- Aphids can be a real problem for your houseplants. They multiply and wreak havoc very quickly. I have a solution for you that will kill aphids on your houseplants in as little as 1 treatment and I have had very good success with this. In fact, this solution will work for any soft body bugs like aphids, spider mites, russet mites, and thrips and can be completely natural if using chemical free soap. No pesticides or other chemicals are necessary.

Good video. I remember my grand parents in the 50s/60's always had a tub of Fels-Naptha and water mixed in a tub for their garden to take care of bugs. My dad used it so it became my go to. I had a issue with Fungus Knats in January with my indoor cuttings of hydrangeas. Two treatments and no more problems. I just mix in a spray bottle and keep handy. Been around for forever and has a lot of other uses. Naptha is no longer an ingredient as it was found to cause cancer but still kills the bugs.
Our parents and grandparents used a lot of things that they probably shouldn't have lol.
your problem was overwatering and the gnats are a symptom of that;they don't show up if you don't overwater

This is a great trick that really works, I also use it if I buy a new plant it gets a treatment & is watched & checked until I consider it safe to put close to my collection. Thanks for reminding me , I haven't added anything yet this year. I also use this mixture outside on roses.

Have you tried aspirin + water yet? I’ve also read it’s pretty good, but haven’t tried it yet and am curious. That said my solution smells super yummy which is a bit of a pick me up when you’re the avenging angel of aphid death.
Thanks Mike for the tips! I did this on my busy Lizzie which was covered with aphids and looking terrible. After a couple of days it started to look healthier and now it's flowering like crazy again.
Awesome! Sometimes you have to go back and do a second treatment in 4 or 5 days as new eggs might hatch but usually 2 treatments will do the trick if the first one didn't. Then just keep an eye on things from there.

Hi Mike, thank you for this great tip. Where I live I have to grow my flowers in pots. I had an infestation of aphids and spider mites last year. I used neem oil but with up to 30 pots it got very expensive trying to eradicate them. I also had these white little aphid type bugs. Not sure what they were. I'm going to try your solution now while the plants are emerging in hopes that any aphid winter survivors get killed. I also had spider mites and aphid on my houseplants because I had them outside. I can't wait to get started.

BEST thing i ever did and u should to is not do this soap water because its mot very effective. buy ladybugs. i bought thousands and let them go on my plants and within 3 weeks they eradicated all the aphids.
Spraying off, drowning in water & drops of dishsoap, & spraying w/ Neem or mix here. This is a 1st for me. Well, 2nd, because I tossed my covered arrowhead & afr. violets when noticing 2 mos. ago. Darn. I could’ve saved my plants. Live & learn.
I now use a combination of dish soap and sulfur in the same mix. I have a video about using sulfur too. It’s good stuff.

I saw Nigel Saunders do the same thing for aphids and mites but for some reason it never quite clicked within my head to do the same thing. He does it often too but never made a dedicated video on the topic. Now I'm convinced and gonna try. I'm currently battling some damn spider mites.
This solution will definitely work for you. It may take 2 treatments if the infestation is really bad.

This solution works great, give it a try. I had a bad infestation last winter and thought I was going to lose a bunch of plants but this soap and water saved them all and eradicated the aphids.
@@MikeKincaid79 Hi luv, my aphids are in a MASSIVE Oak tree AND another Oak tree that touches it the is across the street!
I get the aphid spit on everything in the front yard then in the summer wasps arrive for the sweet drops on everything on the ground.
The arborist wanted to hit my tree but said it was pointless since the other tree is on city property.
So I am open to any ideas other than spraying religiously up into a tree that I can't nearly saturate and have to treat plants on the ground aa well.
I wonder why no one talks about Diatomaceous earth mixed with a plant-based dish detergent?
I fing the Seventh Generation plant based detergent to be very drying on hands but effective for this purpose.

It works! I also made a video using sulfur to kill them. I now combine the soap and sulfur, using them as one solution.

