This time around we take a look at another PATREON request with a first time reaction to Bucks Fizz and the song " The Land of Make Believe." This 80s song features lots of harmonies and decent chorus, with a lot of cheesy moments. Safe to say it didn't age to well. See it now!

This was over 40 years ago, back then videos were pretty new and they never gave bands a big budget, it wasn't until a few years later when the likes of Duran Duran and Michael Jackson started making expensive videos that record companies realized the potential and started funding them.

The story of the song is quite interesting: when after the Eurovision (despite the success) they got every "goods" in their neck from the music scene the band and its creators felt they needed some stronger new material to avoid the 'one-hit-wonder' stamp. The first album and its singles didn't achieve the desired success and attention so they choose another direction; they already hired Peter Sinfield the former lyricist of King Crimson and Emerson, Lake & Palmer (and producer of the 1st Roxy Music album) who was famous of his darker, more adult and sometimes heavily symbolic lyrics and - after they heard his two contribution from The 1st Album and they seemed to work - asked him to write some more shiftier stuff for the next run. Sinfield took it serious as always and this song is a very good example for it: though it sounds like a childish contemporary pop jingle he used eerie tropes and hid creepy tones between the lines about the wild capitalistic economy and politics of the Thatcher-era and its effects to the people who try to refuge to escapism.
The tactics worked: the band almost got the Christmas No.1. status on the British Singles Chart (of course the 'Don't You Want Me' was stronger, by the way the Human League singer Phil Oakey was a fan of the band) and some of the earlier critics revised their opinions - Bob Geldof (one of the most harsh mockers) personally expressed his liking of the song to them. The success also turned on the band's 'car', for a few years the Top 10 attendance was insured for their singles (my personal fav is 'When We Were Young')

Good reaction Dereck. The fourth single by Bucks Fizz, 'The Land of Make Believe' is quite a polarizing song, love it or hate it. It was released just when Electronica pop was becoming popular. Initially Mike Nolan hated the song and said to Andy Hill (the groups creator) that if released it would finish them off as a band but when he heard the tracks that had already been recorded by Cheryl & Jay he changed his mind and it became their biggest selling single. Their second hit, 'Piece of the Action' got to number 12. Andy can be heard on many of their songs too. Their third single 'One of Those Nights', floundered at number 20, the week previously it had actually dropped in the UK charts and I suspect that everyone thought that was the end of their career. After 'The Land of Make Believe' came 'My Camera Never Lies', which had a more 'grown up' feel to it and was praised for it's structure, lyrics and vocals by music critics. The video is much better and you could see that RCA had thrown money at it. Try and guess all the film titles in it spread throughout. Gone with the Wind and The Wizard of Oz are the most notable ones. Moving on, in 2004 Andy Hill had purchased Nytimber Vineyards, a kind of British Champaign, which did rather well and he hadn't worked in the music industry for a while so was disposing of his studio and all the master tapes which were stored in an old barn. (Elkie Brooks, Nazereth, Cliff Richard etc) A friend of mine, Dean Murphy had been a session drummer with Sony Music (who RCA/BMG had sold the rights too) and knew Mike Nolan and Andy Hill, having worked with Mike in one of the various incarnations of 'Bucks Fizz'. Andy called him and invited him to Nytimber to go through the tapes and take what he wanted as everything was going to landfill. On his first visit Dean found unreleased tracks and extended versions of tracks that had never been released. He invited me down to the second visit and we went through everything and took what we could back to London in my car but we had to leave 90% of the masters there. We made arrangements to go back and hire a van (a bloody big one) a few weeks later, which we did and took all the original 24 track master tapes and the original production masters that we found. Andy also gave us his original 1/4" and 1/2" tape machines. In and amongst were a couple of tracks that had long been rumoured about but no one had ever heard - 'I Used to Love the Radio' - a song about a post nuclear war society and Jay Aston's version of 'Oh Suzanne' which appeared on their Greatest Hits album but was never released as a single and featured Cheryl on lead vocal. in 1982 Andy had enlisted Pete Sinfield and their second album 'Are You Ready' took a different approach, less fluffy pop and more serious lyrics. I do believe that the group were not happy with the direction the writing was going so they returned back to the pop sound for their third album 'Hand Cut'. In 1983 Andy started to utilise other writers like Frank Musker Warren Harry (later Bacall) Dominic Bugatti, and even covered a Nik Kershaw track, 'She Cries'. The original multi track had more vocals on than the album version as by this time Bobby G was exerting his influence in production, often taking out the other members vocals. Jay was supposed to have lead vocal on a track called 'Indebted to You' (which was written for her) from their fourth studio album with RCA, called 'I Hear Talk' but Bobby re-recorded the vocals so he was lead singer. In 2005 I became an Executive Producer and myself Dean and a good friend of ours Alan Conner worked with Sony and released their first four studio albums in extended and remastered format. We also released 'The Lost Masters' a collection of unreleased tracks that were different to the original versions. Prior to this came 'The Ultimate Anthology' featuring all 20 singles and extended versions. Then came 'Up Until Now' featuring vocals from previous band member Shelley Preston who replaced Jay in 1985, and some remixes that we did in our studio. 'Lost Masters 2' followed along with 'The Platinum Collection' featuring their time with RCA. As the band had signed up with Polydor in 1985 we could not licence the tracks from that era. Polydor did agree to rerelease 'Writing on the Wall' in a double CD along with 'Lost Masters 3' which featured some unreleased solo material from Bobby and Shelley. Dean had to retire from the music industry a fair few years ago. .
I have virtually all their multi tracks and production masters (all 400+ of them) in my garage.
My suggestions for the ones to review (if you want to) are -
    The RCA years with Videos
    Now Those Days Are Gone
    Rules of the Game
Talking in your Sleep (Cover of The Romantics but with a much harder feel)
I Hear Talk (This became a underground success in the American gay clubs having been remixed from the extended version by club DJ's at the time but never released in the US)
You and Your Heart so Blue
Heart of Stone (Later covered by Cher)
    The Polydor Years with Videos
New Beginning (Cover of a Force8/The Dooleys track)
Love the One You're With (Cover of Crosby Stills and Nash)
In 2018 (now rebranded as The Fizz, minus Bobby G) started to work with Mike Stock of Stock, Aitkin and Waterman fame (Dead or Alive, Rick Astley, Kylie Minogue) and released a new album which got to number 25 in the UK album charts called The F- Z of Pop (F to Z)
    Suggested reviews with Videos are
    Dancing in the Rain
    Amen
In 2020 they released a second album, Smoke and Mirrors which is a nod to the music industry and all its shallowness.
    Suggested reviews with videos are
    Winning Ways
    The World we Left Behind
    T.O.T.P.
And one without, but I could definitely see The Dixie Chicks covering
    Second to None.
That's all for now, but thanks for the review.

