    As a guy that sews, I enjoyed you making things for Patrick. There is tons of content for sewing dresses, skirts, etc. and I’ve learned a lot of techniques from those videos. But there’s not a lot of men’s clothing. Thank you, and thank you for sewing things for others.

      I guess I never thought about that! I see so much sewing content here, and I never really noticed it’s primarily women’s clothing. I’ll absolutely be making more stuff for Patrick, so I’ll try to keep including those! Thanks so much for watching!

      That's so sweet, thank you! I find it so satisfying to compare newer projects to older ones. Tangible progress it the best!
      I've been doing art my whole life, so I guess I've just been practicing the compassion part for a long time. haha I cringe when I see some of the old art I made and was proud of at one point, but if I hadn't ever made it, how would I be making the stuff I'm making now?! It really keeps me motivated.
      Thanks so much for watching 💕

      Thank you!! I usually find most of them on Etsy, and I’ve found there are so many great independent pattern makers there!
      I feel like learning more about how to dress for my body type has helped me narrow down which popular patterns will and won’t suit me well. It has kind of forced me to do a little extra digging. I’m glad to hear I introduced you to a few new ones! ☺️

    I am so happy to see someone so excited about her sewing journey. I am up in years now, but I remember when I first decided to teach myself to sew, there was no stopping me. I would make my own patterns or maybe draft two different patterns for a completely different look. The whole idea is it gives you a chance to express your individuality! And I think you've created some terrific items. Keep up your great work!

    I hope when our country resumes its sanity we will return to Home Ec classes. So much can be learned by proper education in home sewing and cooking skills. Imagine a fun class on up cycling garments after basic sewing skills are learned in semester one. After my first year I took summer classes with a neighborhood lady. One of my fondest memories.

    Amazing...you are very productive and brave. As a woman of a certain age, who's been sewing for about 60 years, I am very impressed with you. I think you look much better in all the colors that would be considered to be in the Winter palette. (Pure cool jewel tones, pure white, pure black, navy, etc.) Especially stunning in the last dress: the black and white floral (Paris) short dress! The other colors in the Autumn and Spring palettes definitely wash you out, at least on my monitor. Find a color analyst and get it done! Try using a Teflon presser foot for sewing leather. Yes, I watched the entire video. Great production quality.

    • @madewithrach
      @madewithrach  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks so much! 😊
      Color analysis has been so confusing, and you're right, I think my camera settings make it even trickier. Even when I'm shooting in manual, I have auto white balance, which can make me appear warmer or cooler on camera, depending what is surrounding me.
      In person, I have pretty obvious warm tones, but I do think my undertone is actually pretty neutral. I tan really easily, so I usually have a pretty apparent warm overtone, as well as a lot of warm red tones in my hair, making my overall appearance warm. Most would think I'd be soft autumn since I'm neutral/warm, but to your point, I do think my level of contrast requires deeper and lighter tones, and medium/soft tones can make me look pretty washed out. I've done some at home draping, and I find that a lot of deep autumn colors (the deep ones as well as the much lighter ones) are some of the most flattering on me, but I don't fit the description for a deep season! The more saturated true autumn colors are friendly to me, as well as a few true summer colors as well. I guess I think of myself as a soft season because I do have a muted quality to my skin, lips, and eyes (they're grayish blue/green) but my overall contrast is medium/high, especially because I have pretty dark eyebrows.
      I love the black and white dress! While I do feel like I can pull of higher contrast, I think its worth noting that I'm wearing makeup in this video, so the black and white looks a lot better on me than it would if I were bare-faced. I don't think there'd ever be a scenario in which I'd wear that dress with no makeup though, so it works out! Makeup is such a helpful tool when it comes to wearing colors well that fall outside our natural palette. I love that I can disguise myself as a winter if I want to!
      I used to dye my hair dark and wear winter makeup to go with a lot of my black work clothes, and it definitely helped, but now that I look back at old photos, I just remember how much work it was to disguise my natural coloring for so long! Thinking of doing a video showing all my hair colors over the years. Could be fun!
      Anyway, thanks so much for watching!!