I always worry about peroxide in the soil. I know it's very little, works great for gnats. If we use regularly, do you think we should be replacing soil more often?
I love peroxide for this reason too. Great for gnat control.
Mike, i have aphids and fungus gnats in greenhouse. How much peroxide should I mix please?
I emulsify the neem oil with dishsoap and spray the combo. That being said, I find spider mites troublesome. I read that they have hydrophobic webs that protect them, so those webs need to be disrupted before spraying. I use a old paintbrush, but it sure is hard for a lot of plants.
With the sulfur spray, I've eradicated spider mites with 1 treatment. They really don't like that stuff.

I spend 11 dollars on some chemical that didn't work now I'm trying this and I have seen some plants owners used soap and alcohol to clean there plants so it should work with water and soap.. thank you I just soap then with water let see how they do.also you can buy those pumps in homedepo ❤😊
Since this video I started combining the soap and sulfur in part 2. It works great. I don’t rinse it off though. Keep the plants out of direct sun after treatment.

I had my first infestation that I noticed yesterday on some otherwise beautiful purple hull pea plants. Knowing of the many uses of Dawn liquid I just guessed it might work. Mixed a few drops in a 5 or 6 ounce hand spray bottle and directed the spray just to the infested area. Today? Dead. But I will use your tip of spraying the ground. I can see where that would be beneficial. But you verified what I figured out and it worked. Thankfully I got them early and they had not infected but a small area.

They only infested the one plant, and the dawn did make the leaves a bit brown where I sprayed them so I may have had the mixture a bit strong, but it did not kill the plant, only the leaves that were infested, and that may well have been from the aphids. But they were all dead the next day and there was no further infestation of the garden at all. The best purple hull harvest we've had so far! Already got this years crop coming, but only about 4-6 inches tall yet, so no infestation to worry about. But I am going to spray some dawn around each plant in a day or so on the ground as suggested and we'll see if that keeps them off the plant to start with. Isn't youtube wonderful! We all learn from each other, and at 78, I can tell you, you are never to old to learn things. I traveled and entertained people all my life so never got the chance to do any gardening until I retired from the road, but have had a garden now each year for about 5 years. I love it!

This is my first time ever to grow some peppers and I'm doing it in a container and it made me so sad yesterday seeing those little buggers all over my plant. “How to kill aphids without pesticides”. Dish detergent is accepted as safe... I don’t see it as natural. That said (there’s always a wise guy!)... this will be my go-to technique this season. THANK YOU!
Wise guy George, LOL. I figured that if people had a hard time using standard dish soap, they could always buy organic soap. This works great and has saved many houseplants here. I hope you find it as successful as I have.
@@MikeKincaid79 Aphids harmed our herb garden last year. This will be our new weapon. We didn’t use the herbs after the tough stuff we sprayed last year. By contrast... dish detergent is natural! BTW: we’re propagating a bunch of rhodos using your techniques, too. We love your channel!
Mike I've used Sulphur on houseplant bugs, but I bought a container that let's me disperse a mist of the dry dust. It worked well on spider mites & mealy bug. Perhaps your system is more surefire, but I liked the ease of just spraying the dust.
Yep, as you know, the dust can be sprayed dry.
I use this solution regularly but with oil added. The mix is one tsp dishsoap, one tsp oil, one cup water. I usually make a gallon at a time. It does work! 😁

As far as I understand, insects also don't like oil in general, especially with strong odours, so I would also add a tablespoon of non-refined vegetable oil to strengthen the effect.

It's also a good idea to spray the pot. Those little bugs 🐛 hide everywhere! Sometimes I just dunk the pot in soapy water in the sink. The shower is a great place to spray large plants or a lot plants at once, easy to rinse them off later and then dry them. Happy bug hunting!

