This review is for the new Excalibur 6-tray Digital Performance Dehydrator.
Does this mean that I recommend you getting rid of your Cosori or other machine? Not even a little. And in all transparency, I will no longer be recommending Cosori for reasons of my own - it doesn't mean you shouldn't keep using and loving your Cosori! But when I went to begin looking at many of the new machines that were coming on the market, I was surprised by Excalibur's lower-priced models and how they've tried to meet their market, I was pleasantly surprised by how this machine performed! I'm really happy with it and am glad I found a great machine that I love. Are there other great machines out there? Of course. And in the future, I'll buy more and review them.

My reason for not recommending Cosori is my machine's fan stopped near the one year mark and I couldn't get help from their crummy customer service.
VERY UPSET THAT NOW YOUR PROMOTING A DIFFERENT MACHINE!! YOU MUST BE GETTING PAID WELL, I BOUGHT THE COSORI ON YOUR GREAT REVIEWS! 🤬😠😡🤬
DISSAPOINTED IN YOU NOW
I was just about to go with Cosori because of your other videos. I went to the Excalibur website to look at the older 9 tray (out of stock) before I found your channel and there were several reviews saying their customer service is absolutely terrible, most people saying they can't even get a hold of them or can't get a call back. Customer service is very important to me..have you had that experience with them? I need to decide quickly which one I want, I just went raw vegan and in order to maintain I'm gonna need to make raw crackers, wraps, "breads", kale chips and raw vegan "burgers" looks like this one might be the best choice? Do you have a link for silicone sheets or will any on Amazon do? Just a tad worried my cat will sit on the top and break the glass, bit anyways please let me know about the customer service. And I just noticed your code expired?😔 aw man, they should have gave you that doesn't expire. Do you have a new one?🙏
Your review is good but, I love my Cosori.
Wow - Finally Excalibur brought their machines into modern times. That took a hot minute.
Excalibur allll the wayyyyy 😁👍
I love my Cosori, that I purchased largely based on your recommendation. I also love my big old nine-tray Excalibur. And I’m still reasonably fond of my first dehydrator, a round Nesco with extra trays. Not kicking any of my workhorses to the curb 😁
Exactly! Who can afford it?
i have one nesco with 32 trays that is over 40 years old and still going strong! but, i bought three more of those, and ALL THREE MELTED DOWN, and one STARTED ON FIRE!! lucky it didnt burn the house down!! that's when i bought my Septrees. but i do still use that old Nesco in season!
Agree. Love my old 9 tray Excalibur. Will use it till it dies.
A review from you, is something we’ll all pay attention to!
I've been laying my plastic sheets on my veggies to keep from blowing around, works like a charm.
I like that top window. However, I can’t get rid of my Cosori.
I’m sure this Excalibur works great but I love my Cosori very much and is perfect for me!!
Love your channel. You are my pied piper for dehydrating.
Perfect timing - I’ve been in the market for a new dehydrator… I still have my old round plastic tray one…thanks for the review!
Thanks Darcy!! I’ll have to watch this later!
Nice machine. Thank you for your review 💕
You are the best Darcy!
I have two 9 tray Excaliburs love them!
Great review.
Thank you!!! I know your a passionate about dehydrating.
This was a great review. I have a small excalibur model. I need to get better at using that one before I upgrade. Thanks for this great review.
I have an old plastic excalibur dehydrator. It is the first and only dehydrator I have ever used. It is only 5 trays. I actually bought it at Ollie's a couple years ago for only $60. I was so excited. I do not dehydrate a lot of food yet. I dehydrated celery last week and loved saving my celery. Use what you have until it doesn't work for you any longer. We are trying to save money not spend money unnecessarily. Have a Blessed Week.
No one is asking you to spend money unnecessarily. If I do a review on a machine, it is for those looking for one and wanting to know how well they work. Not to get you to buy a machine you don't need.
