course. The pubs are still shut so you aren't missing out right now. Hopefully the pub gardens will be open soon. It's been too long!
Hey, Ive been watching your channel for a long time now and I love your vids, keep it up!
Thank you so much, really appreciate it!!
Plate o' scampi at the flat top with a few Stellas on the side. Simple as.
Our pubs will be opening (sort of) on 4th July but its table service only so can't go and order at the bar
