  • Mealy bugs are a very common pest for houseplants and one of the easiest to deal with. In this video I talk about what mealy bugs are, how to find them, how to kill them, and to prevent them from coming back. Mealy bugs favorite meals (pun intended) are hoyas but they can be found on most species/families of houseplants. I share with you my neem oil spray recipe in this video, and explain the functions of each ingredient. This pesticide works well for other pests such as aphids, mites, and scale. I also discuss their symbiotic relationship with ants and how you can find them by following the ants on your plants. Lastly, mealy bugs can live on the leaves, but also in the roots, causing your plants to decline. The simple method I show you in this video is tried and proven kill them off and prevent them from returning.

    Excellent. Thank you for an entertaining but really informative treatment (pun only later intended ;-)) of a really timely topic. I've been struggling with mealy bugs. I think you may have told me how they got into my plants. Early in the summer, a lot of ants came into the house, and I found them all over my plants. I got rid of the ants, but I think it was after that that the mealy bugs became apparent. I've been keeping them at bay through vigilance, but they do tend to reappear. Now, I have a new plan. Thank you for another great video.

However, I am concerned with rotting my sanseverias by spraying down the crown like this. Also, how can you do this effectively on very full and large plants like the wandering jew? I had to just chop mine because I wanted to get rid of the soil. But there are sooo many leaves, how can I MAKE SURE they are gone right away? I do not want to keep losing plants because there are some missed.

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  ปีที่แล้ว

      You can spray large plants this way too. And do get their media soaked with neem oil mix like this as the roots can uptake the neem oil and up to the leaves. The pests would ingest these oils. I would repeat treatment in 1-2 weeks time to break their life cycle.

    Thanks for another great vid packed with info and tips. I think many of us now have a better idea how to deal with these nasty mealies. Yup some plants are more prone than others: hoyas and aglaonemas seem to attract more mealybugs. I think the best way to get rid of them is to spot them early when they're few and pluck/flush them off the plant before a full scale infestation has set in. But looks like your neem oil intervention is a wonderful treatment for serious infestations. Yeah I hate mealies too but at least they move rather slowly and there's quite a wide time gap window between early infestation and the fatal stage. Unlike plant public enemy no.1 - SPIDER MITES the absolute horror pest of plant collectors. Looking forward to your upcoming vid on how to exterminate these nasty little monsters that can kill a small plant overnight.

    how frequent do you spray pesticide on the leaves? and does the mealy bugs come back to attack the root sometime after they die? is mealybug attack on the root indicating healthy plants or just simply means the plants are not doing well hence prone to pest attack? My potted bell pepper plants and ghost chili are being attacked by soil mealy T.T

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Every 1-6 months depending on the species, the area they were kept in. there are two types of mealy bugs(potentially more) - ones living in roots and one on leaves. They always have a symbiotic relationship with ants so look for ants.

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Many reasons why they attack… plant health… your plant species… your environment (if they are tastier plants the mealy bugs will go there instead… your pest control measure… and some luck hehe