It was an instant catcher for me and also for the record buying public those days.Good decent tune with many good hooks. And rocketed quite quickly at the top that year dethroning Human League's "Don't you want me" off the No1 spot .The video might seem kinda "messy" but the song is great for me.They sometimes sounded like "overproduced" but that was quite trendy at those times.I was expecting him to like it though. Some other good ones; Easy Love/Making your mind up/Piece of the action/One of those nights/Talking in your sleep/Run for your life/When we were young/If you cant stand the heat.Jay Aston was considered a real sex bomb in the UK pop scene according to the music press at the time which was also very positive on them at the time and considered them cool btw. .P.S."Play it again" Dereck. It may grow on you. It's such a good song, a real '80s classic.

TLOMB was filmed at White City Swimming Baths in London. Although their second single 'Piece of the Action had a OK video, the next single 'One of Those Nights' didn't have s video at all. After TLOMB became a number 1 million selling single RCA threw a lot on money at the follow up singles, notably My Camera Never Lies, Now Those Days Are Gone, if You Can't Stand The Heat, Run For Your Life. Notable exceptions were When We Were Young and London Town which looked cheap by comparison.

Hi I would really appreciate it if you would react to, From Here to Entity by The Fizz, formally known as Bucks Fizz The Fizz - From Here To Eternity (Official Video).
Below is a little history of the group and singer.
Bucks Fizz star Jay Aston has endured a hellish ordeal over the last few years.
The singer, who rose to fame when the British band won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1981 with 'Making Your Mind Up', has suffered from her own agonising health battles.
Jay was diagnosed with mouth cancer in June 2018, had a gruelling seven-hour operation to remove a section of her tongue and then had it rebuilt using part of her thigh.
They recorder this track on the day Jay was diagnosed with cancer which make it very emotional.
Jay has recovered and is still touring with the group they just played a sell out concert at the 02 arena in London 43 years after winning the Eurovision.

There were only 4 of them, Cheryl Baker, Mike Nolan, Jay Aston & Bobby Gee. Try making your mind up by this group.

Perhaps this was when the band were falling out. I want to sing, l want to sing ect. Soon after this the band were involved in a horrific accident. This resulted in Mike Nolan, the pretty blond one (male) going through the windscreen of the tour bus. The recovery was slow but the band still tour, all be it as two separate bands after lots of keeping lawyers rich. Don't give up on them yet, they were a typical 80's happy band. Eurovision winners.

