Freehand Chainsaw Milling - Turning Logs Into Lumber
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 7 พ.ค. 2024
- After cutting down a huge spruce, I've decided to make 2x12 boards from it. In this episode I try freehand chainsaw milling for the first time. It went quite well and I am surprised at how fast and easy it is to make the cuts. After cutting a few slabs off the log to get it to the right thickness, I'm able to cut a 2x12 in 5-6 minutes after doing the initial scoring cut. Have this rough lumber around the cabin is going to be very useful! If I'm able to develop a better technique and clean up the cuts a bit then I should be able to use this lumber for the firewood shack. Perhaps a chainsaw mill will be better, I'll have to compare the two methods side by side.
God bless!
They look straighter than what you can get at Home Depot!!
Hahaha good one! Thanks for watching.
Your boards look good!
On the clean white wood, you could snap a chalkline to guide cutting. Those Oregon hipper teeth can make short work of jour string like greased lightning.

I bought a mill that clamps to the blade and slides on a 2x6 that's screwed to the log! It's pretty good! But i need to buy a ripper chan for it! I've freehanded a few logs, too! It challenging!!! But fun!
You definitely should invest in a chain saw mill! With the amount of trees you have nearby, you'll never need to buy lumber again.
Agreed!
Agreed!
You bet I'll be using one soon. Thanks for watching!
Ol' eagle eye Kusk 😉 Great job eyeballing it, I'd never attempt that but then again I'm not that great with a chainsaw. Those portable chain saw mills are pretty cool, see them used a lot off grid. The bridge will be looking good in no time, real 2X12's too. Always a good watch, stay safe. See ya soon.
I couldn’t balance on top of that log 😉
I'll definitely be trying a chainsaw mill soon. Thanks for watching!
You are absolutely living the dream. I've used saws probably more than the average man but never attempted cutting a board. Awesome job young man. I still look forward to anything you want to share.
Thanks for watching!
🙏🙏👍👍Another great vid Ryley
Thanks, Wayne!!
Time to start building a new cabin/storage house from all the trees there. Long term project!
That's a awesome job. Looks good
Thanks for watching!
@@KuskWild you're welcome. You have some very interesting videos.
Well done Ryley!
Thanks!
Loved your workmanship, nice to see that beautiful tree being repurchased and you will still be able to admire it on the bridge, you need firewood but this is a more better way to use the tree.❤
Well dang, now I don't get to watch you whack that tree with an axe! Nice call. Those are some real pretty bridge planks!
There's still plenty of axe swinging for me to do. Thanks for watching!
Well done sir. Amazing how this went from a dangerous white knuckle adventure to lumber for your bridge. I’ve cut a board or two on my mill. I like these kind of videos. I enjoy the process. Good luck and stay safe out there 👍👍
Ok so I need to know, what was your childhood like and what lead you to enjoy the outdoors so much? You said "It's a lot of fun"... that's not a typical statement for many people in regards to a lot of what you do for fun, and even more-so in regards to creating your own lumber from timber you felled yourself. Basically I want to know how others influenced you so I and my hubby can do similar for our little dude.
Keep up the amazing work and thanks for bringing us along!
I'm very blessed to have the family that I do. I grew up learning about hunting, trapping, fishing, bushcraft, and all other kinds of outdoors activities. The outdoors have been my passion for as long as I can remember. It really comes down to my parents supporting me and giving me the opportunity to explore my interests.
Thanks for watching!
Those look good!
Thanks!
Very impressive. I could spend five times the time you took, and I'd still get them nowhere near that even
I was surprised they turned out half decent! Thanks for watching!
Really enjoying this series! Enjoy the woods!
Very cool my friend😎
So I usually make it a rule not to offer suggestions, but I can’t help myself here. Once you get the boards down on the bridge apply used motor oil on it every year. It costs nothing and the alternatives are like $30 per gallon. I have oiled my dock and stairs going to the water for 30 years and the lumber is still very healthy. And after it soaks in it is NOT slippery. I started oiling my wooden smokehouse I made out of pallet wood and it is a gorgeous golden color.
Any danger of the oil washing off from rain/snow and getting into the water?
@@KuskWild good point. The wood soaks it up fairly quickly. I suppose if it rained quickly after the application it could.
really good job !
A good day indeed.
I’ve saw some guys in Labrador make some very respectable lumber with a chain saw mill built over a cradle for the log. One fellow used two scissor jacks from a car, one under each end of the log so that it was level for the cut. Worked great and was simple.
Sounds like a good system! I certainly want to do more milling so I'll have to get a good setup figured out. Thanks for sharing!
How's the back? I should think that working the saw bent over is far worse than picking up split firewood!
Nice job!!!
WOW Ryan!! That was remarkable and incredibly resourceful!! I see one of those makeshift chainsaw saw mills in your future!
Though you’re remarkably accurate for eyeballing it! 🙂

Refresh my memory, where are you located?
Alberta, Canada.
Do you happen to follow surviving ringworm?
Husky 372XP around $1400.00 plus 28”bar, 2 sets of chain’s and chain guard $300 roughly!
Reviews online for the Holzfforma are not the best but the price difference is substantial. What’s your bar length?
The price is why I bought my G372XP. I'm running a 28" bar. It's my first time running a long bar but so far I've really been enjoying it.
@@KuskWild I think I’m going to bite the bullet on her! Just figurine out where I should purchase one here in Ontario .
Any suggestions?
And thanks for your time Kyle
What’s the model of your husky
I wish it was a husky. It's a clone saw. Holzfforma G372XP. It cost a quarter of the price of a husky and so far it's been running quite nicely.
What is the point
I use a CARPENTERS chalk line. You don't listen, reving your chainsaw shows your lack of willing to do better by learning from others advice. Nothing you can teach me, unsubbed.
You would do the broader community a favor if you unsubbed from TH-cam. Wow, just wow…
Who make you cry? 😂
