  • What a long, drawn out mess! In this installment of the project, we finally make some real progress. I go through the process of troubleshooting the CDI and stator, diagnosing the issue with the timing advance, and how I (FINALLY!) resolved it. I'm happy to say that the bike is now running like it should be!

    Thanks for the video! I have a 87 Big Bear 350 and its been down for almost 4 years have replaced Carb, CDI, Coil, Peacock, Fuel Lines, did a Valve job, checked the timing and now have bought a stator and waiting for my Mechanic to swap it in, hoping this will solve the problem! I bought this new and have it set up for doing jobs around the farm and really need it ! from watching your video mine ran just like yours did( no top end)

    You don’t have any back pressure from the exhaust pipe. Weld a plate over the the end of the pipe and drill a 1/2 inch hole in the plate. Ooops didn’t realize you put a proper pipe on it. Good job figuring it out.

    Bridge the brake switch on the left side handle bars, fallow it down and unhook it. After that connect the 2 wires you unhooked together but not the wire from the switch, the ones that are part or the wiring harness

    Hi again, apologies for my comment in part 3 as I didn't realise there was a part 4 where you had solved the issue.
    My issue persists whereby my 92 big bear struggles to start (occasionally backfiring ) and takes an awful lot of cranking to eventually start and when it does start it is a weak idle/firing. When I open the throttle is goes well. But it struggles to idle and the plug lands up sooted indicating that it is running rich. I am assuming the backfiring when trying to start is flooding. Are you able to tell me how to adjust the carb to idle less rich ? I can only see the fuel mixture screw which is a pain to adjust with the carb on the quad. Is there an air mixture screw or am I missing something? Great informative videos by the way!

    • @diymechanictv1233
      @diymechanictv1233  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That mixture screw is the only way that I know of to make any adjustment to the air/fuel mixture, unfortunately. After fooling with mine for so long, I ended up buying a replacement carburetor and once I got the ignition timing issue resolved, it has been running well.

    Make sure you check compression it's because of valve lashes right doesn't mean a valving leaking and if a valves leaking compression it'll never have any power

    Hey I just got this exact quad. I have some very small things wrong with it such as the gap in the small boot in the rear axle. You had this exact problem in your pt 1 video. Do you know where I can get a replacement? I also am trying to find a pull chord but having trouble finding a handle that will fit snug with this engine.

      They're great bikes! Not a real powerhouse but a good reliable workhorse.
      I ended up ordering the boot I needed from Partzilla.com. It's supposed to arrive by mail today, actually. I didn't look to see if they had pull start parts or not, but that'll be soon to follow on mine are well. Mine had all the parts but the pull start was full of mud and rusted the spring in half.
      Good luck with your project!

      @@diymechanictv1233 thank you. Did you ever fix the fuel leak issue. I have the same thing. Also to replace the boot don’t you have to take the entire back half out?

    • @diymechanictv1233
      @diymechanictv1233  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the back swing arm and axle have to come off the bike to replace this boot, but it really doesn't look to be that big a job. Maybe I'll shoot a quick video on how it is done.
      I never really saw it leak fuel. The PO said the petcock leaks, but I've never seen it leak once, so who knows...

      I am also working on a 1989 350 big bear, and have the same issue, sparks once then nothing, shut key off , turn back on, push start button engine turns over sparks once then nothing. Bought cheap caltric stator, cheap cdi and a Ricks coil. Still sparks only once. Do you have 2 trigger coils? Do you have 3 relays? Is it the cdi that switches from basic timing to advanced?

    • @diymechanictv1233
      @diymechanictv1233  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

  • @andrebrodeur3253
    @andrebrodeur3253 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    when you pull that carb off again,you should be able to disconnect the throttle cable at the carb. just pull the throttle lever in the carb back and slip out that little brass retainer at the end of the wire and it will just fall off so dont lose it. then you unscrew the nut just on the outside of the carb and the wire will pull through

    Brother you ain't got a spark problem You got a fuel problem now you need to check your compression and see what it is I'll tell you if it's the valves and the rings it ain't smoking so I wouldn't think it would be rings but it could be the carburetor it's definitely a fuel problem now some of them had a slight adjustment you could turn on that stator loosen up and turn it left or right and that could be out of whack