      @sandraobrien8705 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Her makeup in the video is warm but I also felt she looked best in winter tones, specifically icy pastel colours. I didn't see her as an autumn either, as to me those tones wash her out. I thought she was definitely a lighter version of winter/darker summer but she will know what she feels attractive in.

    • @kittifire
      @kittifire 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm team Autumn, only because I am a mid-contrast autumn myself and I am also going through the process of figuring out why certain colours can be borrowed from other areas. I think that deep winter shades may suit you because Deep Autumns can borrow from them? But thats why I loved your tie dying video because i have also this cool toned stone neutral top that i HATE and now i wonna dye it brown haha

    This was a very fun video to watch. I'm a knitter/sewist/gardener with a 9 month old and had so much fun watching all your makes while finishing a sweater my MIL started for my husband 35 years ago. This year I plan on sewing a lot more since it's so much faster than knitting, considering how little time I have with darling baby boy. Congrats on all your progress!

      And yes, one of my closest friends knits, and I was thinking about taking it up too, but I don’t feel like I have the time or patience! Sewing is so satisfying for me because I can make something in a couple days, rather than the months it would take to knit! Haha

    I just can't 😂 the Spongebob costume you made for your daughter is SO cute, I love it! Also, great job. I can't believe you're a beginner at sewing. Your wardrobe is so pretty and it makes me more excited to try out sewing, once i get a machine. I was afraid i wouldnt be able to produce anything id want to wear within the first year 😅 you've given me hope that thet might not be the case lol

      Yay, thanks!! I’m happy you got a kick out of that! She insisted on being a kitty cat this year, which wasn’t quite as exciting to design, but turned out equally cute! Haha
      I’m so excited for you to start sewing!! It does take a bit of patience and getting to know your machine, but there are so many resources out there to help! I feel like what really helped me to start making things I actually wore was taking my time and trying to enjoy the process rather than rushing to the end! Mistakes are inevitable, no matter how long someone’s been doing it, so be easy on yourself!Sewing is SO fun, and I hope you end up loving it too!

    And btw you learned quickly how to sew really well! You’re inspiring me to stop being afraid to just go for it. Thank you so much for this video.

I feel more confident with each project, and even when things don’t look perfect, it’s still fun to be able to wear the projects I’m learning with!
      That’s so cool you’re interested in making specifically 50s clothing! I’m sure you’ll learn all sorts of really unique techniques that way!

I made it as a pajama shirt first, and then with some white fabric with a silver pinstripe and a textured pinstripe through it, because he needed a dressy shirt but doesn't like to tuck it in, so this pattern was perfect for it. Now I still want to make him a couple in maybe a cotton or linen that are more casual.

      Thats great! I feel like thats a great way to polish up your skills, get to really know your machine, and see how different fabrics behave while using the same pattern.
      My suggestion-- try to find some really inexpensive fabric you're not attached to, maybe thrifted, and try out a quality pattern you are a little unsure of having the skills for. You'll most likely learn a few things and surprise yourself!!
      If it does turn out unwearable, at least you didn't spend a bunch on fabric, and you've figured out a couple new skills to practice!
      I hope you branch out at some point, because you're definitely capable of more than you think!

    Congrats on your sewing progress. As a mature woman who has been sewing since before I started school (over 50yrs & I've never needed an overlocker/serger to produce couture quality), it's just so nice to see young people learning how very useful sewing skills are. Re dresses not fitting properly - we all have different postures & our patterns need to be adjusted accordingly. Search for images of 'Sway Back Posture' (or other posture types) - there are several types of sway back, but I think you'll find your body shape there. Then look up a pattern adjustment to match. You also mentioned a small bust, there's a pattern adjustment for that too. Adjustments make things fit so much better. Re your colouring - I'm a college-accredited Make-up Artist & Beauty Therapist & I can tell you that "Color Me Pretty" stuff is BS, there's a reason they went broke here in Australia decades ago - NOBODY fits in to category boxes, human beings are all different. Would you like the secret of how we professionals find the colours that make you appear most vibrant? Look at your pale inner wrist (non-driving hand), are your veins more blue or green? If they are more blue, cool colours tend to work better because you have a neutral or pinkish undertone. If your veins show as green, you'll have a slightly golden yellow undertone & warmer colours work better. The kicker is you can have BOTH or either, because humans change. You can wear ANY colour; you just have to choose what outcome you want from it (ie do I need to look pale or sickly so I can go home early today? lol) & select a warm or cool variant of the selected colour which fits your undertone. Hope this helps! You're right about aiming for the best finish & doing your repairs, if something looks high quality, you will have no hesitation in selling or donating it later - so much fabric goes to landfill & we sewers need to be more responsible than the fast fashion companies we reject. On a final note, you made some great pattern choices to learn from, once you have the hang of it all, make up your own patterns from blocks - there are plenty of free books online & save that pattern money to buy good quality fabrics made from natural fibres, please. Today's polyesters sent to landfill will still be there, long after our children's children have left this earth, if we don't sew responsibly, we do more harm as sewers than we ever did as minor consumers of fast fashion. Best wishes & continued luck.