This was after their success of winning Eurovision, yes they were involved in a coach crash in 1984 during their concert tour where both Cheryl Baker and Mike Nolan went through the windshield where Cheryl Baker still has the scars of the gravel road in her leg and Mike Nolan was close to death and had suffered major brain injury. The only members that can recall that day is Bobby Gee and Jay Aston, yes there were problems because Jay was seeing their Mangers husband at the time that caused tension and also Jay was alot younger than the other three. Time is a great healer and now We have Mike, Cheryl and Jay all making new music with Mike Stock who helped Kylie Minogues career at SAW and now writes songs with The Fizz due to having to change name due to trademark battle with ex member Bobby Gee who owns the name. The song that the girls take centre stage is Can't Stand The Heat, the costumes and choreography for all their songs were created and designed and made by Jay as she was into fashion and went to a dance school.

@@julessherwood It's Bobby G's (Gubby) wife, Heidi Manton, who owns the trademark to the name. I suspect something to do with Bobby's two bankruptcies. Manton was 4 at the time of the Eurovision win. Manton was the 6th in linage along with Amanda Szwarc being the 7th. The several other 'recruits' came and went, only staying with Manton for a year or two. Whilst I am not exactly sure why, a former member hinted that it was due to Manton's constant interference, lack of musical experience including altering the dance routines to something like an amateur kids end-of-the-pier-tat-show, (Manton was a former Red Coat kids entertainer at Butlins) which I can certainly vouch for, (Blackpool with several other forgotten acts like 'The Krankies', an husband and wife 'comedy' act with wife dressing up as a young boy and sitting on husbands knee, unthinkable now) and dressing the men like 'wine waiters' and the girls like old prostitutes! They were also using some cheap Karaoke style backing tracks for most of the songs played over an alleged 'live' band. Over the years their bookings dwindled (not surprising) and they started working with Brotherhood of Man at a few theatre shows. When Cheryl, Mike and Jay went on national live TV with BoM (MYMU and Kisses for Me) BoM stopped working with Manton's poor facsimile. They haven't had any bookable appearance (not that you'd want to) since 2014/15, only Butlins where you had to book for a minimum of three nights in a chalet in 2016 with other unmemorable 'tat show' acts. I believe one gig was actually as a fish and chip restaurant. Their official site hasn't been updated since 2018. Whereas Cheryl, Mike and Jay have had successful Theatre tours and have released several albums, most notably with Mike Stock (Stock, Aitkin & Waterman) Manton's poor facsimile has done nothing. Whenever Eurovision comes around (including this year with the announcement that the UK will hold the 2023 event due to the war in Ukraine) it's always CM&J who get interviewed on mainstream TV, BBC, ITV, SKY etc and are usually named as Bucks Fizz (SKY), never Manton/Gubby Et Al. . I've met Manton a couple of times, once on the Here and Now Arena tours when Cheryl, Mike, Bobby and Shelley Preston who replaced Jay played together under the banner 'The Original Bucks Fizz' despite Preston not being an 'original' member, she did tour and record with them. Manton is instantly dislikeable and, truth is, so is Gubby, met him backstage and he was extremely rude to me and a friend who were putting together the Ultimate Anthology CD with Sony Music from the original production master tapes that had cost us personally £25K to have transferred to digital, but that's another story. Whenever CM&J got a gig Manton would fire off a fax (YES A FAX) threatening to sue the venue for trademark infringement if they were billed as Bucks Fizz. Says it all really.

This is extremely cheesy but yet so catchy. Has a bit of a children’s tune vibe but so match the lyrics.. A true guilty pleasure… Very young Celine Dion did a French language cover… and musically it fell into the gap between disco and 80‘s synth pop though the arrangement itself was pretty modern with all the electronic beats… Bucks Fizz were not the best vocalists unfortunately… the group was cast for Eurovision 1981 and won for the uk.

Bucks Fizz aren't really the calibre of act you seemed to enjoy. They were a fun pop group but I am not surprised you weren't much impressed lol.

Recording and touring 1981 to 1985 with RCA, 1986 with Polydor and then back to RCA 1987 to 1988. Cheryl Mike and Shelley since 2004 (Cheryl and Shelley had children in the 90's) to 2009 when Shelley left and Jay re-joined. 2018 saw a new album with Mike Stock from Stock Aitkin & Waterman (think Dead or Alive, Rick Astley and Kylie Minogue), several tours, so in one form or another 41 years. Not bad saying average life of a band is around 5 years.