I love so much your videos! Since I’ve got my dehydrating machine that I’m watching you. I’m an honest person and I love that you are too, we have the good and the bad in your reviews of products and technics, simply the truth. Not the usual marketing way, this is how I like it. I’m going to take a look at it for sure when I’m going to be ready to change my “the base” Hamilton Beach dehydrator 😁
I have an excalibur from 8 years ago. the 9 tray. Love it. But i think i might have to get this new one your showing. love the features. metal trays, and the glass top to look into it. so cool.
Nah. I'm sticking with my Consori
I am looking for a dehydrator since finding your channel….i will check out the other videos so I am knowledgeable about what’s on the market….thank you so much!❤❤❤
I love my Cosori!
Love the front window but I'm afraid my old Excalibur is still working fine...Darn!
LOL If it fit my dryer space, I'd likely still be using mine indoors, too, but when we had to replace the dryer, it no longer fit, so it's relegated to the garage.
I GOT THE BIG OLD ONE AND I CANT JUSTIFY A SECOND ONE BUT IF I WAS EVER GOING TO GET A SMALLER ONE THIS WOULD BE THE ONE FOR SURE. MY EXCALIBER IS A WORK HORSE AND WORTH EVERY PENNY I PAID FOR IT AND THEN SOME.
This is only smaller in size of height (and a little in width. It's got almost the same footprint....just 3 fewer trays.
@@ThePurposefulPantry THAT IS EXACTLY WHY THIS WOULD BE THE ONE I LOVE THIS SO MUCH AND I DONT OWN IT LOL
I love my old Excalibur with the dial and glass door even though you have to set the door on or take it off. My Excalibur is so much better than any other brand or configuration I have had, especially the kind with round, stackable trays. If I needed a new dehydrator, I would be hard pressed not to buy another old-school, 2 dial Excalibur, even with the crazy door.
My big old onewasmy mothers which she bought in the 80's. It wasn't used from 1991-2012 when I got it from my dad. The plastic trays are breaking so I just ordered this one.
@@brendahallmcdonald1292 I bought my Excalibur dehydrator in 1978 for $49.95 from JC Penney’s the price tag is still on it. It’s not fancy but it works great! 5 trays, black plastic door that sides on in front with the fan inside. Also have a consori that my younger sister gifted me ( I love it because I can set the time and temp, but I would never get rid of my first dehydrator! I’ve even made yogurt in my old one ❤️)
That's a sharp looking dehydrator. And thank you for the information . I'm looking to get another dehydrator . The 2 I got not big enough for all the stuff I do .
This is a nice looking machine and I like that door. I have the 9 tray Excalibur that I should use way more than I do. I bought three greenstalk vertical planters so crossing my fingers that I’ll have a lot of produce to preserve in a few months.
Thanks for the review! I love my old Excalibur, rattles and all, but I do love the glass door and top on this one. Being able to see how my food is doing without opening the door would be awesome.
Looks like a great machine!
Wow! I have just got to get me one of these! My old Nabisco gave me 7 good years but now it’s way over heating my potato’s looked over cooked yet went back to looking normal when cooking but yuk I don’t want to chance once my harvest is coming in that I want to dehydrate, plus hubby is requesting jerky . Thank you for showing this
Thank you for your honest reviews . I am in the process of buying my first dehydrator, this was perfect timing. I will also watch your other videos about the comparison of dehydrators. I am so happy to have found your channel, as I have a lot to learn!
Hope you find one you love!
Oh how I’d love to get to get one of these!
I like the expanded lower temp range and the metal trays! If my big ole Excalibur ever fails, I’ll get this one! Or maybe I’ll get one for myself for my birthday. Thanks!
That top window is very nice.
Glad you found something new that you like & will use. I still have my "C" in its box. I tend to procrastinate on using new things.
Appreciate your enthusiasm 😊.
I'm going to challenge you to get it out and experiment with it!