    I love how different everyone is. If I buy anything that has lengthy straps on it, the first thing I'll do is cut them off lol I'm on a similar journey. I just got my sewing machine back after 15 years. I did some small projects back in the day, and now, I'm really diving into it. The last few years I've done a lot of embroidery so I hope to incorporate that as well. Loving this video!

      Haha funny! I kind of feel the same way about pockets in dresses. I usually take them out because I feel like they just create bulk in weird places, but so many people love them! Haha
      That’s so great you’re getting back into sewing! I’d love to get better at embroidery too, you can add so many cute and unique touches that way! So cool!

    I’ve stopped sewing because I didn’t like the patterns at Joann’s. (Big box fabric/craft store). You have inspired me to try again. You have done a fabulous job in your first year!

      Yay! Yes, there are so many awesome independent pattern makers out there! I buy most of my patterns on Etsy, and having to put together the pdf patterns takes time, but it’s been so worth it.
      The last time I used a pattern from Joann’s, I made my husband a shirt (12 years ago! 😂) It was way too boxy on him, but he kept it anyway!
      I know there are a lot of good patterns at Joann’s too, but I find it easier to find more current silhouettes and styles by shopping for my patterns elsewhere. You can find some really great free and inexpensive pdf patterns online too!
      Thanks so much for watching, and hope you pick sewing back up! ☺️

    I think the cowl neck that you think messed up is very cute with the droop in the back.

    I love the clothes. For me, they’re nostalgic of the 1970s, when I owned and wore some similar tops and dresses.

    wow the bags and the hardware are so fun! everything you have made is very chic, all the clothes too! I love romantic vibe pieces and outfits, but i work in an office, and i am starting to get into corporate ish or more structured pieces too. thank you for sharing Rachel, such a lovely collection! and I can't believe you made all this in just a year! it takes so much discipline to start and see a project through to the end. and i am inspired by you finishing all these projects up neatly. also, i'm an autumn too, so it was a treat to see all these colors! also neat to see all the new skills you learned over time, the understitch, the french seams, etc. thanks for adding those details too. have a great summer!! can't wait to see what beautiful pieces you make this season

    stunning! you are definitely very talented and gifted to be able to draft and sew this nicely. For the white satin dress fit issue: look into sway back ajustements, you might have to take a horizontal slice out at the waist to fix the fit issue. It feels like you have to much fabric at middle back and that is usually the reason. Try pinning it and see if if helps.

    On your bias dress, I have made a couple of them. I usually just pin where those bumps are & take it in more. Those bumps will come out. Also where you place your pattern pieces will effect the drape. The inner, or center part of the fabric will have a looser weave & the outside is tighter. You should match your drape. Good luck!

      Thanks so much! I had no idea the fabric weave was different between the outside and center. So helpful!

    As a hobby sewer for 50+ years, I applaud you for a job well done. On that note; as you continue to learn the craft two basic tips that I suggest to attain a professional 'industrial' finish are: a) Regardless of the project and when constructing it; continuously press (not to be confused with iron) using the proper tool. i.e.: Blend stiches for example with the tip of your iron only, use a needle board for nap/textured fabrics etc. b) Learn and utilize your machine attachments. i.e.: Ruffle, hemming, piping foot etc. To conclude; I have personally found these two tips beneficial even if you are combining the techniques of 'industrial' sewing and that of 'haute couture' given reason why I even mention them.