This is a great solution, (and the solution is great), but you must kill every last Aphid as they are Parthenogenetic and do not need a male Aphid to achieve fertilisation, you must also avoid dish soap that contains salt, this is added in manufacture to produces a thicker solution as housewives perceive a thicker dish soap to be better, and excellent tip! After a lot of searching last year, I found a recipe consisting of tea tree soap, peppermint soap, peroxide, alcohol and water. Most of my plants are indoor hydroponics. I grow mostly salad greens, but experimented with tomatoes and bell peppers. Only the bell peppers got aphids on them. I couldn't spray them because the spray would end up on the grow unit machines, the tables and the walls. I made the soap solution in a large bowl and took each plant out of the hydroponic unit and dunked it upside down a few times in the solution until covered, set it aside to drip dry, then put it back into the unit. This worked well and the aphids disappeared. But every new pepper plant had to get this treatment or the aphids would return. I'm now growing the peppers outside in containers on the patio and the aphids will attack those as well. But I can use the sprayer out there. Your solution of dish soap sounds simpler than the recipe I used. But I do only use non-toxic dish soap. I wouldn't use anything else on my plants. Thanks for the information.

Now I know thanks to you. One question, with them being outside do I have to worry about the lawn reinfesting the plants?
You will see small aphid infestations outdoors occasionally but not as frequently. Outdoors there are more beneficial bugs and lots of competition so they are kept in check. I usually don't do anything about them outdoors but this same solution will work. If you're really wild, you can try the leaves with the aphids, lol.

Thanks so much for a simple, inexpensive and available solution to these buggers__is this also as effective on mealy bugs? That's usually my problem when I have succulents.
On another subject, my aunt was wondering if it's possible to root hibiscus cuttings? I told her to test it out__she was also unaware they produce "hips", like roses.
She also has a fig tree she started from a cane from a different "zone" and was wondering if the slightly cooler temps where she is may be a factor why the figs have not grown to maturity/size the past 2 seasons (her fig 'tree' is only about 3-4 yrs. old). I suggested she subscribe to your channel and try things you've had results with through trial and error. 😺
Btw, you may not recall but, I mentioned to you about 1 1/2 yrs. ago that our previous apartment building owner had cut down the fig tree outside of our apartment, and in an attempt to 'save' it I took a few cuttings from the roots before they took the trunk out of the ground. It took all summer for roots to grow enough for me to plant, and only one cutting survived.
Well, I'm happy to report that "Marcus" is still alive and doing well! Even after one of my cats kept biting a leaf or two and, at one point, actually broke the main stem, I was finally able to keep it out of his reach and after reconnecting the broken edges, wrapped a band-aid around it! Amazingly, all my efforts worked, new leaves keep popping out and a few have died off but the tree is slowly growing taller and branching out a bit! The only problem I have now is tiny ants that have made their way into some of my plants cuz I had some small ones on the windowsill and the ants came in through the windows. It's been a real pain keeping up and erraticating them as much as possible but I will have to transplant Marcus into fresh soil soon because I still find a few ants when I water well. As a reminder, this is all indoors! No outdoor availability, and have desire to grow a few simple food plants so am planning on purchasing grow lights, etc. for my living room. I have to be careful not to overstep my boundaries with the manager. 😱😏
Anyway, just wanted to ask about mealy bugs, my aunt's hibiscus and figs, and give update re: the fig tree I saved and is growing inside my apartment.

I just got so freaked out. I sprayed tea tree oil. And yes it hurt some leaves. But the bug was killing the plant! So I took the risk. So far so good.

I’m currently using Dr Bronner’s Castile soap for my aphids. I have a problem with Chilli thrips too. Will this help with that problem as well? I’m using Spinosad.
Yes, but you have to stay on top of it with the thrips. They are hard to get every one and breed quickly. You should spray every few days for a few weeks until you get them all.
True, indeed , just dish soap will kill them. I once used it in my grapes aphids.

Ok, I guess I have to be that person. Dish soap is a 'chemical', and when used like this, a pesticide. Also, the vast majority of dish soaps are not natural. Effective? Yes. Less risky than conventional OTC pesticides? Yes.

Technically it’s the oils + acid that are doing to job. I was always told to use castille soap, not a detergent as those ARE chemicals.
@@melissasullivan1658 they are ALL chemicals. We are made of chemicals. It is the surfactants and water that is killing the aphids. Castile soap is a surfactant, so use that if you wish. Just remember that it is also a chemical.

This is much easier, cheaper, and a better solution overall.
Are we suppose to leave the soapy water on the plants, won't it burn the leaves if in direct sunlight or the residue from the day before?
No, it doesn't burn leaves. Oil will burn the leaves though. If outdoors, I would apply in the evening and leave it on until dry. If you apply water during the day then the water magnifies the sun and can burn the leaves that way.