I’m sure if this was available when I was looking to replace my old workhorse excaliber I would have gone this route ..but I do love my Cosori and it is soooo quiet .. but they are all good and do the job .. I will keep it in mind if I ever need to replace the one I have now … thanks for the reviews
Love the review and I'm glad you like it! I have two 9 tray Excaliburs and personally I'm happy with them. There are some features on this (that top glass in particular) that would be nice, but I don't like digital anything. I prefer manual controls and purchase things with that option when possible. Went thru a phase where I wanted everything digital, but found that they tend to go wonky at the most inconvenient time, and the repairs are generally as costly as just buying a replacement. Yes, it is more likely for large appliances, but it is an issue. When you live where power outages are frequent, or power surges are fairly common, that becomes even more of a determining factor. For us it was lightening strikes (we lived on top of a sand hill), and one strike cost us every electronic in the home ~ and all of our neighbors had the same problem. I went full manual on everything at that point (stove, frig, countertop appliances, phones, etc. ... and the computers went on a rather expensive-but-worth-it backup system). That was a costly mess for people on a fixed/retired income. Insurance was useless btw. And ~ the single thing I did not have to replace WAS my Excalibur even though it was running at the time of the lightening strike.
Great review. I have a Cosori and I’m happy with it, but would have gotten this one if it was available at the time. Love your channel!
Yeah - this just came out last fall.
My invasion just quit on me when I was in the middle of dehydrating. I’ve been checking out all the dehydrators trying to decide which one to buy. You’ve given a great recommendation 😊
Cosori has that reputation, bad. Check to make sure it's not the fuse that needs to be replaced. That's a lot cheaper of a fix than a new machine.
Thank you! I just purchased the dehydrator. I’ve been watching your videos for a week now trying to decide which is best. This video came at the perfect time!
Glad it was helpful!
I have an older 9 tray Excalibur and it’s great but I would love to get this! It addresses most of the things that I’m not crazy about with my current model. I like the tip about putting the mesh screen on the top of the tray to help with clearance. I will be putting this on my wishlist.
Yep - the mesh thing was a game changer when I figured out how to make it work with my old machine - and it works with other machines with low-clearance, too!
Darcy, literally signed on in order to check out the prices on a new Cosori, as I finally played TAPS for my old round Nesco. I have one of the old Excalibur square 5 tray that is still kicking it and outperforming both the Nesco and my 5 tray oval Cuisinart. Must do some thinking on this. Also, thanks for sharing the discount link, just in case...
THAT WINDOW IS COOL, all of them should have that, otherwise mine thats not a big brand has 12 shelves and i love it, its a workhorse...oddly you cant get them anymore!
My first project is frozen mixed vegetables. Canning right now, but dh is next. 😊 stay positive @
found you on Pinterest so want this machine i’ve never dehydrated anything yet lololol thank you this so so cool.
I have a 23 year old 9-tray Excalibur that has been well used. I'm just waiting for it to die on me! I'm starting to look around at other options for when that happens. I am really happy with Excalibur, so this is at the top of my list of potential candidates. Thank you! 🌷 Michele
Love, love, love your channel sooooooo much. I decided to buy my first dehydrator and your reviews are super helpful for me. I live in Europe and will go with a Vevor 700Watts with 6 trays for € 159,- at Amazon. The Excalibur is very expensive here and the newest model is not even available in my country yet.
I’m looking at the Vevor 1,000 watt. How do u like the one you got.
I’ve got a double door Excalibur many trays , haven’t used yet brand new . Also the 9 and 6 tray ones. Work like a charm. Never ever an issue. Less than $500 for all three. Last two over 5 years old work horses. Love them but wanted this one cause double doors. lol always wait for deals. Your site rocks but I like old faith ones. Can count on them ❤
My original 9 tray is at least 10 years old and works great. It's just so big for where I can put it I have to have something else in here for everyday use. Thus it's now the garage machine for overflow work.
I appreciate that you BOUGHT it... and it was not sent to you to review.. I am leary of any of those kinds of reviews because it was given to them and I feel they have to say nice things about the product! Thank you and the next time I am in the market to buy a different dehydrator.. I will seriously consider this one
Even if I was given it, I'd always be honest (like I was with the Sahara - it was one I was given) - I don't do reviews to make the company happy ;)
I have this dehydrator and love it.
How has your experience been with their customer service? I saw Several reviews saying the customer service is horrible and that you can't even get hold of them.
@@reecea.419 I haven’t needed to use the customer service. Sorry I can’t be more helpful.
