Actually the 3rd arc started in episode 21 when Tai came home the first time, from 21-39. Because the Myotismon arc is the longest.

I don't include 21 because it has nothing to do with Vamdemon, nor do I include 22 through 26 because Vamdemon's presence is not as strong. To be fair, they are a PicoDevimon arc...

@@whattheegad I'd argue the prelude to the Myotismon is part of what makes it so good. We as the audience are made aware of Myotismon's presence before the children, and while it could be called the DemiDevimon arc, he is always undeniably working for Myotismon arc the entire time, and there's a presence of mystery and suspense behind the otherwise relatively mundane mission to bring the kids back together

Since the Japanese versions are no longer available for legal streaming, I started watching the English dub with my daughters. We actually watched tamers first and then adventure. But what is weird is in sabans dub, the digimon partners refer to the other digimon partners with abbreviated names. Like they call agumon, agu. I never noticed this before. I'm sure to stops eventually but it has happened on and off up to the devimon episode.

On a surface level, the children's digimon revert back to rookie level because of plot convenience.
On a deeper level, they are still children and are bound by their shape. Let us remind that growth of character takes decades.
None of what we see with the chosen children are even remotely representable for children of their age.
But also, age of body says nothing about age of soul.
For most digimon, growth of body reflects their growth of self. Champion levels behave like (young) adults, while Perfect/Ultra are more refined adults.
Mega is reserved for powerful and influential individuals (let that be good or bad).

As I didn't see most of the episode's beyond toy village episode, I must say I loved early seasons focus on survival. After all these are children stuck in a hostile environment. Part of me hope's that they would made children more distrusting towards their partners.

  • @benjaminpeters6729

My head cannon is that the other digimon naturally reached those forms as a process of their aging. Same with gatomon. It seems as if being with the children allows the partners large power increases, but only for short periods of time. So by partnering with humans, the digimon are temporarily powerful, but generally weaker than the digimon that reach upper tier stages of power naturally.

Tailmon says something about this in Episode 38; she says that's a matter of "discipline" and that she's able to maintain her Adult form because she's more disciplined than the other partner Digimon.

@@benjaminpeters6729 What's the basis for this assertion? I'm curious. If there's a website or documentation on what Toei was doing at the time, I'd eagerly read up on that.

I remember reading in pokemon that they didnt let ashs team evolve because the starters sans charmander were more marketable than their evolved forms. I'm just assuming toei thought along the same lines. But marketability is what drives these shows. Look how much merchandising konaka had to put into tamers just to appease his mandate from toei.

6:10 In Episode 29, is the digital gate represented by water as it was in Episode 1? Or is it implied?
13:57 This might be something that was in the dub, but I remembered Gomamon referring to the fish as his “buddies.” If the video games are any indication, the fish might just materialise as part of his attack and then disappear, so they might not be edible. Still it would be an admittedly hilarious utilisation of Gomamon’s abilities.
In your opinion, in terms of aesthetics, which Digimon partners have the best and worst character designs, counting evolutions?
The Gabumon line is a personal favourite with WereGarurumon somewhat breaking the look due to being bipedal, although I like its design regardless.
While many joke about how the Gatomon line has no consistency, I think it’s fine. Digimon are made of data, so they don’t really need to have consistency. My issue with the line is Angewomon. I dislike how it’s derivative of Angemon, yet is given a revealing design for no particular reason. While I dislike Rosemon for also having a revealing design, I can’t point to a male counterpart and say that the designs are biased.

After they jump through the Digital Gate, we get a scene that mirrors that of Episode 01, where they're seen falling down parallel waterfalls as they travel between worlds.
The Marching fishes thing is seemingly explained in Episode 16 when Gomamon, somehow, summons a bunch of them to attack the rogue Greymon. Koushiro says something about them having come from another dimension. So, I supposed one is lead to assume Gomamon rips a hole into some fish dimension? It's very strange.
As for aesthetics, I'm not particularly keen on some of the more human-like Digimon as that would detract from the "monster" thing going on. I even think the name "Angewomon" is really bizarre, since the "mon" isn't supposed to be derivative of the word "man." At least, as far as I can tell. The female version of Devimon isn't called "Deviwomon" after all, is it? And the fact that Angewomon and LadyDevimon are Perfect-level Digimon whereas Angemon and Devimon are Adult-level Digimon? Doesn't make a lot of sense to me either.
In the end, I prefer monsters to be monsters; not humans wearing costumes.

@@whattheegad Yeah I'm not very fond of the Digimon that are basically just humans, like Sistermon, but I REALLY don't like how alot of Megas just become vaguely humanoid. It's like once Omnimon debuted and he became popular, they just cranked out a bunch of designs like that instead of putting more thought into them. At least things like Angemon, Asuramon and Ogremon have distinct non-human flair to their designs.
Just like how before, the Baby and In-Training designs were all distinct organisms, but from Tamers and onward, the Baby mons are just simplified versions of their canon Rookie forms.
As for Gomamon, considering there are numerous entities in the Digital World aren't actually Digimon themselves, things like fish, plants and other Non-Digimon beings are likely just simplified programs used for a specific purpose or to fill in the blanks of an ecological niche, and Gomamon summoning fish from the ocean is akin to a Summon X monster spell in a video game.
Also, regarding you confusion as to why the children's Digimon revert to Rookie form while wild Digimon stay in Champion, I would chalk it up to each of the Digimon partners being made specifically for their human partners. They don't follow the same programming rules of other Digimon, since their evolution is largely tied to when the kids exhibit the trait they most represent.