What about if you have 40 trees and plant? It’s gonna be so hard to treat him the way you are teaching us.
You're right, but it'll be harder if they all die.
I did this with ALDI dish soap and sorayed it on all the little starting seedlings sprouting and they all got eatten the next day. Never worked lost them all.
So good advice BUT my aphids are all over my fragile seedlings & dish soap, even very diluted, will kill seedlings.
If you've got aphids all over your seedlings then they are probably too far gone.
I didn't give up but I did introduce about 50 lady bugs. Though most died 🤷♀️. I've lost a few seedlings, but most are still growing, as I started feeding them a very diluted liquid fertilizer.
They're struggling but I can deal with these aphids better once I get the trays outside to harden off.

Never tried it on seedlings so if you do then try it on just a few before proceeding with the whole batch.

I suppose you could, but I've never used it on outdoor vegetables. It might cause issues with sunburn or wilt.

I tried the baking soda and cooking oil route. I find myself applying it daily, like I’m fighting a war.
I keep finding tons of them on my Hoyas, not other plant, and they only attach to the very newest growth. I am tired of flicking them off. Brews and oils have not helped.

I’ve also read that I coated aspirin dissolved in water works well too. Haven’t tried it.
My insecticide this year (I drew the line when aphids attacked my newly sprouted overwintered peppers) is peppermint liquid castille soap (found on Amazon) + essential oils of rosemary, eucalyptus and lavender. The last two is just because it smells pretty, but the first two ingredients kill and then repel. I do the soap light though that it takes two sessions as I really don’t want to harm other visiting pollinators. But man do aphids flex their power to demolish quickly.

This will work. You may need a couple treatments over a few days to kill any newly hatched eggs. Also, you may want to wash them off with water first if they are heavily infested. Good luck.

No in my experience, and I’ve sprayed a lot of plants with dish soap.

Mike, have you ever used this solution outside, to kill or control whiteflies on garden plants or ornamental shrubs?
I don't typically get these problems outside and if I do, they're isolated. I think it's because there are more predators outside.

Wouldn't all that soap in the soil throw off the pH and harm the plants?
Nope, been doing this for years. I don't constantly spray though, I just use it once or twice in a week until I've killed the bugs and ended their life cycle. If you're worried, you can water the soil well after the treatment is done and then fertilize again.
You don't rinse the plant...just let it stay on the leaves? I have peppermint Castile ..is that strong enough? Ty!
Not sure about the Castile but yes, I leave it on the plant.
farmscaping your property with nectar flowers as per the seasons and some early blooms will allow the predatory insects to come. oh and also if you create a bug motel :P

Dawn dish soap neem oil mint oil best ever. Management plant marigolds in sage near neighboring plants. Was taught this 30yrs ago and still holding strong. Great vid keep the knowledge dropping. P.s Aphid eggs just add lil 80% rubbing alchol to your solution.
The rubbing alcohol sounds like a good tip. I like hydrogen peroxide for the roots and eggs in the soil.
@@MikeKincaid79 peroxide is a double edge sword. Great sanitizer for plants,but if you use benaficial microbes in bacteria it will kill it. I use mykos in azos in combo with my food i feed my plants so peroxide is kinda a no for me lol
Yeah, how do I get this all over my huge houseplants that I can't heft outside? They're covered with sticky crud from those little bugs.
Sorry to hear that, Olga. I'd find a way to get it outside and hose it down, then use this solution several times over about a week or 2. You may need to wait until warmer weather, if the plant can make it that long.

If the soapy water doesn't kill eggs after the first treatment what's the difference then from hosing them of off the plant? You will repeat the process as many times as required until they cannot lay eggs and all the eggs are already hatched. That seems to be true for soapy water or hosing them off. Am i missing something here?
That's a really good question and something I hadn't considered. Dang, that's a "mind blown" moment, lol. I might have to try this and report back on it. Now I just need to find a plant with a lot of aphids on it.
What about the entire soil, don't they get into the roots, too?
The soap and sulfur will handle that too.