@@Just-Nikki ok thank you
I just bought a bottom of the line dehydrator to see if I like the process. Right now I’m wanting to make lemon powder. Fingers crossed!!!
Good luck!
i purchased a kwasyo dehydrator 12 stainless steel tray for 150 dollars and have had very good luck with it just as good or better than top brand names and alot cheaper also i needed one with alot of trays i do like the one you got just to exspensive and not many trays
I'm glad you found one that works for you.
Wow. Nice!,,,
I too was influenced to buy cosori because of your review. Thanks??!!?
And that's fine. I never asked you to switch it - I even said, specifically - if you're happy with your machine - awesome. This is for those who are looking to get a machine, and I happen to prefer it.
i bough several Septree dH...i loved them that much. the only issues are: 1. the timer is limited to 24 hours max, which i really dislike, and 3. they are 1500 watts, so i have to have them all over the house to be on different circuits. maybe someday i will be able to fix that one. and i am green that that one is 80 hour timer!! many of my runs are longer than the 24 hours, and if i dont remember to reset.....there you are.otherwise, my Septrees are great, but again, it doesnt really matter which you end up buying, theres ALWAYS a newer one coming out!!
Yep - and what matters most is that you actually use it!
Thanks for the great review. I am trying to decide between this model and the 6 tray select model. The performance differences seem to be the two stage temp setting and the countdown display lights. Does the digital display also show the time left or is it just the progress lights that let you know how much time is left? (Although I know you always tell us not to pay attention to the time 😉). Thanks so much for your guidance.
The difference is really the glass top - the other stuff doesn't matter ;) Go with what your budget can afford.
I want one 😅😮
Thank you SO MUCH for this review. I have 2 Excaliburs... I wonder if I need a 3rd? 🤔
lol - no, you don't, unless you're doing a ton of food - and then I'd look at getting one really big one :D If I had room for a large machine, I'd definitley get a Benchmark or Cabelas huge machine...I just have no space for it.
@@ThePurposefulPantry Me neither. My house is less than 900 sq ft. You inspire me to do more dehydrating.
After fighting to hand wash the plastic trays on my old Excalibur I would gladly buy this new model... and the door/windows are a bonus.
You still have the handwash the stainless trays if you get something on them. The way the mesh on it is created (as with most stainless steel trays) things can easily stick to it and it's hard to get off sometimes. And if you have a small sink - then even harder. SUre - you can put these into the dishwasher if you have one tall enough to fit them, but if stuff is truly stuck on, even the dishwasher isn't going to remove it.
@@ThePurposefulPantry Good points. I am the dishwasher but good to know that things stick to the steel trays harder than on the plastic. Makes sense. Thank you for all the info too Darcy.
I use Shout (laundry enzyme spot treatment) for cleaning stuff stuck on my trays. Towel on the counter, tray(s) on the towel, spray. The gunk will usually soften in a few minutes and easily wash off (a soft brush is helpful). Works for lots of hard to clean issues in the kitchen.
Thank you Darcy! ❤🙏
@@lauramanion3131thanks for this tip. Good to know!
I would like your advice on the two separate temperature settings that are supposed to prevent things from completely drying on the outside while trapping moisture inside.
I think it's marketing language ;)
Since you have tried so many different dehydrators you are the problem to ask. I have a Cosori and it has had its own issues but costumer service was awesome! I’m looking at getting one to use outside for garlic, onions and other smelling stuff 😂 what one would you recommend? Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge
A Nesco stackable. But with all of them - read the manuals to make sure you can use it outside. Not all would be appropriate.
I love all your videos but I don’t see anything specific that would make me pay $120 -$150 more for this dehydrator. I have two Cosori dehydrators for the price of that one. I dehydrate everything and Cosori does a great job.
And just like I said, I'm not asking you to ;) Have fun with your Cosori's.
@@ThePurposefulPantry didn’t say you did ask me. I am reacting to your review of that Dehydrator over Cosori because you had “ditching the Cosori” on it. Have fun with your new dehydrator.
Darcy, when you put the plastic mesh sheet on top of the greens do you leave it there or slide it off?
I just leave it on.
I just found out I missed the sale. Oh well, more waiting for another sale....I was looking at the other 6 tray model without the glass tray and we just decided we could afford it on sale. Missed it! I'm the April fool today.
They have sales often - and keep an eye on prices at Amazon - sometimes they'll be on quick sales there, too.
@@ThePurposefulPantry Ooh! I will keep checking, thanks!
I have been thinking about getting a dedicated dehydrator. Up until now I’ve used my instant pot air fryer, which has a dehydrating mode, but your videos have inspired me to expand. My kitchen space is very limited so I’m looking for something that I can use out on my screened porch (I live in south FL). Would this be appropriate for that setting? If not, can you recommend one that would? Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge, it’s much appreciated!
Not in the weather if you were going to leave it out there all the time. I'd use a Nesco stackable plastic one.
I have a Cosori and an old Excalibur! Wouldn't trade them for the world. Kicking to the curb sounds quite harsh.
If I told the whole story, you would understand. But yes, it may have been a little harsh, but the truth. I have stuck by this company for almost 4 years. It is not like it hasn't been a great machine until it wasn't and the company did not do right to fix issues that are more than just the machine. It is also why I said if you are happy with whatever machine you have...great!
@@ThePurposefulPantry What happened? Can we know?
Could you tell me what sealer would be good for wide mouth or small mouth jars
This is the one I use - it works for both> amzn.to/3VyOjnj (this is an affiliate link)
How much heat is produced around this unit? Does it raise the room temperature noticeably when it runs for long periods of time?
We have ours in a closet and if I've been running it for long periods of time without opening it, you do notice it one the doors open. It produces heat to dry, so yes, it puts off heat. But I have never noticed that our room was any hotter when I used to run it in the kitchen. If you were near the machine you might notice, but I didn't notice the whole room changing.
@3:55 A 👍🏻 for considering that the rest of the world uses Celcius 😊
Hi Darcy, after watching a lot of your video, I decided to buy a dehydrator! I was wondering for a 4 members family, should I buy a 6 tray or a 10 tray, in your opinion?
The family member number wouldn't be something I'd be concerned about. It's more - do you have a large garden that you're trying to preserve or do you plan on purchasing? Are you trying to just do snacks, or are you trying to build out a dry pantry? That is more of what I'd think about for sizing. A six tray (or 5 tray with the Cosori) has worked well for us unless I had some big purchase I did or we were in the middle of harvest season, even in our small garden, and I was thankful to have a backup dehydrator or two.
Which is quieter - cosori or this Excalibur?
Is this the select or the performance model ?
Darcy, I have been watching from the sidelines for about a year and a half. I have never dehydrated or freeze dried anything. I live in florida. It's hot, humid, and everything gets damp and musty. But I have been watching you and been so tempted. But this machine looks like something I would try. Any advice, besides moving to a better state?😊
Just do it!
I’m in Georgia and have the same issue. If you dehydrate when it’s humid it can take a really long time or increased temperature but things will dry eventually. Definitely use food safe moisture absorbers (silica) when you are storing your dehydrated food.
I'm curious if you have an opinion about this dehydrator? I found it on Amazon. Its a Tiastar 10 tray stainless steel 72 hour timer. Its 1100 watts and comes with enough mesh screens for every shelf and 4 fruit leather trays.
I've never heard of it, so can't really give an opinion.
Total newbie to dehydrating. Can a silicone sheet be used instead of a plastic sheet?
Yes
What’s the difference in the performance unit versus the select (besides $100😊)?
None that I know of, but like I said, I didn't even try them. I couldn't do all the machines at once, and like this one enough that I returned the rest.
Is the timer optional or do you have to set a time for it to turn on
the timer is automatic at 8 hours - you have to adjust it to what you want. But it goes up to 80 hrs.
Hi will you be posting a new sale code soon for Mothers day? I just missed the Spring24 sale!! Thanks
It's not my code, unfortunately, so it's up to what Excalibur is doing. As soon as they put a new one out, I will.
Just wondering how much it weighs? I bought a large capacity one (another brand), I love it but it's pretty heavy. Thanks for the review !
I'm not sure - but the Amazon page probably has a weight on it.
@@ThePurposefulPantry So I looked it up Amazon, the 6 tray Excalibur weighs 18+ lbs., mine weighs 33+lbs (it's a Septree10 tray stainless steel model)!! Something to consider if you are buying a new one, if you'll need to move on around, to your kitchen or outside!
I have a line on an Excalibur EXC10, do you have any experience with that model? It's their semi-commercial model.
I don't think commercial really means much, but Excalibur makes great machines! If it's in your budget, go for it!
It looks like there's a slight opening on the sides of the door that would let heat escape . ??
I explained the gap - it's there for a reason - the same reason that you have vent holes in a Cosori.
How does this excalibur compare with the Sahara that you have also used?
All dehydrators are basically the same. The Sahara has an air-only feature which is pretty unique to them, and while it looks like it might be flimsy - it's not. It's wider than this machine, which means I can't keep it up permanently, and it is a bit of a hassle to pull out and put back up when not in use, it's a great machine, too.
Has is this compared to the Magic Mill
I've never used the Magic Mill, so I can't compare.
Do these run up your electricity very much?
It's an electrical appliance, so yes it does use energy. It costs about $1/day to run it for 24 hours, generally. But it's purposeful use of energy to put food up for my family, to stop food waste, etc. It's not like the tv is on just running. The per day cost will differ based on your local utility rates.
@thepurposefulpantry Could you share how tall the interior is? I'm wondering what size jars could fit to make yogurt in this one or if a 10-tray would be better for taller jars. I tried reaching out to Excalibur and they couldn't tell me the interior dimensions. 😕
You can fit quart jars on the bottom rack, but not half gallon jars
@@ThePurposefulPantry Thank you!
@@ThePurposefulPantry Do you have an exact measurement on the height? I have a shorter half gallon jar but it's 8.25". Think that'd fit? 🤔
Quarts just fit. Anything bigger won't, and I can't get in to measure it right now.
@@ThePurposefulPantry Ok thank you so much!
I know you have reviews. But is it time to do a favorite 3 dehydrators and why?
I don't really have favorites. They all have their pros and cons and my personal preferences. I'll use this one until it dies. The 3900 Excalibur (black plastic model) is a great machine - it's just too large for my main workspace, so it's my overflow machine.
Well, poo .. I haven't even unboxed my Cosori yet .. but I think I'll keep it anyway ☺
Trust me: you will LOVE your Cosori. Happy dehydrating! ❤️
Thanks for the comment .. I hope I can do well with dehydrating .. seems like a good addition to canning ☺@@peggymcguire6042
Looks like a good one. How big are the trays, 14"x14"? I'll definitely need some silicone trays with a lip on them, lol, best to get ones that fit. Thanks.
15x15
@@ThePurposefulPantryThanks.
I'm so upset! I just recently realized that dehydrating is not for long term storage!
Sure it is. Not for 25 years, no. But for 2-3+ years, depending on the food, it is.
@@ThePurposefulPantry Well, I'm a dummy. I DID think it would last for many more years. Glad you are there to keep me straight.
😅The
the inside looks like metal. is it metal or plastic? I will not purchase anything that heats up plastic.
My only concern is that Excalibur's support has gone to the curb. I have the discontinued 5-tray. unit, which I have loved and used for more than 10 years. It no longer starts (most likely outlet or power issues at home). After four hours of going thru pointless troubleshooting scripts and long waits with low-information support staff, I still have no resolution, no access to the wizards who freely helped customers a few years ago.
My unit fits in the mid level of a microwave cart and takes up ZERO counter space. I could dry food in it anytime I wanted, no hassle. I am unwilling to redesign my kitchen to accommodate a counter-top unit. I wanted Excalibur to sell me a replacement board or just the components, but the phone people cannot go offscript. The company has fallen from their pedestal IMHO. I would suggest that the quality of tech support be reviewed before considering any purchase that might need occasional help.
Sorry - I can't rearrange my kitchen at all - nor do I have space for a cart - thus mine sits on my dryer. :D I didn't have trouble with their support with the first one of these I purchased, and they replaced it immediately. But I didn't try to fix an old, discontinued model.
